How to put a handle on a wooden door. Installing a lock on the door: how to do it yourself? To do this, we need tools to work.

In this material, we will consider with you how to disassemble the knob knob, which have received an unusual distribution on interior doors. And also along the way we learn how these handles are installed. Below you can find not only the instruction in pictures, but also watch the video.

To install the handle-knob, it is necessary to mark on the door and make two main holes, according to the template, which, as a rule, is included with the handle with installation instructions. So, let's start installing the handle, disassembling it along the way.

Given interior door:

We make a sample hole from the end of the door leaf under the latch. Hole diameter from 23 to 25 mm: It is convenient to make a hole with a so-called spade drill for wood.

With a crown on a tree with a diameter of 50 mm, a through hole is made for the main fastening of the handle. The distance from the end of the leaf to the center of the hole is 60 or 70 mm, depending on the latch that is included in the kit.

You can find a template for installing a knob-knob from some manufacturers in the form of a stencil on the inside of the box or in the attached instructions. It is very convenient to use ready-made kits for installation, which are called “kits for installing interior handles”. It is not scary (and often, on the contrary, it is useful) if the holes are made with a diameter of 1-2 mm larger than recommended. The latch mechanism is two-position: provides for the possibility of installing a knob on the door, with different widths of the first bar of the door. The removal of the center of the handle-knob from the edge of the door leaf in the standard is 60mm:

but by moving the sleeve under the square, you can set the distance to 70 mm:

The standard height of the handle on the door is approximately 950 mm from the floor level. Next, to install the knob-knob, we partially disassemble the inner half of the handle in order to gain access to the holes for the mounting tie-down screws. To do this, we will use a special “key” from the handle kit or any suitable item, for example, a knitting needle. There is a special hole on the handle, through which the door knob should be disassembled. In the presented photo, it is round, but it can be of various shapes. This hole is located at the bottom of the handle:

Through the hole we press the spring-loaded latch, while pulling out the handle of the interior knob.

We take out the handle and completely remove it:

Then you need to pry off the outer decorative flange of the handle with any sharp object. Take a closer look, as a rule, the flange has a corresponding groove for this:

well, the knob-knob is disassembled and we got access to the mounting screws

Further assembly of the handle-knob occurs on the door in the reverse order.
First, install the latch in the door and secure with two screws from the end. It will look like this:

The rectangular front plate of the latch mechanism is mounted flush with the door leaf. To do this, marking under it, with a chisel, the required depth is selected at the end of the door leaf. The same applies to the striker of the knob, which is installed according to the markup, on the door frame. Also, under it, the required depth is sampled with a chisel.

Further, it is already possible to assemble the knob-knob on the door leaf, pulling together the disassembled halves with fixing screws. The square of the handle and bushings for the mounting screws will, during installation, pass through the previously installed latch, through its technological holes

Handles-knobs are universal and are not divided into left / right-handed. The design provides for the installation and adjustment of the knob for any door with a thickness of at least 35mm.

If the shape of the knob-knob has an asymmetrical shape of a ball, etc., then after installing the knob on the door, using the method described above, remove the knob handle, and change the outer and inner handles in places, having achieved their correct location, relative to the location of the door leaf ( left or right side). The latch or lock mechanism, if any, is also brought into the correct location, and if required, we also swap the outer and outer sides.

The handle, assembled and without distortions, installed on the door, should work easily in both directions and independently, under the action of a return spring, return to its original position. If this does not happen, then you need to check the evenness of the installation, as well as tighten or loosen the fixing screws, achieving their equal tightening and soft stroke of the knob.

Can you imagine ordinary doors without a handle? It would seem that such a simple design, but in fact a very important attribute. Installing a door handle on an interior door is a task that consumers face when buying and installing a new door leaf. It is quite possible to solve the problem on your own. It is only important not to make a mistake with the choice of design.

Types of door handles

There are various types of handles that are different from each other in color, shape, material, mechanism and installation method. If we take the last feature as the basis for the classification, then two types of handles are distinguished:

  1. Overhead.
  2. Mortise.

Installation of first class products is simple and hassle-free. They are simply fixed to the surface of the canvas, unlike other types of products. Installation of mortise handles involves pre-drilling a hole in the door leaf.

Mortise devices are divided, in turn, into two more types:

When buying accessories, pay special attention to what raw materials it is made from. Products are metal, wood, glass or natural stone. They should be selected according to the color and model of the canvas, as well as to the style of the interior.

For sliding systems hidden handles can be installed

It is worth noting that the handles are of a hidden type.. They are designed for sliding systems such as sliding doors. When the doors move, the products do not interfere, do not spoil the wallpaper and walls.

Installation height

At what height to mount the handle, it is not clearly spelled out anywhere. Behind the scenes, it is installed in products made of mdf and timber at a distance of one meter from floor covering. It can be lowered or raised a little - it all depends on the taste of the owner of the living space.

The installation height of the door handle is approximately 1 m

The height of the installation of the product is affected by the growth of the residents. As practice shows, a pen at a distance of 1 m is best option for adults and children. When installing, also consider the level of the handles on other doors. Products must be at the same height.

Required Tools

To put the handle, arm yourself with tools, without which it will not be easy to do this:

  • simple pencil;
  • square;
  • roulette;
  • chisel;
  • screwdriver;
  • drill;
  • drill;
  • crown.

The crown and screwdriver can be replaced with other improvised means, but the quality of work will suffer from this and it will take a lot of time.

Before installation, read the instructions for the product. All sizes are indicated in it, which will help you choose the right radius drill bit and crown.

Step by step installation instructions

If you haven't come across this issue before, don't be afraid. Even someone who is not connected with the construction is able to cope with the installation of the handle. You just need to follow the detailed scheme step by step.

Web marking

The installation of the handle begins with the marking on the door

Marking is where the whole process begins. Having calculated at what height the handle will be located, put marks on the door in those places where the holes will be made.

Use a simple pencil, tape measure and corner and draw a horizontal line on the flat surface of the canvas. Then transfer it to the end and the opposite side of the sash.

We put a mark on the end part of the product in the center of the drawn line. She points to a place designed to deepen under the tongue. From the edge of the leaf at a distance of 0.6 cm, draw a point on both surfaces of the door. This place is for the handle.

Drilling holes for the handle and lock

It doesn’t matter at all in what order you make the holes: first for the handle, and then for the lock, or vice versa. Just remember that business does not like haste.

For the handle, the opening is drilled with a drill and a crown. To make it even and neat, it is necessary to drill from the inside and outside of the door to a depth equal to ½ the thickness of the canvas.

Masters advise for greater accuracy to mark this depth on the crown with a felt-tip pen. By following this rule, you will definitely not damage the product.. To make the hole even, hold the drill straight and do not allow it to swing to either side.

When drilling a hole for the handle, the drill must be held straight

To insert a latch into an interior door with your own hands, arm yourself with a drill and a pen. In this case, you need to be extremely careful, since the gap between the pen drill and the end angle is small.

Lock installation

The mechanism must be inserted into the opening drilled under it. Press the overlay to the end of the product and outline it with a pencil on all sides.

Then clean the canvas from the top layer with a chisel and make a recess the size of the thickness of the lining. This is done in order to push it into the door.

The lining is fixed with screws. Recesses for them are made even before the implementation of fasteners.

Fixation of the lining is carried out with self-tapping screws

Handle inset

Products with screws located outside do not need to be disassembled. When installing one component of the structure in place, you must try to get into the latch hole with 2 guides equipped with threads for bolts.

Door handle mounting diagram

After that, the second component of the device is inserted and tightened with bolts. It is necessary to screw in uniform movements so that the handle functions normally.

Products with hidden screws must be disassembled. There will be instructions and a special key to help you. The handle is removed without problems by pressing the stopper with a key. The handle is installed in place after the collapsible part is bolted.

Loot marking

Having completed the installation of the handle, make a recess for the tongue in the hole. To do this, you need to correctly measure. Accurate markings are a guarantee of good operation of the lock and the door itself.

To make marks, cover the canvas and mark the distance from the top to the bottom of the tongue on the loot. We find the middle of the castle with a square and put a “cross” in the loot. In the place of the mark, we drill a recess with tools and get rid of excess material with a chisel.

Cutting a groove in a hole

Before screwing the lining, look at how the canvas closes. If there is no friction or other problems, this means that the tongue groove was made correctly.

Close the door and try to pull it slightly. If it staggers, then this indicates the presence of a small backlash. Don't be scared, it's normal. When the reciprocal bar is added to the groove, everything will fall into place.

The answer is attached flush with the loot. In the same way as when installing a lock, it should be drowned in a loot.

The reciprocal bar is attached flush with the loot

Sometimes, after installing the lining, the play does not disappear anywhere and the doors still stagger. This defect can be corrected by bending the tongue with a small hole on the answer with a screwdriver.

Door Hardware Care

In order for a thing to last for many years, it needs to be looked after. It's the same with accessories. Over the years, it ages and wears out, which negatively affects the product as a whole. To slow down this process, do not forget to take care of the fittings.

To take care of your hands:

  • Wipe them from dust with water and special cleaning products. Avoid products that contain acids, alkalis and abrasive particles. They can damage the outer coating of the product, resulting in rust. After washing, the product must be wiped with a dry cloth.
  • Tighten the loose handle. If this is not done, the mechanism will break.
  • Protect the product from rough mechanical influences.

In addition to the handle, the door lock also needs your care. In this case, basic care means regular lubrication of the mechanism with special means.. Sometimes sunflower or other vegetable oil is used as a substitute.

Considering that it is not easy to get to many parts of the mechanism, a special nozzle in the form of a thin tube is used for lubrication. Often, for these purposes, the lining is removed or the handle is dismantled.

For lubrication of hard-to-reach places of the handle, a tube nozzle is used.

Thus, having studied the basic subtleties of mounting the handle, you are able to master this task without outside help. The main thing at the same time is to believe in yourself and then the reward in the form of a well-installed pen will not be long in coming.

Handles are mandatory in the kit of any door, otherwise you simply cannot open them. Many developers do not pay enough attention to door handles, believing that their main purpose is to assist residents in opening and closing the door. However, the handles have yet to withstand the heavy loads of the door and fit into the overall design of the room. It seems, at first glance, that it is very easy to install this fitting on interior doors. However, in this case, deviations from the instructions for installing the door handle are not allowed!

Purpose of door handles

Before you directly engage in the installation of door handles, you must first buy accessories. To do this, you should decide on the model and manufacturer of the pen. This is not too easy to do, since the market offers a rich variety of fittings, which differ from each other in appearance, size, price and material used.

First of all, door handles are divided into two types: for interior and entrance doors. The fittings for the front door should be not so much aesthetic as reliable and durable, because they have an enormous load, since it is unlikely that it will be possible to open the heavy front door to the apartment without pressing the handle. Often, door handles for entrance doors are equipped with special steel plates and combine the functions of protectors, that is, they serve to protect the cylinder mechanism from drilling, breaking and other forced breaking methods.

Handles for interior doors are less massive in appearance, they are supposed to be more beautiful and elegant according to their intended purpose. But no one canceled their reliability, because no one will like it when the handle remains constantly in the hand when opening or closing the interior door.

The principle of operation of the handles

When buying door handles, it is recommended to pay special attention to their functionality and adaptability to hand movements. Depending on the principle of operation and the shape of this fitting, the following types of door handles are distinguished: push, stationary, push-button (nobs) and handles for sliding doors.

Push handles

Push handles are equipped with a latch that is embedded in the door. When the handle is pressed, the lock tongue is set in motion, the latch is hidden, and the door opens. When the door handle is in its original position, the latch is extended and the interior door is locked. Thus, the installation of a push-type door handle is only possible if the door is equipped with a lock with a latch.

Push-type handles, in turn, are divided into two types: models with separate overlays and with a solid overlay. Lever handles, which have a solid pad, are usually used with latch and deadbolt locks, which are actuated with a key. When selecting such a handle, the center distance between the axis of the keyhole and the handle, the width of the lining, the shape of the turnkey keyhole and the section of the profile pin of the door handle are taken into account.

Separate escutcheon handles are also used with locks that have a latch latch and a deadbolt actuated by a key. However, when selecting these handles, the center distance is not taken into account, only the size of the pads is taken into account. If a lock without a deadbolt with only a latch is used in an interior door, then it is customary to install a push handle with one rosette. In this case, the key is no longer needed.

Push button handles

Knobs are a type of push handles, often referred to as ball handles. There is no lever to press, and to act on the latch, you must turn the ball. A keyhole is usually located in the center of such a ball. The handle opens the door with a simple twist. It is customary to install noba door handles on the door to the bathroom or bathroom, they can be closed from the outside with a key, and from the inside - with a button or latch.

Stationary handles

Stationary handles, unlike push models, are in no way connected with door lock. They cannot be turned or pressed, but can only be pushed away from you or pulled towards you. Install the stationary handle simply on the door leaf: fix such fittings on entrance doors on tightening screws, and on interior doors - on screws. Stationary handles can have different shapes, but the most common of them is U-shaped (bracket).

Since such a handle is completely unconnected with the lock, a lock with a latch latch will not work in this case; a lock with a roller latch and a deadbolt or only with a deadbolt is preferable. Such a roller latch will fix the door, easily releasing it when the door is opened.

Sliding door handles

The sliding door is a non-standard solution in interior design. Doors of this design require the installation of a special handle. Handles for sliding doors are built-in, “drowned” inside the door leaf itself. They need to be true to size inner door in order to avoid poor quality construction.

door handle material

The materials from which handles are made can be different, but most often you can find handles made of metal and wood. Wooden handles look very nice, they are especially harmonious for veneered and wooden doors. However, they are most often afraid high humidity and are not suitable for use in the bathroom. To abrasion racks only handles made of hardwood.

Metal handles can be made from different alloys, and therefore their performance characteristics differ. The most functional and reliable handles are made of brass. They are resistant to changes in humidity and temperature, light, durable and warm to the touch. Aluminum handles are not as strong as brass, but they can be placed in rooms with high level humidity.

For the manufacture of door handles, ordinary and stainless steel is used. This is a durable material that is intended for the heaviest structures. On models made of alloys or metals, it is customary to apply a nickel-plated or chrome-plated coating, which protects products from abrasion and corrosion. Also, Bohemian or Murano glass is used for the manufacture of door fittings, a natural stone and plastic.

Do-it-yourself door handle installation

Despite the wide variety of door handles, their installation comes down to performing the same steps. Let's take a closer look at how to choose and how to properly install a doorknob on a door.

Choosing a door handle

The handle for the door must necessarily correspond to the general style decision of the interior. For example, if your house is furnished in high-tech style, then it is better to give preference to concise chrome-plated handles, and leave luxurious gilded items with elaborate elements for rooms in the rococo or baroque style. For interiors in classical style it is better to choose bronze door handles.

In addition, the handle must fit under the door according to color scheme. The visible parts of any door are hinges and locks, so the handle should match them in color. On the massive doors do not choose a weak handle, because it will quickly break under loads. Wooden handles should not be installed in damp rooms.

The handle must not adversely affect the functioning of the door locking mechanism. An improperly selected handle delivers a lot of trouble: the door does not open or close well. Therefore, before going to the store, it is worth measuring the thickness of the door leaf to find out if the model you like is right for you.

Make sure that all the mechanisms of the handle work properly, and that the lock tongue is completely hidden inside the case. And finally, when buying, it is recommended to touch the handle to find out how comfortable it will lie in the palm of your hand.

Handle installation height

Before installing the door handle, you need to decide at what height you will install it. If you are replacing fittings, then it will be a little easier here, because you have to put the handle back in its original place. The situation with the new door leaf is somewhat more complicated. Remember that door handles in any case should be located at the level of the person’s belt.

When opening the door with the door handle, the arm must necessarily be bent at a right angle in the elbow joint. Depending on the height of the owners, the installation height of the door handle is 80 - 120 centimeters from the floor surface. Please note that the handle on the door that leads to the children's room should be placed slightly lower than on the door to the living room or parent's bedroom.

Door leaf marking

It is recommended to mark the door leaf with a square. Draw a line on one side of the door with a well-sharpened pencil, attach a square and mark on the door with an awl the height of the door handle at a distance of 60 millimeters. Then attach a square and draw the end of the door, after which you can start marking on the other side.

Continue the line on the other side of the door along the finished line and make a mark with an awl at a distance of 60 millimeters. It is also necessary to make a puncture on the butt line with an awl, dividing the thickness of the door in half. After that, attach the fittings to the installation site so that the tongue protrudes completely beyond the borders of the door leaf. In this position, circle the place where you will need to drill a hole for the handle mechanism.

Drilling holes in the door

To drill a larger hole for installing the handle, it is recommended to use a special drill that has a crown. To do this, take a drill, clamp the crown on the tree and drill through the door leaf on one side. Drill not through, but to a depth that is equal to half the thickness of the door, having previously looked at how to install the door handle on the video. To make it visible, you can make a mark on the crown with a marker.

Then drill a hole along the markings on the other side of the door until it is completely drilled out. With this technique, you can be sure that the crown at the exit will not spoil the back of the door and will not go to the side. Hold the drill at a 90 degree angle to the door. Do not allow the drill to deviate horizontally and vertically.

Once you've drilled the hole for the mechanism, it's time to make a hole for the handle's tongue. You can drill it with a feather drill or using a chisel. The most important thing is to control that the drill drills evenly, because only about 6 millimeters will remain at the edges. If you can remove the door, then it can be passed between the legs for easier drilling.

Door handle fixing

When all the necessary holes are prepared, you can begin to install the door handle with your own hands. First you need to take the handle for the door, attach it to the installation site and mark with an awl the points for installing the bolts on which the handle itself will be attached on both sides. To perform this operation, install the mechanism of this design in the drilled hole and screw both halves with the bolts included in the kit.

Bolts must be tightened evenly. Remember that the tightening should be such that the door handle works well and the latch easily returns to its original time. Handles in which the bolts are located under the cap, and therefore are not visible, should be disassembled by pressing the stopper on the handle with the key that comes with the door handle.

Installation of a metal frame

After you have installed a round door handle or another type of handle, you need to proceed with the installation of a metal plate. To do this, again, you need to make a markup. There are two marking methods. The first of them lies in the fact that the end of the tongue should be smeared, for example, with chalk, oil, paint or even toothpaste. Then hide the tongue in the door, close it tightly and make an open-close movement several times so that the tongue makes a mark on the door frame.

The second way is as follows: close the door, slide the ruler into the slot above the tongue and make a mark at the place where it touches the tongue, also mark the bottom of the tongue. To attach a metal frame to the box, you should mark a hole for the tongue and the plate itself. First of all, you need to make a selection under the tongue with a chisel or pen drill.

Having made a hole for the tongue, it is necessary to check whether the tongue comes out of the latch completely and whether the door closes. If everything is fine, then you can start creating a sample for the frame, which is also done using a chisel. The metal frame inserted into the sample should be at the same level with the surface of the box.

The metal frame is screwed to the box with screws. To do this, drill holes using a thin drill, then the screws will lie without distortion. After performing such manipulations, you can close the door to evaluate the result of your work. If the handles open and close easily, the latch moves freely, the door can be closed by light pressing without effort, then such a door handle installation can be called successful.

Door handle replacement procedure

It often happens that it becomes necessary to reinstall the handle on old door. The procedure for replacing fittings is somewhat different from the scheme for installing a door handle on new door, since the hole for the mechanism of the product already exists, and its dimensions should be taken into account. We recommend that you take advantage of some of our tips:

  1. When buying a new door handle, you should consider that it should be no smaller than the old one. Otherwise, the old hole for the mechanism will not be closed, which will spoil the whole look of the door. If it still happened, you need to fill the holes on both sides with wood putty and sand this place with sandpaper.
  2. If you purchased a pen large sizes than the previous one, then you need to expand the hole for the mechanism. This is done using tools that are used to create a hole for the handle mechanism.
  3. If the new door handle is shorter than the old one, and the old spindle is not suitable for it, then it must be replaced with a new one from the door handle kit. And if the spindle is suitable, then you should use it to get rid of unnecessary hassle that may affect the quality of mounting the handle.
  4. If the lock bar is painted but you want to restore its original metallic shine, then in this situation it is recommended to remove this part before installing the door handle and remove the paint with special means, then return the part to its place.
  5. If you decide to paint the door, then you should first remove the door handles and paint the area that is located under them, and only after that you can proceed to further painting the door leaf - this allows you to carefully apply the coloring composition to the door, and also save the fittings from getting on it paints.

Now you know how to install a doorknob. The whole procedure will take you a matter of minutes if you correctly mark the door leaf and door frame, and evenly drill holes for the mechanism and the tongue of the door handle. By analogy, you can also replace the old handle if it breaks, but you need to carefully consider the selection of new fittings.

When buying interior doors, you need to be prepared for the fact that the accessories for them may not be included in the kit. You get a canvas and racks from which doors are made. And in this canvas, a hole for the handle will not even be drilled. The thing is that the product can be very different, have a peculiar design and size. And the handle, which will be installed in advance, may not please the residents. In this case, you need to install a door handle on the interior door. This work can be done by hand. You just need to buy a suitable handle and install it.

What types of pens are there? What is the difference? How to install a handle on an interior door? You will learn all this by reading our article.

Interior door handle

To begin with, let's consider what a similar pen is in general. We are all familiar with them, but it is unlikely that the majority thought about it. design features. It is important for us that she helps to open the door. However, during installation it would be nice to get acquainted with its design. Here's what's in a standard doorknob:

  1. Handle for opening doors (2 pcs.).
  2. Decorative rings that cover the bolts and fasteners of the handle.
  3. One rod or bar of metal that connects one and the other handle of the handle.
  4. The socket is the body of the mechanical part of the structure, in which locks, springs and a tongue cannot be dispensed with.
  5. Stoppers that limit the movement of the tongue and handle.

But, in addition to the standard configuration, all handles for interior doors differ in the installation method, their shape, principle of operation, material and the presence of a lock. If we talk about the installation method, then there are two types of door handles:

  • overhead or stationary;
  • mortise.

Overhead - fairly simple products that are enough to attach to the door leaf. The work is easy and fast. But the mortise door handles are installed in the canvas in the mortise holes. Here you will have to work hard.

As for the way the door handles work, they are divided into the following types:

If we talk about the materials from which they are made, then there is plenty to choose from. Some are made of wood, others are made of metal (aluminum, brass), there are even glass, plastic and stone interior handles. The most popular are metal products coated with chromium, nickel, etc. The material guarantees the wear resistance and service life of the handle.

Note! Products can be equipped with a lock or sold without it. This is chosen according to the needs of the user. When the doors often have to be closed as needed, it is better to stop at models with a latch and put it on.

Nuances before installing the handle

Have you ever wondered how high the handle is? This is very important, because if placed incorrectly, it will be inconvenient for users to use it. If it is high, it will be difficult to reach, and if it is low, you will bend down. Not really single standard, which is guided to install the handle with or without a latch. However, there are some recommendations.

During operation, it was noticed that the best option for placing a handle for interior doors regarding height is a distance of 1 m from the floor. But, each owner can raise or lower this value, based on their own preferences and the growth of family members. It is important to remember one more thing - focus on the height of the handles that you already have in your home. Then it will be easier to choose the best option. Having all the knobs at the same level will make them easier to use.

Tools to get the job done

Before proceeding with the installation of handles on the door, it is important to take care of the availability of all necessary tools for work. They are simple and can be found in everyone in the house. Here is the list:

  • chisel;
  • pencil or marker, square and tape measure;
  • drill;
  • drill, crown;
  • screwdriver

With this set of tools, the job will be much easier. It is clear that you can embed the handle fittings without a crown with a screwdriver, but this will take more time and effort. A crown is an attachment for a drill, thanks to which a perfectly even hole can be made in the canvas in just a few moments.

It is more convenient to work when the door is removed from the hinges. This makes it much more convenient to work. Therefore, do not rush to install it in its place immediately after purchase. When it is impossible to remove it, then you need to properly fix it so that the canvas does not move during operation. This is how you can clearly and correctly mark up and embed the lock.

Another important point- Familiarize yourself with the instructions for the pen. We are accustomed to resorting to it only after wrong actions. However, to avoid them, you just need to read the instructions first. It will indicate all the dimensions, thanks to which it will be possible, ideally, to choose the diameter of the pen and the crown.

Now you can consider the installation instructions, which will help you cope with the task quickly, easily and without errors. And for those who take up such work for the first time, a visual video will be provided.

What's to be done

Consider the list of steps after which the door handle will be installed in its place. All work consists in performing 6 steps. Here they are:

  1. Marking the canvas.
  2. Creating a hole for the lock.
  3. Lock installation.
  4. Handle notch.
  5. Applying markings on the loot.
  6. Creating a groove in the loot.

This is how the handle is installed on the interior door. In order not to miss important details, let's look at each step separately.

Stage 1 - marking the door leaf

Have you already decided on the height of the handle fixation? If not, then it's time to do it. After all, the markup will be performed based on this indicator. To properly markup, you will need a square, tape measure and pencil. With their help, you need to mark on the canvas the places for the holes for the handle. You should measure the distance from the floor and draw a horizontal line with a marker. They are already moving further from it, transferring the markup to the end of the canvas and to the opposite part.

Now you need to mark the place on the end where exactly the hole for the lock tongue will be placed. Along the same line, on each side of the door at an equal distance from the beginning (approximately 60 mm), a place is marked for installing the handle itself.

Stage 2 - creating a hole for the lock and handle

Using a drill and crown, a hole is created for the handle. You will need to drill the canvas on each side, deepening exactly half the thickness of the door. To make the work more convenient to perform, experienced craftsmen recommend making a mark on the crown with a marker. Why not just drill a hole on one side? So the crown can go to the side and the hole will be uneven. In addition, on the opposite side, the door trim can be damaged and damaged. The drill is held strictly at an angle of 90 degrees. It is important to avoid deviations in any direction. And with a chisel after work, you can remove and smooth out all the bumps.

As for the hole for the lock, it is made with a drill with a pen of the required diameter. The work is done carefully, because the distance between the corner of the butt and the pen itself is not very large. There is an opinion that it is better to make a hole for the latch first, and then deal with the handle. But, in what sequence to carry out the process is everyone's business.

Stage 3 - installation of the door lock

This is a simple task when the lock hole is completely ready. It remains only to insert the lock into it. The lock pad is applied on top and circled around the edges with a pencil. Next comes the chisel. With its help, a layer of wood equal to the width of the lining is removed from the marks. Then it can be drowned in the end of the door. To simplify the task, chisels of different widths are used.

The overlay is fixed in the prepared place with screws. it is recommended to make holes for them in advance using a thin drill. It is enough to attach the overlay to its place and mark the attachment points with a pencil.

Stage 4 - handle insert

It's time to get on with the pen. They come with screws on the outside. It is not necessary to disassemble this type of handle. It is only necessary to stop one part in place, falling into the latch hole with its two guides. They have screw threads. After that, the second half is attached and the two parts are pulled together with each other by means of bolts. Twisting is done evenly so that the handle works without problems, and the latch has a simple move.

If the handle has a hidden screw, then it will need to be disassembled. How to disassemble the door handle of an interior door? Often, such handles come with assembly and disassembly instructions, as well as keys for this. Based on it, we disassemble the structure, fasten the collapsible part with bolts and install the handle in its place. You should not use brute force, if everything is done correctly, then the assembly will be easy.

Stage 5 - marking on the loot

At this point, the door handle is ready. It remains only to complete some details regarding the loot. It will need to cut a hole for the tongue and lock (if any). If you want the door to open and close easily, you will have to make high-quality markings.

To do this, you will need to close the interior door and mark the location of the tongue and lock on the loot from the front, marking their top and bottom. The exact middle of the castle is determined for the squares and the marking is transferred to the end of the loot. Now everything is ready for the final step.

Stage 6 - creating a groove in the loot

Focusing on the markup, using a drill and a pen, a hole is made for the tongue and lock. All excess is removed with a chisel. Next, the overlay is installed. But, before installing it, it is important to check the performance of the handle for interior doors. You will have to close the door and check if the tongue from the handle and the lock enter. Do not be surprised if the closed door will play a little or stagger. The thing is that the groove is not yet equipped with an overlay.

Now it's time to fix the bar. It is fixed flush so as not to interfere with the smooth running of the door. In fact, the work is no different from fixing the lining on the back side. Everything superfluous is removed with a chisel, holes are drilled, and the overlay is fixed with the bolts included in the kit.

To help the inexperienced cope with the task, we have prepared a visual video that will show how to install door handles on interior doors.

Conclusion

Do not be upset when the door you bought does not have handles. On the contrary, this is good, since you can choose a product that will be convenient in your case. And since there are so many options, there will be plenty to choose from. With the installation of the handle on the interior door should not be a problem. Thanks to step by step instructions She'll be up and running in a few hours.

Interior doors are sold without fittings. Therefore, the purchase and installation of door handles is carried out separately. To do this, you can use the services of a carpenter or insert it yourself.

Types of door handles

When choosing accessories, you need to know what types of handles are, and how they differ from each other. The variety offered in stores allows you to choose them for the style of the room and ensures ergonomic use. Depending on the installation method, products are divided into two classes:

  • invoices;
  • mortise.

Overheads are attached to the surface and, as a rule, there are no difficulties with them. And mortise ones require preliminary preparation of a hole in the door leaf.

Mortise products can be of two types:

  • Rotary, they are also called knob knobs, which, when the handle is turned, open or close the latch that holds the interior door closed. In most cases, they are made in the form of a ball or disk.
  • Pushers work on the same principle as rotary ones, only the mechanism is activated by pressing the handle. As a rule, they are sold together with a lock or latch, hence another name for them - lever latch handles. Fittings with a push mechanism are widely used for both interior and exterior doors.

Which type of product is better to choose depends only on your preferences. You should also consider the style of the room. Designers advise buying them for all doors in the same room the same.

The height at which the door handle should be is not clearly fixed by any standards. On average, it is located at a distance of 1 meter from the floor. This value can fluctuate up or down depending on your preferences. It may also depend on the height of those who will constantly use the door. When installing, you can build on the level at which other handles in the room are located so that their height is the same.

Instruments

In order to insert a handle into an interior door, you need to have a certain set of tools. It includes:

  • tape measure, square and pencil;
  • chisel;
  • screwdriver, drill;
  • drill, crown.

Using all the necessary tools greatly facilitates the work process. It is quite possible to embed fittings without a screwdriver and crown, but in this case, the work will take much longer.

Fittings are ideally installed when the canvas is removed from the hinges. If this is not possible, then you need to securely fix it in order to qualitatively and evenly perform marking and tie-in.

Before starting the tie-in, carefully study the instructions for the door handle. All sizes are listed there, and you will know what diameter of the crown and nib you need for work.

The instructions below will help you put the handle on the door leaf and avoid mistakes. And for those who first encountered such a case, it will be useful to watch a video on this topic in order to have a visual idea of \u200b\u200bthe upcoming installation work.

Step-by-step instructions for installing a door handle

  1. Canvas marking.
  2. Drilling a hole for the handle and lock.
  3. Lock installation
  4. Handle notch.
  5. Luke marking.
  6. Cutting a groove in a hole

Let's pay special attention to each stage of work, analyzing it in detail.

Web marking

Installation begins with markings on the door leaf. First you need to decide what height will be chosen for the location of the handle. With the help of a square, tape measure and pencil, places on the canvas are marked in which holes need to be made. To do this, we measure the required distance from the floor and draw a horizontal line with a pencil, first on one side, and then transfer it to the end and the other side.

At the end in the middle of the drawn line, we mark the place where a hole will be made for the lock tongue. On the same line on both sides at the same distance from the beginning of the canvas - this is usually 60 mm - we mark the places where the handle itself will be inserted.

Drilling a hole for the handle and lock

Using a drill and a crown, we make a hole for the door handle. You need to check on each side of the canvas to a depth of half the thickness of the interior door. For convenience, experts recommend making a mark on the outside of the crown with a marker. First, on one side, we drill to the required depth, and then on the other until the drilling is complete. This is done so that the crown does not go to the side and so as not to damage appearance when selecting material for fittings. You need to hold the drill at an angle of 90 degrees and not allow it to deviate either vertically or horizontally. With the help of a chisel, we smooth out all the bumps.

We make a hole for the lock with a drill and a pen. Work should be carried out carefully, since the distance between the pen and the corner of the butt is not at all large.

Some experts prefer to first make a hole for the latch, and then for the handle. In what order you will do it does not matter.

Lock installation

To install the lock, it must be inserted into the corresponding hole. Overlay, apply on top and circle it around the perimeter with a pencil. Now you need to use a chisel to select the material to a depth equal to the width of the lining in order to drown it in the canvas. For convenience, you can use several chisels of different widths.

The trim is attached to the door with screws. Holes for them are recommended to be made in advance using a thin drill, attaching an overlay and marking the right places with a pencil.

Handle inset

There are products in which the screws are outside. You don't need to parse them. Putting one part in place, you need to get into the holes of the latch with two guides, in which threads for bolts are provided. Then you need to attach the second half and tighten with bolts. You need to twist them evenly so that the handle works well and the latch easily returns back.

Products in which screws are hidden must be disassembled. Included with them are instructions and a key for disassembly. The handle can be easily removed if you find a stopper on it and press on it with a key. The collapsible part is bolted, after which the handle is put in place. Don't use force, assembly should be easy if you do it right.

Loot marking

After installing the handle, you need to make an appropriate hole for the tongue in the loot. Therefore, first of all, it is important to correctly mark the door so that the door closes well and the lock enters the groove without effort and friction.

We close the interior door and mark the top and bottom of the tongue with a pencil on the loot. Using a square, we determine the exact middle of the castle and mark this value on the loot. We make a hole with a drill and a pen and remove excess material with a chisel.

Cutting a groove in a hole

Before screwing the trim, it is important to check how the door closes. This will allow you to be sure that the groove for the tongue is made correctly and there will be no difficulties during operation. When closed, the door should have a slight play, that is, it should stagger a little. This is necessary because the thickness of the latch striker metal will be added to the groove.

The strap is fastened flush with the loot. To do this, as with the installation of the castle, it must be drowned in the loot to the required depth.

A slight play may remain even after you have screwed on the pad. This defect is easy to fix. The striker always has a tongue with a small hole for a screwdriver. It is designed specifically to bend it. Using a flathead screwdriver inserted into this tab, you can adjust the doors by bending it slightly.

The entire described process can be clearly seen on the video on fitting fittings into interior doors. The installation of the handle can be considered successful if it turns easily and the latch enters the groove without friction and effort.
