How to make a shelf in the bathroom with your own hands. DIY bathroom shelf: the process of making various models with your own hands How to make glass shelves in the bathroom

Bathroom rack - a device of several shelves fixed to each other, designed to store personal items. Properly selected shelving will allow you to save more space in the bath, become part of the decor, and will also be a useful fixture.

Kinds

Fixed

Such structures are fixed in various places without a way to move them around the bathroom. In turn, they share:

corner

The most practical look that allows you to use the places in the corners of the bathroom, which in turn are often empty. Usually presented in shelves fastened together on frames attached to the corners of the bathroom walls. Corner racks are often narrow in size.

The practicality lies in the fact that all the things on the shelves will be at hand at any time and you won’t have to be distracted looking for them. As a rule, personal hygiene products are stored on corner racks.

Suspended

An alternative for bathtubs where there is not enough floor space to accommodate storage equipment. Hanging racks consist of several tiers of shelves or panels fixed to the walls around the perimeter of the bathroom.

Such devices are extremely convenient for keeping towels, bath clothes, and light household items on them.

floor standing

Floor racks - the antipode hanging shelves, because sometimes, due to the fragility of the walls, their drilling is prohibited, they simply cannot withstand. Therefore, the floor will be, after all, by the way. It consists of multi-tiered shelves connected to each other and mounted on legs or a panel.

The floor rack can be placed in any part of the bathroom: under the sink so that it is not visible, next to another wall. Storage of household chemicals on such shelves would be advisable with safety precautions, in this embodiment, powders and cleaning liquids will not get into the eyes, mucous membranes.

moving

These designs will be a useful option for very small baths. Equipped with wheels, the racks can move around the perimeter of the bathroom without losing the contents. The drawer-like shelves are lined with hollow holes for ventilation.

Also, the material for the shelves is non-slip, which is especially necessary in the humid environment of the bathroom. When choosing a rack on wheels, you can change its place depending on the need.

Wooden shelving

The use of wooden shelving in the bathroom is advisable if you choose not natural wood. Due to condition high humidity, the tree, despite the protective varnishes and coatings, will soon begin to rot.

However, shelving made of MDF, chipboard can be placed in the bathroom. These designs are treated with moisture-repellent varnishes and products and are themselves made moisture resistant. Together, this gives a durable material, similar to wood, and not inferior to it in beauty.

metal shelving

The strength of metal shelving can not be compared with anyone else. Such material is convenient in caring for it, it is only necessary to wipe it from dust, and in case of severe contamination, wash it with soapy water. The metal structure can withstand quite a lot of weight and not tip over.

Also, the structure of the metal is not subject to rust, during the manufacture it is covered with an anti-corrosion compound. Forged rack with various carvings will decorate the bathroom.

Plastic shelving

Products made of such material are extremely convenient when moving them. The light weight of the structure will not cause trouble even for a child, and the plastic itself is durable, as it is not at all afraid of water. But the slightest use of force and such a rack can crack and break.

glass shelving

They take the first place in their fragility. When purchasing such furniture, it is important to pay attention to the support on which the glass shelves or drawers are fixed. Preference should be given to metal structures, due to their strength. Together with a strong metal fastening, the guarantee of glass preservation increases.

Caring for a glass shelving will take much more time than other types. soap scum appears much clearer on the glass, and its cleaning will require a lot of attention.

Options from Ikea

Ikea provides a wide range of bathroom shelving of all kinds.

Vesken is a plastic floor rack, 100 centimeters high and 36 centimeters wide. It looks compact in any part of the bath and is made in a universal white color. It also stands in the line of budget inexpensive racks. The creators of this shelving unit have made it as easy as possible to assemble it, just connect all the parts until it clicks, and it is ready to use.

Lillongen - corner rack made of chipboard with the use of plastic. It has 3 main shelves, the top of which is closed on top, so the “roof” of the structure can also be used and put everything you need there. Suitable for many stylistic solutions and has a current pale pistachio color.

Molger is a wooden floor rack, 140 centimeters high. The material is solid solid birch, varnished. It has 5 open shelves on each side, mounted on 4 thick wide legs that make it easier to access items placed on them. The color of the rack is presented in 2 types: light wood color and dark brown.

In the Ikea catalog, you can familiarize yourself with photographs of bathroom shelving in detail and choose the one that perfectly complements it.

DIY bathroom rack

To make a rack yourself, you do not need to spend a lot of money, effort and energy. It is enough to know what design, from what material is suitable for the interior.

Before starting work, make sure you have all necessary tools: drill, jigsaw, screws, self-tapping screws, construction ruler, level.

For the manufacture of a corner section for a bathroom from chipboard, it is important to take into account the parameters of the angle and correctly correlate them with the future design, otherwise it will not fit in the desired corner.

To begin with, measurements are taken, chipboard sheets of the required dimensions are bought, but at least 20 millimeters thick. A circle is drawn on the chipboard sheets, this is the future depth of the rack, and is cut into 4 parts equal to each other. A rail is placed in the corner intended for the future design, which imitates future shelves.

Point notes are made on the rail about how the shelves of the future rack will be located, at what height from each other. At the indicated points, recesses are cut with a drill, as well as on the rack itself. Then it is necessary to connect the structure with the corner in the drilled parts and fix it with self-tapping screws.

After all the fixing work, it is worth decorating the rack, which can be made to your taste, it is important not to forget to cover it with a moisture-resistant varnish.

Glass shelving is made using sheets of glass and metal fasteners. In the workshop, it is necessary to order sheets of glass of the required size; for this, measurements are made in advance. The glass is turned around the edges for safety.

In a hardware store, metal holders with deep recesses are bought, into which glass sheets will later need to be inserted. The holders are fastened with self-tapping screws to the wall and firmly fixed, and the glass sheets are inserted into the grooves of the holders.

Tips for decorating a bathroom

Minimalism is the head of everything. When choosing furniture and decorating things for the bathroom, it is important to be guided by a single rule - fewer details. So it will turn out to save more free space and not litter it.

Light gamma. Let the bathroom be done in light, pastel and warm shades. This will visually expand the space.

Angles. Be sure to use the corners of the bathroom to save space in other parts.

Which bathroom shelves to choose - 10 ideas and 1 master class

Bathroom shelves are one of the most effective ways storage

Having two small children made me organized to the point of disgrace. At some point, I realized that bathroom supplies should be at hand and not pose a danger to babies. And then bathroom shelves came to my rescue. What are they, which ones to choose and how to make them with my own hands - I will try to answer these and other questions in today's article.

What are bathroom shelves for?

In order of priority, I have identified the following reasons:

  1. Safety for children- everything is out of reach of the child, especially household chemicals and sharp cutting objects;
  2. Utility- when you reach out to the shampoo shelf, being sure that there is shampoo, and not shaving foam;
  3. Space saving– compactness worth its weight in gold, especially in small rooms;
  4. decor element- when the shelf for towels, among other things, looks beautiful.

What materials are bathroom shelves made of?

In our time, from which only shelves for the bathroom are made! But, nevertheless, the most popular materials remain:

  1. Wood;
  2. Glass;
  3. Metal;
  4. Plastic;
  5. Drywall.

Idea #1: Wooden Shelves

But you can save a lot on wood products if you make them yourself. Having several boards or pieces of wood available, you can assemble a very original and, at the same time, practical shelf. You will only have to spend money on a special water-repellent impregnation. Osmo Holzprotektor based on oils and wax for 1850 rubles is a great thing!

Idea #2: Glass shelves

Glass shelf with metal fittings will fit perfectly into modern interior in hi-tech style, SPA, . Depending on the material of the holders, the price of such a product ranges between 450 and 12,000 rubles.

A bathroom mirror with a shelf - transparent or mirrored - will look aesthetically pleasing. However, splash marks often remain on the glossy surface. Therefore, I strongly recommend installing them slightly above the mixer.

When choosing a glass product, lean in favor of impact-resistant glass.

Idea #3: Metal Shelves

Metal shelves are mainly made of stainless steel and brass. Such products are durable, ergonomic, resistant to moisture and mechanical stress. Stainless steel bathroom shelves cost differently, depending on the fixtures, the number of tiers, and the manufacturer. The price is in the range of 2000-18000 rubles.

Idea #4: Plastic Shelves

Plastic shelves are quite popular due to their low weight, moisture resistance, and relative compactness. Also, the price of such structures is very democratic - from 200 to 2000 rubles. The only negative is that over time the surface turns yellow and the appearance is lost.

Pay attention to models with perforations. Small holes prevent mold growth.

Idea #5: Drywall Shelves

If you are planning a bathroom, be sure to provide a place, or rather several, for drywall shelves. It is advisable to take care of them even at the repair stage, because it will be much easier to clad walls and niches at the same time.

If you have been using the bathroom for a long time, but are unhappy with storage systems, study the corners, as well as the place above the tank and. They are perfect for drywall constructions.

For the bathroom, use only moisture-resistant drywall! I recommend moisture-resistant drywall Knauf GSP-N 1500 × 600x12.5 mm, price 133 rubles. per sheet.

What are the shelves for the bathroom in place and method of installation

According to the place and method of installation, the shelves are divided into the following varieties:

  • Mounted;
  • Velcro;
  • floor;
  • corner;
  • Embedded .

Idea #6: Shelves

Hanging shelves - the most popular option, as this includes shelves made of any materials and installed at the top of the walls. This is an excellent replacement for mezzanines and wall cabinets.

If you have a spacious bathroom, hanging shelves can be installed anywhere. If the room is oversized, master the places where the walls are already partially occupied - above the washbasin, door or cistern.

Toilet paper can be stored on a shelf above front door. There is less chance that it will absorb moisture.

Idea #7: Velcro Shelves

To everyone who loves simplicity and does not want to bother with long-term solutions, I recommend Velcro shelves. Velcro is attached to the surface of the tile and this is where all the manipulations are finished. Such devices are designed for small vials and bottles, bath sponges and brushes.

Idea number 8: Floor structures

Floor shelves, despite some weightiness, are universal. They will come in very handy in a spacious bathroom, in a rectangular design, and also fit into a small room, in a corner version.

Here's another space-saving option - a bath screen with shelves and drawers. Such a hidden design can not only free up cluttered space, but also organize household chemicals, cosmetics and other bathroom accessories wisely.

Idea #9: Corner Shelves

I don’t know why, but many people underestimate the corners in the bathroom. But in vain - the corner can be the most convenient place for shelves, especially in a small bathroom. Here you can install floor structures, about which I wrote a little higher, and wall.

Options for corner shelves include materials such as plastic, glass, wood, stainless steel, etc. Such designs are quite durable and are designed for relatively heavy objects.

Idea #10: Built-in Shelves

One of the most popular ways to organize space in the bathroom is built-in shelves. Surely you are already interested in how to make a shelf between the bathroom and the wall. For this, a niche is made, into which shelves are subsequently mounted. They can be made from the same material as the niche (I wrote about them a little earlier), as well as glass and wood.

Such designs are durable, convenient to use, aesthetic. In fact, they are in no way inferior to cabinets, except that there are no doors. But their charm lies in the fact that everything is in sight and at hand.

Master class: How to make a shelf on the ropes yourself

Such a shelf in the bathroom with their own hands is within the power of everyone. For this we need:

  • Thick rope;
  • Drill with a drill 5-6 mm more than the thickness of the rope;
  • Scissors;
  • Clamps.

The instruction is as follows:

  1. Pre-paint the boards of the same size (3-4 pieces);
  2. Drill holes in the boards at the same distance from the edges (total 2 holes on each side);
  3. Pass the rope through the holes;
  4. Check the distance between the shelves and the horizontal level;
  5. Tie each end of the rope in a large knot under the lowest shelf (total 4 knots);
  6. Fix the bottom of each subsequent shelf with clamps.
  7. Your handmade bathroom shelf! It remains to install it.

Conclusion

Today you got acquainted with the varieties of bathroom shelves, and also learned how you can make simple bathroom shelves yourself.

If you are looking for detailed master class on how to make more complex options for bathroom shelves with your own hands, I advise you to watch the video in this article.

If you want to express gratitude, add a clarification or objection, ask the author something - add a comment or say thanks!

Modern bathrooms usually have a small area, although for normal functioning it needs to allocate space for various small and large items. For the rational use of the volume of this room, you can install shelves in the bathroom with your own hands with minimal cost. With their help, not only will the useful area used for various purposes in this room increase, but also the design of your bathroom will acquire its own unique charm.

A built-in homemade shelf will help save space in the bathroom.

Shelf selection

From a wide variety of types of this type of furniture, you need to choose the options that are suitable for your bathroom. You can also use a combination of several different types. Consider some types of shelves often used when equipping this room:

In the bathroom of standard sizes and configurations, you can buy a standard set of furniture.

  • types installed under the bathtub and sink;
  • various corner and wall options.

According to the material used, the shelves are divided into the following types:

  • wooden;
  • plastic;
  • metal;
  • glass.

By execution, they are:

  • stationary;
  • removable;
  • open type;
  • in small cabinets.

Of all the types of shelves listed above, stationary options are most often used, which have the following advantages:

  • made from modern materials in full compliance technological process such a shelf has great strength and moisture resistance, which allows you to fix it in any pre-marked place;
  • such a shelf makes it possible to fully use the free space in niches and openings, where it is usually not possible to install a cabinet or attach a hinged structure;
  • such a shelf, made on a brick basis and installed between the bathroom and the wall, serves to store small items (shampoo, etc.);
  • fits freely into any bathroom interior design solution.

Use of lockers

To store washing powders, medicines, cosmetics, hair dryers, shaving accessories in the bathroom, it is best to use cabinets or closed shelves. They are sold in the form of headsets and have the following advantages:

Do-it-yourself shelves can be made of drywall and tiled.

  • the use of modern materials allows you to create moisture-resistant and durable furniture;
  • for self-manufacturing, you can use materials with a wide range color solutions, which will allow you to fit such cabinets into the overall design of your bathroom.

But with the independent manufacture of such shelves, one must have the skills to handle various tools.

Consider now the corner structures.

Usually in any bathroom there are free corners that can be used for mounting shelves.

Such shelves are relatively easy to make on their own, they have the following positive properties:

  • they can be made from almost any material;
  • they take up relatively little space.

Now let's focus on those used in the manufacture various kinds shelves materials:

Glass and metal are quite durable materials, so the processing of these materials with your own hands is somewhat difficult.

  • wood is a very good and convenient option for self-manufacturing shelves of any type;
  • plastic is good cheap material, easy to care for. When making shelves with your own hands from plastic sheets, you can make them of any kind;
  • glass and metal are durable materials, but for home-made structures, their use is fraught with certain difficulties. Although in the construction markets you can buy blanks for the manufacture of the structures you need.

Shelf installation

There are two ways to make this work:

  • buy material and make shelves out of it;
  • use blanks sold on the furniture market to create such structures.

Let's consider both options.

How to make shelves in the bathroom in a few hours? The technology of work looks like this:

open wooden shelves You can do it yourself or buy ready-made ones.

  • take measurements in those places in the bathroom where it is decided to install shelves;
  • in the construction market we buy boards (planed and dry), self-adhesive film, paint and primer for wood, the so-called moldings and various screws, dowels, etc.;
  • cut the boards to the desired size;
  • with the help of screws and metal corners, a structure is assembled from cut segments;
  • the surface of the resulting shelves is degreased, cleaned of dust and wiped with a dry cloth;
  • a primer is applied to the surfaces to be painted with a brush and after it dries three layers of paint;
  • you can use self-adhesive film instead of paint. To do this, tear off the protective paper layer from its back side and carefully glue it onto a small section of the shelf. Then, gradually tearing off new layers of paper, we paste over the entire surface of the shelves;
  • to mount your product to the wall, you can buy L-shaped fasteners (steel) in the store and, having drilled tiles in the bathroom with a Pobedite drill, fix them on the wall with dowels, and then hang a shelf on them;
  • to decorate the resulting structure, purchased moldings are used - they are glued with glue on the ends of the boards from which the shelves are made.

Now about how to use purchased blanks in these works. For example, you want to install glass shelves. To do this, the following parts are bought on the construction market:

  • pieces of glass cut to size;
  • fasteners and dowels.

The technology for installing such shelves is as follows:

To properly organize the space of the bathroom, you can use the entire free volume under the bathroom. At the extreme end of the bathroom, you can install at least one shelf.

  • mark the places where the shelves are attached to the wall in the bathroom, using a level to accurately determine the horizontal alignment of the markup;
  • drill holes in the tile with a drill and, after cleaning them, insert plastic clamps for dowels;
  • screw the fasteners for the shelves into the wall and insert a glass sheet into them.

According to the same scheme, you can assemble a structure made of wood and MDF.

For the proper organization of the entire space of your bathroom, you need to use all the free space under the bathroom. Usually from its extreme end there is enough space to install at least one shelf.

Most bathrooms have limited free space, which makes it difficult to accommodate various bath accessories and cosmetics.

For these purposes, shelves and hanging cabinets are used. This is quite comfortable furniture, but it has several serious drawbacks.

  1. Lack of mobility. The shelves are fixed to the wall, if necessary, it is quite difficult to move them to a new place. There will always be traces of fixation in the form of holes on the wall. In addition, if shelves or wall cabinets have been used for a long time, then behind them the shade of the wall decoration will certainly change slightly. Removing traces of furniture fixation is very difficult, and in many cases impossible. Only a complete replacement of wall cladding can completely restore their original state. Making repairs because of several shelves is economically unprofitable, long and difficult.
  2. The walls in the bathroom are often finished with plasterboard. This construction material professional builders are very fond of: it is easy to work with, it allows you to avoid labor-intensive operations, perfectly levels the surface of the walls, you can hide engineering communications behind the cladding. But drywall has two very serious drawbacks: low moisture resistance and extremely low physical strength.

    Do not believe manufacturers who claim that they have learned how to produce moisture-resistant drywall. Try dipping a piece of material in water and see for yourself what "high resistance" to moisture means. If the material does not have direct contact with water, then wetting processes still occur, only more slowly. And the second disadvantage of drywall boards is very low strength. No special dowels can guarantee proper stability of shelves and cabinets fixed to a plasterboard wall.

Why do we recommend shelving? They can be installed in bathrooms with any wall finish, they have their own load-bearing elements. In addition, this furniture is mobile, if desired, it can not only be moved around the bathroom, but also used in other rooms. And the last. In terms of capacity, variety and functionality, shelving is far ahead of all existing options bathroom furniture.

First, one general and most important piece of advice. The bathroom is concentrated a large number of engineering networks: cold and hot water, sewerage, electrical wiring, elements of the ventilation system, etc. The rack should be placed in such a place that it does not restrict access to networks. This is very important not only for the maintenance of pipelines, but also for the fastest possible elimination of various emergencies. As for design issues, there are several options for placing shelving.

Shelving placementShort description
Allows you to maximize the use of free space in the bathroom. Such a rack has three vertical supports, shelves in the form of triangles or a sector (segment) of a circle. Pretty functional furniture, but the linear parameters are limited by the size of the corner. The disadvantage is significant restrictions on the length and width, the rack is considered stationary.
The rack is installed at free wall, it is possible to transfer furniture to another place as needed. Dimensions are limited only by the wishes of users. The number of shelves is coordinated with the number of bathroom users.
The location of the rack is a niche in the bathroom. Niches can have different sizes, taking into account these parameters, a rack is made. A fairly common option for installing furniture. The advantage is maximum stability, the fall of the rack is practically excluded.

bathroom rack

In this article, we will not talk about various options interior design, there is only one universal piece of advice here. Choose the option of the rack and its location that you like. You can listen to the advice of designers, but your decision should be final. None of the advisers will use the bathroom, it is not for them to judge what is pleasant and convenient for you personally.

Shelving materials

  1. Glued plywood. For all indicators, it cannot be considered optimal solution. It is not only expensive, but also does not tolerate high humidity and temperature.
  2. Laminated OSB or chipboard. The performance of the materials is somewhat better than that of plywood. The disadvantage is that the plates are afraid of direct contact with water. After a water breakthrough in the bathroom, such furniture will have to be overhauled or thrown away. And one more problem - these materials are made using artificial resins, and all of them emit harmful chemical compounds (formaldehydes) into the air in one quantity or another.
  3. natural boards. According to professionals, the most best material for shelving. Even a long stay in water does not lower the quality of wood; after drying, it completely restores its original properties. As for the price, the small amount of expensive material allows it to be purchased by all consumers without exception.

It is on the last material for shelving that we will dwell in detail.

To facilitate work and improve quality, it is desirable to have several home woodworking machines: thickness gauge, circular saw, manual electric saw. If they are not there, then you can do all the work manually, but this will take a lot of time and effort, and the quality will be noticeably worse. A set of carpentry tools is required in any case.

Important. Prepare before starting work workplace. It should be clean and level, provide easy access to machines and tables. Separately store finished parts, remove garbage in a timely manner. Experienced carpenters know that the time spent on maintaining order is more than returned in the production of work. In addition, it is labor safety.

Step 1. Draw a sketch of the future rack. Choose sizes taking into account the parameters of the bathroom and the features of the items placed on the shelves. You can make all the shelves the same, you can reduce or increase some of them in size. Linear parameters must be indicated on the drawing, these data will be required not only during the production of work, but also to calculate the amount of lumber.

Practical advice. Buy better planed edged boards, it will speed up the work a lot. The thickness of the boards is within 20 mm, the width is 15–20 cm. For bathrooms, it is recommended to use conifers wood, they work better in conditions of high humidity. Coniferous lumber contains natural resins that prevent decay processes.

Step 2 Start cutting the material according to the drawing data. Plan your cutting in such a way as to reduce the amount of non-productive waste. If the length of the lumber does not allow you to use it to the maximum, then you can change the dimensions of the rack, at this stage it is not too late. Be sure to fix all changes in the drawing, do not rely on memory. Often there are situations when it is necessary for one reason or another to take a break in work, a full-fledged modified drawing will avoid annoying mistakes.

The boards may have minor damage to the side surfaces, this is not a problem. During the assembly of the rack, defective surfaces are installed from the back of the furniture.

Cutting is much better done with a pendulum saw. It precisely maintains cut corners, leaves smooth edges. In addition, it is one of the safest woodworking machines. And another plus - the pendulum saw allows you to adjust not only the angle of the cut, but also the depth, which greatly facilitates the process of preparing the connection of individual wooden parts into a single rigid structure.

Practical advice. If you have many blanks of the same size, then never measure them individually. Use the first one as a template and make all subsequent ones from it. In this way it is possible to avoid a slight spread in length resulting from measurement errors.

Step 3 Proceed to marking blanks for connections. Before that, carefully sort them according to their location. front side, do not forget that all minor problems wood must be placed on the back side. Gather blanks of the same size together, align their ends with a square and squeeze with two clamps. Make marks with a pencil for each workpiece, they will be completely the same, which will facilitate the process of assembling the rack. According to the drawings for the square, make marks on the ends of the blanks. According to these marks, the boards will be washed down to connect the shelves.

Step 4 Do the same operations for vertical racks, pay attention to which side is better to choose half a tree.

Practical advice. Apply the square only on one side of the board. The fact is that the planes can have a slight deviation from parallelism. If it is applied on both sides, then the marking for washing down will be inaccurate.

Step 5 Cutting out landing slots for shelves is much easier with an electric jigsaw.

Before starting work, check the cut of the tool, it should be exactly 90 ° to the end of the board. Use only a serviceable and adjusted tool, otherwise it will not be possible to avoid marriage. It will always take much more time to fix a marriage than to prepare and check the tool. If you do not have an electric jigsaw, then you can make cuts with a hand saw, but this will require more practical skills. Pay attention to the illumination of the workplace. Lack of light increases the likelihood of errors and is very tiring to the eyes.

Jigsaw cuts slightly worsen the appearance of the cut, there are always small chips. If you want to have the perfect look of the shelves, then use a saw for figured cutting.

Step 6 Check the condition of all blanks. If there are roughness or chips, sand them a little with sandpaper. At the same time, clean off the pencil marking lines, if you cover the furniture with a clear varnish, they will be noticeable.

Step 7 Start building your shelving. Insert the slots in the shelves into the slots in the uprights. Do not forget to follow the direction in which the blanks with problem areas are facing. When you have done all the dimensions and cuts correctly, the parts will go in with little effort. For assembly, use a wooden mallet or an ordinary hammer. But between the parts and the tool, be sure to make a gasket from a small piece of board. This will eliminate the appearance of dents on visible surfaces.

Practical advice. For inexperienced craftsmen, the half-wood connection often turns out to be loose, which causes the rack to stagger. In such cases, the assembly must be done using wood glue. Large gaps after the glue has dried will have to be sealed with special putties or sealants.

Step 8. Screw the side boards, top and bottom to the assembled shelves. You can fix them with ordinary self-tapping screws, pay attention that they are made of stainless alloys. Side surfaces can also be assembled on shkantiki, but this is much more difficult to do. Inexperienced craftsmen are not advised to use dowels. To make the screw easier to screw in, first drill holes in the board with a diameter of 1.0–1.5 mm less than the diameter of the screws.

This completes the assembly work on the manufacture of the rack. Clean it of dust and varnish, stain or paint.

Rack from a bar for a bathroom

In terms of complexity, this option for making a rack is almost no different. But the appearance is completely different, you can choose from two options you like. The set of machines, tools and fixtures is the same as in the previous version. For the manufacture of the rack, you will need a 45 × 60 beam for the bearing racks and boards for the shelves. Optimal height for the rack it is considered 1.5 m, adjust the width of the shelves and the distance between them yourself. Work should begin with a drawing. Draw it in as much detail as possible, indicating all dimensions and connection points.

Step 1. Sort lumber, check their quality. Trim the ends of the posts in length, cut them at an angle of 90 °.

Step 2 For rails, you can use a beam cut in half in thickness. Cut the timber with a circular saw, work very carefully, do not forget about safety. Use wooden sticks to feed the timber, do not keep your hands in the cutting area of the saw.

Step 3 Cut off the slats from the blanks, dimensions according to the drawing. Measure accurately with a tape measure and square. We have already mentioned that it is very convenient to cut blanks with an electric pendulum saw. If you are doing self-manufacturing furniture made of wood, then such a saw is a must-have in the workshop.

Step 4 To attach the crossbars to the racks, you need to make cuts. The width of the cuts should be equal to or slightly less than the width of the crossbars. The depth of cut is not more than half the thickness of the rack.

Practical advice. To facilitate and speed up the application of marks for cut, first mark one side, and then apply the workpiece to it along the width and apply the second mark.

Step 5 Make cuts on the racks. It is better to use a chair. It's pretty cheap, but very useful device. The cutting angle is adjustable and its depth is easily controlled. The miter box has a saw with fine teeth, which improves the quality of the ends. The depth of cut should be slightly less than the thickness of the rails.

Step 6 With a sharp wide chisel, select the grooves for the crossbars in the racks. Hold the chisel with a flat plane towards you, tap the handle with a hammer, remove the wood from the slots in portions. If a knot is caught, then reduce the width of the tree being knocked out, work with the chisel more carefully, do not rush. If the technology is violated, a large crack may appear, the rack will have to be discarded. Align the groove with a chisel. Great accuracy should not be achieved, this part of the groove is hidden by a cross member. The main condition is that the depth of all grooves at the highest point must be the same.

Step 7 Connect the two racks with crossbars. Lay them on a flat table and use a hammer to plant them transversely in the prepared places. To increase the strength of the connection, screw self-tapping screws to the crossbars. The length depends on the thickness of the crossbars. But you need to remember that for all wood hardware there is one universal rule: the thickness of the part to be joined should be no more than two thirds of the hardware length. For example, if the thickness of the crossbars in our case is 20 mm, then the length of the screws should be more than 30 mm. Of course, you should pay attention so that the end of the self-tapping screw does not go through the rack through.

Practical advice. To exclude the possibility of splitting thin connected elements, it is recommended to pre-drill holes with a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the hardware.

Before twisting the crossbars, it is advisable to glue the saddle and the crossbar itself with glue.

Screwing in self-tapping screws

Step 8 If you have a manual router, then you can make a pattern with a curly cutter on the outer parts of the rack. The second side of the rack is made in the same way. Next, you can start making shelves. Boards with a thickness of 20 mm or more will be required, the width depends on the purpose of the rack and should be indicated on the previously drawn drawing.

Shelf manufacturing

Step 1. If the boards are not prepared, then they need to be passed through the jointer from both sides.

Practical advice. For those who are willing to do wooden crafts in the home workshop, professionals strongly recommend buying one of the types of combined woodworking machines. They operate on 220 V voltage, perform many operations, and in terms of the quality of the treated surfaces, they are in no way inferior to modern industrial equipment.

For improvement appearance shelves, process their surfaces with a portable manual milling cutter.

Step 2 Spread the junction of the parts with carpentry glue and fix the elements with self-tapping screws. Fasten all shelves according to the same algorithm. Allow time for the glue to dry completely, this will take at least 24 hours.

Glue is applied with a brush

Step 3 To improve the appearance of the rack, all self-tapping screws must be replaced with wooden dowels. The diameter of the shkantik depends on the size of the furniture. Prepare a drill for drilling holes for dowels. Its diameter should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the shkantiki. Mark the drilling depth on the drill. For these purposes, you can simply wind masking tape or electrical tape at the right distance from the end of the drill.

Unscrew the screw

Step 5 Spread the dowel and hole with wood glue. Install the dowel in the hole and hammer it into place. Remove excess glue once with a sponge moistened with water. Remember that it is very difficult to remove high-quality glue from the surface after drying, in most cases then you will have to specifically close up the places of contamination.

Installation of dowels

In this way, secure all the shelves on the rack.

If there is no desire to engage in the installation of dowels, then during the connection with self-tapping screws, you need to make holes of a larger diameter for their head. After twisting, the holes are sealed with putty on wood of the appropriate shade.

Step 6 Finishing work. Clean the rack from dust, sand problem areas with sandpaper. The assembled rack can be left unprocessed, it will look very original and fashionable, many designers advise doing just that. But we recommend finishing the outer surfaces with at least two coats. clear varnish. Such a coating not only protects the lumber from moisture, but also greatly simplifies the process of caring for furniture. The fact is that the surface of untreated boards quickly gets dirty, stains can only be removed by grinding or full painting. Conclusion: it is not always necessary to listen to the opinion of designers, they should not use the rack, they see it only in the picture of the design project.
