Shelving for the collection. How to make a wooden rack correctly and easily with your own hands? Shelving schemes

If there is no storage space in your house for any group of items, be it books, work tools, etc., then you probably had to face the fact that as their number increased, the apartment began to gradually become cluttered. At first glance, it is enough to simply equip a pantry or an additional closet, however, the owners of small apartments do not always have such an opportunity due to lack of free space. How to arrange things in this case? The simplest and most practical solution to this problem will be the arrangement of a wooden shelving with your own hands. But this is far from the only case when shelving for the home, including wooden ones, can be useful. The use of a rack is also appropriate in the garage, which, without proper systematization of space, often turns into a dump of things, and on the balcony, where it will help to place seedlings or indoor plants in the most compact way. Also, with the help of the rack, you can implement zoning space. Despite the fact that the arrangement of the rack does not cause difficulties and is accessible even to a beginner, in this article we will tell you in detail how to make wooden shelving with your own hands.

Use of shelving: main varieties

The wooden rack is a capacious structure made of wood, consisting of a large number shelves, which are fixed on special racks. At the same time, the number of tiers depends only on the individual preferences of the owner. The prefabricated wooden rack can be used to store various items: books, dishes, tools, etc. It will fit perfectly into almost any interior, whether country or classic. The functional purpose of the premises in which a wooden rack will be appropriate is also diverse.

  • They will look most harmoniously in the children's room, where, thanks to the presence of open shelves, children can conveniently place their toys and subsequently have free access to them;
  • The functionality of an office or library can also be expanded with wooden shelving, which can be used to store books, documents and any important little things;

  • Often, the rack complements the interior of the kitchen, where some housewives place dishes, cereals or spices, which are used daily.
  • An integral point in the use of wooden shelving is their use for placement indoor plants and seedlings. In this case, you need to know a little trick known to professionals. It is known that most indoor plants, like seedlings, need a barely perceptible heating of the soil, which will contribute to effective growth and vital activity. To implement this principle, modern manufacturers offer expensive racks with automation, which can be easily replaced by covering the wooden shelves of the racks with foam plastic. This unique material, being an effective thermal insulator, is able to reflect the thermal radiation that forms in moist soil, returning it to the pot and thereby implementing the principle of minimal heating.

Constructive types of wooden racks:

  • Stationary rack. Its design is a frame consisting of racks and crossbars, on which a sufficient number of shelves are fixed. To increase the reliability and strength of a do-it-yourself stationary wooden rack, the photo of which is presented below;
  • Mobile racks- a constructive option, most suitable for those who cannot decide on their location. Due to the fact that such racks are equipped with wheels, in the process of their movement there is no need to unload the contents;
  • Rotating racks- a design that is suitable for storing various small items needed in the household: spices, dishes, hygiene items used daily;
  • Hanging racks- a design that allows you to optimize the space and use it rationally in the future. It consists of several shelves combined into a single structure.

Original options for mounting wooden shelving

Many believe that the rack is a rather primitive design, which is a rough frame with shelves. However, such options are used mainly on the balcony, in the basement or garage, where the furniture used must be durable and practical, while for residential premises, experts recommend giving preference to more original designs. For example, a rather nontrivial construction for home interior will become a rack consisting of a pair of oak boards and several glass bottles installed as shown in the photo below. And if, at first glance, the construction seems insufficiently stable to you, cast aside all doubts and boldly exploit it to the maximum, storing not only books, but also layouts of collectible wines.

Rope racks are no less original, for fixing which, unlike traditional frame structures, you only need two hooks on the wall. Of course, you can’t store heavy jars with blanks for the winter on them, but you can easily arrange photographs, souvenirs, books, dishes and other little things. Rope racks, being temporary structures, will also go for rooms to be repaired. In this case, it is enough to make a structure from scraps of sedge or laminate, mounted on a rope suspension. Fixing the structure will be facilitated if a heating pipe runs under the ceiling in the room where it will be located - it will be enough to tie a rope to it.

Guided by the following advice, you can make no less original wooden shelving without rear wall, which will be a good addition to the interior in an industrial style. To make it, you will need not only wooden boards, but also a couple water pipes as well as fittings. It is necessary to pay attention to original way installation of shelves - in this case, they are "mounted" on pipes like a children's pyramid. Due to the high rigidity of the tee-reinforced water pipes, we were able to dispense with the rear support legs required in the case of traditional installations.

If you decide to optimize the living space in a private house where there is a staircase leading to the second floor, the space below it can be used to equip the shelving, as shown in the photo.

Development of a drawing of a wooden rack: general requirements

The development of a drawing is an obligatory stage and a guarantee of arranging a convenient and practical rack. To make a drawing in accordance with all requirements, first of all, you need to accurately measure the place where the rack will subsequently be located. If you plan to use the structure to store work tools or jars of winter preparations, experts recommend giving preference to simple forms. In this case, it will be enough to determine the height of the product, which depends on the height of the room and the individual preferences of the owner. As for the installation of a wooden shelving in the garage with your own hands, it is recommended to do it in the entire height of the wall. The width of the rack shelves depends on what items will be stored on them - to arrange jars or books, shelves 25-40 cm wide are suitable, shelves for storing working tools are mounted taking into account their dimensions. The length of the shelves is another parameter that depends on the purpose of the rack. If shelves 1.5 meters long are suitable for storing toys, figurines and other small things, then for heavy books it is necessary to choose shelves whose length does not exceed 90 cm, which will prevent their deflection.

Summing up, we will briefly consider the general recommendations that must be followed in the process of developing a drawing:

  • The width of the rack is calculated taking into account the free area - its width corresponds to the width of the free space, however, for ease of installation, the resulting figure is reduced by 5-10 cm;
  • The width of the shelves of the rack should be no more than 1.5 m, which will prevent their deformation;
  • As for the depth of the shelves, here the most optimal value it is considered 50 cm. If, despite the recommendations of experts, you increase this figure, be prepared for the fact that there will be difficulties when getting items from distant shelves;
  • Most optimal height shelves - 30-60 cm, while the lower shelf can be a little deeper, which is especially important if you plan to store large items on the rack;
  • In the process of developing a drawing, it is necessary to make an approximate estimate of the dimensions of the items that will be placed on the shelves of the rack, and taking into account the gaps of 10-15 cm necessary for the free placement and removal of items from the rack, calculate the length of its shelves;
  • Do not forget about the rule of rational load distribution. On the lower shelves of the rack it is preferable to place the heaviest and bulky items, on the middle - items of medium weight and size, on the top - voluminous, but light items (boxes, clothes).

Important! If you are planning to equip a storage structure in a small room, the most suitable option for you will be a corner wooden rack. Its installation involves joining two racks at an angle of 45 degrees, which must be reflected in the drawing.

Materials and tools for making racks

Before proceeding with the manufacture of the rack, prepare necessary materials and tools:

According to experts, in order to make a high-quality rack, it is advisable to use boards made of natural wood. The most preferred, in this case, will be pine, oak or mahogany. It is not recommended to use boards made on the basis of wood shavings, as they are an impractical material with a short service life. When choosing wood for the manufacture of shelving, it is important to ensure that its moisture content does not exceed 12%. Before making the rack, the material used must be prepared - treated with antiseptic solutions and special impregnations, after which the boards should lie down for several days in the room where the installation will be carried out.

Apart from wooden planks, for the manufacture of the rack you will need the following set of materials and tools:

  • shelf holders;
  • metal corners;
  • wooden bars, with the help of which the transverse fixation of the shelves will be carried out;
  • furniture legs on wheels;
  • plywood;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • wood varnish and brush;
  • wood glue;
  • electric jigsaw and grinder;
  • drill;
  • a hammer;
  • tape measure and pencil, which will be needed for marking.

How to make a wooden shelving

  • The first stage of installation activities is the choice of the lower base. For its manufacture, a thick board is selected (its thickness is selected taking into account that a self-tapping screw 3 cm long is freely included in it). As for the remaining design parameters, the length and width of the board are equal to the maximum length and width of the rack, which you select yourself. In the lower part of the base with a step equal to one meter, experts recommend nailing transverse bars, the length of which is equal to their width. This will give the structure additional strength.
  • The next step is to work on the side walls of the rack. To reduce the cost of construction, thick plywood can be used instead of boards, marking it so that its width is equal to the width of the base. The height of plywood is chosen arbitrarily. Having cut the side walls of the desired size, make marks for the shelves on their inside. At the same time, remember that most often the height of the shelves is 21 and 42 cm. These two values can be alternated, which will allow you to equip the rack with roomy and, at the same time, neat shelves.

  • Next, cut out the shelves from wood. Their length should correspond to the inside of the rack so that they fit snugly and, at the same time, freely into the rack. The width of the shelves corresponds to the depth of the rack. As for the thickness of the shelves, it should be at least 2.5 cm, but experts recommend fixing them with transverse bars, which will give them additional strength. To nail the bars, you can use ordinary small cloves.
  • After you have cut out the shelves, you can start making the back wall. To simplify the task, experts suggest abandoning the installation of the back wall, but this is only if you are completely satisfied with the texture and color of the wall to which the rack adjoins. If mounting the back wall is necessary, it is cut out of ordinary plywood in accordance with the dimensions of the rack.

Rack assembly: step by step instructions

  • After all the details are prepared, it is necessary to proceed to the next crucial stage in the manufacture of a wooden shelving - assembly of the structure. On the this stage important to use different kinds fasteners: from wood glue to self-tapping screws and nails.
  • At the first stage, they take the lowest shelf, which will be used as a base, and attach the back wall of the rack to it using self-tapping screws. If the design of your wooden shelving for a balcony or other room does not provide for a back wall, immediately start working with the side walls. Previously, you have already made markings for attaching the shelves, which will facilitate the subsequent stages of assembling the rack.

  • On each of the marks, parallel to each other, it is necessary to fix special metal or plastic (depending on the expected load on the shelves of the rack) holders, on which the shelves will subsequently be placed. Then, using self-tapping screws, the side walls are mounted to the lower base, while maintaining the evenness of all corners. To increase the reliability of the structure, it is recommended to use metal corners as additional fixing elements.

  • Above, we described one of the common options for mounting shelves. It is not the only one and, in terms of its reliability, is inferior to the method that will be discussed below. Another, more solid way of fastening the shelves of the rack does not involve the installation of holders, since the shelves are attached directly to the side walls. First of all, with the help of self-tapping screws, the side walls are mounted to the base. Then, in order to effectively cope with the task, you will need the help of a partner who will place the shelf inside the rack in accordance with the markings previously made, while you will fasten them to the sidewalls from the outside with self-tapping screws. To increase the reliability of fastening, it is advisable to additionally fix the shelves from under the bottom with metal corners. When giving preference to this method of fastening shelves, it is important to remember that along with greater reliability, it is considered more complex and requires ideal measurements of the length of the shelves. During the installation process, it is important to avoid even minimal distortions, as they can completely ruin the design of the rack. To prevent this, from the very beginning it is necessary to use the building level.

Having prepared the main part of the structure, proceed to fix the cover, which will give the future rack a finished look and prevent dust from entering the top shelf. In the process of fastening, self-tapping screws are also used.

Another way to increase the reliability of the shelving structure involves smearing the holes after drilling with wood glue, which will provide additional strength. As the legs of the future rack, it is recommended to use furniture legs on wheels, which will make moving the structure more convenient and, at the same time, will prevent the rack from warping when exposed to high loads.

If you used chipboard or MDF boards to make the rack, add finished construction more aesthetic and finished appearance you can by sticking a melamine film on all the ends of the parts, which can be done using a conventional iron. The edge is laid on the end, pre-treated with fine-grained sandpaper, and smoothed with a hot iron. If there are extra edges of the edge, they are removed with a clerical knife.

To add originality to the rack, some shelves can be closed with doors or even turned into a whole closet. Additional design of the rack, which will give it a decorative effect, can be done by painting it with stain or varnish, decoupage or craquelure. The latter depends only on your imagination and individual preferences.

DIY wooden rack video

With your own hands, you need to read in detail the instructions for the assembly and installation of this design. To do this, it is not at all necessary to have special tools in the arsenal, since cutting the material can be ordered from professionals.

Preparation of materials

To perform the work, you can use calibrated standard materials, the largest of which is chipboard with a thickness of 16 millimeters. The back walls are quite possible to be made of hardboard, and the color will be universal - white. You will need to prepare the side parts of the cubes in the amount of 20 pieces. They will have square shape with a side of 300 mm. Large and small shelves should be cut, they are needed in the amount of 10 pieces each. In case of big size will be 700 x 300 millimeters, while small shelves will have dimensions equal to 500 x 300 millimeters. You will need blanks from fiberboard in the amount of 5 pieces with the following dimensions: 695 x 295, 495 x 295. Wooden can be made using a good circular saw according to the "Robland" type, but if you do not have such a tool, then you can cut chipboard with high quality using the help of professionals. Otherwise, do not take up the work, as the material will be damaged.

Preparation of fittings and fasteners

The fittings for the described design will be the color of which should be selected in accordance with the adhesive base. Gluing it yourself is quite simple, for this, an edge is applied to the end of the part with an adhesive layer down. First you need to heat up the iron, which should not be red-hot. Its working surface should be drawn several times along the edge so that it sticks to the end. Its edges should be pressed as tightly as possible. Until it has time to cool, the master must iron it with a dry rag. You can get rid of the excess with a sharp knife, after which you have to grind the ribs with fine-grained sandpaper.

In order to make a wooden rack with your own hands, you should prepare fasteners, for this you will need confirmations 5 x 70 millimeters, furniture nails 1.5 x 25 millimeters, as well as self-tapping screws with dimensions of 4 x 30 millimeters. For each cube, you will need 8 confirmations, which indicates the need to purchase 80 of these fasteners. With furniture nails you can nail the hardboard, and with self-tapping screws you should tighten the cubes together. These elements are optional, but recommended.

Instrument preparation

If you decide to make a wooden rack with your own hands, then you should prepare the aforementioned iron, drills with dimensions of 5 and 8 millimeters, a tape measure, a hammer, and also a pencil. A screwdriver is needed to drill 8mm holes. One bit must be hexagonal for confirmations. After the parts are ready, as well as all the tools and fasteners are assembled, you can begin assembly work.

Shelving assembly

If you are thinking about how to make a wooden rack with your own hands, then you should remember that the work will not be more difficult than when the usual bookshelf. The side of the shelving cube will be square with a side of 300 millimeters, so you can simplify the task. On it, the master marks the back and front edges, as well as the bottom and top. On a plane, it is easiest to make letter designations for orientation. From the back and front edges, measure 40 centimeters. If we are talking about the lower and upper edges, then the master measures 8 centimeters from them, where he puts crosses. On this, we can assume that the sidewall for installing 4 confirmations is marked. In the marks you need to drill through 8 mm holes.

If you decide to make a wooden rack with your own hands, it is recommended to consider the drawings of this design. They will allow you to understand that when drilling chipboard into the plane of the part, you should put some unnecessary segment or a flat board. This will prevent the drill from pulling out a piece of laminate from the wrong side.

Assembly technique

The shelves of the product will have different lengths, but their width is the same. Holes should be drilled to this width. In thickness, that is, in the end, with a 5 mm drill, you need to go deep by 60 millimeters. The holes should be drilled 40mm from the back and front edges so as not to mark each time, it is best to use a template. In the process of drilling the end face of the part, the tool should be held strictly perpendicular to the plane being machined. If the drill wobbles in one of the sides, then the part will be hopelessly damaged, as the laminate will break out from one of the sides.

Construction installation

It will be very convenient to use such wooden ones with your own hands; you can do them without resorting to outside help. At the next stage, you can proceed to the installation, for this, the shelves with sidewalls are pulled together with confirmations until you can get a cube. Hardboard should be nailed with nails to maintain right angles. You can check how correct the geometry is by measuring the diagonals, which must be the same. Hats of confirmations must be decorated with caps white color that are sold in hardware stores. It is very convenient to use wooden shelving at home, any craftsman can do it with his own hands.

From the resulting cubes, you can arrange the structure as you like. Elements can be installed in a row horizontally or vertically, everything will depend on the availability of free space. When the rack "takes root" in a certain configuration, the elements can be twisted together with self-tapping screws 4 x 30 millimeters.

Alternative shelving option

Sometimes wooden racks are made according to a different principle, which provides for the presence of a frame rigidly fixed to the wall. Work begins with the fixation of square bars with a side of 50 millimeters. Their fastening is carried out in pairs, on each pair one tier of the rack should be laid out. The step between these elements determines the height of the shelves, after which the shelves themselves are laid on them, and they are fastened. If you want to create a U-shaped rack, then first you need to pick up the same bars for the boards as in the above version. Their length may be 40 centimeters less compared to the height of the room; another shelf can be arranged on top of the rack. If necessary, the bars are installed in the center so that the shelves rest on them and do not sag under the influence of the load. The length of the span must be selected taking into account the expected load. Most often, one meter is enough.

When a wooden rack is made with your own hands, the scheme can be made by the master yourself. There is nothing difficult in this. Speaking of the above, it can be noted that jumpers should be installed on the side parts of the bars, it is on them that the shelves will rest. Their number depends on the expected number of shelves. If you fix the shelves to the jumpers, then the design will turn out to be quite strong. If necessary, it can be further strengthened, as well as form sides from the side parts of the rack, this can increase the functionality of the structure. Shelves are made of wooden boards, but if you want to use chipboard, then the plates will not be very resistant to moisture.

Conclusion

When making a rack, it is best to place shelves below that will have a greater height. This is due to the fact that things of large dimensions are more convenient to store and get from the bottom of the rack.

It often happens that due to the lack of a specific place to store things, an apartment or house begins to gradually become cluttered. In this case, a simple and practical way to solve the problem can be a rack. It will be useful not only in the pantry, as is commonly believed. With it, you can divide the room into several zones, organize tools in the garage or things on the balcony in an orderly manner.

For the manufacture of the rack does not require special knowledge and skills, expensive materials and tools. It is made quickly, and most importantly, it does not require significant cash costs, like buying a store counterpart or a new cabinet.

Necessary materials and tools

To make the simplest rack, you need to prepare the following materials and tools:

  • slats (for planks and crossbars);
  • timber;
  • shelves (you can use them as edged boards, MDF boards, chipboard, laminated boards, plywood, glass, natural wood or plastic);
  • screws and dowels;
  • screwdriver (screwdriver);
  • electric jigsaw;
  • roulette;
  • level;
  • chalk or soft pencil.
  • Shelving boards

    The material from which they will be made is selected taking into account the operating conditions of the future structure. If the rack will be in a room with high humidity(bathroom) or sudden changes in temperature, then wooden details should be treated with a special protective coating, and ferrous metal parts with a protective paint.

    If the shelves are planned to be made from chipboard or MDF, then you need to take care of cutting the material in advance. This can be done independently with a jigsaw, or sawed in a specialized store. Built-in shelves are available.

    Shelving design selection and drawing development

    To develop a correct and successful drawing, it is necessary to accurately measure the location of the future location of the rack. Here you can not do without a tape measure and a pencil (chalk). If the design is intended for storing tools or canning jars, it is better to give preference to simple forms. The height of the rack directly depends on the height of the room, your own preferences and convenience. The width of the shelves depends on the items that will be located on it. To store jars or books, a width of 25-40 cm is sufficient. If we are talking about a tool, then the width is selected in accordance with its dimensions.

    The length of the shelves also depends on what will be stored on them. If the rack is made for toys, various figurines and other souvenirs, the shelves can reach a length of 1.5 meters, if for heavy books - no more than 90 cm (otherwise deflection cannot be avoided).

    Fasteners also need to be selected taking into account the loads. Self-tapping screws can be used for decorative shelving. If the structure is attached to brick wall- self-tapping screws with a length of 52 mm are sufficient, if for concrete - the length of the fastener must be at least 89 mm.

    After measurements are taken and the issue with the design of the rack is resolved, a drawing is made. Here you do not need to be a great draftsman, it is enough to draw an approximate plan-drawing indicating the dimensions and the most optimal arrangement of the shelves.

    Stages of rack manufacturing

    Further steps for the manufacture of the rack can be divided into several stages:

  1. Base mounting
  2. Installing the box and shelves
  3. Shelving finishing

Base mounting

Before proceeding with the installation of the rack, it is necessary to mark the wall. If the rack is built along the entire height of the wall, then it is better to attach the supporting frame in the form of wooden beams to both the ceiling and the floor.

For the construction of a supporting support, a wooden beam is best suited. The key to the success of the design is a solid foundation.

Bars can be used both rectangular and square. It all depends on the size of the finished rack, the length and width of the shelves. To fix the bars and the base board, it is recommended to use 3 cm self-tapping screws.

During the installation of the structure, it is important to ensure that the bearing supports are always located vertically. Lateral cross braces will give the structure additional rigidity, which means it will make the rack more durable. It is especially important to take this into account if the structure will be subject to heavy loads.

Installing the box and shelves

When the base of the rack is ready, you can proceed to the formation of the structure box. Pre-prepared MDF, chipboard, boards or other material used is attached to the bars from the bottom, top and sides. As a result of the work, you will get a box without a back wall. If desired, you can make a rack with a back wall of fiberboard or thin plywood. It is installed last.

After mounting the box, go to the shelves. On the side walls of the box on the inside, marks are made indicating the location of future shelves. Shelves can be fixed with self-tapping screws, metal corners or other selected fastening systems. If the rack is made with the expectation of a large load, then it is better to use metal corners. From above, transverse bars are attached to them, on which the shelves will rest. It is important to remember: the length of the screws that connect the shelf to the beam should be 4-6 mm longer than the thickness of the shelf.

The greatest load falls on the middle shelf, so it should be made especially strong. For best results, use a level when installing shelves. Recently, racks with asymmetrically arranged shelves have become popular.

Shelving finishing

If the rack was made of chipboard boards or MDF, then for greater aesthetics and giving the structure a finished look, you should stick a melamine edge on all ends of the parts. This is done using a conventional iron. The edge is placed on the end pre-treated with fine-grained sandpaper and smoothed with a hot iron. The excess edges of the edge are trimmed with a clerical knife.

If desired, some shelves can be closed with doors. This will add originality to the rack. Or you can even make a whole

The owners of small apartments often have a thought, but is it possible to use the balcony as a warehouse for necessary and not very items?

Certainly. If you make a convenient rack, for example, for a balcony, where you can store tools and other things that are unnecessary in the apartment. Wooden shelves for the balcony can be ordered from specialists, or you can make a rack with your own hands. It will not be difficult and, of course, it will come out cheaper.

Racks can be made:

  • from a metal profile and chipboard boards;
  • wooden beam and plywood;
  • boards and chipboard;
  • bars, with drywall shelves;
  • in other variations.

A do-it-yourself rack, if it is wooden, will require the purchase of pine boards, the width of which can be from 240 mm and the thickness from 200 mm. They should be even, dry and smoothly planed. You will also need self-tapping screws and metal corners to fasten the shelves.

PVA glue is useful for gluing wood. And when you paint the rack (if it is for a balcony), then it will be more profitable to do the painting yourself. You will have to purchase PF-115 enamel for outdoor work. But you can also buy stain and alkyd varnish.

What tools will be required

  • saw or jigsaw;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • square, tape measure, sandpaper;
  • paint brush.

Self-tapping screws and screws for fastening

As you can see: the material for wooden shelving will be inexpensive, and simple carpentry tools can be found in any home.

How will we do

Let's get acquainted with the construction of wood. As you can see, it consists of three standard elements, installed one above the other. Thus, you can improvise and make a rack, preferably wooden, of any height and width.

Dimensions can be calculated by arbitrarily changing the dimensions of the shelf, and the number of racks. We will connect them together with self-tapping screws and metal corners. For greater stability, we can additionally attach the shelves with corners to the balcony wall.

It should be noted that the length of the shelves should not exceed 80 cm, so that the shelves do not sag. If you want to make the length longer, then insert reinforcing supports from the boards in the middle of the rack, fixing them from above and below with self-tapping screws.

First, mark out all the elements on the boards using a square. Carefully cut the boards to size and assemble them by gluing the PVA joints and screwing in the screws. Each structure should consist of a carrier shelf and two supports in the shape of the letter "L". For strength, you need to strengthen the rack, if it is wooden. It can be supplemented at the bottom for strength with its metal corners.

Below are possible options making such shelving on the balcony with your own hands.

We will need:

  • pine planed timber 50 to 50;
  • boards (any thickness, depending on the purpose of the shelves);
  • self-tapping screws, dowels, screwdriver, saw, hammer, jigsaw, tape measure, square, plumb;
  • paint, stain, varnish, brushes.

We measure the beam, saw off wooden risers and crossbars with an electric jigsaw or saw. On the floor we assemble a frame with rungs, like a ladder. We check them with a square. Fasten with screws.

We drill holes in the wall of the balcony with a perforator. Insert dowels. We attach our "ladder" to the wall and screw the screws through the bars.

We install the same “ladder” No. 2 near the window, with the difference that this design should rest against the ceiling in length. We drill holes on the ceiling with a puncher and strengthen two parallel bars to which the “ladder” will be attached.

We align the “ladder” with a plumb line and, holding it with our hands, fasten it with self-tapping screws to the beams on the ceiling. On the resulting crossbars, we nail the shelves from the boards.

The resulting structures are painted with paint, or stain. Open with varnish if necessary.

Those who love durability will love metal shelving, which is perhaps only suitable for a balcony. They can also be designed and made with your own hands. It will be a little more difficult than wooden ones, but it is quite possible. How many pipes you need, you can calculate yourself according to the size of your loggia.

For manufacturing you will need:

  • metal pipes square section for racks 20 by 50 mm;
  • corner for the frame of shelves 15 to 25;
  • welding machine, electrodes;
  • pine board, 20 mm thick and 240 mm wide;
  • saw for wood, grinder, tape measure, level;
  • enamel PF-115 - one can and a brush.

If you don’t have an apparatus, or don’t know how to use it, then you can order individual parts from a welder to make a rack for a balcony. And on the bolts it will not be difficult to assemble it with your skillful hands at home.

Sequence of work

Let's mark all the elements on the profile and the corner with chalk. We cut with a grinder. Then we weld the side racks with the machine, checking their level so that our rack, which is intended for the balcony, does not warp. Then from the corner we weld a quadrangular frame for each shelf.

After that, on the side racks of the structure, we make marks for the shelves with chalk, applying a level horizontally with our hands.

We weld the frame of the shelves. After that, we cut the boards to the size of the shelves. It is better to lay the boards across, so it will be better for the strength of the shelves. Then we drill holes around the perimeter of the frame, and fasten the boards with self-tapping screws.

At the end, with our skillful hands, we paint the rack, which we have for the balcony, with PF enamel and leave it to dry.

I repeat that the racks can be made by specialists, and assembled by hand at home, with the help of bolts. It will be easier and will allow you to save a little on your budget.

Now, after getting acquainted with the process of making shelving, we know that it is not at all difficult to make them on our own.

When there are so many things that there is nowhere to put them, the task of creating additional storage space arises, and the rack is perfect for this.

  • it is easy to make, it will cost inexpensively;
  • any materials can be used;
  • you can think over the design so that it does not take up much space;
  • its height will allow you to use the space up to the ceiling.

Shelving is suitable for any interior and can fit anywhere in the house. The design itself implies a significant degree of freedom in the choice of material and forms - it can be made for any interior, from the corridor to the living room.

Natural shelving eco-friendly material can be used in the nursery, in the kitchen. With the help of a rack, you can quickly put things in order in any cluttered room.

The rack can also be used in the kitchen to free the kitchen table from unnecessary items.

The design of the rack is extremely simple - it is a frame on which shelves are fixed at different heights. For added stability, it is attached to the wall.

For the rational use of space, hanging racks are suitable - top part the wall is often left unoccupied, it can be used to place things.

Despite the huge volume they hold, they do not clutter up the space, maintaining a feeling of air and spaciousness, especially for shelving without back walls. For storage of stocks, you can choose just this type of shelving. They can be arranged so that the approach is from any direction. They are also suitable for a garage or pantry.

Graceful creations made of wood and chipboard with partitions, drawers and lower closed shelves will be an excellent addition to the interior of a living room, bedroom, or your own office.

The rack can be used for zoning the room, while it will help maintain order. The absence of a back wall will make the division of zones weightless.

The rack can be placed on furniture wheels, and if desired, moved, changing the space, or used as a static partition.

Most often, racks are used to store books, and such a rack can stand anywhere, even occupy non-functional space in the corridor.

Despite the numerous advantages of solid bookcases, racks are very popular, and the low cost only reinforces their advantage.

Small shelving fits perfectly into the hallway, regardless of its size. Umbrellas, shoes, gloves and keys get their permanent places, and are in sight and at hand.

The rack installed in the kitchen saves space significantly, because you can place hanging, hanging products by placing utensils on them according to the frequency of use.

In the living room, a beautifully executed rack can replace a bulky wall; everything will fit on it, from a TV to books and trifles.

If you make several shelves with doors, then it will be possible to arrange bottles of wine, glasses, dishes for receiving guests.

Development of a model for self-production

To begin with, the idea of the rack must be depicted in the drawing. To do this, the space that is allocated for it must be measured and plotted on graph paper on a scale. Then the shelves are drawn, with reference to the actual size and taking into account what will be stored on the rack.

If heavy things will be placed on it, for example, spare parts or tools, you should not make the shelves too long so that they do not sag over time. Their length should not exceed 1 meter, while they can be additionally reinforced with a metal profile.

If the rack is installed from wall to wall, then you need to decide which design to choose:

  • a static version from wall to wall is possible, with shelves fixed directly to the walls. This solution has several drawbacks, and the gain in space is small;
  • it is better to make an autonomous structure, then, if necessary, it can be moved. In this case, the drawing leaves a margin of at least 15 cm to the wall, maybe even a little more, so that it can be placed and moved if necessary.

Even if there are things with low weight on the shelves, they should not be made longer than 1.5 m, otherwise they will begin to sag.

The shelves themselves should not be too deep so that all things can be easily reached. In general, the presence of several rows on the shelves very quickly becomes tiring, especially when you have to put everything out to find what you need. Therefore, the depth of the shelves should not exceed half a meter.

The height of the shelves is also worth considering separately. It can range from 30-40 cm to 50-60 cm. This value depends on the dimensions of things, you must immediately plan what and where it will stand. Shelf height should be at least 7-10 cm above the tallest item that will be placed on the shelf, then it will be convenient to get it.

The simplest rack is suitable for a garage or pantry, if the product will stand in the rooms, you should consider a more elegant design solution - finishing, configuration, decorative details.

All calculations should be schematically reflected on a scale grid in compliance with proportions. Then simply measure the dimensions of the components, make an approximate layout of the material and get to work.

Below is an assembly diagram of the simplest rack, the main details of which are - support frames and shelves.

Material selection

Most available material- wood, it is inexpensive, it can be easily bought. In addition, its processing requires minimal skills - if the rack is the first product, then making it from wood guarantees success even if there are errors.

For a simple model, you need to choose a 5X5 planed timber and boards for shelves. Shelves can also be made from sheet material: chipboard, plywood.

Metal works well too, but working with metal requires some skills, for example, you will have to master drilling a hole in metal. Metal products have increased strength, durability, and are well suited for high-tech interiors. You can combine a reinforced frame with wooden shelves, which will be carefully processed - this product can be done elegantly.

Instrument preparation

To do the job, you will need the following tools:

  • construction pencil (a regular one with a soft lead is also suitable);
  • tape measure (preferably with millimeters, or at least with half-centimeter marks);
  • jigsaw;
  • drill (drills with a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the screws and a drill with a diameter slightly larger than the screw head);
  • grinder with nozzles or rings with different grains;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • crosshead screwdriver;
  • a hammer;
  • a set of skins with different grains.

You also need to buy brackets for fixing shelves or metal corners.

To process wood, you need to buy special liquids, for example, with fire and bioprotective properties, stains of the desired shade, varnishes. Varnishes can be purchased immediately with the desired shade, there are also colored ones: green, blue, etc.

Part preparation

First, in accordance with the drawing, mark the main parts of the product on the material, carefully measure everything down to the millimeter.

After they are cut, they should be processed:

Grind with a grinder, changing the nozzles from coarse and medium grain to fine. When buying material, it is better to choose planed boards, then finishing work will take less time. When sanding, you should pay attention to the sides and especially to the cuts - you need to make them smooth.

Soak the prepared parts with an antiseptic or stain, dry well.

Shelving assembly

The steps for assembling the rack look something like this:

Then the parts are combined on the floor and fastened with self-tapping screws.

  • The boards must be cut to the intended length of the shelves. You can screw each one separately, you can first assemble the shelves on the transverse bars (1-2), then install the already assembled shelves;
  • The installed longitudinal bars will increase the reliability of the shelves and fasten the rack frames together;
  • If the material is sheet, the task is simplified - they are cut out entirely;
  • After assembly, the product should be sanded again and processed, coated with paint.

Shelving options

The easiest way to get a new piece of furniture is to buy a prefabricated kit.

The advantages of this solution to the problem are obvious:

All parts are already professionally processed, metal parts are made of stainless steel, galvanized or coated with anti-corrosion agents, wooden parts are also fully prepared for assembly.

In most models, the variability of the heights of the shelves is provided - they can be rearranged without any additional steps.

  • Metal racks have special strength, the plasticity of the material will make it possible to make a whole system around the perimeter of the room and store objects of any weight on it, from wheels from a car to stocks and conservation;
  • The traditional material - wood - will never lose its relevance. Eco-friendly, durable, easy to process, allows you to realize any idea. Depending on the design, it has some restrictions on the weight of things; it is less durable than iron.

Do-it-yourself shelving will not only save a substantial amount, but also transform the space of the house. It's worth trying once own subject furniture and load it with things, there will be a desire to do something else.

Even if the hands are not very skillful, they will be able to make a rack after watching this video. When viewing, you should pay special attention to the processing of parts and how they are connected.
