What is a fabric ceiling - types, features, finishing rules, do-it-yourself fabric stretch ceiling, how to stretch a suspended ceiling. Features and installation of fabric stretch ceilings Do-it-yourself fabric stretch walls

Why are so many of us attracted to the opportunity to make repairs, or at least part of it, on our own? There are probably several reasons. This is both a pleasant satisfaction from the high-quality work done by one's own hands, which can be shown to guests with special pride, and the opportunity to get exactly such an interior design and quality of finishing that invited specialists cannot do for some reason.

And most often it is the desire to achieve the desired result with the lowest financial costs. Look at the ceiling - isn't it time to put it in order?

If such work seems difficult to you due to large level differences, the need for dirty washing and puttying processes, do not despair: there is a much easier, faster and cheaper way to make the ceiling absolutely smooth and clean with your own hands.

The idea is to make quality repairs accessible to all by using materials in a non-trivial way.

Necessary materials and tools

No, until we need a hardware supermarket - we go to the fabric store. That's right, because we will make the ceiling from the material for the curtains. There are several important points here:

  1. Curtain fabrics have a standard height of 2.8 or 3 m. Most rooms have several large sizes. Hence the conclusion - the panels will have to be sewn together. if you have sewing machine- this is a matter of a couple of minutes, if not, any atelier will surely help you. It is better to add two narrow strips along the edges to make it symmetrical, but in general the seams are almost invisible on the finished ceiling.
  2. The fabric can be any - matte or with a slight sheen, colored, with patterns. This is especially true for children. But, if you have to make seams, choose a plain material.
  3. If you want to avoid seams, you will have to build a drywall structure around the perimeter of the room so that the width of the material is enough to cover the remaining area. If you dreamed of a two-level ceiling, this is a great chance to make your dream come true.
  4. The length and width of the cloth in ready-made should be about 20 cm larger than the corresponding room dimensions.

The material for stretching is bought - now it's time to take care of the fasteners. We need very little:

  1. Cable channels are plastic with a single lock, which are sold at any electrical store. There are also plastic tubes to protect the cables. We select cable channels and tubes of the same caliber, for example, 16 mm. The total length of each material is equal to the perimeter of the room.
  2. Bar with a section of 25x30 or 25x40 mm. They can be of a different size, which depends on how many centimeters you want to lower the ceiling plane. The footage is also equal to the perimeter of the room.
  3. Wood screws, small, for example, 16 or 19 mm, at the rate of 1 pc. for every 0.5 m of the perimeter.
  4. Plastic dowels and self-tapping screws for them, the length of which depends on the cross-section of the beam. Quantity — 1 pc. per linear meter of timber.
  5. To give the finished ceiling a finished look, ordinary polyurethane foam baguettes are used. Their number is easy to calculate based on the footage of the remaining running materials.
  6. Masking tape (paper).
  7. Threaded hook for hanging the lamp.

Of the tools you will need: drill, screwdriver or screwdriver, wood saw, building level, tape measure and cord for beating.

Mounting system

First you need to determine the location of the future ceiling. To do this, we use a building level and a coloring cord to beat straight lines.

To understand what the lowering of the ceiling level will be, you need to make simple calculations: a + b = c, where a- section of the beam, b- caliber of cable channels and tubes, with- the height of the entire structure. For example, if we took a 25x30 beam and 16 mm cable channels, the ceiling level will decrease by 46 mm.

Almost always, the geometry of our premises is far from ideal, and the walls may differ from each other in height. In order for our ceiling to be horizontal, we will have to measure the height of the walls, for this we measure each in several places. We find the point where the wall is the lowest - in this place we retreat 30 mm from the ceiling and beat off a horizontal line through this point with the help of a coloring cord. We check the horizon with a building level.

To be sure of the correctness of the markup, we check: we cross-connect the corners of the room with cords attached to the line. If the cords touch in the center, everything is in order. If they are at a distance or bend over each other, there are errors in the markup.

We prepare the beam: it must be attached along the broken line to the walls. We drill holes for self-tapping screws in increments of about 1 m, mark the points for drilling holes for dowels on the walls.

We remove the covers from the cable channels - we do not need them. We attach the box to the beam from below in the longitudinal direction, stepping back from the edge of 0.5-1 cm. In the corners we join them in a T-shape, with a gap of 2-3 mm. Fasteners are made with small self-tapping screws in increments of about 50 cm. The self-tapping screws are screwed into the “crossbar” of the U-shaped box.

Let's not forget about the lamp. Near the outlet of the electric cable on the ceiling, we fasten a piece of timber into which we screw the hook. Its bend should be about 2 cm below the level of the future ceiling. We pull two cords diagonally through the center of the room - we find the required level.

Panel stretch

To make the fasteners more reliable, it is worth carrying out one more preparatory event. Plastic tubes are pasted over with paper tape. No need to try to do it very carefully - the more folds and creases there are, the better.

At the moment, we can say that the main part of the work is done - the simplest and most pleasant remains. Before stretching, it is recommended to remove dust well from the floor, walls and ceiling of the room so as not to stain the panel. It needs to be ironed to remove wrinkles. It will also be useful to lightly spray the fabric with antistatic so that in the future the dust that appears in each room does not settle on the ceiling.

Stretching is easiest to do with two or three people, although one person can do this job quite well. The edge of the cloth is thrown onto a plastic tube, which, together with the fabric, is inserted into the groove of the cable channel with light pressure and pinched in it. Thus, all edges of the ceiling material are raised and fixed.

Now the fabric needs to be stretched - you need to start from the middle of the wall and move gradually to the corners. With one hand, the tube is held in the groove, the other hand pulls the edge of the panel down and towards the corner in order to gradually drive all the folds there. Things will go faster if you pull on two opposite sides of the perimeter at the same time. You need to pull hard, but so that the tubes do not pop out of the grooves.

Before finally fixing the fabric, it is necessary to make a hole for the electrical cable and the hook. It is clearly visible from below, as it stands out on the plane of the stretched fabric. The hole is made using any available device, such as a lighter. So we "kill" two birds with one stone - we make a hole and fix its edges so that the "arrow" on the fabric does not run.

When the hole is ready, remove the fabric from the fasteners on one side of the room to the hook, carefully pass the cable and hook through the hole, and then fasten the fabric back. Later, the hole will be closed with a decorative lamp cap. If the hole is made in advance, before stretching, there is a danger of "missing" and it will be more difficult to fit the hole to the hook. In addition, if you singe the edges of the hole in the unstretched state, when stretched, there is a chance that the “arrow” will still appear on the fabric.

Only details remain. Once again, carefully stretch the panel to remove all the wrinkles. It would be nice to moisten the fabric with a spray bottle so that it stretches even more when it dries. To be sure of the fastening, you can screw the screws directly through the tube to prevent it from rotating under the tension of the fabric. The pitch of the screws is about 0.5 m.

Fastener masking

It remains to hide the fasteners with polyurethane baguettes. They are cut and glued to the wall in the same way as it is done with conventional repairs, with the difference that they are not attached to the ceiling.

Before gluing, the hanging edge of the fabric must be rolled up and fixed to the beam, for example, with tape or a stapler. It is better to use baguettes with symmetrical shoulders, that is, having an angle shape with equal sides in cross section.

Baguettes can be painted in advance, or after installation. Then the ceiling panel must be protected with a long spatula.

Why do we need all this

The ceiling is ready! Perfectly smooth, beautiful and ... very inexpensive. The lion's share of its value is fabric. If you have had repairs done before, it is quite possible that you have extra scraps of building materials left - you can use them and not spend money on buying timber. Self-tapping screws and dowels, too, for sure, every owner will find.

  1. The most inexpensive fabric for curtains costs about 200-300 rubles. We take 3.2 m, we spend 960 rubles.
  2. Cable channels and tubes cost about 10-12 rubles per linear meter. 11 meters will cost 132 rubles.
  3. A bar 25x30 is offered at a price of about 20 rubles. for a three meter line. Thus, lumber will cost us 80 rubles.
  4. Self-tapping screws can be bought by weight, a handful of these fasteners will not pull more than 100 rubles. The same applies to dowels.
  5. An ordinary baguette for ceilings costs about 100 rubles. for a segment of 2 m. Accordingly, 6 shoulder straps - 600 rubles.

Let's calculate? We spent several hours and 1972 rubles to bring the ceiling into perfect condition. As they say, comments are superfluous ...

Of course, like most other ceiling repair methods, this method also has its own weak sides. The main one is the inability to wash the cloth without removing it. However, as you have already seen, this process is not very difficult. If the neighbors above behave peacefully, nothing threatens your ceiling!

Modern fabrics allow you to perform unusual shapes of ceilings and change any room beyond recognition. Consider what the drapery of the ceiling with a cloth is like, the features of the fastening of the canvas and the popular styles of decoration.

The content of the article:

A fabric ceiling is a fabric-decorated ceiling surface that is considered alternative way cover design. The main task of draping the ceiling with fabric is to add harmony to the interior and create comfort in the room. To obtain the desired result, adhere to certain rules for the selection of fabric and arrangement of the structure, which we will now get acquainted with.

Advantages and disadvantages of fabric ceilings

Decorating ceilings with fabric has become popular due to the many advantages of this method. Advantages of drapery overlap:
  • Pre-treatment of the base base is not required, since the canvas is usually attached at the edges and does not touch the floor surface.
  • This is one of the few ways to decorate the ceiling that does not require building skills.
  • The fabric covers the unsightly appearance of the overlap.
  • Wiring, cables and communications can be fixed to the base ceiling, which will then be covered with a canvas.
  • The fabric ceiling has good thermal insulation properties.
  • The false ceiling is not easy to damage, minor defects are invisible.
  • The ceiling decorated with fabric turns into an exclusive work of art.
In addition to the obvious advantages, fabric ceilings also have disadvantages. Matter has a porous structure and does not hold water. When wet for a long time, the fabric changes color, appears bad smell. The fabric absorbs odors.

Design features of fabric ceilings

The canvas allows you to create interesting design effects on the ceiling, which should match the overall interior of the rooms. To choose the best option, study the popular methods of ceiling drapery.

A tent-like ceiling looks good if the walls are decorated in the appropriate style. This type of drapery looks good in independent performance. A hipped ceiling significantly reduces the height of the ceiling near the walls and cannot be used in any room. For a better perception, it is desirable to take a photo of the fabric ceiling, made in the form of a tent.

Wavy ceilings are made with the help of additional suspensions. Any material is suitable for such structures, but it is better to use translucent and not very heavy types.

The method of installing a fabric ceiling "from the walls to the center" has many variations. For example, a canvas soft material can be suspended with sagging or pulled tighter to form a large number flat folds. Usually, a chandelier is placed in the center of the composition to obtain a semantic center.

Choice of fabric for ceiling drapery

The device of a fabric ceiling is very simple: a canvas for creating a false ceiling and a frame for attaching it. Very often, the canvas is modified to install lamps, and slats, tubes or other elements are added to the base ceiling or frame to create a relief surface. Information about drapery fabrics and profiles is given below.

Material requirements for ceiling upholstery

There are practically no restrictions on the choice of fabric for drapery, but there are practical side tasks. The material for the ceiling must have the following properties:

  1. Do not change the strength properties and appearance under the influence of sunlight.
  2. Do not lose shape and color after numerous washes.
  3. Matter should not be too wrinkled.
  4. Choose stretchy fabric.
  5. Do not use materials that have the property of "collecting dirt".
  6. The choice of fabric type is also influenced by the desire of the user to use a material with certain properties.
  7. Fabric made from natural ingredients (linen, cotton, wool) goes well with the wooden elements of the room. In addition to decorative functions, it has good heat and sound insulating characteristics.
  8. Drapery fabrics must be treated with anti-static, anti-allergic and dust repellent agents. After impregnation, the material is not afraid of sunlight, has a high degree of wear resistance. All types of fabrics - natural and synthetic - are subjected to such impregnation.

Types of fabric for drapery ceiling

Among customers, such options for upholstery of the ceiling with fabric are popular:
  • Linen. The cover is nice and solid. The canvas does not sag over time, it does not stretch during installation. During cleaning, dust is quickly removed from the surface.
  • Jacquard. Gives the room comfort and respectability.
  • fine silk. Always creates a sense of sophistication and celebration.
  • Cotton. Associated with tranquility.
  • Chiffon. Use in bedrooms and children's rooms. It gives the ceiling lightness and airiness. The fabric does not stretch after installation, dust does not collect on its surface
  • exotic jute. Helps to create original styles.
  • Beautiful matting. Combines with country style.
  • Brocade. For the ceiling, material of bright colors is used. Noble heavy fabric is used to decorate a living room or hall.
  • Herringbone fabric. Suitable for any design.
  • Canvas. Brings a feeling of unshakable well-being.
  • Velvet. Admire luxury.

Some types of materials have the properties of sound absorption, water resistance, for example, leather, tapestries.

The color scheme of paintings for ceiling sheathing

Different colors and patterns of fabric create effects that visually change the shape of the room, and can also influence people's emotions. To decorate the ceiling, fabrics with any structure are used - shiny and matte, transparent and dense, plain and with patterns.

Colors are chosen depending on the purpose of the room:

  1. If the color of the ceiling is darker than the walls, it will press and hang over you.
  2. Fabric with transverse stripes is stretched in narrow spaces. This design visually increases the space of the room, but reduces the height of the ceiling.
  3. A ceiling with a longitudinal pattern or stripes increases the height of the ceiling.
  4. A small pattern on the ceiling makes the room cozy.
  5. A canvas with large patterns is not recommended to be installed in small rooms.
  6. Light ceilings form the illusion of increasing the interior space of the room, dense and dark colors create the opposite effect.
  7. The red color of the canvas is uplifting, but for some people it can cause irritation. Fabric of this shade is never used in rest rooms.
  8. Yellow is good for the eyes, stimulates the nervous system.
  9. In rooms with green ceilings, you can relax and unwind. Green color is considered a relaxant throughout the world. It calms, reduces pressure and has a positive effect on heart rate.
  10. It works well with blue ceilings, lethargy and apathy go away.
  11. Violet color adjusts to reflection, but the eyes quickly get tired.

Preparatory work before upholstery of the ceiling with fabric

Features of preparing for the installation of a fabric ceiling:
  • Fabric before drapery should be prepared. Cut off a small piece from the main canvas and measure it. Wet the cloth, dry it and measure again. If the size has not changed, you can start draping the ceiling. When changing the size, the entire fabric should be decoated - wet, dry and iron.
  • It is advisable to use one piece of canvas to get a seamless ceiling. If it was not possible to acquire a wide canvas, the fabric is sewn together and then ironed, especially carefully processed at the joints.
  • Before work, wind the canvas on a long pole, this will facilitate the assembly of the structure.
  • It is best to mount the ceiling together: one holds the roll, the second fastens the canvas to the frame or ceiling.

Fabric ceiling installation technology

You can fix the material to the ceiling as you like, but all options will be modifications of the most popular mounting methods.

The frame method involves mounting the structure on the floor, followed by fastening to the ceiling. The frame is assembled from wooden or plastic slats. This method is usually used to obtain flat structures or products with a slightly sagging web. The frame ceiling can be attached to the ceiling using special fixtures. In this case, you can adjust the height of the ceiling. One of the varieties of fabric ceilings made wireframe, is called boiserie. They are sold as finished fabric or leather panels that are made to order. The user only needs to fix the product to the ceiling.

Fastening the fabric with rails involves the use of wooden or plastic bars measuring 30x40 mm, which are first attached to the ceiling without matter. Wooden structures used in rooms, plastic - in the kitchen, bathroom or toilet. For drapery, a fabric with a 20% margin is used. In this way, fabrics of pastel shades with gilded or silver threads are fixed.

Fastening the fabric on the rails is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Fix the slats around the perimeter of the room near the walls with dowels and self-tapping screws.
  2. Stretch the fabric from one wall to another, across the entire width of the room, check the absence of waves on the canvas.
  3. Fasten the canvas to the bars with staples, starting from the middle of the wall and moving towards the corners, gradually unwinding the canvas from the roll. For fixing, use staples No. 8, 10. Stuff the staples often, so use an electric stapler.
  4. After fixing the canvas on one side of the room, move on to the other. At the end of the work, the fabric should not sag.
  5. Measure the gaps between the slats and the walls and cut the decorative MDF panel to size.
  6. Close the gap with the prepared panel. Staple marks can also be masked with tape, and a ceiling plinth can be used instead of an MDF board.
The clip-on version of the installation of fabric ceilings involves attaching the baguettes to the walls, and then fixing the canvas to them. This method is used to obtain volumetric and airy ceilings. Synthetic fabrics are usually fastened with the clip method. Fastening the web in clips is no different from the method of fixing the film stretch ceilings. Before installation, a tape with a clip is sewn to the edges of the canvas, which snaps into the baguette.

Velcro is considered the easiest method of fastening. The canvas is held on textile Velcro fasteners, which are sewn onto the fabric and glued in appropriate places on the ceiling or frame. This method allows you to quickly remove the canvas and permanently solve the question of how to make the fabric ceiling collapsible. The option is not designed for massive structures; Velcro may not withstand heavy fabric.

Most often, silk fabric is fixed to the ceiling with glue. The process is similar to gluing wallpaper, but the glue is applied only to the ceiling. The upholstery of the ceiling with a fabric is performed in the following sequence:

  • Smooth out surface irregularities with putty.
  • If the ceiling is painted, go over the surface with sandpaper until it is rough.
  • Clean the ceiling of dust and rinse with soda solution. If you find dark spots, paint over them so that they do not appear later.
  • Prime the surface.
  • Apply a layer of special glue to the ceiling and give it a little time to dry.
  • Next, press the canvas firmly against the ceiling and smooth it with a rubber roller. The next strip is glued in compliance with the canvas pattern.
  • The fabric begins to be glued from the center of the room to the walls. If the matter is with a pattern, control that it does not go astray.
The negative aspects of gluing the fabric include a long period of drying of the glue and the frequent peeling of the canvas from the ceiling, therefore, before the glue hardens, it is necessary to constantly monitor the condition of the ceiling.

To obtain a ceiling in the form of waves or sails, thin tubes or cords are attached to the ceiling or walls, and the canvas is thrown over them. Also, beautiful waves are obtained in the case of fastening the canvas to the ceiling with Velcro.

Currently, there are many different design solutions for finishing the ceiling. modern materials with the most varied colors, stylish drawings and interesting shape. The last of fashion trends ceiling finishes were made by a multi-level ceiling with lighting. Stretch ceilings are also very popular.

Fabric stretch ceilings

  4. does not emit foreign odors, absolutely environmentally friendly
  5. completely fireproof, since non-combustible materials are used in its production
  6. color retention when exposed to sunlight
  7. durability and practicality

One of the types of stretch ceiling is a fabric ceiling, which today has become one of the new trends in fashionable design solutions for ceiling decoration. Finishing the ceiling with a fabric can radically change the decoration of the room.

The fabric ceiling is a porous base impregnated with a polystyrene composition. As a result, the material is very durable, and the ceiling itself looks beautiful, aesthetically pleasing. Such stretch ceilings do not have seams, since the canvas can reach a width of 5 meters and there is no need to use welding. The complete absence of seams and gives an aesthetic appearance to the upper surface of the room.

The material can be either natural fabric or fiberglass or artificial. When using fiberglass, ceilings become more durable as a result of increased performance properties that are able to experience and withstand exposure to any temperature, both low and high.

In general, the installation of a fabric-based stretch ceiling is no different from the installation of its PVC counterpart, therefore, about the details of its installation.

Benefits of fabric ceilings

The fabric material is environmentally friendly and has a different density and weight, is able to resist various types of bacteria, spoilage, mold. These properties allow it to be used in many types of buildings, up to street structures. High-quality fabrics allow you to expand the possibilities for designers, look great in almost all places as:

  • suspended ceilings in sports facilities - swimming pools, health centers, recreation centers
  • false ceilings in commercial buildings - supermarkets, shops, restaurants, nightclubs, beauty salons
  • ceiling finishes in industrial buildings; at airports, train stations
  • solar ceilings in car dealerships, gaming complexes, entertainment centers

The use of fabric for finishing the ceiling is due to the following properties:

  1. light weight and flexible material
  2. the possibility of applying images to it using photo printing
  3. necessary ventilation
  4. the possibility of attaching light devices in the fabric itself, as well as their installation above it

Using various techniques of decorating art, you can achieve interesting and stunning effects - express the play of light and shade in numerous folds of drapery, emphasize it favorably. Using the texture difference, different kinds draperies, you can create an unusual and unique design of the ceiling, which brings a special flavor to the decoration of the room. Also a good design would be the use of leather and beautiful materials for curtains.

Do-it-yourself ceiling decoration with fabric

Unusual and new is always interesting. Human fantasy is truly limitless. Imagine a room, on the white ceiling of which the most amazing red-burgundy roses are spread, you just can’t take your eyes off! And to build such beauty is quite easy, it will take 2-3 meters to decorate the ceiling with a cloth, depending on the size of the ceiling of the room, high-quality fabric, for example, German curtain.

Preparing the ceiling for fabric finishing

For gluing the fabric and constructing the fabric ceiling, the following steps must be followed:

  • Well plaster and level the surface to achieve a perfect smoothness of the surface.
  • Pull tight, like a canvas on a stretcher. As a result, you can hide the existing irregularities.

To perform these steps, you first need to clean the surface of the ceiling from any contaminants, remove all cracks, cracks, seal them with putty and dry. After that, grind with sandpaper, remove roughness.
There should be no stains that can show through the fabric, they must be covered with a layer of nitro enamel or sealed with thin aluminum foil.
If there is on the surface oil paint it should first be washed with water, to which soda is added, and then dry the surface thoroughly. Then clean with sandpaper.

Ceiling installation: method 1

To install a fabric web, you need to prepare a profile, one of its best types is aluminum, it is more durable and reliable. We fix the fabric in the middle in the profile, while leaving a margin - 5-6 centimeters of the fabric should protrude beyond the edges of the profile. With a small step, we tighten the canvas, trying to align it as much as possible. The movement should start from the middle of the room to its corners, the direction of movement of the canvas should occur in both directions. In the direction of travel, we fix the canvas in a baguette, at the end we fix it in the corners of the profile.

If there are wrinkles on the fabric, you can easily remove them using a building hair dryer. Warm up these places with smooth circular movements, while holding the hair dryer at a distance of 20 cm from the canvas, set the temperature to 180 degrees. After the installation is completed, we remove the pieces protruding beyond the edges of the profile, after which it remains only to install decorative plugs.

Ceiling installation: method 2

Another interesting option for building a fabric stretch ceiling with your own hands can be the following method. Prepare wooden beams with a section of each corner 2x3, any building workshop can quickly make them. Order the length of the beam by 50 centimeters more than you need according to measurements, since their corners are subsequently subject to filing. Penatex should be used to process the bars and obtain the desired shade. In addition, you will need Velcro tape (you can buy it in sewing stores), and 8 metal corners.

We are building a frame that will be suspended from the ceiling. We attach the hard side of the tape with a special stapler to that part of the beam that protrudes, having previously glued it to liquid nails. The back of the tape must be sewn around the perimeter to front side curtains.

The finished frame will be located under the lamp, if it is not transparent, it is necessary to provide a high-power lamp, a flat 6 lamp will do. When choosing thin or transparent fabric Normal lighting is sufficient.

It remains only to hang the resulting structure to the ceiling. It will look unusual if you use chains and hang the frame on them from the ceiling, and fastening to the ceiling can be done using pipe holders. After screwing the hooks into the frame and installing it, the stretch ceiling is ready and looks like a real feast for the eyes! This design is very reliable and practical. In case of distortions along the walls important point in the process of installing the frame on the chains is to adjust the suspension on the chain link, to achieve parallelism in all corners.

A great convenience is the ability to easily remove the structure from the ceiling by removing one side of the chain from a pair of hooks. Having lowered the frame from the ceiling, you can easily and quickly remove the fabric from the frame for washing when it is dirty or replacing the fabric with another one. You just need to remove the fabric from the Velcro. Ceiling decoration with fabric can be used both in small rooms and in large areas.

When preparing several fabric options, the interior of the room can be changed very often. Ceiling drapery with fabric looks very attractive and spectacular, and most importantly - unique!

In today's article we will talk about how to carry out the installation of fabric stretch ceilings.

New technologies - new opportunities

Like everything in modern world, construction technologies do not stand in one place. Some ten or fifteen years ago, stretch ceilings were something from the category of "premium" solutions available only to the elite. Today it is one of standard methods interior decoration.

Vinyl - Key Benefits

The use of fiber optic lighting also has a positive effect on the popularity of this method of interior decoration. In addition, they are quite durable.

At its core, the ceiling canvas is an ordinary vinyl film. The advantages of this material include water resistance, which allows you to reliably protect the space from accidental leaks from above. Thus, even if the neighbors from above flood you, your fresh renovation will not be spoiled, as French fabric stretch ceilings will reliably protect the room. All water will accumulate in the resulting "bag". After eliminating the source of leakage, this water is drained through a special hole. And do not think that the canvas is not able to withstand heavy loads. A modern vinyl ceiling can withstand 100 kg / sq.m. And this, you see, is a very solid indicator.

Although, by the way, vinyl, like other man-made materials, is not without flaws. First of all, we mean its price and the need to attract specialists for the installation of such a ceiling.

Stretch ceiling - the main criteria

Although the price is to some extent a deterrent, the resulting coverage pays for itself very quickly. And in order for the stretch ceiling to be of high quality, it is necessary to pay due attention to the calculations, the choice of material and the process itself.

Difficult choice

Choosing a vinyl ceiling is necessary with some knowledge. So, for example, let's say you've chosen a glossy white ceiling. Your motivation is simple - get the most light in the room. But after mounting the ceiling, it turns out that everything happens exactly the opposite. The room is darker than before. What went wrong? After all, the ceiling is glossy and white. It is in the gloss that lies main reason such an effect. Such a ceiling well reflects not only light, but also the surrounding space. Thus, if you have a dark floor and furniture, then they will be reflected in the ceiling. And the installation of a large number of fixtures will only exacerbate this situation. Therefore, the choice of canvas must be entrusted to specialists.

Installation of fabric stretch ceilings

But then you need special tools and knowledge of certain techniques. A puncher, screwdrivers, a knife - all this can be easily found in everyone good master. But what about the special spatula with which the canvas is filled? Yes, it can be purchased at the nearest construction supermarket. But what about the heat gun?

The PVC ceiling requires that the room temperature be around 40 degrees during installation. Only in this case, the canvas can be properly stretched. Buy such heat gun for a single installation is completely unprofitable, since the cost of such an installation is quite high.

Do-it-yourself fabric stretch ceiling

But what then to do? After all, the services of specialists can cost as much as the material itself and consumables? Fortunately there is Alternative option. You can install fabric-based stretch ceilings. It is about the technology of mounting such a canvas that we will talk below. Everyone can install fabric stretch ceilings with their own hands; this does not require special tools or knowledge.

The choice of fabric is the most important strength and practicality

For the manufacture of stretch ceilings, we use coarse calico. The choice of this fabric is due to several factors. Coarse calico is made in a special way - cotton threads are intertwined using the linen method, which gives the already durable material additional durability. If you have calico clothes, then you know that they do not lose their shape and quality even after numerous washes. The color of fabric stretch ceilings should match the overall color scheme of the room.

Before buying matter, you need to make measurements of the ceiling. This will help determine the required size of the material. And in order to measure the ceiling, it is not at all necessary to climb a ladder. It will be enough to measure the floor area, since it is identical to the ceiling.

You should buy unpainted calico, with a coarse fiber structure. This allows, firstly, to save on material, and secondly, opens the way for subsequent painting and processing of the canvas. Other types of fabric stretch ceilings involve the use of a variety of fabrics.

Mounting tools

So, the material is acquired. Now, in order to make a fabric stretch ceiling with your own hands, you need to prepare the tools.

We will need the following:

  • drill or perforator;
  • construction stapler;
  • wallpaper spatula (fins);
  • painting knife and scissors;
  • laser or water level.

From additional materials, in addition to calico linen, you will need:

  • wooden bars section 40*50 or 50*50 mm. The number of bars is selected in accordance with the perimeter of the room;
  • anchor. The number and size depends on the area of the room and the material of the walls. As a result, the bars fixed by them must hold firmly;
  • tracing paper;
  • mounting adhesive;
  • PVA glue;
  • paint and primer for coarse calico.

It is better to install a fabric stretch ceiling with your own hands together. First, a single canvas is sewn from the existing pieces of fabric, which will fit the size of your room. In this case, it is necessary to leave 10-15 cm for stock and fastening.

The first step is to fix the bars around the perimeter of the room. To do this, horizontal markings are preliminarily applied to the walls:

  • First, using the level, you need to find the lowest point of the ceiling, then several marks of this height are made along the perimeter of the wall.
  • If you purchased bars with a section of 50 * 50 mm, then 5 cm recede from the marking place.
  • After that, using a level, a flat horizontal line is drawn along the wall.
  • If everything was done correctly, then the ends of the line should clearly match.
  • To do this, cook a paste.
  • To two parts of the resulting mixture add one part of PVA glue.
  • After that, the mixture is thoroughly stirred.
  • Since we need a consistency close to liquid sour cream, water is added to the container.
  • The mixture is again thoroughly mixed.
  • After that, the tracing paper is glued to the seams in the canvas.
  • Separate strips of tracing paper are overlapped.

In order to get the best fabric stretch ceilings, it is necessary to process the edges of the joints with sandpaper (zero). After that, the seams are covered with PVA glue, and the ceiling is left to dry. In parallel with drying, you can start pasting baguettes. After the canvas dries, you can start painting it. This is done in several layers, giving each layer of paint time to dry.

You can see the stages of such installation of stretch ceilings in the photo. If you want to install a chandelier or others lighting, then look for instructions on how to do this in other materials of our portal.

“The mind is incomprehensible! Just finished renovation! And she - "I want a new ceiling, something fabulous!" Alex was outraged. “There are a lot of ways to decorate the ceiling on the Internet. Even draping the ceiling with fabric will add zest, ”I reassured my friend. “It takes a lot of money!” He didn't let up. "Don't worry, we'll make a fabulous fabric ceiling with our own hands!" He said he would have to help. Well, let's get started!

Choice of color and material

Both silk and synthetics, veil, and even velvet or satin are excellent for decorating the ceiling. The choice of material dictates the result to us. Organza will make the room airy, and luxurious velvet will help create a cozy atmosphere.
What color to choose? Pink will slightly reduce the height, add a youthful style. Orange will fill the cheerful mood of summer. Lilac relaxes and helps relieve tension and stress after a hard day. Delicate beige adds airiness.
It's time to go to the fabric store. To make a fabric ceiling, we decided to use organza in several colors of calm lilac and soft beige. So these colors were called by a nice girl-consultant. We, men, do not really understand where it is gently lilac, and where it is calm beige. They understood one thing for sure: they would add coziness and fabulousness to the interior of the bedroom.

Training

How to calculate the amount? With a stretch ceiling, everything is simple - you can measure the floor of the room, because the area of \u200b\u200bthe ceiling and floor is the same. In our case, 12 m2. But what about drapery? We decided that the fold step would be equal to half the step between the folds. So in theory we need twice as much fabric as the area of the ceiling. So they did. According to the drawing, we will alternate lilac with beige in the same way. Therefore, we bought 14 meters of lilac and 10 beige fabrics.

Note. You need to calculate the strips with a slight overlap. The width of our lane is 1.2m. those. overlap approximately 20 cm.

Now it's time to visit the hardware store. What do we need. For the frame of our construction along the perimeter of the walls, a bar 4x5 cm with a total length of 50 meters (perimeter 48 meters) and a piece of plywood 35x35 cm 1.5 cm thick. Plywood is needed for the center. In the nearest carpentry workshop, we will cut a circle with a diameter of 35 cm.

Instruments:

  1. Construction stapler;
  2. Perforator for walls and ceilings. We rented. Since I have a small household drill, but such a floor slab cannot be overcome;
  3. Last (wallpaper spatula) part-time template;
  4. Construction knife and scissors;
  5. Level. Laser is the best.

Worth noting what to do fabric ceiling better with an assistant.

Execution of work

Let's transgress. First, fix the bars on the walls around the perimeter of the room. If the ceiling height allows, you can experiment with the height. You can give additional airiness to the room. But, when the ceiling height of a standard panel is 2.6 m, there is no other option but to fix the frame at the very top. The first circle of plywood was fixed in the center. As expected, brick walls partitions surrendered without a fight, but the stove took a lot of strength and sweat.

The next step is to start marking and cutting the strips into pieces of 3 and 4 meters. It's simple. You need to draw a circle into 14 parts. There were 4 lilac three-meter stripes, 2 beige ones. And four meter stripes, four of each color.
Finally, we transgress to the fastening of our bands. We stretch along the perimeter of the walls without folds, we wrap the ends of the strip inward. Be sure to overlap about 10 centimeters, otherwise you will see lumbago. Then we start the fabric on our section of the circle, we do the assembly. The whole thing is carefully fastened with brackets. The drawing is as follows: lilac stripes in the corners. Inside is beige. There is one beige stripe on a three-meter wall, and two on a four-meter wall.

How are stretch ceilings installed?

Managed to fix a few bands. And then it dawned on me. If you fix led strip along the perimeter of the frame, you can get an original backlight. And now, we are already going to the construction hypermarket. The LED strip was connected in the junction box to one of the switch keys. I had to abandon the adjustment of the light in the main lamp.
Honestly, it is not difficult to fix the fabric on the bar - one pulls, the other fastens. But with the circle I had to “sweat”. Marks were drawn on the template with a marker so that the waves of the drapery were the same. In less than two hours, all the elements were fixed. Draping the ceiling with fabric was a success!

We fix the lamp on a plywood circle. Everything seems to be. But, something is missing. Exactly! The fastening brackets around the perimeter are not hidden in any way. Another trip to the supermarket for a polypropylene cornice. The skirting board was bought with a coating, so as not to waste time on pre-painting.

Advice. Prepare the material in advance for decorating the junction of the ceiling and wall. And you need to paint too. Otherwise, there is a big risk of staining the fabric.

Glued fillets only to the wall. That, in fact, is all. The fabric on the ceiling looks beautiful and truly fabulous, especially with backlighting.
