Making wooden shelves with your own hands. Creative shelves on the wall of books. Choosing a room for homemade shelves

A shelf is the simplest piece of furniture that you can make with your own hands, their manufacture will not require any special skills, with the possible exception of two - moderation and accuracy, as Molchalin from the play “Woe from Wit” would say. At the place of installation, the shelves are wall-mounted, floor-mounted and suspended. If the floor shelf has a large height - from a meter and above, it is often called a rack. A few words about hanging: usually this decorative designs that hang on a pipe or a specially driven bracket. This option is popular in those rooms where heating pipes run under the ceiling: they just ask to be hung on something. Shelves are hung on the pipe in the kitchen and in the bathroom: it is convenient there.

Types of shelves

They are made of wood, plywood, laminated chipboard, fiberboard, there are glass shelves. The same materials are used as racks, but they are also made of metal, plastics and other absolutely incredible things - for example, pipes or bottles.

In living rooms, it is not so important what material the shelf is made of. It is important that its design is in the same style as the interior. Even the functionality is not always important: some play an exclusively decorative role. On them, if there is something, then one or two items. Their role is to give the interior of the home a special style and color.

If we talk about the shelves in Technical buildings- the kitchen and the bathroom, in particular, then practicality requirements are added to the considerations of aesthetics almost everywhere. Even decorative shelves in the kitchen should be washed well. For shelves in the bathroom, in general, the requirements are high: from time to time there are very high humidity and materials are required that carry it without any harm. There aren't many of them. It is plastic and stainless steel. They also make bathroom shelves from MDF, but they are normally used with good ventilation in the bathroom.

What are the shelves made from?

Perhaps, to implement the task of creating shelves on your own Almost any material will do, of course, within reason. It is hardly appropriate to attach bulky brick structures, as this will additionally conceal free space. However, any of the relatively other materials is fine:

  1. Wood- the classic option, since the vast majority of users choose it. It is very easy to work with such material due to its low weight (with small dimensions of the product) and it will last a long time if you use a wooden shelf in optimal conditions, that is, at a normal value of humidity in the room.
  2. Glass- such shelves look very modern and will never go out of fashion. True, to create products from this material, you need to have a special tool for cutting glass.
  3. Plastic- Affordable material. It is easy to handle and is not subject to mold formation, as is the case with wood. Especially if the shelves are built to be placed on a loggia or balcony.
  4. Metal- to work with such material you need welding machine if a fully metal shelf is planned. For combined products, it is enough to use a standard set of fasteners, and it is better if these areas are not visible to the eye.
  5. Chipboard or Alternative option - chipboard. The second of these materials is more wear-resistant due to increased stability to room humidity, temperature fluctuations and mechanical deformations, such as abrasion.
  6. Drywall- most often used when the shelf is part of the design of the room, that is, through this material, a niche is formed in the wall.

The choice of option should be determined not only by the financial capabilities of the owner of the premises, but also by his skills in the construction field. Otherwise, the material will be irretrievably damaged, and the product at the output will turn out to be sloppy and generally unsuitable for use, especially in a conspicuous place.

Shelves on the wall

In any room on the wall there are places where you just need to hang something. After all, the majority modern furniture occupies only the lower part - sofas, tables, couches. Top part remains empty and dissonance arises: an overloaded lower part of the room and a half-empty or completely empty upper one. These voids on the walls are organically filled with shelves.

Corner shelf - an excellent solution Structurally, most of the shelves consist of the actual shelves and jumpers. But these components are combined in such a number of options that it is impossible to count. Simple design this is good: you can make any shelves with your own hands. Moreover, these products can be the first self-made things. It's really simple.

How and what to mount

It is not in vain that we start with fasteners. The design of the shelf on the wall largely depends on the type of fastening. Or maybe vice versa. Looking from what to dance ...

Traditional loops

There is a traditional way - on loops. It is suitable for wood and fiberboard, any other material that is thick enough to attach. Screwed on with screws on the sides. Then, between the centers of the holes of the loops, the distance is measured, deposited on the wall (watch for horizontality). At the marked points, holes are drilled for the dowel, the dowel is inserted and the dowel-nail with a small cap is screwed into it, which enters the loop or bracket (the pin is slightly bent upwards). Then a shelf is hung on them.

Not all materials can be drilled. For example, glass shelves. You definitely can't screw anything into them. Mounts for glass shelves are special: they consist of two parts, between which glass is inserted. Often, elastic spacers are installed between the holders. The bottom fastener usually has a small clamping screw for fixing.

Fasteners for glass shelves

The most popular mount for glass shelves is called "pelican" - for its peculiar shape. It looks good and is available in different colors. The thickness of the glass that it can hold is from 8mm to 34mm. You can insert into it not only glass, but also any other material of this thickness. It just looks cool with glass.

It is easy to make glass shelves on the wall with it: buy a mount, order pieces of glass with processed edges of the right size and shape in the glass workshop (or cut it yourself if you know how). What remains is the actual assembly:

  1. Attach the "pelicans" to the wall. Two dowels. The case is collapsible - the decorative overlay is removed, and there are two holes in the mounting plate. One in the case above, the second - below. Fixed, installed in place a decorative overlay.
  2. Inserted glass.
  3. Turned the screw. All.

There are other forms of similar fasteners. The photo below is a few of them.

Decorative brackets

Another type of fastening is brackets. They are reliable, some are decorative, so much so that they themselves are an ornament.

Concealed installation - shelves without support

And the most amazing device for secret mounting. It makes it possible to hide fasteners. At the end, a seat is cut out for the pin and the body of the holder and the shelf is simply put on it.

As you can see, even simple board or a piece of glass on such mounts - that's not bad. But there is still a sea of all sorts of ideas.

Shelf design options

Do-it-yourself shelf in the form of honeycombs

A nice shelf made in the form of honeycombs can be a cool addition to a non-standard interior. A fashionable design is formed from hexagonal modules creating original geometric compositions. Everyone can arrange the blocks in the best way for themselves.

Despite the non-standard look, hexagonal blocks are quite convenient and functional, and besides, they are the strongest and most stable.

To make such a shelf with your own hands, you will need a standard set of tools and simple blanks from rectangular boards. You can assemble a structure from ready-made honeycombs in different ways:

  • fasten them to the wall separately;
  • first connect the modules together and only then fix.

The second option is undoubtedly more practical, since dust will not accumulate between the individual elements.

Let's see how to make a shelf in the form of honeycombs in practice

To get the right hexagon, boards for future construction pruned at an angle of 30°.

Check again if they are the same size, proceed to assembly hexagons. Better to do it on the floor.

The block elements perfectly match one another and begin stick together boards using wood glue.

Attachment points for reliability amplify using L-shaped holders or screws. The brackets can be hidden by painting them the same color as the shelf.

Do the rest of the cells in the same way.

Finished modules carefully polished, then covered with stain and special varnish or painted. The shelf will look unusual if the honeycombs are painted in different colors.

It remains to fold the finished blocks side by side and drill one or two holes at the joints and twist them together.

DIY round shelf

The round shape of the shelf is an unusual and stylish solution for those who are not particularly concerned about how to place more things on it and save space in this way. It is easy to make such a shelf with your own hands. Success will be predetermined if you choose the right source material for the shelf and correctly calculate the dimensions of the parts.

Most available material, which is both strong enough and bends easily - this fiberboard sheet. Two strips of estimated length (l) are cut out of it. At the same time, a board of the desired length is also prepared as a central shelf. Obviously, all these parts should have the same width. Now about the length of the strips.

From the point of view of geometry, the central shelf is the diameter (d) of the outer contour of the future circle, and the stripes, respectively, are half the length of the contour, so they depend on each other and are interconnected by the formula - l=3.14 x d/2.

Let's say the dimensions of the board are 150 by 700 mm, then the length of the semicircle will be 3.14x700 / 2, that is, 1100 mm. Now let's calculate the length of the fiberboard strips, taking into account their overlap, say, 70 mm: 1100 + 2x70 = 1240 mm.

Now let's figure out how to make a shelf with your own hands using a fiberboard sheet.

Stepping back from the end sides by the amount of overlap, apply to the strips markup. Then proceed to form a circle.

The edges of the strips are pointed at each other according to the markings and fixed with clamps. Carefully, so that the material does not burst, the strips are slowly bent, overlapping the free edges on each other.

Before finally fixing all the parts with screws, you need to make sure that they are correctly fitted:

  • check how well the central shelf rises. We note right away that with correct calculations, as a rule, there are no problems with this;

The do-it-yourself shelf is almost ready. It remains to finish it: cover by paint, varnish or other decorative composition. They hang it through the furniture eyes on screws screwed into the wall.

DIY hanging shelves

When choosing an interior for a small apartment, many are wondering if it is possible to make a compact bookshelf with your own hands so that it does not take up much space. One of options- suspension structure.

To get started you need

The work is carried out in two stages: shelves and fastenings.

Prepare shelves, sawn to size.

Along their edges, holes of the same size must be provided.

hanging shelves with their own hands. Photo instruction

The template is pressed against the board from the edge, say, with the help of clamps, and make two holes, but not to the end - approximately to the middle of the thickness of the shelf.

Shelves handle sandpaper and separate. For example, you can paint in a suitable design color.

The shelves are completely ready, it remains to hang them. Reliability in this case, given the impressive weight of the books, is no less important than aesthetics, so it is best to hang the structure cable.

It is cut into pieces in size and, using clamping clips, a loop is made at one end.

They are suspended and fixed along the entire length with the desired step. kegs.

Hooks with screws are attached strictly perpendicular to the wall, on which cables are hung, and already suspended shelves are attached to them.

Do-it-yourself hanging shelf-shelf

Charming hanging shelf to the kitchen with your own hands will allow rational use of space. It will look great in the colonial living room, in the children's room in nautical style or a Mediterranean bath. Anyone can cope with such work, since you can make a shelf with your own hands in just a few simple steps.

blanks from a tree align both in shape and in size.

Mark places under holes and make them with a drill with a pen drill. In order to avoid problems in the future, the diameter of the drill is chosen larger than the diameter of the rope for which the whatnot will be hung.

Markup is easier to do pattern in the form of a 4x4 square cut out of paper. The template must be applied to the corner of the board and markup is made at the point of intersection of the diagonals of the square.

coloring boards.

There are many ways to make a shelf more interesting. You just need to show a little imagination, for example, paint it only from the ends.

Now the design can gather. The rope is folded in half and, stepping back about 30 cm, a knot is tied on each half. The ends are pulled through the holes on one side of the board and secured with another knot. The plank is thus fixed motionless between the two nodes. The process is repeated with each shelf, arranged with the desired step.

Do the same with the other side. The main thing that nodes on both sides are located at the same distance from each other.

The remaining free ends of the ropes are cut and unraveled to form brushes.

It remains to hang the finished bookcase on the wall.

Such a do-it-yourself shelf has several advantages:

DIY hanging shelves for photos

Is it possible and, most importantly, how to make a shelf on the wall so that it takes up very little space, and you can store a sufficient number of photos, albums, record collections and more there? Well, let's figure out how to make a shelf with your own hands so that it has a minimum depth.

This shelf actually represents several lath tied together with a rope. A bar is attached to them, which prevents photos, books, etc. from slipping off the shelf. In principle, there can be as many rails as you need, so first you need to decide on their location and number. So it will be much easier to calculate the width of the shelves and file blanks.

After the blanks skinned, planks are attached to the rails: they can be nailed or glued. The nail heads are carefully hidden under a layer of special putty, and the bar is sanded again.

Stepping back from the edges by 2 cm, two holes are drilled in the shelf with a diameter slightly larger than that of the rope.

From each end of the first shelf stretch rope, tightening at the ends along the knot.

It will be much easier to do this if you wrap the threaded edge of the rope with tape or, say, electrical tape.

Put on a second shelf.

The process is repeated until all are installed.

The free ends of the ropes are tied to screws with hooks screwed in at the correct height. This is perhaps the most crucial moment, since the bottom shelf should be located strictly horizontally, and all the rest will be aligned along it.

Horizontalness is checked by level, nevertheless, someone's help will be useful., After all, even knowing exactly how to make a shelf, you can do it alone final stage it will be difficult.

Christmas tree book shelf

A creative do-it-yourself bookshelf will help to delay the incomparable New Year's mood for a longer time. Instead of garlands and toys, it is decorated with books and various cute little things. Such Christmas tree shelves are especially to the liking of the kids.

This shelf can be made from ordinary plywood sheet.

First you need to prepare a small layout plan all details on a sheet of paper on a scale corresponding to the size of plywood with an indication of their dimensions.

Then you need to transfer everything to plywood in the original size and after carefully checking the location and dimensions of the parts cut out them with a saw or jigsaw.

The Christmas tree is assembled on carpentry glue and fixed with nails.

When the workpiece dries, it is covered paint and give it time to dry completely.

The tree shelf is ready to use. Under New Year you can decorate it to your liking and even put gifts on the branches-shelves.

Here's how a DIY shelf can help bring joy to loved ones.

Do-it-yourself shelf-rack

The functional and minimalistic industrial style is very popular today. A do-it-yourself shelf assembled on pipes will bring to your home the very industrial chic that you may be striving for.

Since the number of shelves, as well as the total length of the pipes, is easily adjustable, let's focus on general scheme production of this designer furniture.

Work begins with the preparation of shelves from wood. They are applied with a special oil or wax to get a smooth textured surface.

It would be nice if the shelves initially had an interesting texture.

If you cover the shelves more and polyurethane varnish on a water basis, they will acquire even more magnificent radiance.

After allowing the structure to dry, in each corner of the lower shelf, round flanges about 2 cm from the edge.

The location of the connecting parts is marked with a pencil.

The shelves are stacked and clamped with clamps.

A pilot hole is drilled through the center of the flange through the first and second flanges. For the next boards in order, the size of the drill needs to be changed to a larger one, since pipes will pass through them in the future.

Start assembling.

Each flange is placed on the bottom shelf above the pilot hole and fixed to the surface.

Insert into holes galvanized pipes desired length, threaded at both ends and tightened in the flange wrench. A coupling is installed in the upper part.

When all the parts are mounted, flanges are screwed to the tops of the pipes and fixed to the top shelf.

The finished shelf can be made mobile if you install wheels on the bottom board.

The headset will be more stable if you attach it to the wall with special studs or install an L-shaped bracket.

Do-it-yourself kitchen shelf

Men will probably never understand why the housewives do not have enough shelves in the kitchen, but few will deny themselves the pleasure of surprising her with a simple but functional shelf in the kitchen with their own hands.

It is quite easy to make it. Need to make two boards preferably hardwood the same length. One of them will be installed horizontally for various utensils, and the other vertically. It will be fitted with wooden pegs on which you can hang cups, potholders and more. Board widths may vary slightly.

On a plate for cups mark out places for perches. It is better to apply the markings symmetrically, then the extreme ones will be at an equal distance from the edges of the plank.

Following the markup, drill holes corresponding to the diameter of the pole.

Using a jig, this is a special drilling tool, you can make several holes to connect both planks. In extreme cases, you can also use a countersink, then the recesses under the heads of the screws will need to be hidden with plugs.

wooden pole polished sandpaper and sawn into equal parts.

The holes for the perches are lubricated from the inside with carpentry glue and inserted pegs. They should perform the same. Excess adhesive mass is wiped off with a napkin.

If the pegs are very tight, you can use hammer.

Glued to their end circles either plywood or wood. Do the same with excess glue.

The shelf is generally ready, it remains polish fine emery and take care of the appearance: process wood stain and varnish or paint.

Two holes are drilled in the vertical board of the shelves, through which the shelf will be fixed to the wall with screws. The places for the heads of the screws are countersinked, and they themselves are closed with decorative plugs.

When installing shelves use a level.

Do-it-yourself plexiglass shelf

Such a shelf looks very light, without loading the interior with anything. Do-it-yourself transparent shelf is made from a strip plexiglass of a given size, which is installed on the original support of beads.

It is more convenient to cut it out of a sheet when buying immediately in a store.

Screws are selected on the basis that the diameter of its head must exceed the hole of the bead. If this is a problem, a washer can be used.

Beads before installation you need paint gold spray paint.

Paint the wooden beads with gold spray paint.

In the wall drilled pilot holes.

Six beads are put on the screw, screwed into the wall and leveled. The same is repeated with the second. For a concrete wall, dowels are used, in the case of a frame wall, the screws must enter the wooden racks.

A plexiglass plate is placed on the resulting supports.

The shelf thickness of 1.2 cm provides sufficient rigidity, but not so much as to lay out heavy objects on it.

Do-it-yourself hanging shelf on belts

To make such a design is extremely simple.

Need to prepare board a convenient size and sand the surfaces of all edges with sandpaper.

If the texture of the wood is not expressive enough and you would like to hide it, you can paint.

From two identical belts buckles are removed from leather (textile), as well as all other metal parts.

At the ends of each of them drill holes small diameter.

The belts are folded in half so that a the loop. They are fixed on the wall, positioned from each other at a distance slightly less than the length of the plank.

The board is inserted into the hinges and leveled so that it is parallel to the floor.

If you want to fix the board more securely, you can additionally fix the belt with a few screws from the bottom side.

Shelf of construction pallets

Times change, tastes change. Today, many are trying to use industrial decor in their homes, replacing elegant pieces of furniture with deliberately rough ones. Individual elements can be made independently, for example, a do-it-yourself shelf from wooden construction pallets.

For one bookcase, you need to disassemble two pallets. The result is:

The following parts are sawn from this material and polished either with sandpaper or with a special nozzle on a drill:

Boards: Quantity - Dimensions (mm)

  • 4 - 640x145
  • 2 - 680x145
  • 2 - 840x145
  • 2 - 290x145
  • 2 - 640x100
  • 2 - 840x100
  • 2 - 290x50

Checkers: quantity - dimensions (mm)

The shelf is assembled in the following order:

For the base take two narrow boards 640x100 each and fasten along the edges of the checkers. Wide 290x145 are attached to the checkers perpendicular to the narrow boards, aligning them on equal sides.

To the end grounds two boards are fixed vertically with self-tapping screws: narrow (840x100) and wide (840x145). Repeat the same operation with the opposite end of the base.

Finishing up box future whatnot, fixing two wide boards (680x145) on top. To avoid cracking the wood, you can pre-drill holes in them with a thin drill.

Then two wide boards (640x145) are attached to the base. The bottom shelf is ready.

For the rest of the shelves you will need support bars. To do this, the narrowest boards (290x50) are attached at the desired height.

The remaining boards measuring 640x145 are attached to the installed planks. It is advisable to fix them with screws and from the ends. This will give the structure durability and greater reliability.

The resulting bookcase can be used as a rack for your favorite things, and as a shelf for shoes with your own hands.

DIY painting shelf

You won’t believe it, but you can make an unusual original shelf on the wall for your favorite picture yourself, and from a simple set that you can buy at any supermarket.

Creating this masterpiece will greatly simplify Dremel 300– a multifunctional tool with a large number of high-quality attachments and milling machine Dremel 231. The point is this: in order for the picture to slide off the shelf, a groove must be made on its surface.

The boards are placed on the milling table and turned upside down, mark the cut line for groove and with the help of guides on milling table set the desired depth for it.

Perform a groove.

Wooden wall shelf paint in desired color and let it dry.

Attached to her holders and strictly horizontally attached to the wall. The direction is regulated using the building level.

Do-it-yourself children's shelf in the form of a horse

From several wooden boards, you can create a fun bookshelf where your little one will happily store their books.

Required for work sample pony horses. You can draw it yourself or with the help of special computer programs. The template is printed out and a stencil of the main details of the future pony shelf is cut out: legs, head and tail.

Stencils are placed on separate boards, outlined along the contour and cut out parts with the appropriate tool.

Straight cuts are recommended to be done with a saw, and curved cuts with a jigsaw.

surfaces of parts and edges with sandpaper.

The “legs” are attached to the “body” with furniture screws, then the head and tail are glued.

You can go over the product with sandpaper again.

"Horse" coloring.

In a few hours, the miracle shelf will be ready for use.

Shelf-shelf

Here are two bookcase ideas that you can easily make yourself.

First of edged board 40 mm is extremely simple. Bookcase assembled:

  • of two boards, beveled at the top by 30° to provide support;
  • shelves cut from a furniture board.

The height and width of the structure are arbitrary and are selected locally. If desired, the bookcase can be fixed in the upper part, and rubber heels can be stuffed along the bottom of the boards.

Second - S - shaped. For manufacturing, you can use trimming boards, plywood or chipboard. 16 blanks are required for one section of the structure rectangular shape, for example, 300x150 mm.

blanks set in a certain order, at each stage three.

The first workpiece is placed on the floor. A second one is attached to it at a right angle, joining them in width on the left. The third in width is joined with the first along its length, starting from the far right corner.

The fourth, fifth, sixth - are assembled symmetrically, exactly the opposite.

It is very simple to check how correctly the figure has developed: the second, third and fourth boards should form the letter S.

Experienced craftsmen advise first to assemble the design in rough on wooden pins and fit the blanks, and when disassembling, number the parts from the end.

Every detail then sanded sandpaper and begin to collect them, according to the numbering. PVA glue is applied to the joint lines and grooves and tightly clamped, holding in this state for some time.

The assembled bookcase is varnished or painted.

DIY shoe rack

The main problem for the hallway at all times is shoes. How to deal with the perpetrators of the riots, and do it as economically as possible? Optimal solution- make a shoe rack with your own hands.

Let's share some interesting ideas.

From plywood. More often they make a modular whatnot, which is attached to the wall and saves space. Using a jigsaw, plywood is cut into identical rectangular planks, then gently sanded. U-shaped structures are assembled from parts and “invested” one into the other, forming a structure resembling a labyrinth.

From tree. From wooden board cut blanks with a width of 250–350 mm and a thickness of about 20 mm. The next steps are:

Saw the side walls about 800–900 mm long.

Cut out four shelves of 600-700 mm.

Everyone cooks additional details: cross bars and support rails.

All blanks are polished.

The support bars are fixed to the side walls with self-tapping screws.

Shelves are laid on them.

Metal corners are attached to the rear end part.

The finished product can be varnished or painted.

From profile. A galvanized or regular profile plus tempered glass is all you need to build a do-it-yourself shoe rack in a modern high-tech style.

A section of the profile of the desired length is applied to the wall and fixed for the time being with one self-tapping screw.

Check the horizontal level of the profile line.

Screw in the rest of the screws.

Assemble the frame.

Install glass shelves.

From boxes. This is the most economical option for a do-it-yourself shoe rack, both in terms of cost and dimensions.

The contours of the parts are drawn on the cardboard of the box.

They are cut out using a special cardboard knife.

Then boxes are folded from rectangles, which are superimposed on each other. This is how the recesses for the shoes are formed.

Fasteners are made with staples.

The shelf is assembled on the wall, then glued with a decorative film.

Photo of unusual shelves on the wall

80 more shelf options!

Among the pieces of furniture, shelves have long occupied their special place. They serve as both a part of the interior and a device for storing things. Plus, they are pretty easy to make. That's why many people do DIY shelves– from beginners to professional builders and designers. Today we will talk about different ways of making shelves.

Properly selected and manufactured shelves will emphasize the overall style of the interior of the room, will add the necessary touches to it. And of course, they will provide residents with another convenient place to store various items - from trinkets to books, shoes and equipment. Any self-respecting craftsman knows how to make shelves from any material, sometimes even from junk improvised means. Let's look at a few options.

Hallway: do-it-yourself shelves for shoes

As soon as a person enters any living space, the first thing he needs is a place for shoes. Usually it is a set of furniture or shelves. With regards to the first option, this is a topic for a separate discussion. And here's how to do do-it-yourself shelves for shoes we will tell you. Moreover, of all types of shelves, these are the easiest to manufacture. This is explained by the fact that they are usually outdoor - after all, it would never occur to anyone to hang shoes on ... a wall! Although there are such options - in the form of hangers.

Shelves for shoes are usually made of wood. The simplest shelf is two-three-four long boards connected by crossbars (racks, sidewalls). For example, as in photo 1.

DIY shelves for shoes - photo

The shape and size of such a shelf can be different. It all depends on the size and style of the hallway.

Material - natural wood or sawn blanks from plywood sheets, chipboard.

In the first case ready product it is better to lightly anneal with a blowtorch, then varnish (colored or colorless) or stain. You can, of course, not anneal - it's a matter of taste. And it is desirable to varnish: it will give a more beautiful appearance and protect the surface from moisture.

In the case of the manufacture of shelves from chipboard, it is necessary to process the edges and ends of the blanks. For these purposes, a special edging is sold - a plastic (melamine) tape of different sizes and colors. It is heated with an iron and glued to the right place.

Hallway: do-it-yourself shelves for small things

Most often made from the same laminated chipboard do-it-yourself shelves for the hallway on which small things and hats are stored. They look especially beautiful with built-in lamps, of which there are many on sale today. Mount small led flashlight won't be difficult. And if you place a mirror next to or opposite, it will be very cozy and beautiful!

Another option for wooden shelves is shelves made of bars. Their cross section varies from 16x40 to 25x50 mm. The dimensions and configuration of the shelf itself can be very diverse. Shelves made of natural wood and bars are perfect for rooms in a simple rustic country or retro style.

If you need to cut curly edges on blanks from sheet material, then you can not do without a jigsaw. Better, of course, to use electric. But if you need to make a whole pattern from a natural board, then you will need a special jigsaw-burner with a nichrome thread. In this case, the edge will turn out to be already annealed, dark in color, with many vein stripes. You will also need various fasteners - self-tapping screws, bolts, corners. Well, glue, varnish or waterproof paint - depending on the type of shelf and material.

Sometimes shelves are made of metal wire. There are usually no major problems here. As a rule, shelves are made in the form of several lattice tiers. In this case, the wire is either welded, or woven, or simply inserted into the grooves of the side blanks. The whole structure is beautifully designed. There are many other options for shelves from the most different materials- you just need to turn on your imagination.

Do-it-yourself shelves for the kitchen - a good gift for the hostess of the house

One of the places in apartments and houses where you can not do without shelves is the kitchen. To make good do-it-yourself shelves for the kitchen, it should be borne in mind that they should not only be in harmony with the whole design, but also be ergonomic - comfortable for the hostess.

Moreover, kitchen shelves must be reliable. After all, they can store not only dishes, kitchen utensils, cutlery, but also food supplies - cereals, seasonings, ingredients. Who will be pleased if all their weight turns out to be exorbitant for the shelves, and they end up on the floor?

Before proceeding with the manufacture of the shelf, you should carefully consider its design so that it harmoniously fits into the interior of the kitchen. For example, photo 2 shows bottle shelves. They are sure to be appreciated by lovers of a glass of good wine before dinner. Shelves look quite elegant and original.

Shelves for wine

They themselves are made quite simply. Two blanks - planks of hardwood, well processed, are fastened together. To do this, you can use any bars and screws, or do everything on the grooves. Preliminarily, holes for the necks are drilled at regular intervals in the main strips - using a jigsaw or a drill with a special nozzle. The design is varnished and mounted on the wall. To do this, you can buy beautiful brackets or ordinary profile corners. The main thing is that they do not spoil the finished appearance of the shelf. Quantity vertical bars, as well as the distance between them, can be combined.

For an ordinary kitchen, shelves for 3-5 bottles are suitable. Otherwise, the owner of such shelves may pass for an experienced sommelier. By the way, the bottles in such shelves are stored exactly as needed - in a horizontal position. It is better to mount bottle shelves in dark places, because real wine is stored in dark wine cellars.

First, part of the suitcase is carefully sawn off, then a frame is made of planks inside (so that it does not sag under the weight flower pot). Instead of the cut off part, a base is made of waterproof plywood, to which the frame is attached. The whole structure is fixed on the wall - inside the resulting shelf or from below with the help of corners, dowels or self-tapping screws. Of course, the surface of the suitcase must be carefully treated. Then you can decorate your room with a couple more flowers.

Despite the abundance of modern sources of information, people love to read classic paper books and magazines. Do do-it-yourself book shelves won't be a big deal. For example, here is a shelf, as in photo 4.

DIY bookshelves - photo

It is done like this: several plywoods of the same width and different heights are cut out, aligned, fastened together, and then painted or stained. And that's it - a shelf for books of different sizes is ready! It remains only to fix it on the wall. The second option for such shelves is to select the necessary grooves for the size of the books in the part of the wide bar and fix the bar to the wall. On the remaining flat part of the shelf it is convenient to place various little things or souvenirs.

Unusual do-it-yourself shelf in the children's room

There are always a lot of things and toys in the children's room. Therefore, the shelves will be very handy there. In addition to the classic wood for shelves, options from other materials are possible. Somehow: pieces of PVC or other light pipes. Such do-it-yourself shelves for the nursery easily. They are especially popular with craftsmen. Photo 5 shows such a shelf in the manufacturing stage.

For the shelf, a pipe with a diameter of at least 100 mm is taken, cut into equal segments up to 300 mm long, after which they are processed and fastened together (with glue, tightening or other methods) in a checkerboard pattern like a honeycomb. Processing consists in grinding the ends, painting or pasting individual tube-cells with self-adhesive films. Naturally, bright colors will prevail in the children's room. Therefore, you need to give the individual elements of the shelf different colors. Such shelves do not have sharp corners, which is important, and children really like it.

Convenient do-it-yourself shelves for the bathroom - note to craftsmen

Usually, various little things are stored in the bathroom: a soap dish, toothbrushes, razors, scissors, napkins. For this, hanging racks and cabinets are used. As a rule, they are all similar to each other. Having done the same do-it-yourself bathroom shelves rooms, you diversify its interior a little. Approximately as in photo 6.

Of course, you can hang such shelves anywhere. But the fact is that they are not afraid of water! Therefore, in the bathroom they will be the place. And they are made very simply - plastic window sill simply evenly cut into the desired segments, which are attached to the wall. The side ends are closed with native decorative caps.

You can mount the shelf in different positions - upside down or upside down. Depending on this, there will be either a flat front surface, or with a protective side. Fasteners are best made invisible. Otherwise, you can use various chrome brackets and holders, which are many in hardware and plumbing stores.

Finally, here are a few useful tips. For any shelves made of wood materials, the following manufacturing rules are characteristic.

  • You need to choose high-quality dry blanks (bars, boards) without cracks and knots, carefully process them from burrs.
  • When using self-tapping screws, it is better to pre-drill a hole of a smaller diameter than the screw itself - to avoid cracking. Today, instead of ordinary self-tapping screws, special furniture ones are widely used - confirmants.
  • Can be connected wooden details with the help of curly protrusions - grooves, dowels, recesses. In this case, hardwoods should be used - birch, oak and the like.
  • In order for the self-tapping screw to be better screwed into the tree, it must first be rubbed on a hard bar of soap.

For the manufacture of any shelves you will need a variety of tools and materials: hacksaws, a circular saw, grinder, screwdrivers, a set of furniture keys, paints, varnishes, glues. Before making a shelf, you need to think carefully about its appearance, place in the room. Then carefully draw the blanks and proceed with the assembly.

When making shelves, do not be afraid to show your imagination - very often shelves are made from the most unexpected objects and materials! Solutions such as shelves made of old things have long been known: guitars, skateboards, boats, TVs, crates and pallets. Such products are very original and give unusualness to any housing.

Wall shelves - photo for your inspiration

We have selected photos of several wall shelves, the design and photos of which may surprise and inspire you.

Shelves are quite often used not only to complement and decorate the overall interior of the room, but also for a clearer and more appropriate organization of space. Thanks to their use, the owner of the apartment gets the opportunity to conveniently arrange a huge number of small things that are simply lost in the cabinets.

There are many on the market today various models which are made from different materials. They also differ in design.

You can choose not only products with a classic design, but also ultra-modern designs.

But more and more people prefer to make such interior details on their own. Asking how to make a shelf with their own hands, they re-read a lot of literature and look through a lot of catalogs.

However, this does not mean that self-manufacturing of a shelf is difficult and beyond the power of a person who does not have special skills. No, this is absolutely not true.

Familiarization with the literature in this case is necessary in order to create a product with beautiful design that will fit into the overall interior. Let's consider in more detail what shelves are.

Types of shelves

Any specialist will tell you that before you start creating a product, you need to decide for yourself what kind of design you want to get and whether it will be combined with the interior. And only after that you can start creating the product.

Indeed, for a house decorated in a classically seasoned style, it is completely unacceptable to use trendy and modern shelves. They will look extremely awkward.

The most popular and widely known subspecies of shelves is the classic shelf. This is due to the fact that it is quite easy to install, and the appearance, thanks to its simplicity, seems refined and sophisticated.

Used with success and open, closed shelves. Closed products are most often used for decoration and installation in rooms decorated in more modern styles. Glass and sometimes plastic are used for their construction.

Open structures can be used both in modernly designed houses and in apartments with a classic design. Over the past few years, this particular type of shelf has gained immense popularity and therefore is gradually replacing the classic options.

In small rooms, you can often see corner shelves that have a special way of fastening. They are mounted on adjacent walls that are adjacent to each other. Most often they are used in bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms.

In addition to the above types of shelves that are mounted on the wall, there are hanging and floor structures. Hanging shelves mounted in an unusual way.

They are installed using cables and vertical racks, and are attached directly to the ceiling. This mount looks quite unusual and original.

Floor structures are most often used in hallways. After all, do-it-yourself outdoor shoe racks not only look beautiful, but also help you organize the space of a small hallway. It is quite easy to make them though.

How to make a simple shelf

To create the claimed product, you should purchase or prepare some tools and materials in advance. As connecting elements, you can use whatever suits you best. But the most popular are ordinary screws, brackets and dowels.

Note!

For example, take a photo of the shelves with your own hands, which is presented below. It depicts a product with the following parameters: width 250 mm, height 300 mm, length 1100 mm. The manufacturing process for convenience will be divided into stages.

Stages of work

At the first stage, you need to markup. To do this, you should lay the boards on a table or any other flat surface and transfer the measurements from the drawings. The side walls must have a height of exactly 268 mm.

This marking is optimal because the side walls will be located between the two parts.

At the second stage, it is required to cut the boards. To get even and neat cuts, you need to use an electric jigsaw. After cutting, you will get 2 fairly long blanks and 2 shorter ones.

At the third stage, you can start processing the received blanks. The resulting segments should be covered with a special protective varnish or stain, after sanding them.

Note!

In the event that you plan only to paint the shelf, you can get by with a conventional antiseptic primer. So you will increase not only the service life, but also achieve a more even distribution of paint.

At the fourth stage of making a wooden shelf with your own hands, you proceed to its direct assembly. The bottom board should be laid on a flat surface. Step back 8 mm from the ends of the workpiece and draw two lines parallel to the cuts.

They should mark 2 points with a distance of 5 cm from the edge. At the marked points, it is necessary to drill holes for self-tapping screws. With the second workpiece it is necessary to do the same manipulations.

After that, you should install the side blanks on the bottom of the board and secure them. Once you're done attaching the side panels, move on to installing the top panel and securing it.

At the fifth stage, you should fix the brackets on the ends of the side panels, and make several holes for the dowels in the wall. After that, screw in the screws so that they protrude by 5 mm. And now your shelf is ready.

You can make acoustic shelves in the same way, but you need to take into account the dimensions of the equipment itself. Measurements should be taken carefully, because if you make a mistake, the work will have to start over.

Note!

DIY shelves photo

Wall shelves are able to harmoniously complement the design of the room. The range of their purpose is very wide. Depending on the location and application options, they choose the material for their manufacture and think over the design. What features should be taken into account before you start creating a wall shelf with your own hands, and what are the main stages of the process, let's get acquainted in detail.

Variety of wall structures

The main purpose of the wall shelf is to place a lot of small items, while organically combining the functions of storage and interior decoration. Depending on this, the option of installing a furniture structure is determined. There may be several of them:

  • The most common way of placement is to make a wall form, when the product is attached to the wall, at the bottom of which other pieces of furniture (sofa, bed or table) are often located.
  • A kind of highlight among wall structures can be a do-it-yourself hinged shelf. The key difference lies in the method of fastening: instead of traditional brackets and loops, ropes, chains and straps are used.
  • Depending on the organization of the living space, from time to time there is a need to make a corner shelf. Moreover, in addition to the common way of using the internal areas, sometimes they harmoniously use the outer corner of the room.

A little imagination, and you can make a wall shelf design with your own hands in various variations. The following models are widely used:

  • The ease of manufacture with your own hands is distinguished by the console - a shelf fixed perpendicular to the wall.
  • If desired, the design is supplemented with side walls and the back is closed.
  • To create a kind of rack with your own hands, it is enough to combine several single consoles together.
  • Recently, combined specimens with an extraordinary arrangement of horizontal and vertical walls have gained wide popularity.
  • Numerous decorative models of wall shelves are original. Their main function is to create an exclusive design element in accordance with the chosen style.

Occasionally, the facade of a do-it-yourself structure is supplemented with glass. This is practical when storing items that do not have a decorative function. A small part of the designs of wall shelves that you can decorate with your own hands is shown in the drawings below:

The nuances of the choice of material in the design

No construction work is complete without a preliminary plan.

Remark ! Before you start designing a shelf with your own hands, you need to decide on the material for the base.

When choosing it, take into account the place where the furniture structure and its main functions will be installed. The scope of wall shelves is as follows:

  • Book lovers and students will definitely come in handy bookshelves, which are based on a tree and its derivatives.
  • To store jars of spices or decorative items in the kitchen (which are original plates or exclusive mugs), narrow shelves equipped with low sides are used. In this case, it is most appropriate to use wood for manufacturing, although, depending on the chosen design, glass specimens can also look harmonious.
  • The arrangement of the bathroom is not complete without the installation of glass shelves, complemented by chrome elements. This is due to the basic requirement for the material - it must have high level moisture resistance.
  • Universal shelves allow you to show your imagination with the choice of material during self-production. They are intended for setting flowers or various souvenirs, and the base is selected taking into account the overall design of the room. It can be classic wood, durable metal, complemented by forged elements or glass, which creates the effect of lightness.

Mounting options

The type of fastening plays an important role in the design of the shelf wall structure. Having studied the options for fixing, it will be easier for you to determine the most suitable method.

Classic loops

The traditional fastening of wall shelves is the use of hinges. They are optimally suited for products made of wood and its derivatives. An important condition is that the material must have sufficient thickness. The whole process takes place in several stages:

  • The hinges are fixed on the side of the furniture structure with self-tapping screws.
  • After measuring the distance between the holes, the required segment is marked on the wall.

Attention ! Compliance with the horizontal line is important point when fixing the wall shelf.

  • At the indicated point, holes of the required diameter are drilled, designed to insert the dowel.
  • A self-tapping screw with a neat hat is screwed into the clogged dowel, on which a shelf is hung.

Fixing glass shelves

The use of loops is not suitable for all materials. Installation of wall-mounted glass shelves is carried out using special fasteners for fragile products. Fasteners are made of two parts and are often supplemented with elastic gaskets, a glass shelf is inserted between them. The lower part of the device for reliable fixation of the wall structure is equipped with a clamping screw.

A common model for mounting a glass shelf is an instance called a pelican, capable of holding a wall structure with a thickness of 8 to 34 mm. In addition to glass, it can be used to fasten other materials with similar dimensions.

Concealed mounting and decorative brackets

The hidden installation of the wall shelf is distinguished by simplicity and originality. In this case, the fastener is completely masked. The essence of this method is as follows:

  • at the end wooden structure a recess is prepared for the pin and the body of the fastener;
  • the mensol holder is fixed to the wall, after which a shelf is put on it.

Create individual design rooms allow wall shelves with decorative brackets. They can be fulfilled in a production way or treat exclusive copies. Photos of wall shelves decorated with hand-made brackets are presented below:

Manufacturing process

Depending on the chosen design and material, the process self-manufacturing wall shelf has its own characteristics.

Wood

If you want to make an original wooden wall shelf with your own hands, you will need:

  • Base material. In addition to natural wood, you can take MDF, chipboard or GVL, this will greatly facilitate the surface treatment process.
  • An electric jigsaw that can replace a hacksaw.
  • Drill and grinder.
  • Line with a pencil.
  • Building level.
  • Wood glue or liquid nails.
  • Lacquer or stain.
  • Brackets, dowels and screws.

The whole process of DIY wall shelf production is simple. After drawing up a plan or taking a finished project as a basis, the dimensions of the structure are transferred to the material. Sawing wooden base better with a jigsaw, which provides a perfectly even cut.

All elements wooden shelf are carefully polished, in the presence of significant defects I use putty for wood. On the initial stage you will need sandpaper No. 40, sanding paper No. 80 and 120 will allow you to get a perfectly smooth surface.

Connect the parts of the wall structure with liquid nails or wood glue.

Mounting marks are made on the shelf and wall. The brackets are connected to the shelf, and a recess is made in the wall with a drill, after which the dowels are inserted.

At the final stage, self-tapping screws are screwed in and the wall shelf is suspended.

Glass

Rooms with a small area are best equipped with glass wall shelves that create an atmosphere of lightness and visually increase the space. If the experience of working with glass is not enough, it is better to turn to specialists who, at the same time as cutting fragile material, will perform high-quality processing of sections. The following steps for mounting a wall shelf are within the power of anyone who can hold a tool in their hands and are similar to the procedure for attaching a wooden structure:

  • Using the level, mark the attachment points on the wall.
  • The Pelican design needs two dowels.
  • After removal decorative overlay, you will find holes where you need to screw the fasteners.
  • The decorative overlay is put in place and the glass is inserted.
  • At the final stage, the screw is tightened.

This completes the installation of the glass wall structure.

Conclusion

A competent combination of a wall shelf with other details of the situation will create a harmonious design of the room, which is distinguished by individuality.

For storing household items and placing small household appliances ordering separate furniture for a room is not always advisable. For the study of design, the choice of materials suitable for the interior of the room, and the assembly of shelves, you will have to pay money, which is always not enough. A cheaper way to solve the problem is to come up with original design and make wall shelves with your own hands. To do this, you should familiarize yourself with the options for such products, their drawings and manufacturing technology, described below.

Types of homemade shelves

As you understand, there are countless design solutions for the manufacture and design of shelves. All designs are conditionally divided into 4 groups according to the method of attachment:

  1. Classic hinged, installed on a free section of the wall. Most often designed to store books, so they are made in a rectangular shape. But nothing prevents you from showing imagination and giving the product unusual view, making it square, round or multi-part, as shown in the drawing below.
  2. Corner shelves designed to effectively use the place where 2 walls form an internal or external corner. They are successfully used not only for arranging literature, but also for arranging flowers, various souvenirs and small household appliances (for example, a small TV or printer).
  3. Suspended, attached to a wall or ceiling with flexible stretch marks made of ropes or strings. One of interesting solutions- a flower shelf suspended on belts.
  4. Floor structures. These include open shoe cabinets and racks with a large number of cells for storing a variety of household items or tools.

Note. We say that the designs are divided conditionally, since there are a lot of combined options. For example, wall shelves for books with a protruding part can rest on the floor or be hung from the ceiling.

For self-manufacturing of shelves, the following materials are used:

  • wood and its derivatives - chipboard, MDF, plywood, laminate;
  • glass;
  • metal.

Metal chrome tubes here serve as fasteners

Wood materials are easily accessible and work well, so they are used most often. If you show imagination, you can make a beautiful shelf of any non-standard shape out of wood. To make the books inside less dusty, use simple solution- put sliding glass doors, then you get a nice closed cabinet.

simple glass cabinet

It is quite difficult to make a shelf entirely of metal or glass. In the first case, you need to have necessary tools, up to welding, and in the second you will have to work with tempered glass and special fasteners, a simple one may not withstand the load. So these materials are best used as decorative or fasteners, and the main part is assembled from wood.

Corner shelf with visible fixings

Making a simple wooden shelf

The simplest shelves on the wall, designed for books and small things, are a rectangular box, assembled by hand from boards or laminated chipboard. The latter option is convenient in all respects - the surface does not need to be processed, just adjust the dimensions and paste over the ends with veneer to match the color of the laminated layer.

Advice. No need to buy new chipboard if there are elements left at home old furniture. To ennoble them, it is enough to putty unnecessary holes and stick a special film with a wood pattern. For example, make the shelf white, as shown in the photo.

To assemble boards from solid wood, it is necessary to properly prepare - plan, sand and round sharp corners. The procedure for manufacturing a hinged shelf is as follows:

  1. Based on the drawing, mark the material for trimming using a tape measure and a pencil. Cut 4 blanks to size.
  2. Treat the surfaces of the sanded boards with varnish, and glue the ends of the chipboard with veneer.
  3. On the sidewalls, mark the attachment points and drill holes together with the horizontal panels. Twist them together with furniture screws - confirmations and install decorative plastic plugs.
  4. Use a white-coated fiberboard sheet as the back wall, securing it with short self-tapping screws.

Note. In order for solid wood parts to last longer, they should be treated with an antiseptic composition before applying varnish.

Finally, screw the mounting brackets on the back or prepare holes for flush wall mounting. If you see fit, you can glaze the front of the shelf by installing opening or sliding doors. For more information on how to make wooden bookshelves for a living room or a children's room, see the video:

How to hang a shelf on the wall

The last stage is the installation of a bookshelf on the wall in the planned place. There are 2 mounting methods:

  • on homemade or purchased brackets;
  • on hidden fasteners.

Regardless of the chosen mounting technology, the procedure remains the same. The first step is to mark the drilling points on the wall, guided by the mounting brackets. In this case, it is desirable to align the horizontal line between the points using building level. The installation algorithm is as follows:

  1. Using measurements, determine the position of the points, mark them with a pencil and check the horizontal line between them.
  2. Drill holes. Hammer plastic plugs under the brackets and tighten the screws so that they protrude by about 5 mm.
  3. Hang the shelf on the brackets. If it sticks out strongly forward, then the screws need to be screwed in 1-2 turns.
  4. When mounting on hidden anchor rods (so-called titans), insert them into the holes drilled in the wall and tighten with a wrench. At the end of the shelf, make reciprocal holes of the desired depth and put it on the titans.

Advice. It happens that the floors and ceilings in the apartment are uneven and the shelf, suspended according to measurements, visually looks crooked. Then only the first point is measured, and the second is determined "by eye" after mounting the product on one bracket.

How a wooden shelf is placed on hidden anchors is shown in the following video:

Corner shelves

It is appropriate to make such coasters in places where the walls of the room form inner corner. Such interior solutions not only look good, but also allow you to effectively use the space of the room. For example, a corner printer shelf next to computer desk will free up space on it for work and writing utensils. Conversely, a shelf placed on outer corner, will bulge into the room, so it will have to be made narrow and small, which is shown in the picture.

The technology for manufacturing a corner shelf is simple: it is necessary to cut a triangular blank from a laminated chipboard, ennoble it from the ends and put it in place. It is advisable to use hidden anchors if you plan to place one or more of these stands in the hall. Mounting is done like this:

  1. Putting a shelf on 2 "titans" sticking out of the walls at an angle will not work. Therefore, they must be placed on one side by drilling holes in the end of the chipboard and the wall.
  2. In the second face, you will need to cut a longitudinal groove where the sliding mount will be inserted.
  3. Make a hole in the adjacent wall, hammer in the plastic plug and screw in a steel hook bent at a 90° angle. Its end must be in a horizontal position.
  4. Put the shelf on the anchors installed on one side. In this case, the end of the hook will enter the groove and will not allow the countertop to sag from the load. The process is described in detail in the following video:

How to make hanging bookshelves

Here we propose to consider a creative design of a bookshelf made from an ordinary thick board with hanging on a rope or twine. The idea is simple: make a beautiful tabletop from the board by firing, and then tie it to two self-tapping screws screwed into the wall. Work is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Cut the board to size with an electric jigsaw or hacksaw. Handle sharp edges.
  2. Burn the surfaces with a blowtorch or gas burner to blackness.
  3. Sand the workpiece to remove the top layer of soot and clearly show the structure of the wood.
  4. Drill 2 holes on each side for twine. Apply varnish to the board and let it dry.

The resulting shelf is hung without fuss to self-tapping screws or hooks on a rope. Considering that the horizontal position of the board can be adjusted by the length of the suspension on one side or another, it is not necessary to scrupulously adjust the level of the hooks.

After firing and stripping, the pattern of wood fibers appears more clearly.

Note. If you use 2 belts instead of a rope, then you do not need to drill holes in the shelf, and simply screw the ends of the suspension to the wall, as is done in the photo.
