The better to paint the floor on the veranda. How to process the wooden floor on the veranda - the choice of composition How to cover the terrace on the open street

Terrace - an open area, which is a "transit point" between the house and the street. The choice of flooring for her is not an easy task. The terrace is open to rain, snow, summer heat and winter frosts. Therefore, the material for its coating must retain its functionality in difficult, almost outdoor conditions. And, of course, to have high aesthetic qualities.

Floor coverings for the terrace should have the following properties:

  • High frost resistance. This characteristic is provided by a low rate of water absorption - up to 3%. Materials with this indicator are not impregnated with moisture, it does not freeze in the cold and, accordingly, cannot lead to cracking and damage to the coating.
  • Moisture resistance. The floor on the terrace is exposed to atmospheric precipitation. Therefore, the materials used for coating should not absorb moisture, deform from it, or rot.
  • Durability. Any coating that "works" in atmospheric conditions must be more durable than home coatings. Otherwise, after 2-3 years it will have to be changed.
  • Low abrasion. This indicator directly affects the durability and appearance terrace floor. The minimum abrasion class of materials that are acceptable for terraces is IV.
  • Anti-slip properties. They are important for the safety of people, especially when walking on a wet or icy terrace floor.
  • UV resistant. If a canopy is not planned to be installed above the terrace, then the sun's rays can reduce the color intensity of the coating. This will not happen if you use materials with a high degree of protection from UV rays.

All these characteristics are inherent in the following materials, which are considered the best for covering terraces:

  • decking from WPC;
  • ceramics (clinker, porcelain stoneware, ceramic tiles);
  • concrete slabs and tiles;
  • stamped concrete;
  • stone slabs;
  • wooden planks.

Let's consider all these options in detail.

Option 1. Composite decking

To cover the terraces, a very convenient material is a specialized decking board. It is made from a wood-polymer composite (WPC), consisting of plastic (20%) and shredded wood (80%). Composite board is a good alternative to natural wood, combining the aesthetics of wood and the hassle of plastic.

WPC boards look almost natural, but are much easier to care for. They are easy to wash, they do not require special care. WPC material is pleasant to the touch, there are no cracks and knots in it, it does not slip - thanks to the longitudinal grooves.

Advantages:

  • high moisture resistance;
  • heat resistance - withstands temperatures from -45 ° C to + 80 ° C;
  • the presence of anti-slip grooves on the surface;
  • does not need additional processing and coating;
  • simple installation (dismantling);
  • simple care.

The disadvantage of composite decking is the visual and tactile difference from natural wood, which, despite the efforts of manufacturers, can still be traced.

At the moment, decking is the most popular option for patio flooring. However, we recommend that you purchase such a decking board only in specialized and time-tested stores, for example, deckmayer.ru. This store offers excellent value for money and is well established.

Option #2. Terrace ceramics

The most suitable ceramic products for terrace floor:

  • clinker;
  • porcelain stoneware;
  • ceramic tiles for outdoor use.

Clinker tiles (paving stones) are used for finishing terraces on the ground or on a screed. In fact, clinker is burnt brick, which has absolute frost resistance and does not absorb moisture at all. Available in smooth and ribbed surfaces different colors: Neutral white to rich red. The shape of the clinker tiles is square or rectangular, with straight or beveled edges.

Porcelain stoneware - frost-resistant and reliable tile, combining in its composition ceramics and granite. It is distinguished by a variety of design, thanks to the ability to imitate different materials: natural stone (any - from granite to marble), wood, leather. Only unpolished porcelain stoneware with a rough surface is suitable for terraces. Laying is carried out on a prepared concrete slab, on frost-resistant glue.

Ceramic tiles are also used for terraces. But you need to choose it more carefully than clinker and porcelain stoneware. It must be frost-resistant (look for the designation on the packaging!), Specially made for paving on the street. Products with a corrugated, structured surface are suitable. Despite the high decorativeness, it is strictly forbidden to use tiles with a glazed, shiny surface for terraces. A suitable degree of abrasion is IV or V class.

Advantages of ceramic products:

  • high frost resistance;
  • durability;
  • color stability under the influence of precipitation and UV rays;
  • variety of textures, shapes, colors;
  • simple care;
  • easy repair (if necessary, you can replace each tile separately).

Disadvantages:

  • when paving, it is required to observe a slope so that water does not accumulate on the coating;
  • moisture can seep into the seams between the tiles, deforming the coating;
  • low impact strength;
  • porcelain stoneware and ceramic tiles become slippery when iced (this drawback can be circumvented by using special rubber mats with a non-slip effect).

The laying of ceramic tiles is carried out on raised terraces, which are a reinforced concrete slab with a leveling screed. To fix the tiles, use a special adhesive for outdoor use.

We will tell you about how to properly prepare the floor and lay porcelain tiles on it in the material:.

Option #3. Concrete slabs and tiles

The terrace area can be formed by paving concrete slabs or tiles on the ground. Laying is carried out on a cement-sand base. If the terrace is a raised concrete platform, then the slabs can be glued to it using adhesive mixtures for outdoor use. However, laying on cement-sand mortar preferred, especially when using large concrete slabs.

With the help of large-sized concrete slabs, you can pave a large area, spending very little time on it. The shape of the plates is rectangular or square. Common sizes: 60x60 cm, 50x50 cm, 60x45 cm, 30x30 cm.

Modern concrete slabs imitate hewn natural stone or ceramics. Plates with an unusual, figured surface are especially popular. For example, with stamped lines that visually divide the slab into several bricks - for styling ceramic paving stones.

Concrete or paving slabs smaller sizes differ great variety design. They can be of any shape: rectangular, square, diamond-shaped, polygonal, complex wavy. Various embossings are often performed on the surface in the form of lines, cracks (craquelure), squeezing (“under the skin”), geometric shapes, flowers, etc.

Advantages:

  • strength;
  • durability (at least 25-30 years);
  • variety of sizes, shapes, colors and surface structures;
  • the ability to create various patterns and ornaments from tiles;
  • simple installation;
  • ease of dismantling and restoration (for example, if it is necessary to lay communications under the coating, it is enough to remove a few tiles and then lay them in place again without changing to new ones).

Disadvantages:

  • when paving, it is necessary to observe a slope for water flow;
  • in winter, the surface of the tile can be slippery;
  • with an improperly prepared base, uneven subsidence of the tile is observed;
  • difficult to choose, as high and low quality tiles in the store can look the same.

Thanks to the introduction to concrete mix coloring pigments, the color of the tiles can be amazing. Now it's not just gloomy gray tones! In free sale there are tiles of absolutely any color: from white and yellow to rich red and deep blue.

Option #4. stamped concrete

This is decorative concrete, the surface of which can copy slabs. natural stone, paving stones, wooden parquet, bricks, river pebbles, ceramic tiles. Such a surface can be made on raised terraces, the base is a reinforced concrete slab.

Advantages:

  • durability;
  • strength;
  • the ability to imitate any material;
  • continuous concrete surface does not allow moisture to seep under the coating;
  • ease of maintenance.

Disadvantages:

  • gets very hot in summer;
  • when using smooth stamps, the concrete surface may be slippery;
  • long installation process.

Advantages of a wooden surface:

  • warm surface;
  • depreciation properties;
  • high decorative effect;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • a wide range of colors, sizes, structures of boards.

Disadvantages:

  • changes color under the influence of UV rays;
  • difficulties in care;
  • regularly requires treatment with antifungal coatings.

In the manufacture of the terrace, planed boards (treated with antiseptics and flame retardants) or special terraced (deck) boards are used. The last option is the best. Terrace wooden boards (decking) are made only from hardwoods (otherwise, heat treatment is used). Their edges are rounded, tenon-groove fastening is not provided. Decking elements are laid at a small distance from each other, due to which atmospheric moisture flows freely through the gaps. The surface of the boards can be not only smooth, but also corrugated (with grooves) - this increases the anti-slip properties of wood.

When choosing materials for the flooring of the terrace, it is not necessary to dwell on one option. If you like several paving methods, why not combine them? For example, combinations of tiles and wood, stone and clinker, clinker and decking are very popular.

Deciding to pave any open area of \u200b\u200bthe house or personal plot with a special coating in the form of a terraced board, many owners are wondering how to protect such a surface from the destructive influence of environmental factors. The article will discuss how to cover the terrace board in order to increase its service life and maintain aesthetics.

Wood flooring processing

Today there is a huge variety of substances designed to improve the performance of wood elements in the construction of outdoor floors.

In the article we are talking about a specific floor covering - a terrace board. This material is not natural wood, but it must also be protected from moisture, sunlight and wind.

Using the substances in question can improve the aesthetics and service life of the coating. These substances include oil, various impregnations and paints and varnishes. Before covering the decking board with one of these substances, you need to familiarize yourself with their characteristics and features, which are described later in the article.

It is important to take this information seriously if the owner wants the floors in his house to be beautiful, and it would not be embarrassing to publish them in a photo in social networks or present to guests.

Impregnation for decking

Even though the terrace board itself is extremely resistant to various types of impact, it still needs to be treated with substances in order to improve the protective characteristics.

The main sources that slowly damage such a coating:

  • biological: rodents, mold, fungus, insects, etc.;
  • natural: temperature fluctuations and their limit values, intense precipitation, icing, deformation and rapid aging of wood coatings;
  • mechanical: impact, scratching, wiping during operation, etc.

You can do all the flooring work yourself. In this case, it is necessary to use various impregnations. Antiseptic agents can become protection against biological factors.

There are two main types of such funds:

  • indelible - solutions based on oils;
  • washable - water-based.

Most often, antiseptic treatment of decking occurs at the production stage. In addition, no one forbids the use of impregnations, since there is no limit to increasing the reliability of the floor covering. The service life of such a coating can also be increased significantly.

It is very important to know that the various parts of the decking board are covered various types impregnation:

  • the end sides must be treated with wax emulsion impregnations, since these areas are most susceptible to moisture, which means that resistance to this factor must be increased;
  • antiseptics are intended for the bottom of the board, since it is there that direct contact with the base occurs and the risk of fungus formation or insect reproduction is high;
  • on the front side, it is best to apply decking oil or paints and varnishes.

Selection and application of oils

If there is any doubt as to which processing to take place directly on front side coatings, you will have to choose between varnish and oils.

Consider the main advantages of oil impregnation:

  • the degree of protection against moisture increases and the process of cleaning the coating is facilitated;
  • oil does an excellent job of protecting against dirt;
  • the oil layer does not peel off and does not blister, unlike the lacquer one, therefore you can carry out the coating yourself without any special conditions;
  • the active ingredients contained in the composition of the oil effectively combat cracking and drying of wood, which are inevitable on fresh air;
  • the oil very well highlights the naturalness of the wood in the composition of the decking, and does not hide the natural texture, like paint and varnish coatings. Therefore, before painting the wooden floor on the terrace, think about the aesthetics of the result if you want to show guests in the future or post beautiful wood floors in a photo on social networks, and not primitive painted ones (read: "");
  • The oil is excellent at blocking UV rays.

It is best to use modern oil formulations to cover decking boards. They are universal protection coatings from rotting processes, negative impact moisture and pollution.

Varieties of oil compositions

Before processing the floor on the outdoor terrace oil composition It is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the main types of such substances.

You can apply any composition on your own, and today there are several varieties of oils:

  • having the effect of toning;
  • containing in its composition natural wax components;
  • with antibacterial effect;
  • eliminate the sliding effect.

It is possible to increase the strength characteristics of the surface with the help of wax oils. If you want to give the coating an original shade and prevent the formation of mold, it is recommended to use oils with an antibacterial effect and tinting.

In the cold season, it will be more practical to use oils that eliminate the slip effect, which will definitely manifest itself when the humidity rises. Among other things, such a coating will receive the effect of moisture repellency.

There are natural and synthetic oils. Indoors, of course, you can use natural compounds, but their protective effect is weaker than that of artificial ones.

In street conditions, their use becomes impractical. However, from a design point of view, natural oils are more attractive, as they give the coating an original shine.

Use of oils

There is a certain sequence of actions that can be performed independently to process the coverage:

  1. Boards must be free of dust and debris.
  2. It is necessary to apply the oil composition with a roller, brush or sponge. Processing must be subjected to the end and back of the board. Before and during the application of decking, the oil should be stirred vigorously to achieve uniformity.
  3. It is important to carefully study the instructions for using oil impregnation, since sometimes the manufacturer requires re-applying the composition a few hours after the first procedure.
  4. Laying of treated boards can be carried out approximately one week after treatment, so that the treated wood has time to reach its maximum condition.

Lacquering on deck boards

Increase service life and ease maintenance flooring Lacquer for decking will help, which today is presented in two main varieties:

  • yacht varnish;
  • facade varnish.

Any of these types can be applied independently, but before covering the wooden floors on the terrace open to the influence of natural factors, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the pros and cons of each of the varieties of varnish.

Yacht varnish gives the coating the highest wear resistance and hardness. They can be used very effectively inside the house, but they are not suitable for the street because such a coating will not last more than one year.

The disadvantage of this composition arose because the varnish does not tolerate the natural deformation of wood, having poor elasticity. Before treating a decking board with a yacht varnish in outdoor conditions, it is worthwhile to understand that the coating will soon peel off and crack.

Such a composition cannot be restored, since its restoration implies a complete cleaning of the coating and applying varnish again. This process requires a significant amount of effort and time.

Facade varnish has the best characteristics, and in particular, it has the same elasticity that is required for outdoor use.

The disadvantage of such compositions is excessive softness, which does not contribute to increased wear resistance during operation. In this case, cleaning the coating is unacceptable, because a soft varnish will clog any grinder in just a few of its revolutions.

Decking boards

Based on the foregoing, we can conclude that the varnish coating is not very suitable for processing terrace boards.

An alternative agent for treating such a coating is decking paint, which can also be applied on its own.

You can use the following types of paints:

  1. Based on oils and alkyds. Cheap formulations that allow reapplication to an existing oil painting. Such compositions do not possess reliability and long service life.
  2. Water-based based on acrylic components. This type of paint is applied perfectly to the wood coating and gives them additional protection from various natural factors. It is important that the purchased composition is initially ready for wood processing and does not require its preparation using complex technology. Cleaning the coating treated with such paints is very simple: a simple wet cleaning is enough.
  3. Polyurethane. If the owner wants to increase the wear resistance of the coating, then this type of paint is ideal. The strength of this composition increases the characteristics of the boards and protects them from wiping during operation. The duration of operation in this case can be increased by a period of about 10 years.
  4. Latex. An excellent composition, well adhering to the surface, odorless and serving for a very long time. It is said that latex paint creates the effect of "breathing" wood.

Based this description, you need to choose for yourself in advance how to paint the floor on the terrace, taking into account the parameters of the room in a particular house.

Operation of the treated decking board

Based on the descriptions that are presented in this article, it is possible to clearly determine how to cover the floor of the terrace open to the influence of natural factors.

In addition to how to process the coating, you need to take care of its care in order to positive effects not lost over time

  • monthly, the floor should be washed with soapy water, which is important to completely wash to prevent the formation of stains;
  • boards should always be swept and cleaned from fallen leaves and dirt;
  • the seams between the boards must be cleaned of debris clogged in them, as this will significantly improve air circulation under the coating;
  • scratches can be avoided if furniture and household appliances rubber footrests for transport.

When cleaning the surface of the decking board, it is best to follow the following recommendations:

  • snow and ice can be removed with calcium chloride or rock salt, plastic shovel and brushes. As soon as the products have been applied and the result has been achieved, it is recommended to rinse the surface additionally;
  • rust spots on the surface can be removed with acids;
  • stubborn dirt can be removed by making an effort and scrubbing with an ordinary soapy solution and a stiff brush;
  • greasy stains on the floor can be cleaned with chemicals or hot water;
  • wine, berry, chalk and ink stains are removed with hot soapy water or bleach diluted in correct proportion;
  • stains from cigarette butts, paints or acids can be removed by sanding the surface of the board;
  • Prevention of scratches on the coating can be done by regularly grinding the floor surface.

Outcome

This article describes in detail the main tools for processing wood materials and specifically decking. If there are certain difficulties with this procedure or there is no desire to perform it, then you can always turn to specialists.

Professional companies will not only process the coating, but also select the means for processing on their own, based on the conditions presented by the client.

Any host suburban area wants to add a wooden veranda to the house. This cozy place becomes the most demanded for all family members. After the construction of the main structure, it is necessary to paint it. What paint to choose for the terrace in order to reliably protect the wood from exposure external factors? Today we will try to consider this issue from all sides.

Before you start painting the veranda, you need to prepare the necessary material in advance. There has been a lot of debate about the best material to use for outdoor wood surfaces. The fact is that open areas made of wood can only be protected for a while, since this natural material which is difficult to save.

The main destructive factors

The product made of wood is constantly under the influence of weather conditions. The structure of this material is able to easily pass any liquid. The moisture content in the tree allows the development of sets harmful organisms. As a result, the product begins to rot and disintegrate. In addition, fibers swollen from moisture can begin to destroy the tree from the inside, especially during the cold winter period.

Throughout the year, the boards are subject to strong drops. temperature regime. As a result, they change their shape. In this case, not every coating can become a reliable protection against such deformation of the material.

Natural wood is the most nutrient medium for many mold fungi. They quickly attack material with a large presence of moisture, destroying all the fibers inside with their juices.

Important! There are fungi that can destroy the entire building in a short period of time.

The ultraviolet rays emanating from the sun adversely affect some properties wood flooring. They can also ruin the painting, turning it into a faded look.

Wood is very fond of a variety of worms, larvae and other harmful insects. Bark beetles gnaw through many passages, and eventually eat the structure. In addition, wood is attacked by mice and rats that love to settle in summer cottages.

Now we know that there are quite a few enemies at the veranda made of wood. As a result, there are difficulties in caring for this construction. Therefore, it is necessary to find best option to protect the object from rain, sun, heat and frost.

The choice of material for the veranda

The best option for covering a wooden deck is paint. However, when choosing this material, you need to pay attention to the fact that you should buy a special paint composition for the floor. To paint the rest of the structure, you can use any paint intended for outdoor woodwork.

Often coniferous wood is used in the construction of the veranda. They are the most available material among tree species. In addition, they have a natural protection against water - these are the resins with which the wood is impregnated.

For deck board conifers You will need a much smaller amount of paint to cover it.

Acrylic latex paint

This coating has recently become more and more popular among consumers. It has good feedback about performance properties. In addition, the paint is easy to work with: it is odorless and also does not harm health. Manufacturers produce this composition in a huge range of colors and shades.

Aqualaki

Scuba diving today is also popular among summer residents. They are great for processing decking boards.

Oil waxes

Such a coating is used when they want to preserve the beautiful texture of wood. However, this composition has one drawback - it is a high cost.

I would like to note that all of the above compositions are expensive types of coating wooden surfaces. But, their advantage is that they look very nice, and they also have the longest service life.

Now we can talk about flooring on the terrace. This is a separate issue and quite vulnerable. This building in the country carries a heavy load due to the constant influence of unfavorable factors from the outside. And for the floor, such a load increases many times, so they walk on it in shoes, which often happens in a swamp, and also the water on the floor does not dry out for a long time, etc.

Floor Features

Every year, summer residents have to deal with such a problem as replacing a terraced floor board. As mentioned earlier, atmospheric conditions can damage even a strong coating. Sometimes wooden floors can save correct styling, which provides for a gap between the boards of 2-4 mm.

But even with perfect laying, it is necessary to process the wood paintwork materials to keep the floor from collapsing. They are selected depending on what kind of wood the flooring consists of.

Basically, they prefer to buy a floor board from coniferous species, in particular, larch. Whoever has the opportunity, order a terrace board for this purpose.

It is very important before covering the veranda with paint, to properly prepare it for this process. To do this, it is necessary, first of all, to treat the floor and other structural elements with a primer and an antiseptic. In this case, it is possible to use the object as long as possible.

Any paint finish designed for exposed wood can last up to three years.

Ordinary enamel paint or varnish is only suitable for indoor use. To cover the floors of open verandas, it is better to use terrace oil, which does its job perfectly.

Preparing wood for processing

  1. If the wood floor has been previously painted, be sure to clean it from old paint. In advanced cases, it is recommended to use any solvent for this purpose.
  2. Before painting the wood, all kinds of knots and other defects should be removed. Sometimes the material after a long contact with rain and sun becomes unsightly dark color. To get rid of not only defects, but also fungi that have settled in the wood, it is necessary to remove the top layer using a special tool.
  3. Boards that have become unusable must be replaced with new ones, otherwise they will simply crack.
  4. If during the period of use of the material, cracks, holes and other holes appeared in it, they must be repaired with putty and then sanded.
  5. Before proceeding with the coating of the boards with a protective substance, the floors must be thoroughly cleaned of dust and foreign objects.
  6. It is recommended to cover the floors with more than one layer of primer so that the composition soaks the wood well. Complete drying of the material is achieved after three days. And only after that you can start covering the floor with paint or terrace oil.

Floor covering

After finishing preparatory work, we begin the painting process, which should take place in several stages. The first layer of paint can be applied with a roller, and the gaps between the boards can be painted with a brush.

If the tree is being painted for the first time, the paint must be applied in a thin layer and allowed to dry completely, which can take up to 7 days. There must be at least two such layers, and all of them must be applied in the thinnest possible layers. After finishing work, the floor must be thoroughly rinsed with warm water.

Terrace boards are made from different materials– natural wood or wood-polymer composite. In the latter case, due to the content of polymers, the product does not require a finish coat. Boards made of natural wood are treated with compounds that protect the material from external influences. Among such means of protection it is worth mentioning decking oil, varnishes and paints. Each of these protections has its own advantages and disadvantages. negative qualities to be taken into account when choosing them.

Ways of processing a terrace board made of natural wood

The most reliable treatment for terrace decking is three-phase protection:

  • the ends of the board during installation are treated with a special wax emulsion, since these places are most vulnerable to moisture (building liquid wax can be used instead of the emulsion);
  • from the back wood can be damaged by insects and microorganisms that cause rotting and mold formation, so antiseptic impregnations are used (they are oil-based and water-based);
  • the most important of larch and other types of wood is made on the front side of the product (for this, cold or hot oil is applied to the surface, varnishing or painting of the decking is carried out).

To decide how to cover a wooden floor on an open veranda, you need to study the advantages, features and variety of finish coatings that are applied from the front side.

Oil Benefits

Many owners of terraces and verandas are wondering why cover the board with oil if it can be painted or varnished? But the last two coatings quickly wear out and crack under the influence of external factors. If the peeling film of the protective coating no longer covers the wood and does not protect it from moisture and the sun, then the decking quickly deteriorates and loses its attractiveness. In addition, oil for decking made of larch or other species allows the wood to breathe, which cannot be said about varnish and paint. As a result, the material does not crack, last longer and retain its attractiveness.

Advantages of decking oil:

  • This good protection from moisture;
  • reduces the degree of surface contamination;
  • the coating does not peel off, does not crack and is not covered with bubbles;
  • reliable protection against drying and cracking of wood;
  • oil emphasizes the beauty of the natural texture of the material;
  • protects against negative impact ultraviolet rays.

Advice! Before processing a larch decking board, pay attention to the opinion of experienced craftsmen. They recommend using oil Osmo. So larch wood will be protected from pollution, deformation and decay.

Types of oils for decking

Even decking that has been impregnated needs additional oil treatment. On sale there are products for various purposes:

  1. Products with colorant to give the surface a certain shade.
  2. Oils with natural wax, which are applied hot to protect wood and better absorption into the material.
  3. Special formulations with antibacterial additives, such as Tikkurila decking oil.
  4. Products with anti-slip effect.

To give the surface extra strength, buy formulations with the addition of wax. If you do not know how to paint the decking on the open veranda or garden path, then it is better to treat them with mixtures with an anti-slip effect. Due to the content of water-repellent components, they increase the durability of the coating.

Board varnishing

If painting a terrace board creates a completely opaque layer on the surface that hides the beauty of the material, then varnish allows you to get a strong, wear-resistant, durable and transparent coating. The varnish does not hide the beauty of the texture of the material, so the terrace or veranda looks natural and natural.

Lacquer decking has the following advantages:

  • aesthetic appeal of the surface;
  • the applied protective layer facilitates the care of the board and requires regular updating;
  • high protection against moisture and drying;
  • surface wear resistance.

Disadvantages of varnish:

  • varnish firmly clogs all the pores of wood, so the material cannot breathe;
  • under a dense varnish layer, the natural beauty of the tree is slightly lost;
  • fragility of the coating;
  • during operation, the varnish cracks and wears off, so it needs to be re-applied (in this case, the entire surface will have to be sanded to remove the old varnish layer);
  • the impossibility of local repair (lacquer cannot be applied to certain areas of the floor, since places with layers will be visible, it will be necessary to grind and apply a new coating on the entire surface).

Types of varnishes for outdoor boards

For terrace decking laid outdoors, the following types of varnishes are suitable:

  1. Yacht varnish. These are polyurethane-alkyd compounds or alkyd-based mixtures. The main advantage of these compositions is increased hardness and wear resistance. If you cover a board that will be used outdoors with yacht varnish, then it will not last more than one season, as it will crack due to deformation expansions and contractions of wood. This is due to the low elasticity of the varnish. It very quickly exfoliates from the base when used outdoors.
  2. Facade varnish. It includes alkyd-acrylic and acrylic compounds. These elastic mixtures do not crack or flake off when the wood is deformed. However, they are quite soft, so they do not increase the wear resistance of the terrace decking. Another disadvantage of facade varnish is that it is very difficult to sand off, since soft material scores very fast abrasive wheel grinder.

Important! Lacquers make it easier to care for the terrace board and prolong its service life.

Paints on wood

Terrace board paint is no less in demand than varnish or oil. Its advantages are as follows:

  • simplicity and ease of application;
  • creates a durable finish layer;
  • reliably protects the material from moisture and sunlight;
  • increases the wear resistance of the surface;
  • aesthetic appeal.

The disadvantages of paints for terrace decking include the fact that they hide the natural beauty of the material and the surface loses its natural look. Paint wears out quickly and cracks.

Types and selection rules

The following types of paint compositions are suitable for outdoor terrace coatings:

  1. Alkyd and oil paints allow you to save money and are suitable if the floor was previously covered with an oil composition. These are reliable, but short-lived coatings.
  2. Water-based mixtures based on acrylic components provide good adhesion to wooden base and give increased stability material to external weather influences. The composition is already ready for use. When thickened, the mixture is simply diluted with water.
  3. For increased wear resistance of the floor, polyurethane paints. These abrasion-resistant and durable finishes extend the life of your board for decades.
  4. latex paints adhere well to the base, odorless, very durable. The most important advantage of latex mixtures is that they allow the wood to breathe.

What type of coating to choose for a terrace board?

Experienced craftsmen advise owners of private houses to use special oil to cover the decking. It is a universal durable material with a high degree of protection. Oil is considered an environmentally friendly product. It is safe for human health, since only oils of natural origin are used in the composition.

Among the benefits that speak in favor of the oil, it is worth mentioning the following:

  • the board becomes matte and natural shine, the beauty of the texture is emphasized;
  • material does not crack and does not dry out under oil, since it can "breathe", that is, absorb and release moisture;
  • due to the presence of special additives it is easy to buy tinting oil, wax formulations or mixtures to reduce surface slip.

The oil guarantees a high degree of UV protection. Contaminants from decking covered with oil are easily washed off with water pressure. At any temperature, the coating retains high elasticity. Oils with colorants emphasize the structure of wood, and the material looks more expensive and respectable.

Larch belongs to coniferous deciduous species and is actively used for the production finishing materials(lining, panels, floor board), furniture, moldings and much more. The Brinell hardness index is 109 units, while oak has 110 units. Due to the density and high gum content, wood demonstrates excellent resistance to water (including sea water), decay, woodworms, rodents, deformations and mechanical damage.

Manufacturers of larch deck boards recommend covering it with protective agents with antiseptic and water-repellent properties. Three types of paints and varnishes are best suited for these purposes:

  • Protective impregnations;
  • Polymer-containing varnishes and enamels;
  • Fat-containing compounds: oils, waxes and oil-wax mixtures;

Application protective equipment for decking.

Recall that the processing of larch decking is carried out only with products marked:

  • "for outdoor use" - this means that the compositions contain frost-resistant and plasticizing additives that ensure the safety of the coating in any, even the most extreme operating conditions.
  • "for the floor" or "for terraces" - that is, the coating for the terrace board is particularly resistant to abrasion loads and will last at least 5-10 years in the open air.

Protective impregnations

As practice shows, many consumers are not satisfied with the film-forming coating for decking. In preferences - the preservation of a pleasant to the touch warm surface of the tree without signs of processing or with a slight toning. To ensure minimal protection of wood from biogenic factors, special impregnations or primers can be used. A whole series of funds is available for:

All funds are preparatory (intermediate) used for finishing compositions. However, this does not prevent them from being used as independent means, because on the wood treated with the above compositions no surface film is formed that clogs the pores. The downside is that the impregnations are forced out of the decking during operation, so the protection needs to be updated periodically - at least once every 2-3 years.

To ensure a sustainable effect, it is necessary to use covering products from a series of protective and decorative, that is, a variety of paint and varnish and oil-wax compositions.

Varnishes and enamels

Film-forming transparent or translucent varnish compositions are colorless and colored (toning). Good, high-quality products perfectly emphasize the natural pattern of the treated wood, forming a water- and dirt-repellent film on the surface.

However, the problem is that parquet, universal and furniture varnishes are mainly intended for indoor use. Only one series of products can be used for outdoor work - these are the so-called yacht compositions based on alkyd-urethane or polyurethane-acrylic (Tikkurila Unica Super, Belinka Yacht, Eurotex Yacht, etc.). They can process any wooden surfaces that are not subject to strong abrasive wear: walls, ceilings, railings, gazebos, furniture (including garden furniture), as well as elements of boats not below the waterline.

Yacht varnishes are resistant to weathering, prevent fading or yellowing of wood under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. But as a finish for floor materials they do not last long - abrasion resistance is low. Therefore, even if they process a decking board, the coating will last for a short time - 1-3 years, no more.

For a decking board made of larch, it is better to choose another type of film-forming compounds - enamels. These are multicomponent compositions for outdoor and indoor use, which after polymerization form an opaque dense coating that is resistant to water, frost, sunlight, abrasion and other types of loads. Suitable for terraces:

  • Nitrocellulose enamels (NC) are a time-tested paint that works great on any material, from concrete to wood. The material is quite toxic, but after application on the painted surface, a smooth, glossy and durable film is obtained.
  • Polymer-containing enamels - alkyd, urethane-alkyd, polyurethane, polyurethane-acrylic. They produce water-based paints and solvents. The former are considered safe to use, the latter are exceptionally resistant to mechanical stress. The degree of gloss depends on the selected product. Foreign manufacturers, as a rule, offer glossy, matte, semi-gloss and semi-gloss enamels. In the assortment of Russian factories there are only the first two varieties.

Advice! When buying, pay attention: the label should be marked "for the floor." This means that the composition contains special hardening additives that increase the resistance of the coating to abrasion, impact, etc.

All enamels are produced in a limited palette: standard white plus 8-25 colors. But they can be tinted by machine or manually in over 5000 shades. Painting can be carried out with any painting tool: roller, brush, sponge, spray gun.

Oils and waxes

Fat-containing compositions based on vegetable oils and natural waxes do an excellent job of protecting the decking. Due to the content of various additives, the coating is not just absorbed into the pores, but strengthens the surface of the wood, gives it water and dirt-repellent, wear-resistant, fungicidal and anti-slip properties. On treated boards, the impregnation does not form a film, partially protects the decking from fading and cracking in the sun. The range of well-known manufacturers includes colorless formulations, as well as tinted and pigmented ones. Thanks to the last two types, larch can be given the appearance of bog oak, reddish merbau or golden teak.

As a rule, oils and waxes for outdoor use are produced in a kit consisting of:

  1. Priming impregnations with a liquid texture based on water or solvents;
  2. Finishing compositions with a denser texture and a variety of additives. Some manufacturers even offer oils reinforced with polyurethane.

Note that larch, mounted on the terrace, belongs to unpretentious species, so you can purchase any of the products available in the store to finish it. Apply oil or wax with a brush, pad, rag or sponge according to package instructions.
