How to do-it-yourself gutter step by step instructions. The sequence of installation of gutters - installation step by step. Bracket mounting methods

Such an important architectural element of the roof structure, which is the drainage system, must be thought out at the design stage. Moreover, modern SNiP recommend installing the system even before installing the roof covering. However, in reality, not everything is so smooth.

Sometimes circumstances force you to install a gutter system if the roof is already ready. Accordingly, it will not be superfluous to learn how to install gutters if the roof is already covered.

In what cases the drain is installed during finishing work

There are several situations when such an installation is necessary:

The installation of gutters on the roof directly to the frontal board can be provided for by the project itself, if air flows for ventilation of the internal space come through the sheathing of the overhangs from perforated spotlights. This method of ventilation is the most affordable both in terms of performance and cost. However, it is not possible to ensure sufficient air flow. Therefore, to increase the efficiency of ventilation, gutters are mounted on wind boards on the roof.

Roof gutters are forced to fasten along the eaves of the finished roof, also in the case of buying an unfinished house, when the installation of gutters was not provided for by the former owner in advance.

  • The use of anti-condensate waterproofing film has its own characteristics. According to the technology, waterproofing is brought to the overhang of the cornice, and this becomes possible only when the roof gutters are attached directly to the wind board.
  • The most common reason is perhaps the replacement of a physically obsolete old system that is not able to properly cope with its functions.

How to install a gutter after the roof is completed: popular installation methods

Attachment to rafters

If the roof has already been laid, for example, when a drain that has become unusable must be replaced with new system, brackets, as a rule, are planned to be fixed in this way. In the beginning, it is necessary to remove the initial row of roofing. To do this, you will have to unscrew the fasteners in this row, then in the next row of roofing. True, this may not always be convenient, and in some cases even impossible - not every material can be dismantled without violating its integrity or without deforming it, especially if the coating is fixed with nails.

Advice Experienced roofers often resort to cunning trick. In order not to wrinkle the roofing, special boards are placed under it. Then they begin to unscrew the fasteners with pliers.
Easiest to work with soft roof, which is laid on a continuous crate of plywood.

The lower edge of the roof covering, which runs along the eaves, is carefully lifted and the brackets begin to be placed on the base.

They are fixed on self-tapping screws by screwing the fasteners through the plywood base into the rafter legs.

  • Further flexible tiles or the roofing material is returned to its place and fixed to the crate using bituminous mastic.

The likelihood of problems is quite high when working with slate. Nevertheless, in this case, you can do something like this with this material. pre-shape wooden blocks, repeating the profile of the wave, and insert them directly into the waves of the slate sheet. Fasteners for the drain go straight through the sheet material - simultaneously through the bar and the holder.

Roofing made of rigid material should be dismantled carefully. This recommendation is especially important when working with an old coating. Roofing sheets that have been used for more than one year can be easily damaged, which will entail additional costs.

side mount bracket

You can also try another option for fixing the hooks to the rafters. The brackets are fixed to the side edge of the rafter. The mounting surface of the holders is bent into a plane horizontally (this operation can also be performed independently). This type of installation is possible only when the cross section of the rafters is large enough, for example, 12 or 15 * 5 cm. When fixing the brackets, it is important to take into account that the roof covering should cover the gutter by half or a third of its width. Then you can not be afraid that as a result of heavy precipitation, water will overflow over the edges of the gutter.

Important Obviously, when mounting the brackets on the side edge of the rafter, a preliminary fitting is required. In the process of fitting, it will just become clear whether such an installation option is possible.

Frontal board - a solid foundation

On a note

It can be easily decorated, and the board will look like an independent detail of the roof exterior.

Long holders are used if the wind board has a sufficiently large width. Such brackets are made of metal, and the leg of the holder and the hook have the same width. Fixation to the board is carried out through the holes provided on the mounting platform, which is located on the leg.

Short brackets can be used not only when mounting on a windboard, like long ones, but also walls and rafter ends. True, at the same time, the reliability of the fastening is questionable, since the fasteners are located along the wood fibers.

For metal roofs pick up short hooks made of the same material. It is also desirable to fix them on metal. The light weight of PVC gutters allows you to fix them to a wooden windboard without any difficulties.

Special mention is made of adjustable brackets equipped with a special device. It shifts one part of the bracket relative to the other, setting the slope of the holder location, that is, the angle that forms the hook and the base for the fasteners. To get the desired angle, just tighten the adjustment screws. Such brackets are almost indispensable for use in difficult conditions, for example, if the windboard is tilted.

When installing individual holders, to begin with, a straight line is beaten off on the windboard, observing the slope within three to five mm / linear. m. in the direction drain funnel. Stepping back from the edge of the end part of the wind board (the indent is approximately 50 - 100 mm), mark the place of fixation of the first bracket. After that, on the entire line, the installation locations of the holders are marked with a step of no more than 0.6 m (in some cases, even a larger step is acceptable, which is necessarily noted in the instructions). Having completed the markup, proceed to the installation of brackets.

A sufficient width of the roof overhang allows the use of another, very convenient option for installing gutters. Special short holders are fixed on a common metal guide profile. The latter, in turn, is fixed either on the wall of the house or on the wind board through the special holes provided on it. When fastening, the guide is immediately given the required slope. Thus, when installing the holders, there is no need to measure their place in height.

After that, brackets are threaded from its side and advanced along the guide, placing them with the required step. It is noteworthy that such holders do not need to be fixed, since they “sit” quite firmly in the profile. Undoubtedly, this is another advantage of such a mounting system.

"Crutches" as a basis

Fastening on the edge of the roof
This method is justified when fixing the drainage system from the roofs along its eaves. This option is suitable for almost any roofing material. The brackets are fastened using clamps (as special clamps are called).
If the system is fixed to the wave material, then the holders are attached either to the lower or the upper point of its wave. At the same time, it is desirable to lay rubber gaskets under the legs of the metal clamps on both sides of the roofing sheet. Thus, two tasks can be solved at once: slightly reduce the load and soften the compression on the sheet.

Additional brackets

When using the above option for installing gutters, you can also use short hooks, but with one condition. In addition to them, L-shaped metal brackets are needed. Their long part is fixed on the side edge of the rafter. As for the curved shelf with a mounting platform on short parts, a short PVC holder is fixed on it. It is worth noting that in some cases this is the only way to fix the holders on the previously laid roof without damaging it. For example, if the roof protrudes beyond the ends of the rafters on the cornice overhang of about 12–15 cm.

invisible brackets

The construction market also offers brackets that hold the gutter from above, in contrast to the traditional version from below. They are completely invisible once installed. Such holders are mounted at a distance of 400 - 700 mm between them. If this condition is violated, there is a high probability of significant deformation of the gutter, caused by the impact of a significant load of the gravity of ice or snow.

Brackets that are used when installing to the crate, or from above to the rafters, must first be bent. The holder is thus given the desired shape, which subsequently allows it to be perfectly adjusted to the slope of the ramp.

Pull-up mount

Hanging mount is less popular than the above options. However, in some cases, such a construction is the only possible way. This type of bracket has special bends. During installation, one of them is put on the front edge of the gutter, while the second is hooked to the back. The holder is equipped with a sleeve having an internal thread. The fastener is screwed into the wall or windboard through the bushing and the upper section of the gutter wall.

How to properly install roof gutters: other possible ways

Mansard-type roof brackets can be fixed directly to the walls after careful measurements and subsequent marking.

On a filing of soffits of the required width, the brackets are fixed to L-shaped metal profiles, which are screwed to the sheathing of soffits.

In the absence of a frontal board, or if the soffit is narrow enough, special metal pins with a pointed end are used. They can be straight or L-shaped. A hole of a suitable diameter is pre-drilled in a brickwork or concrete wall and filled with concrete mortar, then a pin is driven in. After the mortar has completely set, installation of the gutters can begin.

Important required slope in the direction of the funnel of the drainage system.

One of the most important functions of the roof is to protect the attic and attic from precipitation. But, flowing along the slopes of the roof, the water inevitably passes to the walls and foundation. The result of this is the rapid destruction of the load-bearing structural elements of the building. You can avoid this action if you install roof drainage systems.

System classification

There are two features for classifying the drainage system. They directly determine the installation technology. According to the manufacturing method, drainage systems can be industrial or home-made. In the latter case, we are talking about an object of handicraft production. What is the use of this system? If a person has the appropriate ability, the drain can be beautiful and unusual.

The arrangement of a home-made system does not involve significant costs. Among other things, the user himself can select a scheme suitable for himself. Gutters are usually made of galvanized steel, so constant maintenance is required, and this is the disadvantage of the system. Among the conditional minuses is the difficulty of docking individual elements.

Factory modifications comply with all standards and necessary parameters. If necessary, you can join different elements from the supplies of the same manufacturer. Classification according to the material used implies the presence of plastic and metal models.

Plastic system

There are glue and glueless systems. In the first case, the installation is carried out using glue . Plastic gutters have the following advantages:

Components are diverse, so the drainage system can take almost any configuration. This makes it indispensable for installation on a broken roof.

Disadvantages of PVC gutters:

  • The material tends to collapse under the influence of mechanical stress. That is why this kind of system is not installed on high-rise buildings. The plastic system can only be mounted on low-rise buildings.
  • Repairability. Destroyed components cannot be restored.
  • Increased coefficient of linear expansion.
  • The need for periodic replacement of seals, which entails the assembly and disassembly of elements.

Mounting is fixed on sealing rubber bands.

The drainage system, equipped with a metal profile, has several varieties. Allocate galvanized and copper modifications. There is a galvanized variation with a polymer coating. The key difference between them is the duration of operation and cost.

The positive qualities of metal gutters are strength and reliability, the ability to withstand significant snow loads and other environmental influences. They do not support combustion. Worker temperature regime they vary from -60 to +130 degrees. Among the advantages can be noted and dimensional stability.

Metal gutters have the following disadvantages:

  • difficulty in installation;
  • small selection of colors;
  • rust formation if the protective layer is damaged;
  • significant weight of the system as a whole;
  • a small amount of components, which means that installation can only be carried out on roofs with an angle of 90 degrees.

It is difficult to answer which system is more efficient, plastic or metal. It all depends on the operating conditions and other factors. Whatever it was, the choice of system should be based on quality indicators, not price.

System installation

The installation technology of gutters includes the selection of a system, the purchase of materials and the corresponding calculations. Depending on throughput systems, there are several options for drainage. Let's say they can be designated as numbers 100/75, 125/90, 150/110, which indicates the ratio of the diameter of the pipe and gutter.

Each manufacturer has its own indicators. The configuration is also different. That is why you should not dock systems released by different companies. A variety of systems is necessary so that each person can choose the modification that suits his needs.

Gutter selection

For correct selection water drainage systems, it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the maximum level of precipitation in a particular region. After that, it is necessary to calculate the area of \u200b\u200bthe slope. This should be done not in relation to all elements, but to the largest in size. It is this size that will determine the choice of gutter.

If the building has a flat roof or a roof with a slope of less than 10 degrees, the effective surface area will be E1 = A * C. This will result in an indicator in square meters. After choosing a system, it is necessary to determine its type and calculate the amount of materials. For this purpose, drawings or diagrams of planes with dimensions are prepared. Thanks to them, it will be possible to calculate and then mounting drainage system.

Calculation of the drainage system

An important object here is the gutter. It can be rectangular or semicircular. The purpose is to collect precipitation from the roof. Its length is from 3 to 4 m. It is fixed with brackets, which are fixed in increments of 60 to 90 cm. The gutter must have a slope of at least 1 cm for every 3 m. The number of running meters is equal to the perimeter of the base. In fact, this is the length of all surfaces on which the gutters of the drainage system will be installed. It is sold by the piece in 3 and 4 running meters.

All dimensions obtained must be rounded up to the whole length of the gutter. The smaller the connection, the easier and cheaper installation. outdoor and internal corners the gutters are 90 and 135 degrees, respectively. Corner gutter is designed to change the direction of water flow. It is mounted by fastening on internal and outside corners roofs. A total of 4 outside corners and 2 inside corners are required. They should all have 90 degree angles. In the presence of sharp and obtuse corners, it is necessary to select a system in which these corners are absent.

A variety of angles can be made from a plastic gutter if you cut out a part of the product and connect the halves at the right angle. Parts must be joined using glue, that is, by cold welding.

Gutter components

Connecting elements can be from 5 to 17. It all depends on the particular installation of a single system. In most systems, the fastening of the corners is carried out directly. But there are some examples where a connector is used for this. If the installation is made with adhesive, you must use compensating and conventional connectors. The first type is installed with a roof length of more than 8 linear meters. It is mounted without the use of glue. A connector is needed to compensate for the linear expansion of cracking during cooling and heating.

Mounting hooks

These components are short and long. The latter are necessary for hanging the gutter on the rafters and are fixed before the installation of the roofing material. The former are short and are used to fix the gutter on the front board. Accordingly, it is possible to install components on a finished roof covered with roofing material. A fastening hook is installed with a gap of 60 cm. An obligatory step is the installation of funnels, plugs at the junctions and near the corners.

A downpipe is required for a vertical drain. They can be round or rectangular. Designed for vertical flow of liquid. The bracket is required for attaching the pipe to the wall. According to the method of fixation, a stone technique is distinguished, when the element is fixed on a concrete, stone or brick base, as well as installation by means of hardware. The third method involves fixing wooden walls using self-tapping screws.

Depending on quantity funnels determined by the number of pipes. If, for example, there are 4 of them, then 4 places will also be required to install pipes. In running meters, their length corresponds to the total length of all walls along which the installation is carried out. Pipes are on sale in length of 3 and 4 running meters. Rounding up is possible, as pipe joints are undesirable. That is, if your house has a height of 3.5 m, then you need to buy a pipe 4 m long. Half a meter from here will go to waste and other needs. Pipe fasteners are installed every meter. Their installation near the knee is mandatory.

Plastic gutter system

To install a PVC system, you need to mount drain funnels on the roof. Distinguish between storm, water intake and roofing systems. This is followed by mounting brackets. Gutter fasteners, which are located as close as possible to the funnel, are installed at a distance of 2 cm from it. They act as a holder. The angle of inclination with respect to the funnel is 2 degrees or 4 mm per 1 m. It is very convenient to check the inclination with a nylon thread. If the wall has a length of 10 to 20 m, it makes sense to install the gutter in the following ways:

  1. Simple method. It is also called direct. The funnel is installed at the end of the slope.
  2. Double dodge. It is carried out from the middle of one plane to the middle of another.

In the first case, the middle chute is located at the highest point. Due to this, water moves to the funnels that stand at the corners of the building. In the second case, two extreme gutters are at the highest point. For this reason, water moves to the funnel, located in the middle between them. Sometimes the length of the gutter exceeds 22 m. Three funnels and a more powerful system are installed here.

The next step is to mount gutter connectors of normal and compensation type, if necessary. The connectors are installed between the brackets at the same distance from them.

  • The gutter is placed on brackets that are adjacent to the funnel, taking into account the linear expansion of the plastic.
  • It is necessary to drill holes for the funnel in right place. To do this, use a special nozzle for a drill - a crown.

Some manufacturers mark the funnel so that installation can be simplified. That is, the temperature scale is indicated on the side. By comparing it with the temperature overboard, the chute can be set at the desired level.

The funnel is an element that does not require glue when installed. If provided, a sealing gum is placed at the place where it adjoins the gutter.

The next step is the installation of the gutter connection. When laying it, the connector must be smeared with glue or sealed with an elastic band at the junction. No adhesive is required to mount the compensation connector. In order for the water to flow in the right direction, it is better to equip the so-called teardrop at the end of the drain pipe. According to a similar scheme, the installation of corners and plugs for the gutter is carried out.

Installation of the corner and plugs is carried out using glue and sealing rubber bands. Clamps and drainpipes are fixed in the next step. The holes for fastening the clamp are drilled in the design state. Installation of the pipe is preceded by the installation of an elbow or pipe in the funnel. The use of a rubber seal or adhesive is mandatory. But they are not required for downpipes.

The pipes are fixed by means of a clamp installed in pre-drilled holes. After that, a plastic tide is installed. It must be installed so that water does not destroy the foundation of the house. You can make it so that it conducts water into the channel drainage system or in the appropriate well.

The drainage system of the house is a rather serious construction, which requires accurate calculation and competent installation, where special attention is paid to the fastening of elements. The drainage of water from the roof of the house itself consists of two sections - horizontal and vertical. The first consists of gutters (trays), which are installed along the edges of the roofing material. It is in them that water merges from the roof in the form of rain or melted snow. The second is vertical pipes connected to the trays using a funnel. Through them, water drains either into the ground away from the foundation of the house, or into storm sewer. Usually, the fastening of the drain begins before the roof is covered with roofing material.. But sometimes the installation is carried out after the roof is covered, for example, when the old drain has become unusable during long-term operation and it is replaced with a new one. In the two cases, the installation is done differently. And the difference is in the attachment.

Types of fasteners for gutters

As for the installation and fixing of the trays, brackets in the form of hooks are used for this. There are a huge number of different modifications, but they are all divided into two large groups: long and short. The first are designed to attach the drain to the roof, namely to the crate or rafter legs. The second to the frontal board. By the way, it is the latter that are used when the roof is already covered with roofing material.

Today, manufacturers of Eastern systems offer universal mounting brackets, the leg of which is two plates with a through groove. Both parts are interconnected by a bolt and a nut through a groove. That is, relative to this bolt, you can reduce or increase the length of the legs. When the required length is reached, the bolt is clamped, which leads to the fixation of the length.

Hooks with a long leg are also used for roofs already covered with roofing material. True, in this case they are attached not to the rafters or batten elements, but to the filing of the cornice overhang. This option does not fit into the recommendations for the construction of drainage systems. And the appearance of the cornice filing is clearly reduced in terms of presentability. But sometimes it's the only one rational way fix drains.

There are other fasteners for gutters of drainage systems, which are the same hook, only in their design there are other mounting elements. One of these is a bracket, the leg of which is rotated 90 ° relative to the hook. This model is usually used if the roofing material already lies on the rafter system, and it will have to be fixed to the rafter leg, or rather to its side end. Most often, this variety belongs to the "long" group. It is necessary to fasten the hook to the rafter with at least two self-tapping screws. The only requirement for this variety is that it can be used if the rafter legs have a sufficient cross section, for example, 150x50 or 120x50 mm.

Rules for fastening drainage elements

The simplest process of attaching a drainage system is associated with the installation of vertical pipes. For this, special clamps made of metal or plastic are used. A purely structural fastener for pipes is a clamp with a stand or leg. The latter are attached to the wall using self-tapping screws on plastic dowels. At the installation site of the fastener, it is necessary to drill holes with a drill or a puncher, insert dowels into them, attach a clamp and fasten it with one or two self-tapping screws. The connection is reliable.

The choice of clamps depends on how the drain will pass through the house. More often pipes are carried out directly along the wall with a snug fit to its plane. For this, short clamps are used, which are attached to the wall through a rounded plane or through a short stand. If there are protrusions in the architecture of the building, then sometimes it is necessary to carry out installation at a short distance from the surface of the walls. To do this, fasteners on the legs are used.

Attention! Fixing the drain to the wall is the easiest step in assembling the entire system. But they carry it out last, that is, after assembling the horizontal tray part.

Attachment to front board

The frontal or wind board is installed at the ends of the rafter legs. It protects the space between these roof elements from wind, dust, birds and insects. Attaching the gutter to this board is the easiest way to mount them. The board is in plain sight, the approach to it is not limited by anything, so there should be no problems.

In this case, both long and short brackets can be used to fix drains. The former are used if the board is wide enough to fit the mounting legs of the hooks. More often used short models. A practical example is shown in the photo below:

As for the “short” modifications, manufacturers today offer several positions that differ from each other in the installation bar. In this regard, plastic models are represented by a wider list than metal ones. The latter are usually standard designs made from steel strip. But there are also special metal structures on the market, which are a hook with a small stand in which there are no mounting holes. That is, the bracket itself is not attached to the frontal board. Attached to her metal tire into which they are inserted. On this rail, the hooks can be moved along the eaves, setting them at the required distance from each other.

This option is convenient in that it is easier to install the tire itself at a certain angle than to do it with each element separately. After all, the drain is a gravity flow system. So, it should be installed with an angle of inclination equal to 2–7 °. At the same time, the joint of the bracket bus is quite strong and reliable, therefore, by installing it, you can guarantee the long-term operation of the gutter system at home.

The next type of brackets differs from others in the ability to change the angle of inclination of the hook itself. The latter is connected to the stand with a pin in the form of a bolt. That is, a swivel joint is used. The angle of inclination is changed by bolted thrust elements. If it is necessary to increase the inclination of the hook, then the bolts are screwed in, pressing on the delivery. And vice versa . When changing the inclination, the hinge bolt must be loosened, after setting the angle it is tightened. This modification is used when installed on an inclined frontal board, or if the installation of the gutter system is carried out on log house.

Fastening to roofing material

Brackets for attaching gutters to roofing material have appeared on the market relatively recently. They can only be used if the roof is covered with a strong and rigid roofing material. Mounting method - on clamps (clamps), with the help of which the hooks are fixed along the edge of the roof.

Today, manufacturers offer two varieties of this bracket model:

  1. For clamps, it is necessary to drill holes in the roofing.
  2. Without drilling holes, clamping is made additionally with a screw.

Let's take a closer look at the second option for fixing gutters:

The nuances of installing gutters when using this type of hook:

  • the distance from the edge of the roofing material to the place of the jam is within 5 cm;
  • if a modification is used without drilling the roof, then it is recommended to place rubber gaskets under the supporting planes of the clamp (both from the top side and from the bottom);
  • if the installation is made to the wave material, then the installation can be carried out both to the lower waves and to the upper ones, taking into account the exact location of the clamp relative to the height of the wave;
  • it is better to give preference to plastic brackets, as they are lighter, since the load from the entire drainage system on the roofing material, together with the discharged water, will be impressive, which can lead to a break in the latter.

Combined variant

These types of fasteners for gutters are a structure consisting of two parts: a short plastic hook and a long L-shaped holder, the short part of which is rotated by 90 ° relative to the long one. Holes are drilled in the short part or a groove is made through which the hook and holder are fastened together. Holes are also made in the long part of the holder for fastening the structure to the rafter leg.

How to do this correctly is shown in the example of attaching a drain to a roof overhang:

This option is sometimes the only one. For example, if roofing extends beyond the rafter legs to a distance of 15–20 cm. Of course, you can use a clamp modification, but the roofing material does not always allow this.

Universal option

This design is a pull-up element, which is located inside the gutter. Trays in this regard are attached to it with the help of bends located on the bracket itself. One fold clings to the outer edge of the tray, the other to the inner. A bushing is installed in the fastener with internal thread. A screw is inserted into it, with which both products are attached to each other and to the wall.

This model is rarely used. But, as a fastener for trays, it belongs to the category of universal, because with its help installation can be carried out both on the frontal board, and on the wall, and on the rafter legs.

Other ways to install brackets

There are other ways to fix the gutters of the drainage system with your own hands. Because it is not always possible to install them along the rafters, crate or frontal board.

Mounting methodDescription
On the wallUsually this option is used for installation on mansard roof already covered with roofing material. The main task of the manufacturer of works is to accurately mark the installation site.
On spotlightsThe option is not the best, but sometimes the only one. The main thing is that there must be a certain width of the spotlights, corresponding to the length of the holder. Often combined designs are used here.
On metal pinsThis option is used in two cases: if there is no frontal board in the roof structure, the width of the soffit or filing of the cornice overhang is too narrow.

The last installation option is simple and has several options. If gutters are installed on wooden house, then the metal pins (with one sharp end) are simply driven into the wood. If the house is brick or concrete, then first holes are drilled in the wall with a perforator to the required depth, where the cement-sand mixture is placed, and only then the pin is hammered. Installation of gutters can only be carried out after the fastening solution has completely dried..

The nuances of fastening elements of the drain

  1. The slope angle of the gutters is 3–7°.
  2. The distance between the fasteners of the gutters is 50–60 cm.
  3. The distance between the clamps of the drain pipes is 1.8-2.0 m. If the installation height exceeds 10 m, then the mounting step of the clamps is reduced to 1.5 m.

Conclusion

Before you fix the gutters with your own hands, you need to accurately carry out all the installation measurements and decide on the types of brackets. Choosing one or another installation option, you solve the issue of not only saving money, but also the strength of the entire structure.

Drainage of waste water from the roof is a mandatory task to ensure the longevity of the roof. For this, a roof drainage system is installed. You can do the work yourself or involve specialists for this purpose.

Atmospheric precipitation accumulates on the surface of the roof, which causes its destruction over time. This is especially true for buildings with a shed or flat roof. Of course, you can initially build truss system at a certain angle, due to which the drains will natural way removed from the surface of the house. But then the foundation may be washed away, due to a strong flow of water from the roof.

Benefits of using a gutter:

  1. Increasing the efficiency of roof self-cleaning. At correct installation, regardless of the coating material, maximum liquid drainage is ensured;
  2. Protection of the building from undermining. You can direct the drain pipes to the drain or to the garden in the country, which will help protect the foundation of the building;
  3. Extending the durability of metal and bituminous roofs. Regardless of the coating material, it is destroyed by prolonged exposure to moisture.

The quality of the coating does not depend on the material used. The fact is that under certain conditions it is necessary to use the Modern metal profile (with a large number Wastewater), and in some - plastic (if you live in regions with sharp temperature changes). Sometimes sandwich panels are also used.

Construction and materials

Depending on the type of drainage system chosen, the system may consist of various additional elements. Main details:

  1. Gutters;
  2. funnels;
  3. Branches and plugs;
  4. fasteners;
  5. Couplings.

Photo - design of the drainage system

Each of these details has its purpose. Guide pipes are necessary to ensure the drainage of water to a specific place on the site and the intake excess fluid from the roof. Galvanized metal and PVC are used for gutters. Funnels complement the main pipes, they are necessary to create a certain angle on the roof, with which the maximum amount of liquid will fall into the gutter.

According to SNiP, for a complex roof, it is imperative to use various bends and tees. They will help to create the most effective method of water intake from the roof surface. Installation of the entire system is carried out using brackets, self-tapping screws and other fasteners.

Video: how to install gutters yourself

Gutter installation

Before starting work, you need to calculate how much water you need to drain from the roof. Please note that this indicator does not affect the installation process itself, but is necessary when choosing a specific ready-made drainage system (Hunter, Galeco and others).

Step-by-step instruction how to make a do-it-yourself installation of a storm drainage system:

  1. Brackets are installed first. Mounts are installed on the front board. To ensure that all hooks are located at the desired level, we recommend that after installing the first one, stretch the thread. According to the rules of SNiP, the minimum distance from the lowest rail should be no more than 25 mm;
  2. The mounting technology of the fasteners necessarily includes taking into account the slope of the entire system. For every 10 meters, you need to tilt up to 5 cm. It turns out, after installing the bracket, determine the mounting location for the next part and mount it 5 cm lower than the previous one;
  3. Bracket installer recommendations:
    • Be sure to observe the average selected distance. During the rainy or thaw season, a large amount of water will pass through the drain, so it is important that it is as rigidly fixed as possible;
    • On average, the hook pitch is no more than half a meter;
    • The general slope should be done gradually, without sudden transitions.
  4. Further, in the places where the pipes are installed, water intake funnels must be mounted. They are rectangular and round section. There is different ways their installation. For example, for plastic construction special glue is used, and for metal - clamps;

  5. In the receiving gutters, it is imperative to install a grate that will help protect the drains from dirt, fallen leaves and other debris;
  6. It remains to connect the gutters and brackets. Pipes are threaded into fasteners using grooved holes. There are such in TechnoNIKOL systems. It is necessary to clamp the pipe until it clicks;

  7. For galvanized steel and PVC siding (Plastmo, Murol) rubber plugs should be used. These details will help ensure the right job systems. They are put on at the very end of the gutter;

  8. The guide for builders states that it is necessary to fix the gutter after installing the gutter between them. This will require special couplings and seals that will increase the efficiency and rigidity of the system;

    Photo - clamps

  9. After that, drain knees are attached to the panels. These parts of the outlet will help ensure that water drains from the roof at a certain angle and connect the various parts of the system together. The rules for their installation state that the distance between the pipe and the wall should be no more than 35 mm;

    Photo - knee

  10. Next, the schema is fixed as a constructor. To the very bottom of the system, the knees are threaded into each other and strengthened with clamps. If you use a metal profile (Ruflex, Alta-Profile or Rainway), then you must additionally install brackets to increase the rigidity of the drain;
  11. It should be noted that the clamps for mounting the drain on the wall of the house differ from the standard ones. They can be attached to bricks or foam blocks with dowels and self-tapping screws;
  12. The last step for installing a gutter system for a slate or tile roof is the installation of a drip. It represents the knee turned to the other side. In order not to have to dismantle afterwards, you need to calculate in advance the distance of the edge of the drain to the drain. 30-35 cm is considered optimal.

Tips from professionals for plumbing installation:

  1. Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare the surface. Treat the boards with antiseptics and varnishes to extend their durability;
  2. If the roof requires repair, then before installing the gutter system, you need to finish it. Otherwise, a leaking roof will negatively affect the efficiency of the drain;
  3. If you cannot cope with the task on your own, you can turn to specialists for help. Calling a brigade will cost about 10,000 rubles per object.

Price overview

There are a wide variety of drains on the market today. The Bryza (Breeze), Braas, Docke, Icopal Wijo TBS system (with additional insulation) and others are very popular. Their advantage is durability, as well as the fact that they can be installed on shingles, slate, metal profile and even provide a drain on the balcony.

Consider what is the price for installing a drainage system in different cities (the cost is indicated for Ruukki 125 mm pipes):

Prices may vary depending on the required diameter of the gutters. The total estimate can also be reduced by using non-professional brackets and couplings.

It is advisable to plan the drainage system and the drainage of rainwater from the foundation when the construction of the roof has not yet been completed. This approach will allow you to choose optimal system by type of fastening, material of manufacture and cost. The main question that arises during installation: how to fix the drain to the roof? It is necessary to fix the horizontal lines so that the water flows freely, and the gutters do not deform in the heat and do not sag under load during the melting of snow.

Drainage systems from different materials differ not only in cost and appearance. Gutters made of polymer and metal have different weights, performance characteristics, respectively, require strict adherence to installation rules. Properly fixed gutter tray can serve for decades without breakdowns and repairs. The main materials from which the parts of gutters of the middle price category are made are plastic and metal in a polymeric protective coating. Exclusive systems made of copper and aluminum are installed less often, installation is carried out only by professionals.

Plastic systems

Low price, light weight, ease of assembly and installation are the main advantages of plastic systems. If you know how to properly fix the drain, then the installation can be done by hand. Not required for assembly professional tools, lightweight structures can be lifted and fixed independently.

Prefabricated gutters are installed on hooks that are attached directly to the gable (frontal) board or its lining. Given the light weight of products, fasteners are made of plastic. To prevent the polymer tray from deforming under the weight of snow, the step between the hooks is reduced to a minimum of 50 cm.

Attaching the plastic gutter to hooks

Disadvantages of plastic systems:

  • When installed in cold regions, additional heating is required in winter period- electrical cables are fixed in the gutters.
  • Brittleness: under increased loads (temperature changes, heavy snowfall, convergence of the ice crust), the material cracks.
  • fragility.

Metal-plastic and steel gutters

Polymer-coated steel structures are durable and reliable. The gutters withstand loads of ice and snow without damage. Systems are installed in any climatic conditions.

steel structure: roof mount

Factory parts are covered with a protective film: during installation, care must be taken that the top layer does not peel off to prevent water from entering the metal base. Products are installed in several ways:

  • Gutters are mounted on both adjustable and rigid non-adjustable brackets.
  • It can be installed on a gable board, flooring, or directly on the rafters.

The choice of connection technique depends on the readiness of the roof and the ability to fix the hooks under the roof finish.

Footage and number of parts for the gutter

A preliminary calculation of the number of fastening hooks, connectors, elbows, the footage of pipes and gutters is carried out on the roof scheme. The total perimeter of the roof with the addition of 10% margin is the approximate footage of the gutters. Pipe footage - the height from the connection point with the gutter to the lowest point, multiplied by the planned number of drains.

Factory trays are produced in a standard size - in segments of 3 m. They are joined so that one horizontal line contains solid gutters with 1 section cut to the planned length.

The main elements of horizontal lines:

  • Gutters. Each separate section is equipped with 2 side plugs.
  • Connectors. Plates with seals join the sections of the trays to each other. Strengthen the joints with a special sealant.
  • Brackets. The number of hooks is calculated by the total footage of horizontal sections multiplied by 2: provided that the drains will be fixed on hooks in 50 cm increments.

At the junction points of horizontal and vertical lines, funnels are installed to drain water from the tray into the pipe. The number of funnels is equal to the number of drainpipes.

How to properly fix the gutter on the roof: instructions

First of all, it is necessary to prepare tools and a set of parts for assembling the horizontal part of the system. Experts will help you choose the type of fasteners. Depending on the planned method of fastening and the material of manufacture of the trays, you will be offered brackets with height adjustment or with a special extension for mounting on rafters. Buy a few spare parts in case there is an error in the calculations or the connector breaks, deforms during installation.

Fixing a plastic drain to the roof

Preparation: tools for work

Gutter fixing tools

To securely fix the drain, you will need simple tools:

  • Roulette, pencil and coated cord (thread) for marking the board.
  • Hacksaw (if the parts are plastic), scissors for working with metal (when choosing metal-polymer parts).
  • Screwdriver or cordless drill with nozzles.
  • Hardware - self-tapping screws or bolts, studs with nuts. It is advisable to choose fasteners made of stainless materials.

General rules for installing gutters

Regardless of the chosen method, how they plan to mount the brackets for gutters, there are general rules mounting parts to follow:

  • The length of the horizontal line assigned to one pipe should not exceed 12 m. If the specified value is exceeded, the inner diameter of the pipe simply cannot cope with a large volume of water. When the length of the roof slope is more than 12 meters, it is necessary to plan the installation of 2 funnels.

Planning for funnel installation points and inclination of gutters

  • Gutter angle. Be sure to install horizontal lines with an inclination towards the pipe. Offset from the extreme point - up to 3 mm per meter. The slope will provide an accelerated flow and prevent overflow in the event of heavy rain.

Fastening methods and distance between hooks

  • The pitch between the fastening hooks depends on the gutter material. For plastic lines, brackets are attached to the roof every 50 - 60 cm. Maximum - after 75 cm. When installing metal-plastic or all-metal structures, the distance between the hooks can be increased to 90 cm.
  • The gutters are fixed at some distance from the board or wall. If we draw a conditional straight line that continues the line of the roof slope, then the distance from this line to the upper edge of the gutter should be 2 - 2.5 cm.

  • The edge of the roof should be above the conditional center of the tray or offset to the inner edge.
  • If possible, a drip outlet is attached under the roofing with a stop at the gutter - to remove condensate.

Installing short brackets on the gable board

How to attach a plastic gutter to a gable board

On the finished roof with your own hands, it is easier to fix the drain on the frontal board. Mounting pattern using short brackets suitable for installation plastic products. Screws are selected that are suitable in diameter for the hook holes. The system is outdoors, so stainless steel screws are chosen.

Plastic short non-adjustable hook

Proceed to marking the line of attachment. Calculate slope. An easy way to make a correct slope without error:

  • Retreat from the edge of the roof and put a point at the point of attachment of the extreme hooks.
  • The place of fastening of the last bracket is shifted horizontally down: the length of the slope is multiplied by 3. The resulting value in millimeters is the height difference between the extreme fasteners. If the line length is 10 m, then the offset is a maximum of 3 cm. The installation line is beaten off with a thread.

Hooks are attached along the line

  • The brackets are fixed, observing the rules of the protrusion and the distance to the hanging edge of the roof.
  • Measure the distance between the fixed brackets. Calculate the number and distance between intermediate hooks. Mark attachment points.
  • Fix the brackets.

After installing all the holders, check the correctness of the slope. Collect and install a horizontal branch. Mount the plugs along the edges on the sealant. Straight segments are joined by connecting plates with rubber seals. Apply 3 lines of sealant: in the center of the plate and along the edges. They press against the groove. Between the edges of the segments leave a gap of up to 5 mm.

Docking gutters in a horizontal line

At the points of the planned connection to the downpipe, a hole is cut out for the funnel. Install the item.

Adjustable hooks and brackets with extensions: deck and rafter mounting

When installing gutters on the roof at the construction stage, one of two options is chosen: on rafters, if the distance between the parts does not exceed 1 m; or on the flooring - a continuous coating or boards.

Installation of brackets on the roof deck

Use adjustable brackets:

  • With straight extension.

  • With extension and height adjustment mechanism.

Hook with height adjustment

When choosing hooks with extensions, there is an easy way to get the right angle. The required number of brackets is laid out in one line right next to each other. A mark is placed at the fold of the first element. Draw a straight line to the end of the last part. The calculated difference (slope of the drain) is marked upward from the point on the extreme element. Connect the point to the mark on the first hook. The resulting line is the bending points of the brackets. Items must be numbered.

Hooks are attached to the flooring or rafters, bent according to the markings. building level check the angle of the hook. It is necessary to bend the bracket bar so that the chute installed in the mounts is in a strictly horizontal position, without kinks.

When using brackets with adjustment, the installation is carried out in a straight horizontal line. At the bottom of the brackets, the slope level is marked, each element is adjusted by the mechanism until a flat inclined line is reached.

Installing gutters on lining or siding

Difficult question: how to fix the drain to the installed siding or lining? There are 3 solutions:

  • Remove the trim from the gable board. Simple short hooks are used, which are fastened with long screws. A washer or a dense rubber gasket is installed between the board and the hook so that the lining can be freely installed.

Hooks on the board under the siding

  • Insert the hooks through the decorative trim. You will need a drill and long screws. Drill holes in the lining slightly larger than the diameter of the fastener. Screw fasteners into the base under the siding. Use short hooks.

Short brackets with fastening over the lining

  • Install adjustable brackets under the roof sheathing - no need to remove the siding.

Fixing the gutter on the brackets

To fix the tray in the brackets, manufacturers complete the products with special groove joints or mechanical latches.

The tray is combined with the protrusions of the brackets

To fix the drain, a gutter is inserted into the hooks at an angle. After aligning the protrusion of the bracket with the groove on the edge of the tray, the gutter is rotated 90 ° until it is in the correct position.

Connection with funnels is carried out in a locking way. If the instructions provide for additional sealing, a sealant is applied along the edge of the hole for the funnel. Align the hole in the tray with the hole in the funnel and tighten the lock until it clicks.

Try to plan the drainage of rainwater from the roof so that at the same time the installation of the gutter with roofing works. There will be no need to independently install the brackets at dangerous heights. With your own hands, installing a drain on an outbuilding, a bathhouse or a garage is not a problem. If skills construction works no, prefer inexpensive and easy to install plastic system with short hooks.
