Penoplex appointment. Penoplex: technical characteristics, market overview. Do-it-yourself foam insulation

is a building heat-insulating material in the form of extruded polystyrene foam boards, which is in demand due to its lightness, strength and durability. In structure, it is similar to the usual foam, but it has a greater density.

Barely visible pores of insulation ranging in size from 0.1 to 1 mm are the result of new manufacturing technologies. By appearance, the slabs consist of a homogeneous material that is actually finely porous with insulated cells providing low thermal conductivity and water tightness.

A variety of grades and enhanced strength make it possible to use it for insulating floors, roofs, and foundations.

Dimensions, thickness and cost

The stability of thermal insulation properties allows the use of plates of medium thickness from 35 to 50 mm. This is an average for a standard solution in temperate climates.

The increased thickness of the foam up to 70 mm or more is used in the northern regions, where the temperature often drops to -30 0 C. This approach is justified, especially since the usual thickness of other heaters reaches 150 mm.

The dimensions of the plates are unified by the manufacturer up to standard 1200 mm in length and 600 mm in width.

In comparison with other types of heaters, the cost of penoplex is quite high: the price of 1 sq.m of a sheet is on average $5. If the material is modified with improved qualities, including flame retardant additives, then the price will be $ 7-8 per 1 sq.m.

Production technology and scope

The specificity of the manufacture of foam plastic is aimed at improving the strength technical characteristics of the material. The process of extrusion from the raw mass in special furnaces gives it special properties.

First, polystyrene granules under conditions high humidity and temperatures are mixed with the foaming agent. The catalyst is a composition of carbon dioxide (CO2) and freon. The composition is melted in furnaces and resembles lush cream.

Then, through the extrusion unit, the extrusion of the substance begins, the freon gradually escapes, and the cells are filled with simple air.

The use of penoplex in the construction industry has practically no restrictions and, thanks to its technical characteristics, can significantly reduce the cost of other expendable materials and energy resources.

Currently, the heat insulator is in demand in different climatic conditions for insulation and protection:

  • foundations and walls of low-rise buildings;
  • balconies and loggias;
  • pools and wells;
  • ceilings and basements;
  • floors and ceilings;
  • water supply systems;
  • airfield runways;
  • railways and highways;

Penoplex of different categories is widely used in the process of reconstruction of buildings due to its high resistance to changes in the external environment and chemical influences. Use material for manufacturing.

Material Properties

The main characteristics of the insulation comply with the requirements of building codes:

  1. Low thermal conductivity. The average level corresponds to 0.027–0.031 W/m. The indicator is the best in the class of heaters. At the same time, its difference from related materials, for example, mineral wool, is not so significant. But the combination of low thermal conductivity with enhanced structure density provides noticeable advantages. An important factor is the invariance of the indicator, significant fluctuations in various conditions are not fixed, therefore, the use of foam plastic is allowed without an additional moisture-proof layer both on roofs and attics, and on foundations, floors, and basements.
  2. Fire resistance. Fire resistance is characterized by categories G3 or G4, which means a moderate level that exceeds the properties of foam that supports combustion. For foam, operating temperatures from -50° to +70°C are acceptable. In conditions of open fire, the destruction of the material occurs. The process of melting begins, but not burning. Some types of penoplex are distinguished by enhanced processing with chemical reagents for the manifestation of self-extinguishing. This improved quality corresponds to complete fire safety with extended temperature regime operation.
  3. Moisture resistance. Water absorption for a period of 28 days is 0.4% of the volume. Moisture enters only into the outer pores of the insulation, which are open during cutting and installation of the plates. Closed cells remain unchanged. In fact, it can be argued that the material does not allow moisture to pass through. For the insulation of facades and roofs of buildings, such indicators of moisture resistance are very significant.
  4. High compressive strength. This figure is 25-35 kg / m 3 and is unsurpassed among polystyrene foam insulation. Compressive strength is achieved through an even distribution of tiny cells with good adhesion, which improve the strength characteristics of the material. Penoplex does not change dimensions even under heavy loads. Plates are very difficult to break. Only material of small thickness of 20 mm is subject to damage, but there is no crumbling or crushing along the fault line, unlike other related heaters.
  5. Weak vapor permeability. Increased resistance is reflected in equal indicators of foam 2 cm high and a layer of roofing material.
  6. Long service life. The warranty period of application is 50 years, taking into account atmospheric effects. Under favorable climatic conditions, the plates will last much longer while maintaining all their characteristics.
  7. Environmental friendliness. The use of freon in the manufacture of insulation is absolutely harmless: this type is non-flammable, non-toxic, and does not cause damage to the ozone layer. Ecological properties are interconnected with the biostability of the insulation, the absence of toxic substances. The material is not subject to biological decay, therefore, it does not need to create special storage conditions, the plates can be placed on sites without shelters from precipitation or temperature changes.
  8. Accessibility in installation and processing. You can cut the plate with an ordinary clerical knife. Light weight allows you to independently sheathe the walls without additional effort in the construction of special frames. The material adheres well to the glue. Weather conditions do not interfere with installation.
  9. Resistance to aggressive substances. Most of the building mixtures and preparations are not able to damage the penoplex, which does not react with them. These include organic and inorganic acids, alkalis, water-based paints, salt solutions, ammonia, cement or concrete mixtures, alcohols and oils, bleach. Extruded polystyrene foam is practically not characterized by chemical activity. Attention! Exceptions are esters, gasolines, formaldehydes, oil-based paints.
  10. High sound insulation. In private housing construction, the sound insulation factor is very important. Penoplex solves this problem.

For most Russian regions characteristic low temperature in winter, and other seasons do not guarantee comfortable weather for people.

Therefore, the problem of thermal insulation of building structures in our country especially relevant.

Manufacturers are constantly developing new heaters that can protect the house from heat loss.

During the time during which this insulation is produced, several of its varieties have been developed. Each one is for insulation. various kinds structures and operation in various conditions. Main differences between varieties of penoplex - characteristics of density and water resistance.

Important: when exposed to foam low temperatures the insulation does not change its heat-insulating qualities.

Although penoplex refers to universal heaters, manufacturers recommend use each of its types in accordance with its intended use. The name received from the foam manufacturers by each type of this insulation indicates exactly where it can show its best qualities.

Varieties of penoplex

Representing each of the types of penoplex under the speaking names, manufacturers greatly facilitate the choice of the required type of insulation for consumers. On the market of insulating materials are the following types of foam:

  • "Roof"- lightweight waterproof insulation with a density of 28-33 kg / m³. It is used for thermal insulation of a roof of any kind.
  • "Wall"- the density of this insulation, which is used both for external and for internal insulation walls, is 25-33 kg / m³.
  • "" - the high density of the penoplex of this brand (29-35 kg / m³) and its excellent water resistance is used for warming basements and foundations.
  • "" - insulation is most often used in the insulation of loggias, balconies and city apartments. Material density 25-35 kg/m³.
  • "" - all the characteristics of this type of penoplex correspond to the brand "Comfort". However, due to its high rigidity, it is able to withstand a large compressive load. This modification of penoplex is used in professional construction and is suitable for various types of surfaces.
  • "Penoplex 45"- the high density of this insulation (35-47 kg / m3) allows you to use it to protect against the effects of low temperatures on various types of roads. They are also used for insulating the exploited roof.
  • "Penoplex 75"- a special insulation having a density of 40-53 kg / m³. It is used in the construction of runways at airfields.

Methods for attaching foam plastic to various surfaces

When insulating foam walls
made of brick or concrete, their preliminary preparation is required, which ensures reliable fastening of the insulation to their surface.

Especially important this stage when insulating a building that has already been in operation, on which there may be remnants of decoration, dirt, paint.

For secure fastening penoplex to brick and concrete walls initially use glue, and after it dries, it is additionally fixed with dish-shaped dowels made of plastic.

When installing foam boards, they are laid in a checkerboard pattern, that is, the joints of each next row should be above the middle of the plates of the previous row.

Important: before starting the installation of foam, a start-profile is attached to the wall. The first row of insulation boards will rest on it.

When using foam joint problems usually do not occur, since the edges of the plates are curly and do not form cracks. If gaps nevertheless appear, then they are filled with mounting foam.

Preparation of wooden surfaces to foam insulation also begins with the cleaning of facades. In this case, the old finish is cleaned, during which protrusions and places affected by mold and fungus are removed.

Seams and existing cracks are carefully puttied, and then the entire wooden surface treated with an antiseptic. The further process of foam insulation is fundamentally different from working with brick walls.

Important: due to the gas permeability of foam plastic, this insulation cannot be laid directly on the walls. Such fastening of the penoplex leads to the accumulation of moisture under it, which causes the wood to rot.

Therefore, between the insulation boards and wooden walls envisaged air gap. Penoplex is mounted using a frame fixed to the wall, made of wooden bars or a profile. The distance between the parts of the frame must correspond to the dimensions of the foam boards so that the insulation fits snugly between them.

Penoplex is an extruded form of expanded polystyrene. An improved version of the foam is made by extruding polystyrene and special additives. In order not to get confused among the variety of types and choose the best option for thermal insulation of the house from the inside and out, you need to familiarize yourself with the technical characteristics, scope and installation technology of each type, study the weaknesses and identify all the advantages of foam.

To understand the principle of operation and effectiveness of a heat-insulating material, it is necessary to know its structure, properties, positive and negative sides.

Penoplex - thermal insulation material new generation

Production and composition of insulation

The manufacturing process of penoplex consists of the following stages:

  1. Expanded polystyrene granules are placed in an extruder, where they are heated to a temperature of 130-140°C.
  2. Porophores are introduced into the mass - foaming additives.
  3. Thick foam is extruded from the extruder, enters the conveyor and cut into sheets of a given size.

The composition of the porophores in the composition of the foam

The composition of the penoplex, in addition to polystyrene foam and porophores, includes:

  • antioxidants - prevent thermal oxidation during processing and do not allow destruction when using insulation;
  • flame retardants - reduce the flammability of the material;
  • antistatic agents, light stabilizers and modifiers protect against the harmful effects of the external environment.

Technical characteristics of penoplex

Properties of extruded polystyrene

Evaluation of the technical characteristics of penoplex is the basis for making a decision on the use of one or another type of insulation.

Based on the digital indicators, we can conclude that penoplex is an effective heat-insulating material. However, for objectivity, it is worth considering its properties in more detail:

  1. Minimum water absorption is one of the main qualities of a heater. Water can only penetrate into damaged outer cells, which were deformed during installation. There is no access to water inside the material.
  2. Low thermal conductivity. Due to the cellular structure and the lack of water absorption, the foam insulation has a low coefficient of thermal conductivity. The combination of these qualities makes it possible to use the material for insulating roofs, foundations, and facades without an additional moisture-proof layer.
  3. Water vapor resistance. The vapor barrier of a 2 cm thick foam board is equal to that of one layer of wall roofing material.
  4. Resistant to compression and mechanical stress. Due to the extrusion production technology, the smallest cells are distributed evenly, increasing the strength of the material. Under heavy loads, dents up to 1 mm deep may appear.
  5. Ease and convenience of installation. Despite the low thermal conductivity, penoplex has a low weight. This quality makes it easier to climb to a great height and does not entail a significant weighting of the structure.
  6. Duration of operation. Most manufacturers give a guarantee for extruded polystyrene foam up to 50 years. It should be noted that such a period is not exaggerated, since the material has passed multiple tests (freezing, thawing and heating to high temperatures).
  7. Additional pluses: good sound-proof qualities and low chemical activity.

Penoplex is light weight and easy to handle

The standard sizes of penoplex are:

  • length - 1200-2400 mm;
  • width - 600 mm;
  • thickness - 20-120 mm.

Burning extruded polystyrene foam

Weaknesses and disadvantages of insulation

Despite a wide list of positive characteristics, penoplex has some disadvantages:

  1. High level of combustibility (G3-G4) and smoke formation. The ability to self-extinguishing depends on the quality of the material, the presence of flame retardants and the composition of the decorative fabric. After the ceasefire, foam plastic smokes caustically.
  2. In the production, polymers are used, which, upon contact with UV rays, change their characteristics and can emit toxic fumes. In view of this, the external use of penoplex is considered optimal.
  3. Some petroleum products and organic solvents deform the insulation, changing its structure. These reagents include:
    • formaldehyde/formalin;
    • acetone/methyl ethyl ketone;
    • complex and simple ethyls;
    • benzene, xylene, toluene and similar hydrocarbons;
    • polyesters - epoxy resin hardeners;
    • oil paints;
    • kerosene, diesel fuel and gasoline.

Comparative characteristics of parameters different heaters

Comparison with other thermal insulation materials

The effectiveness of a heater is primarily determined by its thermal conductivity. The lower this indicator, the more heat is stored inside the room. The scope of the heat-insulating material largely depends on its density and vapor permeability. Comparative characteristics of popular heaters are presented in the form of a table.

As you can see, penoplex (extruded polystyrene foam) has an average thermal conductivity, inferior in terms of thermal insulation properties to polyurethane foam, polyurethane mastic and roofing felt. An important advantage of the use of "foamy" products is the absence of butt joints, as with plates.

Interesting. To preserve heat, foam insulation made of foamed PVC paste is sometimes used. In addition to the thermal insulation function, the material also performs a decorative role. However, it does not tolerate humidity and temperature fluctuations well, therefore it is recommended for indoor use.

The thickness of the insulation to ensure heat capacity

High heat capacity allows to reduce the thickness of the insulation.

  • Q is the thickness of the wall structure, m;
  • R - heat transfer resistance (depending on the climatic zone, the average value is 2.1 sq. m ° C / W);
  • Y is the thermal conductivity of the insulation, W/sq. m°C.

For example, when laying bricks, the minimum wall thickness should be: 2.1 * 0.7 \u003d 1.47 m. The same foam wall with a density of 30 kg / cu. m will be thick: 2.1 * 0.036 \u003d 0.076 m, or 76 mm.

Scope of use of pressed heat insulator

The scope of extruded polystyrene foam is very wide:

  • Foundation protection. Insulation of the base of the building reduces the depth of soil freezing and increases the service life of the waterproofing material.
  • Thermal insulation of the basement. Installation of plates is possible directly on gravel.
  • Floor and ceiling insulation. Penoplex sheets are easy to mount on level ground, when cutting waste is minimal.
  • Creation of an insulating layer of the roof, attic room and a balcony. These measures reduce the cost of heating a home or office space.
  • Insulating a house from the outside with foam plastic is a popular way to reduce heat loss. It will be possible to complete the facade cladding on your own - the technology is quite simple and does not involve the use of expensive tools.

Specifications of different brands

Principles for marking heat-insulating boards by density

The modern designation of different types of penoplex is an alphanumeric code. The marking indicates the properties and purpose of the insulation.

Penoplex 31 and 31C - characterized by low strength and a maximum density of 30.5 kg / cu. m. The difference between the two categories in the flammability class is that the first option contains flame retardants that increase resistance to fire. Heaters 31 and 31C provide thermal insulation of static structures: sewer pipes, engineering and heat-conducting systems.

According to GOST, foam 35 should have a density in the range of 28-38 kg / cu. m and compressive strength of 83 kPa. Such indicators determine the versatility of the material. Type 35 is in demand for insulation of walls, floors, pipelines and foundations. Plus - a weak ignition.

Penoplex 45 and 45C have similar characteristics. High density allows its use in the construction of runways, roads, thermal insulation of the foundation and floors in production and storage facilities.

Penoplex-Wall parameters

Classification of insulation by purpose

Along with the marking described above, there is another system for designating different types of penoplex. It is simpler, and the name of the insulation indicates its scope.

Penoplex-Stena (Series C) is mainly used for external insulation walls and in the arrangement of plastered facades. Finishing the basement and internal partitions improves the sound insulation and energy saving of the house.

Advice. When deciding which penoplex to choose for wall insulation, it is better to give preference to the material of the C series. Its characteristics are in many ways similar to extruded polystyrene foam grade 31C.

Characteristics of penoplex series K

Penoplex Roof (K series) is used as a heat-insulating layer roofing cake or insulation for the attic floor. The density of the brand is 28-33 kg / cu. m, so the material does not significantly weigh down truss system.

The technical characteristics of Penoplex-Foundation of the F series are designed for warming the basement of the house and the foundation. Suitable as a heat-insulating material for septic tanks, where there is a risk of freezing of the body. Heaters of category F are used for refining garden paths on a sand-cement base.

Qualitative properties of Penoplex-Foundation

Penoplex-Comfort is designed for interior and exterior insulation work at home. It is considered universal and is in demand for thermal insulation of balconies, loggias, roofs and walls. The minimum water absorption makes it indispensable for warming "wet" rooms.

The density of the basis of Penoplex of the Comfort series is in the range of 25-35 kg / cu. m, and the remaining parameters correspond to a category 31C insulation.

Characteristics of Penoplex-Comfort

Features of installation in different areas of application

The specifics of working with penoplex depends on the purpose of the insulation and the upcoming conditions for its operation. Compliance with the scheme and technology for placing the heat-insulating layer helps to maximize the properties of extruded polystyrene foam.

The technology of insulating the walls of the house from the inside

In itself, the insulation of walls from the inside of the room is an undesirable process, which should be resorted to only if thermal insulation from the side of the facade is impossible. Internal installation insulation has significant disadvantages:

  • the point of accumulation of condensate is shifted to the side into the thickness of the wall, and high humidity leads to its destruction;
  • the usable area of the room is reduced;
  • load-bearing structures remain unprotected from exposure to cold air.

Important! Penoplex is the best option for warming the room from the inside. Mineral wool has a high level of water absorption, and the foam is a fragile material that is crushed under mechanical stress.

The negative impact of condensate on the wall

Thermal insulation algorithm from the inside:

  1. Prepare the base:
    • remove the old finish;
    • putty cracks, clean from dirt and dust;
    • treat the surface with a primer.
  2. Cut out the foam and prepare the adhesive solution.
  3. Apply glue to the wall and insulation boards.
  4. Glue the penoplex to the wall, check the evenness of the adjoining sheets in the places of door and window openings.
  5. Additionally fix the material with plastic dowels.
  6. Plaster the walls.

When working, you need to consider:

  • optimum thickness penoplex for wall insulation from the inside - 3-5 cm;
  • it is necessary to ensure normal air circulation in the room - install wall valves or a supply and exhaust unit.

"Running" of the insulation with a spiked roller

How to properly insulate a building from the outside

The technology for installing extruded polystyrene foam boards on the outside of the house is similar to the process described above. However, there are some nuances:

  1. The recommended foam thickness, according to the norms of SNiP 23-02-2003, is at least 12.4 cm.
  2. To increase the adhesion of the insulation to the surface of the wall, the plates must first be “run in” with a spiked roller.
  3. Penoplex installation is carried out after the installation of window sills, ebbs and slopes.
  4. The support for the insulation is the base profile, which is selected in accordance with the thickness of the material.
  5. Sheathing is carried out with tile moisture-resistant adhesive, for example, Ceresit CT-83.
  6. The final fastening with dowel-umbrellas is made after the glue has hardened - after 3 days.
  7. The joints between the sheets must be foamed.
  8. When using two layers of insulation, the layout of the plates is performed in a checkerboard pattern.
  9. A reinforcing mesh is glued to the fixed insulation, and a leveling layer and a finish are glued on top.

Video: using penoplex for wall insulation outside

Thermal insulation of the floor in different rooms

The technology of floor insulation depends on its basis. Thermal insulation of the floor on the ground is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Cover the soil base with gravel 40 mm thick.
  2. Lay a sand cushion 10 cm.
  3. Thoroughly tamp the base.
  4. Expand the foam, isolating the seams with metallic tape.
  5. Lay the waterproofing membrane, fasten the joints with adhesive tape.
  6. Place reinforcing composite or galvanized mesh.
  7. Set beacons for screed and pour cement-sand mortar.
  8. After the screed has dried, cover the floor with a finish.

The scheme of floor insulation on the ground

Warming of the concrete floor is carried out in several stages:

  1. Inspect floor slabs for damage.
  2. Align the base, removing cracks, recesses, protrusions and dust the surface.
  3. On the first floor, cover the floor with a waterproofing film, and on the second floor and above - foam plastic is laid directly on concrete.
  4. “Put” the insulation on the glue, placing the sheets with an offset so that the seams do not match.
  5. Lay a waterproofing film and fill the floor with a self-levelling compound.
  6. Apply a clean finish.

concrete floor insulation

Laying a floor with water heating involves placing the layers in the following sequence:

  1. Fill the reinforced concrete floor with a leveling screed.
  2. Lay foam sheets and cover them with polyethylene, seal the joints.
  3. Place reinforcing mesh over the entire area of the room.
  4. Arrange the heating elements in a spiral and fill them with a heat-resistant screed.
  5. cover the floor finishing- tiles or laminate.

Laying pipes when installing underfloor heating

Knowing the purpose, load and operating conditions of the penoplex, it will not be difficult to choose the right insulation. It is quite possible to do the installation of penoplex with your own hands, with the exception of high-rise facade work - in this case it is better to resort to the help of building climbers.

Extruded polystyrene foam (penoplex) has established itself as a good and convenient heat-insulating material. However, before starting construction works with penoplex, you need to find out how much material is required. This thermal insulation material is produced in plates of various sizes and thicknesses. To make an accurate calculation of the amount of penoplex, you need to know the dimensions and thickness of these plates. Below are the dimensions of different types of extruded polystyrene foam boards.

Penoplex is used as a building heat-insulating material. To make it comfortable to live in the house in any weather, so that even in winter you can go out on the loggia without warm clothes, you need high-quality insulation of walls, floors, ceilings. Today, many new heaters have appeared that protect house structures from heat loss. And among them stands out penoplex. Why has it become so popular in the industrial and domestic use What are its advantages and where is it used?

Reasons for popularity

Penoplex insulation has now become very popular in the insulation of buildings. They protect everything - from foundations to ceilings on balconies.

This is due to the fact that the material attracts with its most important properties:

  • Working with it does not require special skills and knowledge,
  • It is inexpensive, and insulation is economical in price.

The main reason for the popularity of expanded polystyrene is that it is cheap, but at the same time its thermal qualities are at a high level.

What is penoplex

Penoplex insulation is an extruded polystyrene foam. In its structure, foam plastic - be it 31, 45. 31 - resembles the well-known foam plastic, but it has slightly different characteristics due to the peculiarities of production.

During production, polystyrene foam granules are foamed with freon or carbon dioxide. This allows you to get a material that is absolutely harmless to health, hypoallergenic and has a number of advantages over polystyrene foam and other heaters.

Penoplex is produced in the form of plates. Technical characteristics of foam insulation are considered one of the most optimal for building protection. The dimensions of the plates are standard, but they can be cut.

Material Properties

Penoplex does not contain any biological substances. Therefore, it never decomposes or rots. For at least the foreseeable future, the material will decompose under the action of environment and microorganisms cannot - manufacturers claim that its service life reaches 50 years or more.

The material has a very low thermal conductivity of 0.03 W / m ºK, so it is a universal insulation.

Penoplex is currently used for:

  • building insulation,
  • road insulation,
  • runway insulation.

The high degree of resistance of penoplex to decay and chemical modification makes it possible to widely use it as a heater

Specifications

  • Significant flexural and compressive strength,
  • Its water absorption is 0.2-0.3%,
  • The vapor permeability of the material is 0.007-0.008 mg / m h Pa,
  • Temperature resistance - the insulation retains its characteristics and properties at temperatures from -50 to + 75 degrees.

Types of foam

At the moment, several types of penoplex are produced, each of which has its own areas of application. Although this is a fairly versatile material, it is still better to follow the recommendations of the manufacturers and use it for certain types of work. different types penoplex.

At the moment, several types of penoplex are produced, each of which has its own areas of application.

Penoplex is of the following types:

  • Penoplex Wall has a density of 25-32 kg / cu. m. and serves to insulate walls and partitions of buildings, basement floors.
  • Penoplex Foundation has a density of 29-32 kg / cu. m. and serves to protect foundations from freezing, basements, basement floors. The water absorption of this type of material is almost 0.
  • Penoplex roof has a density of 28-33 kg/cu.m. It is characterized by exceptional lightness, moisture resistance and rigid construction. Therefore, it is more convenient for them to insulate roofs of any kind.
  • Penoplex insulation 31 perfect for insulating walls, ceilings, floors. It is widely used for warming loggias and balconies, as well as for protecting a number of roofs that are not in use - that is, they are not loaded with anything other than snow during precipitation.
  • Insulation 35 is intended for floor insulation and is especially often used to create warm floors.
  • Insulation foam 45 has a density of 35-47 kg / cu. m. and has a number of special characteristics that allow it to be a universal material. Its compressive strength reaches 10% and is equal to 0.5 MPa. Its water absorption is such that even when completely immersed in water, the insulation 45 is practically not impregnated with water.
