How to make a canopy over the porch with your own hands? Polycarbonate canopies: a variety of shapes and designs Ready-made canopy over the porch with monolithic polycarbonate

Among the attributes of the design of the facades of residential buildings, special attention is paid to the porch, which is located at the entrance to the house and primarily characterizes the taste of its owner. According to the generally accepted opinion, the porch, devoid of a visor, gives the impression of unfinished work on the design of the facade. In addition, not many will like the prospect of opening doors in bad weather in heavy rain, for example.

In addition to the above arguments, the need for a canopy over the front door is also explained by aesthetic reasons. To this it should be added that anyone (with experience in relevant work, as well as the ability to handle the simplest tool) can easily build a canopy over the porch with their own hands.

Varieties of visors

In practice, there are several varieties of protective visors, differing not only in the material used, but also in their shape. In this case, the following options are the most common:

  • single-pitched canopy with a frame fixed on the wall of the facade;
  • a gable canopy, both slopes of which cover the porch on each of its sides;
  • a canopy in the form of a tent, completely covering the area in front of the front door;
  • an arched structure that borders the porch from above and from the sides.

According to the mounting method, all known canopies are divided into structures mounted on special supports and suspended structures fixed directly on the wall using special brackets.

Material selection and sketch preparation

Before starting work, you must first select the material for the future visor, as well as prepare its sketch, taking into account the already selected material and the climate in your region. At the same time, most often in the conditions of central Russia, wood is chosen for the manufacture of these protective devices, which is easily amenable to decorative processing, which allows decorating the pediments of the visor with elegant carvings.

As roofing for it, or other materials with similar properties are most often used. If you plan to make a protective canopy in the form of an arch or a tent, it is most convenient to use tiles to close them or make it from polycarbonate.

Work on the arrangement of the visor begins with preparatory operations, consisting in marking the place of its installation and taking all the necessary measurements. In this case, it should be borne in mind that the visor should completely cover the porch over the entire area and even slightly protrude beyond its borders. Such a margin will allow you to almost completely protect your porch from rain in strong winds.

When the measurements are completed, a sketch of the future product is prepared on a sheet of paper, indicating all its dimensions. Such a sketch will help you determine the amount of materials needed to make a visor and which will need to be purchased. These calculations should take into account the angle of inclination of the slopes and their total length. Before starting work, in addition to the boards and beams necessary for arranging the battens and rafters, special triangular brackets are prepared, and roofing material is also purchased.

The procedure for manufacturing a wooden structure

Work on the construction of a wooden canopy begins with the manufacture of several rafter squares, formed by two beams fastened together at an angle of 45 ° or 60 ° (depending on the width of the overlapped area).

After that, a gable roof structure is assembled from the squares, fastened with the help of two longitudinal beams, a ridge and a system of spacers. The resulting structure must be securely fixed in the marked place of the wall on pre-mounted metal brackets that repeat the shape of the squares.

As additional supports, two vertical beams with braces are used, which are rigidly fixed on the facade wall on the sides of the porch. Note that before the final fixing of the structure, it is necessary to check the horizontal position of its position, as well as the verticality of the installation of additional support beams. It is clear that all of the above applies to the installation of a suspended type visor.

If you have opted for the canopy with separate supports, there is no need to use special metal brackets.

In this case, special poles made of wood or metal and installed in pre-prepared pits act as supporting elements. Before their installation, a mixture of crushed stone and sand is poured to the bottom of the pits, after which the base of the pillar supports is concreted to the entire depth of the pit. Bearing beams are attached to the upper part of the supporting pillars with a rafter system mounted on them (i.e., the entire previously prepared structure). For a wooden porch, two pairs of rafter legs are quite enough, which are additionally connected with crossbars to increase the rigidity of the structure.

The installation of the supporting frame is completed with the installation and subsequent fixing of the ridge beam.

After that, a crate is laid along the already mounted rafters (thin bars, sheets of thick waterproof plywood or boards can be used for its manufacture).

Roofing material is laid on top of the crate, the installation of which is carried out in the manner prescribed for the type of coating you have chosen.

When finishing the canopy, you should take care of special hooks for attaching gutters, as well as wind slats. At the final stage of work, the elements of the drain and the protective eaves are mounted.

In the second part of this article, the features of making a protective visor from such a common material as polycarbonate will be considered. Its appearance has made a small revolution in the design of most types of lightweight and light-transparent structures. And, indeed, a relatively inexpensive, fairly strong and lightweight honeycomb material immediately began to be in high demand among the consumer and is widely used not only in the manufacture of sheds, but also in the arrangement of greenhouses, skylights, decorative barriers, etc.

Any person familiar with the openwork forms of a polycarbonate canopy over the front door will surely appreciate its aesthetics and will not refuse to have a similar design in their home. That is why we decided to help home craftsmen and acquaint them with the specifics of choosing the frame material, as well as with the basics of designing and practical manufacturing of such structures.

The choice of materials for the frame

When choosing a material that is best combined with polycarbonate and provides the visor with the maximum possible strength, in addition to the special requirements of SNiP, its attractiveness should also be taken into account. appearance.

That is why, first of all, we will try to explore different kinds material for the frame in terms of their compatibility with polycarbonate, and we will also try to evaluate the disadvantages and advantages of each of them.

Wood

A wooden frame is distinguished by ease of assembly and relatively low cost, but is significantly inferior to the same metal base in terms of reliability and service life. To eliminate this drawback, it is recommended to use only hardwoods for such a frame.

Before making such a frame, the wood should be treated several times with Oksol-type drying oil or a similar impregnation that reliably protects it from decay. From an aesthetic point of view, a polycarbonate canopy with such a frame fits perfectly into the facade wooden house, the frame of which is made of timber.

Polycarbonate sheets are fastened to the frame made of the indicated types of wood using standard self-tapping screws using special thermal washers that ensure the tightness of the fastening zone and are painted to match the color of the sheet itself.

Aluminum

The frame based on an aluminum profile is also quite light and is easy to install, since corners or tubes are used for its manufacture, which can be easily cut and formed. One of the advantages of a visor on an aluminum frame is that it does not have to be primed and protectively painted. A relative disadvantage of this material is its significant cost.

But if you are not too worried about the cost of the material, but primarily attracted by the design of the structure itself - this option is the most preferable. A canopy with a frame based on an aluminum profile will look perfect against the backdrop of any modern facade.

steel profile

The structure of the steel profile is characterized by high strength, but at the same time it has a significant weight and must be fastened with great care (preferably using anchor bolts). In addition, the reliability of fastening such a canopy over the front door can be ensured through the use of threaded connections (bolted or screw).

To increase the aesthetic perception of the entire structure as a whole, all connections are best made electric welding and then gently grind them with a grinder.

Upon completion of the grinding work, the frame must be carefully primed and painted over with high-quality paint (preferably in two layers). The fastening of cellular polycarbonate blanks to the steel profile is carried out by means of self-tapping screws using special gaskets and plugs that block moisture access to the frame.

Features of the arrangement of the canopy

We will consider some of the nuances of manufacturing a polycarbonate-coated visor using the simplest design as an example, during the assembly of which the material is laid without deformation (bending) and with a slight slope that provides rainwater runoff. All necessary operations are performed in this case, taking into account the following installation features:

  1. Since polycarbonate is produced and sold in sheets of 6 × 2.1 meters in size, you need to prepare a tool for cutting it in advance (a hacksaw, an electric jigsaw or a regular clerical knife).
  2. The frame of the canopy can be fixed to the wall using special alignment dowels.
  3. For the convenience of installation work it is best to start fixing polycarbonate sheets after fixing the frame on the wall.
  4. The number of sheet attachment points must be at least four.

In conclusion, we note once again that to fix the polycarbonate blanks on the frame, roofing screws of the required length with an elastic gasket and a special washer should be used.

The traditional use of roofing materials in the construction of canopies, canopies is replaced by the use of innovative polycarbonate material. Possession of unique properties made it possible to significantly expand the forms and significantly reduce technical requirements to structures.

Polycarbonate is a polymer plastic widely used in many construction sites. It has established itself as a high-strength material with a low specific gravity. Became an alternative replacement today PVC panels. Sheets are produced by processing, extrusion of polycarbonate granules.

Peculiarities

The purpose of visors and canopies is to protect a limited space from the elements of the external environment: rain, snow, wind and intense sunlight. The structure is erected with the help of supports, the forms embody all the fantasies of the equipping owner from simple to exclusive design solutions.

The basis of the popularity of polycarbonate consists of the features of the qualities and characteristics of this material:

  • plasticity and ability to transmit light expands applications;
  • light weight allows the use of lightweight bearing supports;
  • the ability to tolerate large temperature changes;
  • thermal insulation properties, heat is retained throughout the structure;

  • variety of finished colors polycarbonate sheets, so you can choose what suits you best in a particular case;
  • ease and pleasantness of work during installation, you can cut the sheet with a regular clerical knife, does not require special tools and tools;
  • despite the light transmission, polycarbonate filters and protects against ultraviolet radiation;
  • fastening to the frame is possible using ordinary self-tapping screws;
  • the main technical characteristic of the material is its strength, achieved due to its viscosity;

Polycarbonate canopies are most often placed above a door or a welded staircase. Such a kind of roof can be on suspensions and have various nodes. It is desirable to be present beautiful finish. You can sew the product yourself.

Kinds

Considering the features and advantages of polycarbonate visor designs, it is permissible to separate them by type.

Simple lean-to

An easy-to-implement option that requires minimum investment. Designed for structures with one slope slope, during manufacture and installation do not require additional effort. Installation work is available even to a non-professional.

The single-pitched design will not require bending the profile during installation work. Therefore, there are no restrictions when choosing the thickness of the starting material.

When building a structure from this kind of coating, it will not be necessary to use scaffolding, only longitudinal and transverse beams are used.

Most often this type is used for extension to standing house or any other building.

Among the shortcomings, a small angle of slope of the resulting roof stands out, as a result of which snow deposits will definitely accumulate on it in winter and cleaning will be required.

Arched canopies and awnings

Affordable, similarly unpretentious in installation, have an arched appearance. The main difference from the first option is the completeness and aesthetics of the finished structure. The manufacture of a curved frame and an increase in the coverage area require additional financial investments.

This type is especially popular today. They can be seen in private yards and in cities when arranging covered parking lots, bus stops and gallery passages between buildings.

The semi-circle shape allows the snow to slide freely under its own weight., but in the rain, water flows down on both sides of the shelter. A pleasant feature is that the probability of damage to such a roof is very small, since the lowered sidewalls protect against strong wind gusts. This type is suitable for small canopies, and for installing a roof over large structures.

When performed independently, bending the profile becomes difficult.

Multi-pitched structures

It is a design that combines several types of slopes: both straight and curved. This combination leads to an increase in the cost of the finished product.

During construction, the main difficulty is the choice of the correct angle of connection of the slopes, however, the operational characteristics of the finished structure increase significantly.

The lowered ends give better protection surfaces:

  • from the elements of nature - wind and precipitation;
  • tilt angles prevent the accumulation of snow deposits;
  • the frame of the structure is made more rigid, which increases the strength of the structure as a whole.

It is used for parking lots, arranging a barbecue area, roofing pavilions and gazebos.

Complex or cascading awnings

They combine all types of structures. They require the development of projects and drawings, large financial investments. Installation work must be carried out by highly qualified specialists. The client receives an exclusive design building in accordance with his individual wishes.

The scope of this type of roofing is installation over summer gardens, flights of stairs, gazebos and other structures.

This method of making a roof is especially important from an aesthetic view of the finished structure, and due to the arrangement of the vaults in a cascade, precipitation is diverted to the side.

Projects and drawings

The durability of the structure can only be guaranteed if correct selection frame dimensions and specifications polycarbonate, its thickness and quality.

Prior to construction, the construction project is drawn up using the following parameters:

  1. purpose of the visor design;
  2. when choosing, take into account the climatic conditions of the area;
  3. building specifications.

  • gates and gates;
  • outlets;
  • open summer grounds and terraces of cafes and restaurants;
  • greenhouses;
  • arch;
  • canopy;
  • visor.

The calculation of component racks, polycarbonate sheets and guides is carried out.

With the independent construction of light buildings in the form of canopies or visors, it is possible to resort to calculation using an online calculator. For the design of more complex structures, you should resort to the help of specialists.

Using the example of a visor in the form, we will visually consider the drawing up of a drawing and a project.

Before you make a polycarbonate canopy with your own hands, you will need to draw up detailed design drawings. But this is possible only after determining the location of its location, since the fulcrum of the frame depends on this.

The location distinguishes three types of finished buildings.

  1. Separate, independent. Depending on the size, the arrangement of the foundation is required. All support points are made in the form of pillars along its perimeter.
  2. Annex. The frame for such a design is made beam-supporting. One of the sides of the ramp has support points on free-standing racks. The second side rests on a beam fixed on the wall of the building. When used to connect an extension with an organic structure, metal mortgages on a load-bearing wall, the method of fastening is called cantilever-support.
  3. Traditional visors. As a rule, they are attached by the cantilever method to the mortgages in the wall of the room.

Do-it-yourself frame

The initial task and the first stage is the creation of a project, the calculation of raw materials and the creation of a drawing:

  1. we plan the size of the building, taking into account its location;
  2. when choosing a roofing option, the loads from precipitation and wind are taken into account;
  3. design solutions for the design of the frame and the color of the sheets are chosen from the general concept of the surrounding structures.

Having collected all the information, you can begin to calculate the source materials and frame drawings. When drawing up the drawing, the exact dimensions and shape of the roof, technical parameters and material of the supports and the frame itself, the number of fasteners and their characteristics are used.

Particular attention should be paid to the standard size of all types of polycarbonate sheets. Therefore, the joints between them must necessarily fall on the crate.

The width of the profile runs is taken into account based on the parameters of the roofing material itself.

The height of the future structure directly depends on the wishes of the user, however, it is recommended that the lowest point of the roof be located at a level of approximately 180 cm from the floor.

To create a frame, the support posts are calculated subject to the following standards:

  • the minimum allowable cross section is forty by forty millimeters;
  • if the supports will be made of metal, the thickness is chosen from one millimeter;
  • the thickness of the foundation pillars is laid with a value greater than ten millimeters from the taken section of the support posts;
  • the depth of the foundation is at least half a meter;
  • for rafters, a profile with a cross section of at least twenty millimeters is used; for lathing, the thickness is used from fifteen millimeters.

For the correct manufacture of the frame with your own hands, the drawings must be drawn up very accurately and in detail.

If the plans include the construction of a do-it-yourself structure with an area of 8 square meters, project creation, drawings and calculation of materials are best entrusted to specialists. The roof area over such a building is quite large, and only a specialist can calculate the load level. Errors in the calculations lead to the deformation of the frame or the complete collapse of the entire building.

The choice of material for the frame in the construction markets is quite wide and varied.

The following materials are commonly used for polycarbonate structures.

  1. Metal profile. Possesses durability at operation. It is unpretentious and requires minimal maintenance in the form of treatment with anti-corrosion agents. Among the shortcomings, one can single out the large weight of the frame and its high price.
  2. Rolled metal pipes, for example, aluminum profile. The advantages are the same as those of the metal profile. Of the minuses - round section not so convenient for welding or other fastening methods.
  3. Wooden beam, rounded or profiled. An environmentally friendly, living material, if the frame of the building is stylized for a certain design. When doing do-it-yourself work, a carpentry skill is needed, a tree requires some care, and its performance is not so durable.

Installation and finishing works

Polycarbonate sheets are presented on the construction markets in two classic versions.

Cellular

They are impact-resistant panels with a matte or transparent surface. Inside the shell are Balloons with stiffening ribs oriented along the entire length of the panel. This type has increased heat saving, increased strength and low weight. A feature is the ability to change shape, bend sheets in their cold state. Their use in structures with complex geometry is relevant.

The thickness offered by manufacturers has an assortment of product options from four to twelve millimeters inclusive.

Monolithic

They have an optically absolutely transparent appearance. There are no voids inside. Sheets are less flexible, which does not affect the impact resistance of the material.

At the moment, new innovations of monolithic polycarbonate with an anti-abrasive coating and a wavy version are already on sale. The latter option looks like a metal tile, and is already quite often used for roof repairs.

The standard sheet size is 210 centimeters wide and six to twelve meters long.

For a simple polycarbonate visor, a sheet thickness of four, eight millimeters is suitable. In regions where precipitation in the form of snow is increased, or rather strong gusts of wind are observed, the thickness is chosen from ten millimeters.

On request, construction markets offer a service for cutting blanks. Usually, to minimize waste, the length is made a multiple of the width of the sheet.

For installation work, you will need the following set of materials and tools:

  1. polycarbonate sheets - the color is chosen in accordance with the color scheme of the building;
  2. visor frame;
  3. welding machine;
  4. a set of screws;
  5. electric drill and screwdriver;
  6. roulette and level;
  7. indelible pencil.

Before starting the process of mounting a canopy or canopy over the entrance group, it is necessary to make an accurate marking of the places where the frame is attached to the building.

A canopy over the porch of a private house or at the entrance of a high-rise building is simply necessary. It not only saves a person from the rain, while he is looking for the keys to the door, but also protects the concrete area at the entrance from excessive moisture. Such a canopy is one of the simplest in its embodiment, and therefore can be erected independently, without the involvement of a specialist. And we will help you to do it by talking about some of the features and nuances of installation.

Features of polycarbonate: pros and cons

Polycarbonate sheets are modern material, used not only for roofing roofs, but also for fences, greenhouses and other objects. Polymeric plastic is widely used both in industry and in construction. It has properties that give it the ability to compete with iron and glass. The advantages of using polycarbonate in the construction of canopies over the porch are as follows:

  • resistance to fire, polycarbonate does not burn, but at very high temperatures it can melt;
  • plasticity and flexibility, which allows you to create unusual shapes of canopies from polycarbonate sheets;
  • impact resistance - the ability of plastic to withstand impacts, the force of such impacts is 20 times higher than that of glass;
  • a variety of colors, and not the surface of the polycarbonate sheet is painted, but the material as a whole during its manufacture, so the color is not lost over time;
  • has a high degree of transparency, passing sunlight, but delaying ultraviolet rays;
  • compared to iron and glass, polycarbonate sheets are much lighter;
  • polycarbonate is not affected by chemicals, as well as wind, moisture, hail;
  • polymer plastic is not afraid of temperature changes from -60 0 to +110 0 C.

Polycarbonate is produced in two types: monolithic and cellular. The first one has fire safety and impact resistance, and therefore it is more often used in the automotive industry, the military industry, construction, etc. Honeycomb is a multilayer structure, the layers of which are connected by stiffeners, forming a cellular structure. The air in the cells provides thermal insulation. Such polycarbonate is more often used for peaks and canopies. Its standard dimensions are 2.1x6 m and 2.1x12 m with a thickness of 4-16 mm.

Note! Canopies can also be made from monolithic polycarbonate, only it will be somewhat more expensive. The dimensions of the sheets are 2.05x3.05 m with a thickness of 2-12 mm.

Variety of polycarbonate visors

Canopies over the porch made of polycarbonate can have a different shape, regardless of the size of the entire structure. Both large and small canopies can be:

single-sided and double-sided;

arched;

domed;

wavy;

cascading and unusual.

In order to make polycarbonate canopy supports, use various materials: wood, aluminum, steel profile or pipes. The frame material of the canopy should be combined with the appearance of the building over the entrance of which it is installed. After all, an expensive and elegant canopy in front of the entrance of an old house and a cheap one will look equally ridiculous. simple design in front of a rich and luxurious house.

Wooden poles and frame are by far the cheapest and easiest to assemble. But the life of the tree is less. For a canopy, it is better to take a bar of hardwood, for example, oak or larch, and do not forget to treat it with special impregnations from decay. Canopies with wooden supports will fit a house made of timber or logs. Polycarbonate is attached to the tree with self-tapping screws and sealed washers.

Aluminum corners and pipes are perfectly combined with polycarbonate, do not require painting, but are also expensive. Such material is easily bent and cut, so making a canopy is easy. A canopy with aluminum supports will decorate the entrance to a glazed veranda or greenhouse.

The design of a canopy made of steel corners is the heaviest, and therefore it is quite difficult to make such a canopy yourself. For assembly, use anchor bolts or welding. And polycarbonate sheets are attached to self-tapping screws. The frame must be painted with paint.

Have less weight steel pipes, and therefore they are often used in the construction of canopies over the porch. Despite the same cross-sectional area, the pipe is stronger than the corner. The pipe frame should be simple, since it is very difficult to bend such material without special equipment. The elements are connected by welding.

Polycarbonate canopies on Kraft metal supports look unusual. Outwardly, it resembles hand-forged openwork elements. For the manufacture of the frame, metal square tubes are used, which are bent into parts and are sold in ready-made. They are connected by welding.

Calculation of materials, creation of a drawing

Canopies over the porch of polycarbonate "by eye" are not made. First you need to choose the design and shape of the canopy, make a drawing, pick up necessary materials and tools, and only then begin the construction of a canopy. To begin with, we will solve the issue with the drawing of the future product.

Note! It is best to entrust the manufacture of the construction drawing to specialists, but if this is not possible, you will have to carefully calculate everything yourself.

Having chosen the shape of the roof and calculated the dimensions of the structure, we proceed to the manufacture of the drawing. You make the drawing for yourself, so it is not necessary to comply with all technical regulations and document requirements. However, try not to make a mistake with the measurements, the location of the elements and how they are attached. I really don’t want your canopy to collapse then on someone’s head, due to the fact that you incorrectly calculated the snow and wind loads.

However, back to our project. We managed to make calculations and we found out that for the supports of the canopy we planned above the porch, we need to take a square steel profile 2 mm thick and 50x50 in size. It will take 2 pillars with a height of 2730 mm. In addition, you need:

  • 3 arched trusses with a length of 3300 mm from an arc-shaped square profile 2 mm thick with dimensions of 25x25 mm;
  • 2 longitudinal beams 2100 mm long from a square steel profile 40x40x2 mm;
  • 6 beams per run - length 2100 mm profile 25x25x2 mm;
  • two thrust bearings for supports;
  • for a canopy, we will take a sheet of cellular polycarbonate 2.1x6 m, 12 mm thick, from which a part 3500 mm long will be cut off;
  • you will also need fasteners for cellular polycarbonate, bolts for attaching supports, a corner and a set of electrodes for electric welding.

Now let's talk about how we will carry out work related to the construction of a canopy. You will need the following tools:

  • building level;
  • hand saw;
  • roulette;
  • electric welding;
  • screwdriver;
  • perforator;
  • set of wrenches;
  • marker.

Canopy installation: installation nuances

Before proceeding to the installation of the structural elements of the canopy, they must first be prepared. We cut the profile for the supports according to the dimensions indicated in the drawing, and then weld the thrust bearings to the supports. We cut the longitudinal and running beams to size, prepare the tool and you can get to work.

  1. We mark the place of installation of the supports on the porch, drill holes in the concrete with a puncher, drive the plugs and fasten the thrust bearings together with the supports to the porch with long bolts.
  2. We drill holes in the wall at the height of the upper edge of the supports and fasten the corner.
  3. We lay the longitudinal beam at one end on upper part support, and the other on the corner and weld it.
  4. Across the longitudinal beams we lay arcuate trusses with an equal step. One at the edge of the visor, one closer to the middle and one closer to the end, and then weld them.
  5. We lay running beams across the trusses with equal pitch and weld them. The frame is ready.

Important! Carry out welding work in compliance with all safety measures, do not forget about it!

  1. We proceed to the installation of the roof. We cut a sheet of cellular polycarbonate according to the dimensions indicated in the drawing, lay it on the roof frame, and then fasten the sheet with special bolts.

With regard to fastening a roof made of polycarbonate, experts give a number of recommendations that would be nice to remember, because for many ordinary people working with such material is new.

  • When cutting sheets of cellular polycarbonate in winter in frost, be extremely careful, but it is better to transfer such work, if possible, to a warm room, otherwise the material may crack and deteriorate.
  • If you want the cellular polycarbonate roof to last for a long time, use a special profile for the ends (plugs) and perforated tape.
  • If there is a need to join two sheets of polycarbonate, do not invent anything, use a special split profile.

  • When screwing the sheets to the roof frame, do not overtighten the fasteners. Otherwise, the sheet will burst in this place, and rainwater will seep through the crack.
  • Cellular polycarbonate of a particular type is a fairly elastic material, however, it is better to find out its characteristics before you start to "godlessly" bend the sheets.

In conclusion, we note that a porch without a canopy creates many dangers for people leaving the building. Therefore, it is best to take up the construction good canopy over the polycarbonate porch immediately before something happens. We choose a canopy option from hundreds of proposed ones, make a drawing, select everything you need and get to work!

Why do people choose polycarbonate

Let's look at what this material is. Polycarbonate is a hard polymer plastic. It is widely used not only in construction, but also for the production of lenses, CDs, computer parts.

May be:

Cellular polycarbonate is several thin plates interconnected by jumpers. In cross section, the sheet is divided into cells, and the air in them provides good thermal insulation properties of the material.

Monolithic polycarbonate is a solid sheet of polymer without voids and cells. It's universal construction material, which has excellent light transmission, and can replace ordinary glass.

Among the advantages of the material it is worth highlighting:

  • Affordable price. Polycarbonate is cheaper than metal, glass and wood.

  • Light weight for easy installation. Cellular polycarbonate is 16 times lighter than glass.

  • Fire safety. Non-flammable and does not contribute to the spread of fire.

  • Resistance to temperature changes. Polycarbonate perfectly tolerates operation in the temperature range from -40 to +120 degrees Celsius.

  • Reliability and durability. Properly made canopy from this material will serve you for decades.

  • Flexibility and plasticity. You can create designs of various design forms.

  • Variety of colors. Polycarbonate is produced in all possible colors, which makes it possible to choose a material that fits perfectly into the style of the building.

  • Ease of care. To clean the coating of the canopy from pollution, you will not need expensive detergents. It cleans up well with normal soapy water.

It is not surprising that with so many useful properties, polycarbonate is so popular as a material for building canopies. Let's figure out what a canopy to the house can be?

Canopy over the entrance

The canopy above the entrance protects the porch from rain, snow and other adverse factors. It can be attached to the building on suspensions or installed on additional supports. The frame material is wood, steel or aluminium.

Sheds made of polycarbonate on a forged frame look very beautiful and interesting. Floral motifs, complex geometric shapes of forged elements give the appearance of a visor of luxury and chic. Such designs fit well into the style of old buildings and classic private houses.

The canopy over the entrance made of polycarbonate not only perfectly fulfills its main function, but also serves as a harmonious addition to the exterior, and in some cases - bright accent, which can completely change the visual perception of the appearance of the house. Due to the variety of colors, the material can be perfectly matched to the color of the building.

carport

The advantages of building a carport to the house are obvious:

When designing such a structure, the dimensions of your car are taken into account, and such a part of the building is selected that is convenient to drive up to.

Cozy terrace

A common option for installing a polycarbonate canopy to the house is to create a terrace for summer holidays. It can be placed directly in front of the main entrance or on the side of the building. Tables and chairs are installed, the high fire safety of the material allows you to place a barbecue on such a terrace.

And this is another example of how a variety of colors allows you to make the perfect design for your taste. It is very pleasant to be under a completely transparent roof during a warm summer rain. They say that the flowing drops of water can be watched endlessly. The tinted coating protects from bright sunlight and ultraviolet rays. An interesting lighting effect is created by bright sheets of colored polycarbonate.

Wood is an environmentally friendly natural material that has a pleasant smell.

“A river begins from a blue stream”, and the entrance group to the house begins with a porch and a canopy above it. This is a kind business card every homeowner. The canopy over the porch, see photo examples of successful solutions in the galleries, carries not only a huge aesthetic load, decorating the facade of the house, but also performs a lot of practical functions, the main of which is to protect the outdoor extension from atmospheric precipitation, making the entrance to the house more comfortable.

In this article we will figure out what options for canopies over the porch are, what materials are used for construction, consider the most successful, beautiful and almost universal design solutions for such extensions. And of course, we will focus on how to correctly calculate the size of the canopy for the porch, what parameters must be taken into account when designing, and how to make a canopy over the porch with your own hands.

Design features of canopies, roofs and canopies

support for visor

Depending on how the extension is supported, the roof can be supported on vertical poles, or hung on special brackets on the wall of the house. The location of the support points depends mainly on the condition of the load-bearing wall of the state, on the dimensions and materials for the canopy. The design of the porch with a canopy also plays an important role for the type of supporting structure, the photos demonstrate this well. Thus, the canopy can be attached to the house and be part of the building, or it can be an independent structure, with its own foundation and supports. In principle, supports for the canopy can be placed on the upper platform of the porch, fastening the structure with anchors, or dig separate holes and cement the pillars, having previously arranged a gravel-sand cushion.

Canopy supports are made from different materials, the simplest and lightest, of course, made of wood, but they need pre-treatment with an antiseptic and a fireproof compound. It is unlikely that anything can compare with the beauty of wood, and the possibilities of modern cutting make it possible to purchase beautiful openwork elements at a very reasonable price, the aesthetic effect of such decor fully compensates for all costs.

Semicircular canopy made of metal and polycarbonate, schematically the main load-bearing elements of the visor

As the basis of the visor, we take an independent wooden extension above the front door, on pillars, with a shed roof, a kind of veranda hut on chicken legs.

It is interesting: Do you know why the huts in fairy tales are on chicken legs? In fact, even in ancient times, people noticed that after fires, in swampy areas, the remains of trees conifers stand as skeletons for centuries, do not rot, do not deteriorate. The people at that time were savvy, and immediately understood what was happening. It turns out that if a pine log is smoked in thick smoke on coals, then the resin under heat treatment forms a strong protective layer, the wood becomes practically invulnerable, it is not afraid of anything: not water, nor microorganisms, nor rot takes it. Therefore, during construction, the columnar foundation was made of such stoned logs, and houses stood on such a foundation for more than a century. It was only later, in fairy tales, that they came up with the idea of drawing emotional, running huts on giant chicken legs.

First you need to transfer the drawings of the visor to the area, carefully measure the dimensions, hammer pegs around the perimeter, and remove the top layer of soil. To attach a canopy with a size of 2 * 1 m, a height of 2.2 m, you will need 2 pillars-logs, 2.5 m long, and 2 by 2.7 m, treated with antifungal antiseptics, water-repellent and flame retardants. Those parts of the supports that will be dug into the ground must be smoked or smeared with mastic.

To install vertical supports, pits 0.7 m deep are dug in the corners, a layer of 200 mm of sand is poured onto the bottom, a layer of crushed stone of 200 mm is poured on it, everything is rammed. Concrete is mixed, a little mortar is poured onto the bottom, a pole is installed, leveled, strictly vertically, it is advisable to make struts to fix the poles in this position, top up concrete mix so that the hole is completely filled. After 7 days, when the concrete sets, the supports are sawn to the desired level, we remind you that the minimum height of the canopy should be 2.2 m.

Schemes of the main types of canopies for the porch

Further, from the bars, the posts are tied along the perimeter, be sure to check the geometry of the perimeter so that the logs do not fall to the sides. The pillars at the facade are attached to bearing wall the main structure with anchors or metal corners, so we tie the two structures together.

Logs are laid on top of the support logs, on which the rafters are attached, with a step of 200-300 mm, they are quite suitable for these purposes. wooden blocks with cross section 50*50 mm.

A conical canopy on pillars reliably protects the porch from precipitation

Important: In order for the structure to be airtight, the gap between the facade of the house and the extension must be carefully sealed. For this, a strip of galvanized metal is suitable, which must be bent along, the part that adjoins the house must be recessed into the facade. The strip is coated with liquid bituminous resin, and screwed with self-tapping screws. Sometimes polyurethane foam is used for sealing, but it eventually breaks down from exposure to UV rays and moisture.

But then it all depends on your needs, you can cover the rafters with a profiled sheet, polycarbonate or slate, on this the manufacture of a canopy over the porch can be considered complete. But prudent owners understand that such a visor is not durable, therefore a layer of waterproofing is placed on the rafter system, it can be a roofing material or a vapor barrier membrane, it is attached to the rafters with the help of a crate - these can be slats 20 * 20 mm, and for soft roof it is better to use boards that are tightly fitted to each other. Roofing material is laid on the crate.

Even a small forged visor can become a decoration of the facade

At the end we make a tide. The gutter is attached parallel to the facade of the building, to the outer edge of the roof, slightly sloping. A chain is fixed at the corner of the drain, along which water will gently drain to the ground. Next, you can proceed to the decoration of the canopy, its design depends on the design and budget for the visor.

Be sure to watch the video in which ready-made samples of canopies in front of the porch from different materials are selected.

What to make a light visor?

A canopy over a polycarbonate porch is the easiest option to protect entrance group from precipitation. It looks easy and airy, you can make it yourself. Peaks and canopies over the entrance, the photo illustrates this well, it is better to make from colored, cellular polycarbonate, 10-12 mm thick. Durable material with stiffening ribs will withstand complex mechanical and climatic loads. Before buying, try to slightly twist the sheet if cracks have begun - the material is not of high quality. Bend only across so that the stiffeners are perpendicular to the bend.

The visor above the porch is often installed on a metal frame. Mensols are sold ready-made, you can also make them yourself from metal, for beauty add serial forged jewelry. For a polycarbonate canopy with a depth of 1-1.2 m, a bracket is sufficient with a fit to the wall by 0.6 m and a concave diagonal. The sheet is mounted on a special mount with a thermal washer, plugs should be installed on the ends.

How to correctly calculate the size of the porch roof?

According to the regulations, the upper platform should be 1.5 times the width front door(1.2 1.5 m), a convenient width of the porch is at least 0.8 m. The roof of the porch should extend beyond the dimensions of the steps by 0.2-0.3 m so that water does not flow onto the entrance group.

A porch with a polycarbonate roof, photo below, can be very modest in size, and vice versa, a whole indoor complex in front of the house. In order to save money, it is necessary to take into account the standard sheet dimensions: 6000
2050 mm, you can buy a half - 3000 mm / 2050 mm and a quarter - 1500/2050 mm, just enough for a small canopy to protect top platform from precipitation. The cut edge is recommended to be treated with a fine abrasive to ensure a better adjoining of the docking and end strips. When installing larger structures, do not forget to purchase a docking bar, with which you can seal the joint aesthetically and hermetically. To fix polycarbonate outside only with a resistant side to ultraviolet, the marking is indicated on the protective foam.

What should be considered before making a canopy over the porch?

Before you make a visor over the porch, you need to decide on the size and materials for manufacturing. Peaks are cable-stayed (suspended on upper holders) - small-sized structures made of lightweight materials, cantilevered - fastened with the help of mortgages in the body of the wall and supporting - on poles, columns, walls, corner holders resting against the wall. Removal of struts is not less than a third of the removal of the canopy.

When you have decided on the parameters of the visor, it is necessary to organize a blind area around the porch in order to storm water the soil was not washed away, and if the house is higher than 2 floors, then the installation of a drainpipe is mandatory. For small canopies, the frame is made in the form of holders or a simple frame, for larger canopies it is recommended to make trusses with additional reinforcement, and with a width of 3.5 meters, a truss truss system is required. On ridge roofs and in places with high wind loads, additional fastenings for the roofing material are required.

What canopies are in fashion now?

The usual canopy over the porch of a private house is increasingly being replaced by awnings. In fact, this is a roof made of durable fabric, moisture resistant, non-fading from UV rays, well protected from precipitation and withstanding hail. Stationary awnings have been known for a long time - canopies over the entrance with a fabric roof.

Of interest are modern retractable systems in which you can adjust the degree of opening and the angle of inclination. Canopies are adjusted depending on the intensity of the sun to control the illumination of the room. Awnings are installed not only above the door, but also above the windows. But this is not only a canopy for the house, if you additionally protect the porch with vertical awnings, you get a closed terrace, which, if necessary, easily turns into an open canopy. And if you buy vertical racks in the kit, which can be installed even in soft ground, then you will get a whole gazebo in front of the house.

How to build a visor quickly with your own hands?

Do-it-yourself canopy over the porch is easiest to build from a bar. Making wood products does not require special equipment, a hacksaw and a hammer are enough. Drawings can be made by hand, after calculating the size of the extension.

The holders are made in the form of a right triangle, with legs 0.6 and 0.9 m, the short side is firmly attached to the wall with anchors. The structure is pulled together by transverse bars, the element near the wall is additionally attracted to the house. The tree is treated with protective compounds, painted. The roofing material will be slate, profiled sheet. You can also purchase ready-made pipe or forged holders on the market, attach them to the wall above the porch, laying a polycarbonate sheet on top.

What roofing material to choose for a wooden canopy to the house?

The entrance group is a small architectural group that performs not only the practical function of protecting the porch, but also carries an aesthetic load, and should harmoniously fit into the overall architectural ensemble. According to the recommendations of experts, the roof on a wooden canopy to the house should be made of the same material that covers the main roof - this is ideal. Practical construction shows that the wooden canopy over the porch can be covered with any material that would delicately fit into the exterior. If unsure, take samples of the material and choose the roof on site.

For example, due to the transparency of polycarbonate, the roof made of it is airy and almost invisible, so this material is universal. A small visor can be covered with slate or corrugated board to match the color of the main roof. On a large wooden canopy to the house with supports and a gable roof, soft tiles are suitable, it also happens different color, so you can choose a close color.

How to seal the joint between the polycarbonate visor and the wall?

The visor above the porch made of polycarbonate does not provide a snug fit of the sheet to the wall, in order to avoid smudges on the facade, it is necessary to seal the joint. On sale you can find a special wall profile, as in the photo. Polycarbonate visors, according to reviews, still leak, the profile does not provide reliable sealing.

To cope with the problem, the joint must first be degreased, primed, then filled with a colorless silicone sealant and only then the bar should be fixed. The sealant can be mixed with mineral insulation and the joint is tightly caulked with this mixture. A large gap is sealed with facade rubber. Additionally, a galvanized steel outflow should be built.

What metal is better to make a canopy?

A canopy over a metal porch is practical and beautiful option protect the entrance to the house. The metal frame is able to withstand any roof. The most beautiful is forged, the most practical is made of stainless steel, it is not subject to corrosion. With your own hands, a frame for small and medium-sized canopies up to 2 m wide should be cooked from a reinforced profile with a section of 20 * 20 mm, a wall of 2 mm. For large structures, a corner or pipe 40 * 40 mm, wall thickness of at least 2 mm.

To reduce weight, you can apply a 20 * 40 profile, but additional drawings and diagrams with the calculation of stiffeners will be required. The thickness of the profile is determined by the weight of the roofing material and snow loads. For light materials, such as polycarbonate, you can make more elegant metal canopies, photo. For the Polonso truss, steel, galvanized pipes and aluminum can be used. The calculation of the pipe section and wall thickness in each case is carried out individually, since these criteria depend on the dimensions of the building.

What truss system to choose for a canopy?

The device of the truss system for the canopy depends on the design of the roof of the main house and the architectural features of the knowledge facade. Most often they arrange one or gable roof so as not to overload the exterior with designer excesses. In a country house or in a private house, it is advisable to build a shed canopy with your own hands, before making a frame, it is enough to calculate the angle of inclination of the roof. To calculate the structure, the cross section of the supporting elements, the wind load, one should be guided by section 2.01.07-85 of the SNiP, since with an increase in the steepness of the slope of the slopes and an increase in the size of the building, the loads also increase. Average tilt angle shed roof above the porch 20-25 o.

Depending on the slope, different roofing materials. For rolled tiles, 5 ° is also acceptable, the metal tile is placed on a slope with a slope of less than 30 °, in regions with high rainfall 45 °. The profiled sheet can be laid on the roof with a slope of 9-20 o.

For which canopies is a metal tile suitable?

The canopy above the porch made of metal is suitable for all types of roofing of the main house. The metal tile comes in different colors, so choosing the right shade is not difficult. This is a very budget material, light and practical. Due to the low weight, the metal tile practically does not create loads, so the construction of a bulky frame is not required. But the material is very noisy, so extraneous sounds will disturb during hail and rain.

Do-it-yourself metal tile canopy is built in several stages. truss system covered with crate, slats or moisture resistant plywood. The first sheet is placed with an offset of up to 40 mm, the second with a side overlap, without distortions and gaps. The next row is placed with a call to the previous one by at least 100 mm. For fixing, self-tapping screws with an EPDM gasket are used. At the junction of the slopes, seals are installed, on which the ridge bar is fixed.
