Installation of sliding interior doors and do-it-yourself installation. Do-it-yourself sliding interior doors We install a sliding door with our own hands

In small rooms, every meter of usable area counts. That is why many homeowners are replacing swing doors with sliding ones. Installing sliding doors with your own hands is quite simple. However, the mechanism for such a design costs almost as much as the canvas. Such expenses are justified if it takes up too much space, in other cases it is better to install a swing model.

Sliding compartment doors have very low sound insulation, as they do not fit snugly against the wall. Much better hide the noise of the structure, installed in the pencil case. However, they do not reach the soundproofing of the swing door.

Types of sliding doors

Retractable structures differ in the type of movable mechanism. On this basis, they are divided into rail and suspended. Each model has its pros and cons.

Hanging type model on the top rail

The suspension mechanism consists of a square profile with a groove inside which there are two curved bars. The rollers attached to the product ride along these slats. The guide is made of metal, like the rollers. But they have rubber or plastic pads that provide a soft and quiet ride.

When mounting a sliding interior door on a rail, no fixtures and mechanisms are installed on the floor. All fasteners that are on the canvas are two rollers on top. They move along the groove due to special wheels. Such doors are considered one of the easiest to install. Installing a sliding door includes the following steps:

  • installation of a profile rail;
  • installation of rollers to the top of the door;
  • inserting the product into the groove of the rail;
  • installation of valves to limit the movement of rails;
  • inserting the lower roller into the groove and installing the door;
  • mounting decorative overlay for accessories.

The door fastener itself is very simple, in addition to the rollers themselves and the rails, the kit includes plugs and fasteners. The product with the top rail has extremely low sound insulation performance. Therefore, it is not recommended to use such structures in living rooms.

Sliding rail structures

On the sliding doors two mounting rails. Movable rollers are mounted from above and below. This method of fastening makes the product very stable, so it can be shaken.

Note! Dust and debris are constantly clogged into the metal profile of the fastener, which complicates cleaning in the house.

Mounting options

Regardless of the type of fasteners, the installation of sliding interior doors can be:

  • Kupeynaya. The rollers are installed above the door leaf in the opening. The guides must fit snugly into the groove.
  • Cassette. This option is considered the most time-consuming and costly. For the product, a niche is equipped in the wall in which the guide is located. When opening, the canvas is pushed into the wall. Such designs most effectively save space.
  • Cascading. Similar designs are very popular in Asian countries. The model consists of 2-3 canvases. One is motionless, while the others ride on the rails and clean up behind it.

If you plan to install sliding doors with your own hands - choose a compartment design. Models have easy assembly and high maintainability. The main feature that is necessary for the installation of an interior door with your own hands is a smooth opening.

You can’t put anything near the wall to which the base of the sliding door is retracted, otherwise the movement of the canvas will be disturbed. A significant disadvantage of the models is their low sound insulation. This is due to the fact that sliding doors are installed with a gap. Without it, the canvas will scratch against the wall.

Cassette structures provide the best access to the space of the room. Inside the niche can be installed soundproofing materials, which will hide the noise. However, the installation of such a model is possible only at the stage of repair or construction. In addition, a decorative wall is assembled for the rail, and this deprives the rooms of useful space.

Cascading products are a modification of compartment structures. The main difference is the greater number of guide rails. Installing such products is the most difficult, as it requires high accuracy. Cascading structures are categorized as premium for their complexity and aesthetics.

Installation Features

You can install sliding interior doors with your own hands even in the absence of specific skills. Installation instructions are included with each product. Following it, you can do all the work yourself. Below, the assembly process is described in more detail than in the standard instructions.

Do-it-yourself sliding door installation

The opening, regardless of the fastener design, the place for the structure must comply with the following characteristics:

  • Smooth surface of all planes. The walls of the opening should not have serious drops and flaws.
  • High bearing capacity.
  • Both the walls and the opening must be pre-finished with a leveling compound and a decorative coating.

After leveling the opening, you can proceed with the installation. The first step is to attach the rollers. Depending on the manufacturer and model, fasteners may have their own characteristics. To assemble some products, you need to step back 15-20 cm from the edge, but most often the rollers are mounted right at the edge.

To begin with, markings are made on the canvas for fasteners.

Important! Make sure that the distance from the edge to the roller is the same on both sides.

At the marking site with a drill, holes are drilled 1 mm smaller than the diameter of the fastener. After the grooves are ready, fix the plates. Self-tapping screws are used as fasteners, their length must be at least 75 mm. The greater the weight of the canvas - the longer the fasteners. Special support holders are mounted in the plates, into which the rollers are inserted. On the sides of the canvas, fasteners must be fixed with plugs.

Pins are included with the rollers. The movable elements themselves are wound on them. If the model is not equipped with handles, they are purchased separately. It is recommended to mount the handles before installing the product in the opening. In a model without a groove, markup is made with a pencil and a carpentry tool removes material along the contour. Fittings are attached to the hole formed.

Note! For sliding doors, only immersion fittings are suitable.

When the canvas is ready, the rail is fixed. The easiest way is to screw the guide to the bar, and not directly into the opening. To do this, take a wooden plank of square or rectangular section with a side of 60 cm or more. The length of the bar should be twice the length of the door itself and a margin of 5-10 cm. A rail is cut along the length of the bar.

The guide is screwed to the bar with self-tapping screws from 85 mm. The minimum number of fasteners is 4, the more often the better. The recommended step between the screws is 10 cm, the same distance is made from the edge of the canvas to the first fastener.

Next, you need to measure the height of the bar. The rail is strung on the canvas rollers and the height is measured. According to this value, holes are made on the wall for mounting the guide rail. The canvas should not stand on the floor. From the floor to the structure itself, a distance of 8-10 mm is left. If there are no coatings on the floor, the thickness of the floor finish is added to the value.

The level adjusts the mark for mounting the bar. For this, fasteners from 12 cm are used, but anchor bolts are more reliable fasteners. AT concrete walls dowels are used.

The marking under the guide is made with a thin drill or a nail. After that, holes are drilled for dowels or self-tapping screws and the timber is mounted. The final stage is the insertion of the sliding doors into the rail. After rolling up the structure, plugs are placed on the sides of the fittings, they protect the structure from slipping.

In the open state of the door, a flag roller is screwed onto the floor. It regulates the movement of the web along the vertical axis.

To give the structure an aesthetic appearance will allow the installation of a decorative overlay on the mounting profile. It is placed on finishing nails or self-tapping screws with decorative caps. Screw the overlay directly into the bar.

To install a sliding structure, more materials and tools will be required. If you want to learn how to install sliding cassette doors, watch the detailed video instruction:

Almost any canvas can be attached to a rail, and designed sliding door. But in order for the system to function without failures, it is necessary to install high-quality fittings. Durable fasteners and rollers ensure a long service life of the door. Therefore, saving on accessories is not worth it.

The canvas itself can be made independently. Most cheap option- a frame made of a bar with a body made of plywood or chipboard. The most aesthetically pleasing look in the interior is a solid product made of solid wood or glued wood. However, the assembly of such a product will cost more. Products from chipboard panels are pasted over with a film or a laminating surface. Wooden canvases can simply be sanded and coated with protective compounds.

It is very difficult to design a roller mechanism on your own. If you do not have a special tool, including cutters, then you will not be able to make accessories with your own hands. It is much easier and cheaper to buy a finished product.

Installing an interior compartment door is a task that can be completely solved even for a non-specialist. This article will focus on the types of sliding doors, their advantages and disadvantages, and, of course, how to install an interior compartment door on your own.

The purchase of interior doors is a responsible business, there are huge selection sliding structures that can fit into any interior.

According to the shape and method of fastening the guides, they are divided into the following types:

  • Straight and semicircular, which are used both for cabinets and for rooms. They can be quite original.
  • Compartment interior doors mounted in the upper part of the opening, on the ceiling, floor or wall. Such a variety of fixtures allows them to be used in almost any room.

You can buy any of the listed options. Installation without problems is done by hand, and the price will depend on the finishing materials and the complexity of the mobile mechanisms.

Attention: The use of compartment doors with lower guides is fraught with a violation of the aesthetics of the room and the occurrence of some inconvenience associated with the accumulation of dust and dirt in the rails. Because of this, after some time after the start of operation, the structure takes on an untidy appearance, to which the difficult movement of the rollers is added.

The use of compartment doors for arranging small apartments or studios, which require separation of zones, is difficult due to the violation of the integrity of the interior. In order to hide this shortcoming, it is recommended to mount the rail system flush with the floor.

To do this, you must first prepare a recess in it, into which the lower rails will be inserted.

To give the structure strength and stability, it is recommended to install a number of upper rails together with the lower guides. This requirement is mandatory if the owner decides to use not light chipboard sheets, but heavy doors made of wood and glass (see). The main load in this design is carried by the bottom row.

For mounting such heavy models, stronger and more durable rollers are provided. Often, for arranging the space, compartment doors with rollers are used only on the top panel.

Depending on the place of attachment, these partitions are divided into 2 categories:

  • Mounted, which are mounted along the ceiling or wall;
  • Suspended models, the panels of which are attached to the top of the doorway.

The first type of partitions is similar to curtains. The movement system of hinged compartment doors is hidden in decorative panels. Their flaw is the loose fit of the doors to the wall, which eliminates the soundproofing of the room.

Such a system of fastening partitions also does not allow furniture doors to be placed along the movement area, which reduces the possibility of interior arrangement.

Have more practicality suspended models compartment doors. Their use allows not only to divide the space into zones, but also to make a certain contribution to the decor of the room. Suspended structures fit snugly against the wall, and therefore have greater sound insulation.

Sliding models are a special kind of compartment doors. hallmark of such structures is that they do not move along the walls, but slide into them.

This happens due to the installation of a special cassette inside the wall. Sliding models compare favorably with their counterparts due to the possibility of the best organization of space. Their disadvantage is the high complexity and cost of the installation process.

Interior doors coupe video will also help you choose the right design option. Pay special attention to the mounting base and the wall, because the choice of the mechanism itself will depend on this.

Necessary materials for self-production of the structure

For self-designing compartment doors, you will need to purchase a minimum amount of materials. When creating a simple model at home, no more than 3-4 components are used.

Laminated chipboard used as doors.

Attention: When choosing a particular canvas, it is important to pay attention not only to the quality of the material itself, but also to its thickness. When constructing compartment doors independently, experts recommend using chipboard with a thickness of at least 16 mm.

  • This is due to the need to maintain a presentable appearance of the structure during its continuous operation. The use of thin sheets requires the installation of a fastening system similar to that used when modeling a glass door.
  • For this reason, experts recommend stopping at standard 16 mm thick chipboard sheets, which can be framed with aluminum profiles to protect against deformation when constantly colliding with an opening or another door.
Roller guide rail system

Their use makes it possible to design compartment doors that slide silently and easily along the walls. There are a huge number of roller systems on the market, designed for structures of any size and shape.

The use of this type of guide differs from similar systems in the principle of operation - the doors are fixed on a solid rail, and do not hang on it like standard models. The entire load in this case falls on the lower profile.

We select accessories

When designing compartment doors, mortise handles and, if necessary, a lock are used (see). In this case, fittings of non-standard shapes are used. So, the handles look like holders recessed into the surface of the door. At the same time, locks are equipped not with standard latches, but with hooks.
self-tapping screws

With the help of which guide systems are attached to the surface of the floor, walls or ceiling.

For the installation of compartment doors, in addition to the standard set of building materials and elements, tools are required, including: an electric jigsaw or a circular saw, screwdriver, milling cutter, serviceable building level and a set of screwdrivers, pliers, screwdrivers and a hammer.

Materials and tools required for installation

Preliminary measurements

Before buying everything you need for installation, carefully measure the doorway with a regular tape measure:

  • The canvas should be 5-6 centimeters wider and higher than the opening, if it is one.
  • If interior compartment doors are planned - the installation of two or more canvases, their total width is calculated based on whether they will move apart or go behind each other.

So, we have decided on the sizes.

What else is required for their installation and decoration:

  1. Door fittings and fasteners.

When buying ready-made sliding doors, fasteners and sliding elements are usually included in the delivery. These are metal guides, rollers, self-tapping screws, etc. They can also be purchased separately at any major building and finishing materials store.

  1. Wooden beam with a section of 50x50 mm.

This structural element is necessary if you install the doors with your own hands with the rail fastened to the wall. Its length should be twice the width door leaf. In the absence of a doorway and installation of doors up to the ceiling height, the rail can be attached directly to the ceiling.

  1. , dobory and platbands.

The box is a frame framing the doorway, to which the canvases of the closed door will adjoin. Dobors and platbands (see) are necessary for masking fasteners and decorative framing of the opening.

  1. Anchors for fastening the timber to the wall, as well as additional self-tapping screws, finishing nails.
  2. Tools: tape measure, level, plumb line, screwdriver, pencil, milling machine or a chisel.

Preparing to install compartment doors

About how to install compartment doors, a little later, but first you need to talk about preparatory work. At the stage of rough finishing of the premises, only the sliding systems themselves can be mounted, if it is planned that the door will “leave” when opened into a niche in the wall.

In all other cases, installation is carried out at the stage of finishing work. Before installation, make sure that the contour of the opening is correct. Its walls must be strictly vertical and parallel to each other. If this is not the case, try to correct the opening.

Attention! If the compartment door will be installed on an opening in a plasterboard partition, it is necessary to install a mortgage from a bar above it during its construction.

The order and features of the work

Now consider, below is the instruction on this issue. A strict requirement for the installation of compartment doors is their installation on a perfectly flat surface.

Regardless of the place of attachment of the structure, be it an opening or a closet, the first step is to check the floor or the bottom of the furniture using the building level for violations of the general line.

So:

  • Small deviations are acceptable, which will not interfere with the installation of compartment doors. Normal is a violation of the horizontal surface up to 5 mm. It is impossible to install the structure with deviations greater value. Therefore, it is important to avoid the presence of depressions and bulges on the floor. If necessary, such shortcomings should be eliminated.
  • Experts recommend doing everything construction works before direct installation of the compartment. It is necessary to sheathe the opening with wood or drywall in advance, treat it with putty, apply paint or stick wallpaper. Following this recommendation eliminates the risk of spoilage already installed doors these finishing materials.

The process of designing and installing compartment doors is a sequential process that should be considered point by point.

Assembly of the rail system

It is the most important stage of work, which includes several nuances.

So:

  • Before installing the frame for the compartment doors, it is necessary to make a markup in advance, along which the strips will be attached. It is important to maintain an exact parallel between the floor and ceiling rails. For this purpose, using the building level, clear lines are drawn along the entire perimeter of the opening.
  • After that, following the markup, guides are attached. To achieve greater aesthetics and structural strength, it is necessary to use guides of the same length.

Attention: It is important to cut the upper and lower strips exactly to millimeters. At the same time, one should not forget about the reliability of the frame, carefully fixing it with self-tapping screws.

Door assembly

After installing the guide system, they begin to manufacture doors for the structure. At this stage of work, certain difficulties may arise due to the small size of a standard apartment. But you can organize the manufacture of doors in a small room.

  • Before starting work, you need to decide on the size of the future product. So, having an opening with a width of 1800 mm, it is necessary to make 2 doors with a width of 900 mm. To these values it is also necessary to add 50 mm for overlapping one panel on another.
  • Having decided on the dimensions of the doors, they begin to trim the chipboard sheets. Before that, with the help of a pencil and a long ruler, lines are drawn on the panels, outlining the products of the desired dimensions. After drawing the contours with a saw or a jigsaw, cut out the doors along the lines.
  • Despite the accuracy of the master, chips often occur along the edges of the plates. This shortcoming must be covered by aluminum profiles.
  • Door trim is the next step. Its features depend on the type of fastening of aluminum profiles. So, some are connected to the doors using self-tapping screws, others are glued into a groove cut in the chipboard panel. Having little experience with a router, it is recommended to stop at the first option. To hide the screws, caps are used to match chipboard.
  • You can not do without the use of a milling cutter at the next stage of work - the installation of rollers. It is necessary to attach the roller to the bottom area of the panel at a distance of 100 mm from the edge and outline its contours. After that, a groove for placing a roller in it is cut out according to the outlines, which is firmly fastened with a self-tapping screw. In a similar way, fittings crash into the compartment door. A pen is applied to the selected area on the door, the contours are outlined with a pencil, along which a through hole is cut. Halves of the holders are installed in the passages and fastened with a screw.

Door installation

This stage is not difficult and consists in installing the panels on the rail system.

So:

  • The mounted doors alternately lead up the structure, then, lifting them, place them on the bottom rail. The stage of installation of the panels can be facilitated by using special rollers with snaps, with which, if necessary, they can be lowered before installing the doors in the structure or raised to engage the panels with the bottom bar.
  • After installing the doors on the guide system, it is necessary to adjust the movement system. The adjustment is carried out by rotating the mechanism along the displaced center.
  • The process of designing and installing compartment doors is not difficult. But for a person who does not have the skill to work with building materials and tools, it may seem impossible. In the presence of such doubts, it is recommended not to even start independent work on the manufacture of doors, but to entrust it to professionals.

Interior compartment doors will serve you faithfully for many years, the main thing is to choose the right installation mechanism in your version. Therefore, analyze everything before making a choice.

Anyone who sets out to assemble sliding doors with their own hands will need to study the technology of their manufacture. This design will make the interior more diverse and consider options for economical use of space.

Pros and cons of sliding systems

Ergonomically equipping the interior of the room with the help of sliding doors is not as difficult as it might seem. In the process of performing work, appropriate knowledge about the features of this design is needed. It should not only divide the space, but also visually preserve the integrity of the room.

Before mounting the structure, it is necessary to determine its strengths and weaknesses. This will help you make the final choice whether to install or not. If you pay attention to the advantages of the door, then it should perform the following functions:

  • save room space;
  • open with drafts, which distinguishes it from hinged products;
  • maintain simplicity and ease of opening the valves;
  • ensure the cleanliness of the roller profile;
  • make it possible to automate the action of the valves;
  • instead of thresholds, use lower guides built into the floor.

Among the disadvantages of the sliding design can be identified:

  • low level of sound and heat insulation;
  • high price of door fittings;
  • the inability to install large furniture or household appliances next to the product.

Seals are glued to the end of the canvas. Installation of a sliding glass structure can be carried out on the loggia, balcony, in country house, the walls of which are of sufficient length. Once you decide to install, there are some budgetary constraints to keep in mind.

Varieties of sliding devices

In general, the system includes the following elements:

  • roller mechanism;
  • top and bottom guides;
  • sash canvas.

After attaching the mechanism to the canvas, check that the rollers can move along the guides. The mechanism is set in motion with the help of decorative panels, fittings. The set includes platbands with extensions.

Products of the following types are produced:

  • "harmonic";
  • compartment doors;
  • cascading doors;
  • radius products.

Sliding systems require the use of special fittings. Before you make a sliding door with your own hands, you will need to purchase suitable locks and handles. They must differ from the standard elements mounted on hinged sashes.

If the handles of the structure are recessed into the canvas, this allows you to freely move the canvas moving to the side. Then it should return to the niche allotted for it. The design locks also differ from the constipation of conventional canvases, since the action of the mechanism is based on vertical snapping.

When purchasing a product with a roller mechanism, you should check the availability of accessories in the kit for the canvas. If you need to install a handle with a lock with your own hands, you should select them very carefully. You may need to consult with a specialist, as well as search for the desired items in the catalog.

Roller mechanism system

The name "sliding doors" is determined by the way they open, provided by the movement of the rollers along the guides. These elements should be selected based on the following parameters:

  • type of sliding product;
  • number of valves;
  • web material type.

Since the weight of different systems is different, this creates a certain degree of load. Therefore the choice roller system for single leaf type sliding doors should be limited to light mechanism.

Installing desired view sliding doors (cascade, accordion, coupe) it is important to consider how much the roller mechanism is used. When installing a cascade-type product, it is required to install 2 roller mechanisms for each individual blade. In this case, the installation of guides with 2 gutters is carried out. It is important to consider that the creation of sliding doors, including cascading ones, requires the presence of 1 chute in the guides for all canvases separately.

The strength of the leaves is determined by the roller mechanism for sliding doors and the guide. If a we are talking about the glass structure, it may be necessary to install 2 guides on the opening: at the top and at the bottom. Only this will ensure the reliability and stability of the door, which has a large mass of the leaf.

Ways to install sliding systems

Sliding systems are suitable for both small rooms, as well as for rooms with a large area. They allow you to zone the space, while maintaining its integrity. When the doors are closed, it turns into 2 rooms, and when open, it remains intact.

Another way to use the systems is the installation of sliding doors between the loggia and the living room, the terrace and the balcony of the cottage or country house. In this case, you can use sliding glass doors that let in a lot of light.

The most expensive are complex designs of radius doors. Often they are installed in showers or rooms that have rounded shapes. These designs on curvilinear guides have an original look.

Different types of sliding doors differ slightly from each other, but the rules for their installation remain common. Before installation, you will need to consider the following nuances:

  1. The evenness of the doorway, so that you do not have to take the canvas with a margin.
  2. High bearing capacity of the sides of the opening and the wall above it.

Before installation, it is necessary to fully prepare the opening: paint, wallpaper or decorate with decorative panels. Since the sliding system has its drawbacks, it is better not to mount hinged doors between the bathroom, toilet, kitchen or living room. The development of technology is associated with the emergence of new opportunities, so the horizons of use in the future should expand.

Hardware set

Since sliding systems have a unique structure, then the fittings for them must be appropriate. Sliding door locks resemble a bolt made in the form of a hook. When the key is turned in the lock, the bolt should move forward. The set includes handles made in the form of "shells". They should make a recess in the door leaf.

The main difference between the handles is that they are hidden in the canvas. This is provided so that the doors move to the side without problems. If we compare the locks of sliding structures with standard elements, then their main difference lies in the vertical latching.

You have to choose special fittings in cases where it is not included in a single set. The choice must be made carefully as door hardware is unique to each type of construction. For quality installation locks and handles, it is best to contact a specialist.

If you pay attention to additional fittings, then here you can include fasteners different type complete with door leaf. Make the installation of all elements will help step-by-step instruction for door installation. The presence of a brush seal in the kit allows you to provide protection and shielding.

Glass sliding doors

By choosing the type of sliding mechanism, you can purchase a kit, and then start installing the system. To install a door on rollers with your own hands, you can first familiarize yourself with the features of the device of the most common sliding single-leaf system. The description of the work execution technique should also include other main points characteristic of other types of such structures.

Installation of glass sliding system represents original solution for interior decoration or zoning. Aluminum is used as the edging. Glasses can be opaque, transparent, color. This option is quite expensive, but the money spent is worth it.

You should not purchase expensive structures if the apartment small size. Installing a massive glass door for such a room would not be the right solution. When buying, it is important to take into account the quality of the design, its components in the set, including mechanisms and accessories.

Before you make glass sliding doors yourself, you will need to take into account the differences in the method of fixing this design. The set of fasteners consists of 2 metal paws needed to clamp the glass. As a result, it is pulled together by paws with screws. Insofar as door glass have a large mass, then they are best installed with 2 guides:

  1. In the floor
  2. Above the doorway.

After mounting the rollers, the canvas can be put in place. To complete this stage of work, it is better to invite a partner. It will help to hold the product while tightening the bolts. The roller mechanism should be hidden behind a decorative strip, reinforced from above. In the process of performing work, it is important to ensure that the canvas is located strictly horizontally.

A more time-consuming task is the installation of sliding doors with glass sheets. In this case, it is necessary to make a partition from the GKL, where the door should enter. If you install canvases with a guide in the floor, you can hollow out a special groove with a perforator.

Fittings for glass sliding doors

Installation of sliding doors is completed with the installation of door fittings. There are 2 ways to strengthen it:

  1. The guides are fixed from below - on the floor, and also from above - on the ceiling or a wooden frame.
  2. The door glass leaf is suspended from above on guides.

The latter method is inexpensive, but it is less reliable. The presence of upper rollers on door fittings reduces the quality of the entire structure. If you purchase accessories of special quality, then it costs more than usual.

The glass of the structure is not only transparent, but also multi-colored. Transparent glasses that transmit rays are an additional light source. Glass thickness can be 8 mm or more. This increases strength and reliability.

Since glass is not fragile, it cannot be broken. This indicates the safety of the product, it cannot be injured. When opening, the glass sashes should move apart along each of the guides, and not turn like swing doors.

Interior decoration with glass doors can be done in different styles. The elegant design is an original design idea and is suitable for open-plan apartments.

Glass structures allow you to effectively divide the room into separate zones. At the same time, the entire living area is preserved, which distinguishes such products from swing doors. Glass sheets are ideal for bathrooms or kitchens, as they allow for airtight closing. This is achieved if the fittings for sliding doors are of high quality.

An excellent option for any apartment or house would be the installation of sliding interior doors. They can replace conventional swing doors and save space. With their help, you can effectively and beautifully divide the space of a large room by installing them in the right place from wall to wall. Having decided on the design and shape of the doors, it is necessary to purchase all the necessary parts, starting with the door leaf and ending with all the small details of fittings and subsequent finishing. How to install sliding interior door with your own hands, it is best to consider the example of the simplest design with one solid door leaf. During the description of each stage, the nuances of installing other possible systems will also be described.

Getting ready to install

Before installing the door, you should tidy up the opening itself and decide on which side of the doorway the sliding doors will be mounted.

View the path of your usual following from the entrance to the apartment and to the farthest rooms. For aesthetic reasons, the sliding door mechanism is best produced from the side of the room you enter. This is especially true for doors that are not hidden in the wall or behind a false panel. However, in view of the fact that the space where the door leaf is retracted cannot be occupied by furniture and things, in the case of a passage from the corridor to the room, it is more logical to mount the entire structure from the side of the corridor. It does not often contain furniture.

Sliding door installation process

1. Installation of guides

The first step is the installation of sliding doors with your own hands by marking the walls to further secure the guides.

If a lower guide is used, it must be deepened into the floor. It is advisable to consider this at the mount stage. floor covering so that the guide is fixed to the very base of the floor ( concrete screed). You can check the horizontality of the guide using a level.

The top guide profile is installed next. The reference line should mark the position of the bottom edge of the guide. The height of its placement is equal to the height of the door leaf and an increase of 15-20 mm for the lower gap to the floor and the upper gap from the leaf to the guide. The last parameter can be determined from the instructions supplied with the fittings. Usually 10-20 mm for access to the adjusting nuts on the door holders.

It is necessary to strictly observe the horizontal installation of the guide, otherwise the door will subsequently begin to spontaneously shift towards the slope. You can check the correctness of its placement using the building or water level.

The length of the guide is twice the width of the door leaf plus 4-5 cm of margin for its normal course. The margin for installing plugs and space for a closer, if any, is also taken into account.

Sliding door delivery example

Usually, brackets are used to secure the top rail, however, for massive doors from a solid array or with the participation of glass, it will be necessary to strengthen the structure. For this it is better to use wooden beam 50x50 mm or wider, depending on the width of the guide profile, which will securely attach to the wall, and the guide is narrower to the timber. In the case when the door is mounted on a plasterboard wall, it is necessary to provide an additional profile in the wall frame and fasten the guide to it or in close proximity using drywall anchors. If the wall is monolithic or brickwork, then dowels are used (in the case of brickwork holes for dowels are located in the volume of the brick, and not between them). Additional reinforcement and the use of a base in the form of a bar or profile is even more relevant if a sliding compartment door or multi-section options are installed, which involve the use of a guide with several grooves.

2. Fixing the holders on the door leaf, fittings (handles, locks)

The next step is to fix the brackets on the door leaf, with which it will hold on to the roller carriages. It is necessary to carry out their installation following the instructions, on the sides of the upper end of the door, departing from the edge of 1 cm. The best option for any type of sliding doors, except for the case when there will be a holder in the form of a clip on the sides of the door leaf. For fully glass doors, special fasteners are used in the form of metal plates with rubber substrates, between which the edge of the glass is clamped. Such tongs allow you to get rid of the need to make holes in the glass.

When an accordion door is being assembled, brackets with a swivel roller are installed on each section. Most often, each section is fixed in the central part, but it can also be fixed along the edges of the sections. In this case, on the first section, the bracket is held by one edge, and on the next, by the opposite. This is how the positions on all the constituent parts alternate.

At the same stage, you can mount the necessary elements in the door leaf, such as handles and locks. Mounting of counter parts of the lock on doorway it is better to postpone until later, the door has yet to be hung on the guide and adjusted. It should be noted that for doors that will completely enter the wall space, handles and all fittings are selected and installed deep into the door leaf and do not protrude beyond its dimensions.

It is better to install brush seals on the lower or side end of the door after the first installation of the door on the rails and their adjustment.

3. Door leaf installation

By fixing the guide and the necessary elements on the door leaf, you can carry out a control installation to adjust the levels and check the steps already completed. For this step, you will need an assistant who will support the canvas while you start the roller carriages into the groove of the guide. If a partition door is installed to separate the space of the room and the guide is fixed from wall to wall, the carriages are brought into the guide in advance, which has a special window for this. Fixing the door leaf in this case comes down to joining the brackets-holders on the door and the anchor extending from the carriage.

4. Installation of limiters, closers

The limiters will prevent the movement of the door leaf along the guides and will not allow the carriages with rollers to fall out of it. It is important to distribute the stops correctly, especially if it is a multi-section or folding door. The limiters will not allow the design of such products to converge too tightly, thereby damaging the connection between the sections. As a limiter, plugs can be used, made in the form of a guide profile or as studs, which are inserted into the guide in the required places. It is advisable to choose limiters with special stops made of soft plastic or rubber. With them, there will be no constant sound of impacts when opening, and the moving parts of the doors will work longer.

5. Fixing platbands and extensions

Platbands close the mechanism of the sliding door to protect them from dust and debris and to give an aesthetic appearance. This is not true for doors built into the wall or behind a bezel. In this case, only corners are installed at the edges of the walls with brush seals to close the gap between them and the door leaf.

Platbands are installed on brackets pre-screwed to the wall or to the rail itself using latches. This option does not leave any visible fasteners on the outside.

A bounding structure is installed, against which the door will abut, in the closed state. This can be either a wooden beam with the necessary finish, or a special profile, which is purchased along with the rest of the fittings. It is installed strictly vertically, using a plumb line for this. In this profile, the counterpart of the locking mechanism of the door lock will be installed. Its installation should be postponed until the door is fully installed on the rails and adjusted.

6. Checking and final adjustment of the door

Since previously the guides for the doors were installed strictly horizontally, which prevents spontaneous opening or closing of the doors, the position of the leaf is adjusted to a greater extent for visually correct perception. The door must fit snugly and evenly against the boundary structure and move parallel to the floor surface. With this setting, you can visually eliminate some irregularities or distortions of the floor or walls by adjusting the average position of the door leaf.

Installing sliding doors instead of swing doors is a serious plus in terms of saving space. This is especially true for small-capacity apartments of typical development of the second half of the twentieth century. But even in a new spacious house / apartment, an extra place will not be superfluous.

Sliding design is a requirement of time and fashion. If you are not a staunch follower of the classics, it is better to install a sliding compartment door instead. How to make interior sliding doors with your own hands?

Peculiarities

Sliding interior doors:

Canvas;

Sliding mechanism;

Hardware set;

platbands;

Cassette (if you want the door to retract into the wall).

The sliding mechanism consists of guides, rails and roller carriages. Rails come with top and bottom placement (above the opening on the wall and on the floor). With the lower placement of the guide rail, there are always two, with the upper, one is enough. Top rail doors are considered more durable.

There are other advantages: the rail on the floor interferes with free movement around the apartment, dirt accumulates in it. The top rail design does not have these drawbacks. So that the door without a lower rail does not sway relative to the plane of the opening, an emphasis is installed on the floor, and a groove is selected in the lower end of the leaf, into which the emphasis goes.

The frame for sliding doors is usually the same as that of the hinged design. The only limitation: it is always U-shaped. If you have an arched opening, you will have to sacrifice something: either the idea of a compartment door, or an arch.

The door leaf for sliding doors is also no different from the usual swing. Folding models have differences: each accordion / book fold consists of at least two sections, they have their own standard sizes. At compartment doors, the leaf arrangement is identical to the hinged one, the dimensions are the same. Many manufacturers produce canvases that are easily adapted to either of the two designs.

By making sliding interior doors with your own hands, you can save money: purchase only a sliding mechanism and, if necessary, other fittings: limiters, handles, a lock. And use all the wooden components (box, canvas and even platbands) from the old swing door.

Some restoration work will be required, but you will not have to spend extra money. And there is no risk of making a mistake when choosing the dimensions of the door. How to remake swing door sliding, see below.

Important: when buying a sliding mechanism, consider the design and weight of your door. The power and wear resistance of the carriages depend on this. For a plastic or hollow web, a pair of aluminum rollers is enough; for a massive oak, three or four steel rollers are required.

Installation

Installation of sliding doors is done according to the following instructions (see video):

1. Remove the canvas, dismantle the trim.

2. Screw the hinges, handles, lock. Cover the grooves from them on the box and the canvas with wood putty. If the door is veneered or laminated, and you do not plan to redo the coating, you will have to add pigment to the putty. In this case, you need to carefully select the color. Brilliant putty can be made independently from ground sawdust and varnish.

3. At the bottom end of the blade, select a groove along the entire length (preferably with a milling cutter, because the line should be perfectly even).

4. Select grooves for handles on both sides and for a lock if needed.

5. Screw the rollers to the upper end of the blade. From the corners you need to retreat at least 5 centimeters.

6. Install a guide rail on the wall above the opening. Measure the location with a level. The placement height is equal to the height of the web with rollers, taking into account the gap at the bottom, the length of the guide is two widths of the web.

7. Insert the stop into the bottom groove.

8. Insert the rollers into the guide.

9. Align the canvas vertically, fix the stop on the floor.

10. Close the end of the guide cap.

11. Install fittings and platbands.

If you are installing sliding doors in an apartment with a bottom rail, the rollers are attached from below. The sequence of actions is the same: the rollers are inserted into the rail, the upper edge of the door is inserted into the guide. Align vertically, attach the rail to the floor.

Installing an open compartment door is simple, it is only important to clearly measure the location of all elements. It is much more problematic to mount interior sliding doors with your own hands like a “pencil case” (installation with a cassette, when the canvas moves into the wall when opened). In this case, you will have to dismantle a section of the wall equal to the width of the canvas, install a cassette and sew it up with drywall.

The volume of work increases exponentially. However, such an installation is also justified: the section of the wall next to the opening remains free, because. it is no longer needed to move the canvas. Next to it, you can put furniture, hang a picture on the wall, etc. Finally, this design looks very stylish and modern.
