DIY armchair photo

Every day, designers come up with unusual furniture, sometimes practical, and sometimes not so much. It looks beautiful, but not everyone can afford it. Round egg chairs have been invented for a long time, but they still have not gone out of fashion due to their interesting appearance, practicality and convenience. Let's try to create such an unusual chair with our own hands.

Let's start with a little round armchair suitable for a child or pet. If you are confident in your skills, you can immediately make a large egg chair that can fit an adult.

Materials:

  • big fitness ball
  • newspapers
  • plastic pipe
  • threaded stud with a diameter of 16 mm
  • a few nuts for a stud
  • cap nut
  • putty
  • sandpaper
  • 6 cans of white matte paint
  • 2 cans of white epoxy paint
  • foam rubber 4 cm thick
  • red cloth
  • 1 spray glue
  • roulette

How to make a round chair with your own hands

Papier mache

1. Take a large fitness ball. It is advisable to take an unnecessary ball, since after the project it will have to be thrown away.

2. Apply tape around the ball to define the borders of the papier-mâché. Adhesive tape needs to be glued, slightly shifted from the line of the central section.

3. Tear strips from newspapers. The width of the strips is about 4 cm. The strips do not have to be the same, even and neat. The main thing is not to make them too wide so that they do not wrinkle when pasting.

4. Prepare a papier-mâché paste. Mix two cups of water with a glass of flour and add a pinch of salt. Salt is needed to prevent mold from appearing in flour. The consistency of the paste should resemble yogurt. Do not make a lot of paste at once, it needs to be prepared as you use it.

5. Put the fitness ball in a large bowl so it doesn't roll around the room while you stick paper on it.

6. Apply paste on both sides of each strip, stick them on the ball parallel to each other. On top of them, glue another layer of strips perpendicular to the first.

7. When you cover the entire ball (up to the adhesive tape) with two layers of paper strips, let it dry for 12 hours. Repeat step 6 at least five times (if the seat is for an animal). Ideally, you need to apply at least 10 double layers of papier-mâché. After each layer, you need to leave the product to dry for 12 hours.

Egg chair base

1. Cut out a circle from MDF. The diameter of the base depends on the size of the chair. We sawed a circle with a diameter of 40 cm.

2. Drill a hole in the center of the circle. The hole diameter must match the size of the nut. Insert the nut into the hole and screw the threaded rod into it.

3. Install on the base plastic pipe. By changing the length of the pipe, you can adjust the height of the chair.

4. Using tape and newspapers, make a smooth transition from the base to the pipe.

5. Paste the resulting papier-mâché shape.

putty

The chair is taking shape. On the this stage you may be tempted to pull the ball out to see the result, but you should never do this. First you need to apply putty to the surface.

1. Put on gloves and evenly apply putty to the surface of the chair and legs. The layer thickness should be approximately 5 mm. Let the putty dry for a day.

2. Pull out the ball. To do this, you will have to blow it off. Now you can apply putty to the inner surface. The inner layer can be much thicker than the outer one. Do not worry if the putty on the outside starts to crack. Leave the chair to dry overnight.

Grinding

1. Start sanding with coarse sandpaper. The inner surface does not need to be sanded, as it will not be visible under the upholstery. During grinding, voids may open, do not pay attention to them, your task is to achieve the correct smooth shape. You will fill in the gaps later.

2. Fill the voids with putty, let it dry.

3. Sand the surface of the chair and legs with fine sandpaper.

Painting

1. Paint the chair white. It is advisable to use matte paint in spray cans. Apply as many words of paint as you see fit.

2. Paint must dry for 24 hours.

3. Apply epoxy paint. It will fix the white paint, give the product a gloss.

4. Let the paint dry.

Leg mounting

1. Drill a through hole in the chair where you want to install the leg. The hole diameter must match the diameter of the threaded rod.

2. Install the base with the threaded stud on the chair, mark where the stud needs to be sawn off.

3. Saw off the hairpin to the desired size. Attach the leg to the chair.

Foam rubber installation

1. Take a tape measure and measure the circumference of the "opening" of the chair. Divide the resulting length by 5. On the foam rubber strip, set aside the resulting length five times. Build five isosceles triangles from the given points. The height of the triangles is 1 meter.

2. Cut out the triangles and lay them out inside the chair. Their tops must touch. Between the triangles, gaps are formed in the form of petals. Take a sheet of paper and transfer the outline of a gap to it.

3. According to the template, cut out five “petals” from foam rubber.

4. Sew the "petals" to the triangles, in the end you will get a spherical foam upholstery.

5. Although it sounds strange, this blank needs to be cut into five parts. The cuts should go along the axes of the "petals".

Upholstery

1. Lay out the five foam blanks obtained in the previous step on a bright fabric. Outline them along the contour, then mark the outer contours, leaving 5 centimeters of margin. Cut the fabric along the markings.

2. Make sure the foam is laid out correctly. The seams on the foam rubber should be on the reverse side.

3. Apply glue to the edge of the foam rubber and glue the fabric upholstery.

4. Apply glue to the top half of the foam and stick the fabric. Glue the remaining part, attach and smooth the upholstery. Glue must be applied not to the fabric, but to the foam rubber, otherwise white spots will remain on the upholstery.

5. Turn the blanks over with the foam up. Apply glue to the seam allowances and wrap the fabric. Try to keep the edges straight and without wrinkles.

fabric frill

1. Apply glue to the inside of the chair. Lay the foam blanks, starting from the bottom.

2. Measure the circumference of the chair opening. Cut the rope to the appropriate length.

3. Cut a strip of fabric and wrap it around the rope as tightly as possible.

4. Sew the edges of the fabric strip.

5. Trim excess fabric. Glue the frill along the perimeter of the opening so that the seam is not visible.

Transportability As a rule, wooden chairs are used for relaxing on fresh air, open air. In the event of a sudden change in weather conditions, it is convenient to move the chair under a canopy if it is transportable.
Selection of quality raw materials One of the important conditions in the manufacture of chairs on their own, plays the role of hardwood. Despite the high pricing policy, the result of the design due to quality material, will be excellent. These species include: aspen, oak, pine, cedar.
Maximum weather protection A long stay of the chair in direct sunlight, heavy rain, leads to a deterioration in the external condition. Preparation for the protection of the finished chair begins at the earliest stages of design. High-quality, dry lumber is the key to success. If you bought initially low-quality raw materials, dry the boards in the process. Sand, soak the blanks with an antiseptic agent, apply hot drying oil. Parts that make up a garden chair.

The process of making a chair with your own hands: step by step instructions

Creating Basic Parts

As a rule, work begins with a preliminary stage- preparation of the main elements. The presence of a drawing with detailed tips will facilitate the further process of making a wooden chair with your own hands.

The scheme of creating a garden chair with your own hands.

The most complex, time-consuming process is the manufacture of the side supports of the seat. It is necessary to make a full-size side support template on cardboard.

Drawing of the side support of a garden chair.

1) We draw the first side of the part, raising the segment on the left, then the next two at the appropriate angle.

2) We mark the perpendicular segment, heading to point A.

3) We mark point C, draw a cutout under the transverse screed.

4) We extend the lower side with a line, marking an angle of 75 degrees, with top C.

5) We outline the arc, measuring the angle at point D. The radius of the arc is 116 mm. We connect the points with a line segment.

6) Using a square grid, we draw roundings between points A and B.

7) The resulting template is placed on wooden board. We trace the details along the contour, we are preparing for cutting.

For cutting straight sections, you need to use a saw, for cutting curly sections, a jigsaw is perfect.

Detail drawings of a garden chair.

IMPORTANT! In order for the cedar board to chip less, the cutting blade of the tool must be carried out in the direction of the fibers!

After transferring the finished drawing to the board, we will mark a similar one, according to the first scheme, using the already cut part.

If there is no ready-made pattern of armrests available - it does not matter! The circumference is not important.

1) It is necessary to make wedge-shaped supports for the armrests using a saw, beveling 6 degrees of the upper edges.

For the convenience of connecting parts, use a clamp.

2) Carefully screw the supports to the front legs. For fastening we use glue and screws.

3) We cut out the armrests, the rear support.

4) Using sandpaper, we clean the ends of the finished part.

5) Cut off the ends of the support.

6) We press the back support part to the back.

7) We mill the edges of the surfaces.

Attaching the armrests to the wedge-shaped support.

IMPORTANT! Glue plays an important role in the manufacture of a garden chair with your own hands. Heat-resistant glue for wood, unlike the common and commonly used PVA glue, will not lose its properties under the influence of high temperatures, moisture, does not dry out and will not crumble. For this reason, to create wooden product, we recommend using a heat-resistant adhesive.

Assembly of parts

Before assembly, it is necessary to carefully cover each of the parts with a triple layer of antiseptic to preserve the internal surfaces. After processing the material, you can proceed to the next steps.

  1. We align the finished parts, having previously outlined the drilling points.

    We cut out the details exactly along the marked contour.

  2. We make holes for the bolts andneatly fasten the details.

    Please note that the strength of the seat will depend on the location of the boards.

  3. We install the back leg perpendicular to the bevel of the support (like the first one, we assemble the second side of the frame), withwe connect the side parts of the wooden chair with the lower cross member of the backrest and the first seat bar.

    The ends of the slats and the opposite ends of the legs must match, which will indicate the correct position of the back.

  4. Installing supports. We fix the supports with clamps.

    In this case, the joint will turn out to be dense, which is what we need.

  5. We fix the upper backrest guide with screws, trying to align it with the lower crossbar. We draw a line on all the transverse boards, as well as on the bar of the back of the chair, then we drill a pilot hole, holding the bar.

    After we fix the top with slats and evenly fix all the slats in turn.

  6. We draw a radius of curvature, cutting the strips according to the markup.

    Having chosen the correct width of the final rail, we put it in place of the seat.

  7. We carefully grind the edges, the upper surfaces of the backrest, seats. We close the screws with wooden plugs and grind. Using hot drying oil or oil impregnation, we process the finished wooden chair.

Drying and varnishing of the product is the final stage of production.

Making wooden furniture for the garden with your own hands

Decor is one of the important components. With the help of unnecessary things, pillows, bright patches, vine branches and hard work, phenomenal results can be achieved.

As you can see, making a garden wooden chair with armrests with your own hands is not at all difficult.

Fantasy, imagination, a positive charge, basic knowledge, diagrams and drawings - this is the whole list of necessary components for creating a wooden chair with your own hands. Desire and a little work - that's the key to success!

A handmade wooden chair will last for many years.

Retaining its original appearance, such a chair will perfectly "fit" into the natural atmosphere and allow you to enjoy a comfortable stay.

It is true what they say that the Internet is a storehouse of useful information. People share valuable knowledge here and original ideas opening up new perspectives for each other.

A person without experience and skills receives unique opportunity arrange for yourself furniture manufacturing at home. There are many detailed master classes with ready-made schemes that will help you make any furniture, whether you have the necessary tools for this and a penchant for crafts.

Of course, you should start with simple projects, like the one presented in this master class. Known in narrow circles, the craftswoman Anna White has prepared for everyone detailed instructions, which talks about how to make a simple armchair from boards for your home or terrace with your own hands.

AT ready-made it is completed with stylish pillows. You can also make them yourself. Briefly, Anna will tell us about this.

In this project, you can use the simplest lumber that does not require processing on milling machine and manufacturing complex grooved joints.

Gather materials and prepare everything you need before you start work. You will need:

Materials:
1. Pine board 50mm thick:
- 4 pieces x 50 x 100 x 550 mm - leg details;
- 2 pieces x 50 x 100 x 810 mm - details of the armrests;
- 6 pcs x 50 x 150 x 710 mm - sidewall trim parts;
- 2 pieces x 30 x 30 x 710 mm - slats for seat parts;
- 4 pieces x 50 x 150 x 620 mm - back details and lower front panel detail;
- 2 pieces x 50 x 100 x 620 mm - the upper part of the back and the upper part of the front panel;
- 5 pieces x 50 x 100 x 620 mm - seat details.
2. glue for woodworking;
3. furniture screws;
4. stain or protective and decorative oil for wood processing and its toning;
5. furniture varnish with a transparent coating or varnish toner.

Instruments:

- circular saw or miter saw for sawing boards;
- grinder;
- electric drill;
- screwdriver;
- paint brushes;
- soft fabric lint free for oil;
- construction tape measure and square;
- pencil.

Step one: detailing and marking parts

Determining the final dimensions of the chair, the author proceeded from the dimensions of the seat and pillows for it. The seat is a flat square with sides of 620 mm. If you want to change the dimensions of the chair, all dimensions indicated in the master class will have to be recalculated.

Otherwise, use these wonderful detailed diagrams and write down on paper all the details that you will need to work. Specify the exact size of each part. You can find a list of them in the list of materials for this master class.

Before you get started, make sure all your boards are planed to the same thickness, otherwise the finished chair will look like a typical piece of handicraft. Such processing of boards is carried out on a surface gage. In extreme cases, you can order it in the workshop, but it is better to initially select lumber that has been properly processed.

Mark out the details of the chair using a pencil and a square. Square - especially useful tool if you plan to cut the boards by hand with a hacksaw.

Step two: making parts from boards

You will need thick boards 50 mm thick, but of different widths: 100 and 150 mm. In addition, prepare a rail no narrower than 30 mm for the manufacture of base parts for the seat.

Cut the board into pieces of the required length using a miter saw or hand saw. Both of these tools allow you to make perfectly even cuts, which is very important in the manufacture of furniture.

If you're using a hand saw for wood, be prepared to trim the cuts by hand for neat, tight joints.

Sand all the details in any way convenient for you. For example, an electric grinder. For grinding pine, a piece of bar with sandpaper fixed to it will fit. True, such work will take much more time.

Step three: assembling a wooden chair

Attach the trim pieces to the legs with a gap of approximately 20 mm. Pre-drill holes in the places where the screws are to be screwed in so that the boards do not split.

If you want the chair to serve you for a long time, use glue. In this case, apply some woodworking glue to the joint, press the pieces together and screw in the screw or self-tapping screw.

On each of the side panels, fix the armrest and connect the sides to each other with the upper part of the backrest. Please note that on the inside of the chair, all the trim parts are flush with the frame, and along the outer contour they are somewhat recessed inward.

Pass your work rail through the gap between the side paneling, place the upper back piece in place and secure with screws. Screw on the rest of the backrest.

On the front panel, fasten a wide board at the bottom, and a 100 mm narrow board at the top. Sew up the seat and, to complete the assembly, secure the top piece of the backrest by placing it flat.

Try to drive the screws in the same vertical line to keep the job looking neat.

After some time, when the chairs have already been tested in everyday life, the author advises to fasten the details of the seat in such a way that it itself is located slightly at an angle. This will make sitting much more comfortable. The same can be said about the back of the chair.

Step four: wood processing

It is convenient in that it makes it easy to apply the composition and repeat this procedure at any time in order to refresh the product. At the same time, all preparation of the surface for re-painting is reduced to its easy grinding by hand with sandpaper.

You can also use alcohol stain in combination with several coats of furniture varnish or, say, natural drying oil.

Apply the stain with a brush along the fibers and try not to touch the areas already stained once again, otherwise the tone will be uneven.

A good alternative is also a decorative toner oil, which not only imitates valuable wood species, but also protects the wood from rot, mold and fungus, as well as from moisture.

You can lacquer the chair with matte furniture varnish in order to prolong its life. Do not use water-based varnishes, as they do not have a sufficient level of strength and wear off quickly.

Apply the varnish in several layers, sanding each previous layer as soon as it hardens. Use fine-grained sandpaper for this, and do the grinding itself carefully, without much pressure. Finishing layer varnish does not need to be sanded.

Step five: final touch

Such simple furniture like this wooden armchair, it needs beautiful textiles. The author used ready-made furniture cushions with floral ornaments.

However, pillows can be made with your own hands. To do this, you will need foam rubber (preferably furniture, increased strength), batting or thin foam rubber to give the pillows shape and extra volume, as well as strong threads, a suitable fabric and a sewing machine.

Cut the thick foam rubber into pieces of the size you need. In this case, on squares with sides of 600 mm. Wrap them in one or two layers of thin foam rubber or batting. Attach the fabric and determine on the spot how much you need to sew the covers.

You can also make covers in advance according to the pattern and, based on their size and shape, prepare the filler.

If you plan to wash the covers and keep your pillows clean, sew the covers out of a plain thick fabric and make a detachable set with zippers that you can always remove and wash in the machine.

How to make a chair with your own hands from wood: drawings and dimensions, plus assembly instructions and explanations for working with lumber

For a comfortable stay in the country you need a comfortable chair. However, the same furniture is needed in the apartment. A good chair is not difficult to buy, however, it will cost a lot, but you can save money and assemble it yourself from wood. In this article you will find simple instructions for making a wooden chair, and in addition, you will learn the rules for working with lumber.

Wood as the main material

Decided to make a chair and do not know what materials to use for this? best material- this is a tree, namely, boards, timber, furniture board and other solid wood lumber. There are several reasons for assembling wood furniture and among them:

  • Ease of wood processing. Working with wood is easier than with other materials from which it is customary to make furniture. Again, for woodworking, the tools found in most home workshops will suffice;
  • Affordable price. Boards, timber and other lumber are still inexpensive, considering how many of them will be needed to make one chair. Moreover, lumber can not be bought new, because there are used pallets;
  • A great appearance wooden furniture . The texture of the wood has a beautiful pattern of fibers, which of course will decorate the chair you have assembled, provided that you cover it clear varnish;
  • Durability. Solid wood furniture is superior in terms of reliability to furniture assembled from plywood or particle boards. With proper maintenance, a chair made of wood will last at least ten years.

What type of wood do you prefer? To assemble furniture, I recommend lumber from wood hardwood: aspens, lindens, birches and fruit trees. Coniferous wood is knotty and resinous, which will complicate the cutting of materials and the finishing of the finished product.

Model selection

Now that you know what materials to make a chair from, it remains to decide on suitable model. I offer a brief overview of popular options.

Ordinary chairs with armrests- in fact, these are chairs, but more massive and more comfortable

from pallets. This is the best way in terms of ease of assembly and low cost of materials. Again, with a competent approach to the assembly process finished goods will look modern and stylish.

Shell. Despite the complexity of the design, this chair looks great and provides the greatest comfort in comparison with other models. The only drawback of this option is the need to bend a lot of wooden parts.

From the bay from the electric cable. Bay from under the cable with a back made of edged board- this is furniture that is not only cheap, but also quickly manufactured. Making such a chair will be even easier than from pallets. In addition, from the bay, thanks to its rounded sidewalls, you can make a rocking chair.

A set of standard self-taught furniture maker questions

Before proceeding with the manufacture of the chair, I will comment on the questions that are most often asked by self-taught furniture makers.

What to cut? For longitudinal cutting we use circular saw, for a transverse and curvilinear cut, we use an electric jigsaw or a hacksaw.

What to fasten wooden details? In the design of the chairs there are heavily and lightly loaded connections. For heavily loaded connections, we use bolts with washers and nuts. For lightly loaded connections, we use wooden dowels or furniture confirmations.

Paint or varnish? The choice of coatings depends on the quality of the lumber. If the wood has no visible defects, it can be stained with a stain and covered with a clear varnish. If there are pigment spots on the surface or it was necessary to eliminate defects with putty, it is preferable to cover the part with primer and a continuous layer of paint.

How to reduce paint consumption? We noticed that at finishing armchairs paints and varnishes are absorbed into the surface and unpainted places remain? The problem is that lumber has a porous structure and in order to reduce its absorbency, it will be necessary to first apply a primer or drying oil.

Why do cracks appear? Often, novice craftsmen, having made furniture from wood, eventually discover the appearance of cracks. The reason for the cracking of lumber is uneven shrinkage. The solution to the problem is the use of initially dry wood.

Preparation for work

At the preparatory stage, we select a suitable drawing, prepare materials and prepare a tool.

As materials, I propose to use not new purchased boards, but wooden pallets. One dacha chair will take one and a half pallets. Considering that used pallets are sold for about 300 rubles, the price assembled furniture will be low.

Now let's select a drawing. The diagram shows dimensions oriented to the structure of a person of average height. If this is necessary, the dimensions can be revised upwards or downwards.

This drawing shows several projections of the chair, namely the top, front and side views. It also shows the location of the fastening hardware, which provide a reliable connection.

The process of making a chair with your own hands: step by step instructions

I offer step by step assembly instructions. To make it easier to repeat the steps listed, the instruction is framed in the form of a photo report. The steps are listed in the order in which they must be completed.
