To install the handle-knob, it is necessary to mark on the door and make two main holes, according to the template, which, as a rule, is included with the handle with installation instructions. So, let's start installing the handle, disassembling it along the way.

Given interior door:

We make a sample hole from the end of the door leaf under the latch. Hole diameter from 23 to 25 mm: It is convenient to make a hole with a so-called spade drill for wood.

With a crown on a tree with a diameter of 50 mm, a through hole is made for the main fastening of the handle. The distance from the end of the leaf to the center of the hole is 60 or 70 mm, depending on the latch that is included in the kit.

It is very convenient to use ready-made kits for installation, which are called “kits for installing interior handles”. It is not scary (and often, on the contrary, it is useful) if the holes are made with a diameter of 1-2 mm larger than recommended. The latch mechanism is two-position: provides for the possibility of installing a knob on the door, with different widths of the first bar of the door. The standard height of the handle on the door is approximately 950 mm from the floor level. Next, to install the knob-knob, we partially disassemble the inner half of the handle in order to gain access to the holes for the mounting tie-down screws. To do this, we will use a special “key” from the handle kit or any suitable item, for example, a knitting needle. There is a special hole on the handle, through which the door knob should be disassembled. In the presented photo, it is round, but it can be of various shapes. This hole is located at the bottom of the handle:

Further assembly of the handle-knob occurs on the door in the reverse order.
First, install the latch in the door and secure with two screws from the end. It will look like this:

The rectangular front plate of the latch mechanism is mounted flush with the door leaf. To do this, marking under it, with a chisel, the required depth is selected at the end of the door leaf. The same applies to the striker of the knob, which is installed according to the markup, on the door frame. Also, under it, the required depth is sampled with a chisel.

Further, it is already possible to assemble the knob-knob on the door leaf, pulling together the disassembled halves with fixing screws. The square of the handle and bushings for the mounting screws will, during installation, pass through the previously installed latch, through its technological holes

Handles-knobs are universal and are not divided into left / right-handed. The design provides for the installation and adjustment of the knob for any door with a thickness of at least 35mm.

If the shape of the knob-knob has an asymmetrical shape of a ball, etc., then after installing the knob on the door, using the method described above, remove the knob handle, and change the outer and inner handles in places, having achieved their correct location, relative to the location of the door leaf ( left or right side). The latch or lock mechanism, if any, is also brought into the correct location, and if required, we also swap the outer and outer sides.

The handle, assembled and without distortions, installed on the door, should work easily in both directions and independently, under the action of a return spring, return to its original position. If this does not happen, then you need to check the evenness of the installation, as well as tighten or loosen the fixing screws, achieving their equal tightening and soft stroke of the knob.

For the handle, the opening is drilled with a drill and a crown. To make it even and neat, it is necessary to drill from the inside and outside of the door to a depth equal to ½ the thickness of the canvas.

The mechanism must be inserted into the opening drilled under it. Press the overlay to the end of the product and outline it with a pencil on all sides.


Then clean the canvas from the top layer with a chisel and make a recess the size of the thickness of the lining. This is done in order to push it into the door.

When selecting such a handle, the center distance between the axis of the keyhole and the handle, the width of the lining, the shape of the turnkey keyhole and the section of the profile pin of the door handle are taken into account.

Separate escutcheon handles are also used with locks that have a latch latch and a deadbolt actuated by a key. However, when selecting these handles, the center distance is not taken into account, only the size of the pads is taken into account. If a lock without a deadbolt with only a latch is used in an interior door, then it is customary to install a push handle with one rosette. In this case, the key is no longer needed.

Push button handles

Knobs are a type of push handles, often referred to as ball handles. There is no lever to press, and to act on the latch, you must turn the ball. A keyhole is usually located in the center of such a ball. The handle opens the door with a simple twist. Stationary handles

Stationary handles, unlike push models, are in no way connected with door lock. They cannot be turned or pressed, but can only be pushed away from you or pulled towards you. When opening the door with the door handle, the arm must necessarily be bent at a right angle in the elbow joint. Depending on the height of the owners, the installation height of the door handle is 80 - 120 centimeters from the floor surface. It is recommended to mark the door leaf with a square. Draw a line on one side of the door with a well-sharpened pencil, attach a square and mark on the door with an awl the height of the door handle at a distance of 60 millimeters. Continue the line on the other side of the door along the finished line and make a mark with an awl at a distance of 60 millimeters. Drilling holes in the door

To drill a larger hole for installing the handle, it is recommended to use a special drill that has a crown. To do this, take a drill, clamp the crown on the tree and drill through the door leaf on one side. Drill not through, but to a depth that is equal to half the thickness of the door, having previously looked at how to install the door handle on the video. To make it visible, you can make a mark on the crown with a marker.

Then drill a hole along the markings on the other side of the door until it is completely drilled out. With this technique, you can be sure that the crown at the exit will not spoil the back of the door and will not go to the side. Hold the drill at a 90 degree angle to the door. Do not allow the drill to deviate horizontally and vertically.

Once you've drilled the hole for the mechanism, it's time to make a hole for the handle's tongue. You can drill it with a feather drill or using a chisel. The most important thing is to control that the drill drills evenly, because only about 6 millimeters will remain at the edges. If you can remove the door, then it can be passed between the legs for easier drilling.

Door handle fixing

When all the necessary holes are prepared, you can begin to install the door handle with your own hands. First you need to take the handle for the door, attach it to the installation site and mark with an awl the points for installing the bolts on which the handle itself will be attached on both sides. To perform this operation, install the mechanism of this design in the drilled hole and screw both halves with the bolts included in the kit.

Bolts must be tightened evenly. Remember that the tightening should be such that the door handle works well and the latch easily returns to its original time. Handles in which the bolts are located under the cap, and therefore are not visible, should be disassembled by pressing the stopper on the handle with the key that comes with the door handle.

Installation of a metal frame

After you have installed a round door handle or another type of handle, you need to proceed with the installation of a metal plate. To do this, again, you need to make a markup. There are two marking methods. The first of them lies in the fact that the end of the tongue should be smeared, for example, with chalk, oil, paint or even toothpaste. Then hide the tongue in the door, close it tightly and make an open-close movement several times so that the tongue makes a mark on the door frame.

The second way is as follows: close the door, slide the ruler into the slot above the tongue and make a mark at the place where it touches the tongue, also mark the bottom of the tongue. To attach a metal frame to the box, you should mark a hole for the tongue and the plate itself. First of all, you need to make a selection under the tongue with a chisel or pen drill.

Having made a hole for the tongue, it is necessary to check whether the tongue comes out of the latch completely and whether the door closes. If everything is fine, then you can start creating a sample for the frame, which is also done using a chisel. The metal frame inserted into the sample should be at the same level with the surface of the box.

The metal frame is screwed to the box with screws. To do this, drill holes using a thin drill, then the screws will lie without distortion. After performing such manipulations, you can close the door to evaluate the result of your work. If the handles open and close easily, the latch moves freely, the door can be closed by light pressing without effort, then such a door handle installation can be called successful.

Door handle replacement procedure

It often happens that it becomes necessary to reinstall the handle on old door. The procedure for replacing fittings is somewhat different from the scheme for installing a door handle on new door, since the hole for the mechanism of the product already exists, and its dimensions should be taken into account.   1. When buying a new door handle, you should consider that it should be no smaller than the old one. Otherwise, the old hole for the mechanism will not be closed, which will spoil the whole look of the door.
