Painting fiberglass (cobweb): applications, cost, installation technique, practical advice for beginners. Painting fiberglass: varieties, application features, installation Use gossamer fiberglass

By mistake, for pasting the ceiling, instead of fiberglass with a density of 25, I purchased a lot of 50. Please tell me whether such fiberglass will hold or is it better to replace it with 25. And also tell me what is better to use for priming the ceiling: primer or diluted glue? Ceiling - plastered and puttied concrete slabs, there are small cracks at the joints.

There is no particular error. For such work, both fiberglass with a density of 25 g / m and 50 g / m are quite suitable. If you have already bought a higher density material, use it. Fiberglass of lower density is more profitable to use, since it costs much less. You should also take into account the consumption of glue: for 50-ku it will take an order of magnitude more. In your case, 25 would have completely coped with the task, because no major damage to the ceiling. Fiberglass with a density of 50 g / m is used for large cracks and other significant defects in the ceiling, since it is more durable.

Usually, in a new house, the walls shrink for several years, respectively, cracks appear, fiberglass will perfectly cope with cracks not only visually, but also prevent them from expanding.

Fiberglass, according to the manufacturers, is made of natural materials, non-toxic, air and vapor permeable, however, like ordinary wallpaper. However, unlike the latter, it reinforces walls, ceilings, is not afraid of chemicals, is not static, and is less susceptible to mechanical damage.

Preparing for work is extremely simple: large cracks must be expanded and cleaned of “fragments”, i.e. remove anything that crumbles or crumbles. Small cracks also need to be inspected and checked with a spatula for chips.

Can be primed with the most common primer deep penetration based on acrylic

The primer will provide reliable adhesion, protection against bacteria and fungus. You can use an adhesive solution, but a primer will be better.

It is not necessary to use a special adhesive (eg Wellton GW300-k). Suitable for ordinary PVA

We paste over the places of large cracks with pieces of reinforced fiberglass, it is not necessary to glue small ones.

If the canvas roll has bad edges - it's okay, glue the overlap, without smoothing the joint much, then immediately make a slot in 2 canvases with a clerical knife, and remove the excess.

Cracks at the joints of the GKL will not appear if you stick fiberglass under the putty

It can be very disappointing when, after the end of a long and expensive repair, cracks suddenly appear on the ceiling or walls in those places where the joints between sheets of drywall or other facing material pass. To prevent this from happening, experienced builders recommend not being limited to a sickle mesh for reinforcing seams, but completely pasting the surfaces with fiberglass with their own hands.

Gluing fiberglass is much easier than wallpaper, it takes a little time, but as a finish, you can be sure and not be afraid that due to shrinkage of the house or temperature changes, repairs will soon be needed again. Let's find out what kind of material it is, how it "works" and what is needed for its installation.

fiberglass

Fiberglass is nonwoven fabric made of fiberglass, outwardly resembling a thin "blotter". It is produced by pressing, not by weaving fibers. By itself, it does not have strength, it is easily torn, but after gluing to the surface, subject to strict adherence to technology, it forms a reinforcing coating that is very resistant to deformation effects.

Fiberglass is sold in rolls of 45-50 meters with a width of 1 meter, and may differ in density. It has a front and back side, which must be taken into account during installation.

The price of the material is low, depending on the density, a roll can cost from 300 to 1000 rubles. This is not something worth saving on, since repeated repairs as a result of the appearance of cracks will cost much more.

Auxiliary materials and tools

Of course, the fiberglass itself will not stick to the wall, for this you need special glue and a standard set of tools:

  • Glue sometimes comes with fiberglass. If this is not the case, buy glass wallpaper glue - no other, including PVA or heavy wallpaper composition, is suitable;

Note. When calculating the required amount of glue, multiply the consumption declared for glass fiber by 1.5-2, since fiberglass is highly absorbent. In addition, the instruction requires that already glued canvases be smeared with adhesive on top.

  • To apply glue, which has a rather thick consistency, to the surface, it is best to use a wide brush;
  • Smoothing fiberglass is convenient with a special plastic wallpaper spatula, which experts call "shark fin";

Wallpaper spatula and the lines along which they expel air from under the canvas

  • You will also need a sharp paint knife and a long ruler or wide spatula for joining the canvases and trimming the laps.

Mounting technology

During self repair many questions often arise.

In our case, the most important are the following:

  • How to prepare the surface for fiberglass reinforcement;
  • How to glue it correctly;
  • Do I need to putty fiberglass before finishing.

We will respond in this order.

Preparing walls for reinforcement

Before gluing fiberglass to a wall or ceiling, the surface must be leveled with putty (see Leveling walls with putty according to all the rules). This stage can be skipped only if it has already been puttied earlier, the coating is even, durable.

The presence of small cracks with a thickness of not more than 1 mm is allowed.

  • Large cracks on the plastered surface are embroidered and sealed in several stages with putty or a special joint compound;
  • Joints between drywall sheets (see How to putty drywall joints according to technology) and other sheet facing materials, as well as the places of their attachment to the frame, are also puttied, and the seams are necessarily reinforced with sickle;

  • After the “patches” have dried, the entire surface is leveled with putty and polished until a flat plane is obtained;

Painting fiberglass- This is a material consisting of special glass - fibrous threads. The second name is a cobweb. Has certification, is done according to the Technical Specifications. It is produced by the principle of pressing, at the end of the work sheets are obtained, the density of which is 25 - 55 g / m2. They have properties:

  • Waterproof;
  • Not afraid of fire;
  • Resistant to chemicals;
  • Able to reinforce walls;
  • Do not attract dust;
  • Based on natural substances;
  • Pass air;
  • Vapor permeable;
  • Able to prevent the formation of fungal infections, mold;
  • Safe for health, anti-allergic.

In some qualities, they are similar to paper or glass. Holtex fiberglass does not have a clear relief and interlaced pattern. You can paint the surface an unlimited number of times.

Why do we need fiberglass gossamer if the walls are to be painted? In order not to prime, putty, level, it is enough to stick a "cobweb". Concrete, chipboard, hl, metal or plastic can be pasted over. "Gossamer" hides gaps, cracks, surface irregularities, and prevents the appearance of new flaws. Gives additional protection to walls before painting. Best suited for ceiling gluing.

Tip: if it became necessary to putty fiberglass, the best tool would be a wide spatula for the day of final work.

There are several types of fiberglass. The most durable is the cobweb. The density of the first economy option is 1 * 20 g per sq.m. The density of the second option contains 40 grams per sq.m. Heavy in weight but cheaper. The third type is the most durable - 1 * 50 g per sq.m. Able to hide volumetric imperfections of the walls. Used for large areas. Pricing is expensive.

Advantages and disadvantages of fiberglass gossamer

Like any material, x-glass "web" has its own characteristics, positive and negative qualities.

Technical characteristics and scope of the material

If you use painting fiberglass, then you will get the environmental friendliness of the room. Fiberglass gossamer for painting is produced by many manufacturers, which one to choose? Wellton (W30,W40,W50), Semtex, Holtex, glass, Weltex, Polinet are the best on the market.

The price for one roll is 500 - 800 rubles. The volume is 25 m2 or 50 m2. Universal width 1 m.

Painting fiberglass gossamer has an application in repair work oh walls, ceilings. Fiberglass, Velton, properly glued to plastered or plasterboard walls. Replaces finishing putty. It is glued with special glue, primed, puttied, dried, then painted with a roller.

If you avoid putty, then you need to prime with a liquid solution, paint. In this case, you need a lot of paint. What for? Because you need to paint 3-4 times. How to paint fiberglass gossamer is presented in the video:

How to glue painting fiberglass with photos and videos

Is it possible to glue wallpaper on fiberglass cobweb - this phrase is often heard by consultants of building stores. There is special technology for working with the material. Pass before gluing preparatory work. If the walls have small flaws, nothing should be repaired. In case of naivety of large cracks, treat with putty. After drying, go through the plaster. The result is a smooth surface treated with a primer.

Now let's start gluing. We apply glue abundantly on a dry wall or ceiling. It is recommended to apply approximately the size of one sheet. Thanks to a good fit, there will be no excess glue under the fiberglass. For convenience, cut the sheets in advance. It is important not to confuse front side. Gradually applying the side of the canvas to the wall, you need to smooth it with your hands or with a construction triangle. Remove air in the same way, excess glue after gluing. Next, remove the excess length, soak the sheet on top with glue. After some time, smooth the finished surface with a spatula again. The other sheet is glued with an overlap. Saturate the surface with the adhesive composition with an overlap of the finished glued sheet. For an even and inconspicuous seam, you need to cut a strip through both layers. After the joint is well smeared with glue. The result will be a smooth seam without sticky tapes. In the corners Oscar fiberglass is cut. It will take days to dry. Next comes the finishing. If the wall is to be painted, putty the surface 2 times. Under wallpaper gluing - 1 time.

Glue consumption per 1m2

Glue for fiberglass gossamer will need a special one, such as for fiberglass. Infrequently, manufacturers sell it in a fiberglass kit. For high-quality work, it is necessary to use the instructions correctly to avoid a liquid consistency. You need to buy glue with a margin, because you will need a lot of consumption. Painting fiberglass Oskar-profi does not like through air when drying. It is recommended to close doors and windows during operation. On average, 200 ml is used per liter of water. glue.

Ready-made glue based on pva, starch for sale. On average, a 15 kg bucket of glue goes to 25 m2. Accordingly, 0.4 kg of glue will go to 1 m2. You can determine exactly how much glue you need using the description on the package.

  • Liquid glue retains its qualities for 10 days after opening.
  • To prepare the dry mixture, it will take 15 minutes to swell.
  • High-quality glue does not stain, does not form stains, odorless.
  • Colorless when dry.
  • Contains antifungal components.
  • The composition contains chalk, for elastic application.
  • Completely dries in 2 days.

Such characteristics have trademarks: Kleo, Metylan, Quelyd, Pufas. Sold in liquid and dry form. Dry packaging of 250 and 500 grams. Liquid glue is produced in 5 kg, 10 kg, 15 kg.

Tip: It is not recommended to save and add more water, otherwise the material will not be durable, it will begin to flake off.

Photo gallery of finished works

If the basis for the wallpaper is created by interlacing fiberglass threads on looms, then the gossamer fiberglass is obtained by stamping. The arrangement of the threads in such a canvas is chaotic, they are randomly glued together with organic resins.

The material is produced with different degrees of density: from 25 to 65g/m2. It is very light, which is why it is called a cobweb. The least dense fiberglass is used for finishing ceilings, the heavier one is used to reinforce wall putty or as finishing material for painting. Painting fiberglass has no patterns, therefore it is a very good basis for repeated painting. different ways in order to obtain a smooth surface.

Scope of use

The web is easily attached to any surface, it is actively used in the process of new construction and for more convenient repair work. What is fiberglass for?

  1. Thanks to its excellent reinforcing properties, it effectively strengthens the surface for finishing. If low-quality drywall is used as a leveling material, then fiberglass will make such a surface durable and reliable. The use of fiberglass does not exempt the use of sickle when sealing joints.
  2. It can replace the last layer of starting putty or completely primary putty, depending on the condition of the substrate.
  3. The use of fiberglass helps to prevent the occurrence of cracks, shells. Makes the conditions for finishing more comfortable.
  4. The web is used as a solid base for painting, if it is intended to make the wall or ceiling smooth, without embossed patterns.
  5. It is very convenient to repair with fiberglass those sections of walls or partitions that are covered with small cracks.

In addition, fiberglass has found its application in the production wall panels, floor coverings. It is often used in roofing works and to protect pipelines drainage systems, and also as one of the components of the waterproofing cake.

How and what to glue the cobweb

The process of gluing fiberglass to the surface of the wall and ceiling is not much different from working with wallpaper and depends on the ultimate purpose of using this material. In any case, you first need to perform a basic alignment and rough preparation of the surface of the wall or ceiling.

Next, you need to perform priming with deep penetration impregnation and then decide what to glue the fiberglass onto. Correct selection glue - the procedure is very important, since the strength of the fixation and the service life of the finish depend on the quality of the adhesive composition. It is worth using only special formulations from well-known trademarks, for example, Wellton, Pufas, Bostik. They contain high quality components and are completely harmless to humans. Glue for fiberglass, when solidified, forms a film that prevents the formation of mold and fungal manifestations.

The sticker process consists of the following steps:

  • a roll of fiberglass - the cobwebs are unfolded and cut into canvases of the desired size;
  • an adhesive composition is applied to the surface of the wall or ceiling with a roller, spatula and brush;
  • the first canvas is glued from the corner to the center, it must be tightly smoothed and leveled with a plastic spatula;
  • webs of cobwebs are glued end-to-end; if it is necessary to make a small overlap, then after gluing it is cut with a sharp knife and the excess is removed to strengthen the reinforcing purpose of the material.

After the surface is completely finished with a cobweb, it is covered with a layer of the same glue, only in a diluted state. This layer serves good foundation for finishing puttying or painting in several steps. But by itself, it does not create an absolutely flat surface, since the glue easily penetrates between the glass fibers. Now you should wait for the wall or ceiling to dry out and you can proceed to further work.

Finishing

Fiberglass for painting can be used immediately after the glue has dried. However, this process cannot be called too simple in terms of labor intensity. You will need to apply several layers of paint to make the surface completely flat and smooth. Since the first layers of the coloring composition will penetrate between the threads of the cobweb, thereby creating uneven coloring.

However, you can go the other way - before painting, cover the fiberglass with one or two layers of finishing putty. It will hide all the bumps and save expensive paint. Properly applied fiberglass for putty will help create an ideal and very durable surface. It will protect it from the occurrence of shrinkage cracks and extend the life of the cladding.

When decorating the premises, many do not want to give up such familiar material as wallpaper, paper, vinyl, non-woven or some other. At the same time, they ask the question: is it possible to glue wallpaper on fiberglass? If the walls of your house are made of wood, lined PVC panels, composite boards such as chipboard or fiberboard, using heaters, then fiberglass can not only be used, but absolutely necessary. For a better fit of the wallpaper to the surface reinforced with fiberglass, it must be covered with putty. After drying, treat with a primer and you can stick any wallpaper. They will stay strong and last a long time.

When working with glass materials, one should not forget about safety rules. Work should be done with gloves and, preferably, use goggles and a respirator. This is necessary so that the glass pile does not accidentally get into the respiratory tract and eyes.

Fiberglass has found its application in the construction and repair of buildings, as a material that reinforces enclosing surfaces used to insulate structures. At its core, it is a reinforcing element, replacing steel reinforcement.

Fiberglass - what is this material

Reinforcing material - fiberglass used in the decoration of ceilings and walls, is produced in the form of sheets of non-woven fiberglass. It is often called a "spider line" because of the minimum thickness of the fibers and is often combined with the concept of fiberglass and fiberglass wallpaper. Although it's completely two various material according to its characteristics, production method and field of application. If fiberglass wallpaper is made on weaving equipment, then the "spider line" is produced by pressing. But these two materials also have common characteristics:

  • they perfectly tolerate the effects of a humid environment;
  • anti-allergenic;
  • produced from environmentally friendly raw materials;
  • not afraid of high temperatures;
  • not electrostatic;
  • hygroscopic and breathable;
  • not susceptible to mold and various pathogenic fungi;
  • can be dyed multiple times.

Fiberglass is produced in various thicknesses, on which its density depends. The minimum density is 20 grams per one square meter, maximum 50 grams. A material with a thinner thickness is used when finishing surfaces with coloring compositions, a denser fiberglass is used when surfaces require leveling and strengthening. On sale, fiberglass is presented in rolls of meter width, 20 or 50 meters long.

What is fiberglass for?

First of all, non-woven fiberglass material is used to enhance the bearing capacity of enclosing surfaces (walls, ceilings), when there are already significant cracks or to prevent their occurrence. Especially important is the use of fiberglass in new-built houses, when shrinkage processes constantly affect the enclosing elements of the building.

It is also good to use reinforcing material in old buildings, when the plaster on the walls and ceilings is already weakly holding. When leveling walls with drywall or installing suspended multi-tiered ceiling structures, the use of a "spider web" will be more than appropriate. The fiberglass sticker will help to avoid frequent repairs and guarantee the absence of cracks on the surfaces treated with this method. And the surfaces can be:

  • brick;
  • concrete;
  • wooden;
  • plastic;
  • metal.

Considering that the material made from fiberglass is not afraid of water, it can be used for wall and ceiling decoration in areas such as bathrooms, saunas and swimming pools, if finishing there will be painting. Fiberglass under the wallpaper is not glued.

The walls finished with fiberglass will not be afraid of the claws of pets, mechanical impact in the form of blows, accidental contact with chemically active substances.

In addition to using fiberglass on walls and ceilings, it can be used as one of the layers of a noise or waterproofing "pie" when installing floors and mastic roofs.

How to glue fiberglass on the walls

First of all, it is necessary to determine the front and back sides of the material. As a rule, the outer side in the roll is represented by the wrong side. If you feel the material, then on the one hand it is smoother, on the other fleecy. The wrong side has a fleecy texture, respectively, the front surface has a smooth texture. Gluing should be done with the wrong side to the surfaces for better adhesion. But, even if you mix it up, nothing terrible will happen if the sticker process itself is done correctly and efficiently.

Only the surface of the walls is treated with glue; fiberglass material does not need to be coated with glue. Previously, the walls are cleaned of dust, dirt and primed either with special compounds or with an adhesive solution of low concentration. Deep cracks and depressions are sealed with plaster and again treated with a primer. After the primer dries, you can start gluing the "cobwebs".

It is necessary to use when working protective equipment- gloves, a respirator and work clothes to protect the skin of the body. The smallest particles of fiberglass cause irritation on the skin and in the respiratory organs.

How to glue fiberglass for painting

The material is cut into strips corresponding to the height of the walls with the addition of 10-15 cm in length so that it is possible to combine the pattern of fibers at the joints. The "cobweb" panels are glued only "butt". It is allowed to overlap the material at the joints if it is required to paste over curved surfaces or structures of complex shape, as well as if the material in the roll already has damaged edges. Like ordinary wallpaper, the first panel is glued strictly vertically using a plumb line or building level. A piece of material is applied to the wall smeared with glue and smoothed out with a roller or a special spatula without much effort.

If necessary, stickers using the "overlap" method, the edges of adjacent panels are glued to each other to such a width that later the damaged edge can be removed. Immediately, without waiting for the glue to dry, and using a clerical knife, two edges are cut. Gently lifting the cut places of the panels, remove the damaged edges of the upper and lower panels. The joint is primed with glue and again smoothed with a spatula or roller and left until the glue is completely dry.

How to glue fiberglass on the ceiling

The preparation of the ceiling is carried out according to the same algorithm as the walls. But for pasting the ceiling surface, a “spider line” of low density, a maximum of 25 g / kV, is most often used. m. High-density material simply may not stay on the ceiling. Start the pasting process from the window in the opposite direction. All windows and doors must be closed to prevent drafts.

The adhesive composition is applied with a brush or roller to the ceiling surface, after which pieces of fiberglass are applied to the ceiling and smoothed out with a dry, clean roller or wallpaper spatula. Paint the glued "cobweb" in two layers, taking a break in work to dry each layer. With this method of sticker, the texture of the fiberglass, the pattern of the fibers will be visible.

If you want to make the ceiling as smooth and shiny as possible, a layer of putty is applied over the glued material. After drying, it is carefully polished with the finest sandpaper so as not to affect the fibers of the "cobweb".

To make the joints of the fiberglass material invisible, the panels are glued in two ways:

  1. The first - with a gap at the junction of a couple of millimeters. This clearance is then carefully puttied and sanded. After applying the paint composition, the joint will be almost invisible if you look at it directly. If the eye falls on the joint from the side, then dark stripes are visible for the width of the applied putty layer. This is explained by the fact that when sanding the putty, not only the texture of the material is violated, but also the fiberglass itself, as a result of which light is not reflected from the surface treated in this way.
  2. The second method consists in gluing fiberglass without leaving a gap, directly "in the joint" or even with an overlap. But even with this method, the junctions of two adjacent strips of material can be seen when looking directly at the ceiling.

It happens that after drying on the glued surface, air bubbles. In such places, the fiberglass is carefully cut out, trying not to damage the base base, and a new piece is glued.

What glue to glue fiberglass

Fiberglass material is glued with special compounds designed specifically for it. The manufacturer must indicate this in general information on the package. Experts recommend using Wellton, Oscar, Oscar Pigment or KLEO Ultra glue. The compositions are sold both dry and ready-to-use.

If Cleo Ultra glue is used, it is recommended to add PVA to it in a ratio of 1 to 6. This will increase the reliability and durability of the glued fiberglass.

Fiberglass paint

When gluing a "cobweb" for the purpose of its further coloring, it is necessary to choose a coloring composition. It is recommended to use water-based formulations:

  • latex paints;
  • acrylic;
  • silicone.

The most affordable will be acrylic paint, creating a matte surface, latex, with which you can make the surface glossy, is more expensive, but its quality characteristics are higher. The most expensive is silicone-based paint, which has the ability to repel dust and dirt. It practically does not have the disadvantages inherent in the first two. The surface painted with this composition is easy to wet cleaning.

How to glue fiberglass on drywall

Before sticking the "spider line" on the drywall surface, it is treated with putty, applying the composition with a thin continuous layer. If the putty is applied in separate places, then in the future, after painting, the surface may be heterogeneous in color.

In this case, all joints, places for attaching sheets with self-tapping screws, and other flaws in the drywall surface must be pre-glued special tape- "sickle" and puttied flush with the main sheets. If this is not done, then all the irregularities will be clearly visible on the painted surface. In addition, self-tapping screws that are not hidden under a layer of putty, over time, under the influence of water contained in the paint compositions, can appear on the finished wall or ceiling with rusty spots, which will be difficult to get rid of.

After the putty layer has dried, the surface is cleaned with fine sandpaper. This is followed by the stage of priming with a deep penetration composition in two layers. Moreover, the second time the primer is applied no earlier than the first layer dries.

Fiberglass is glued to the surface of GKL sheets in the same way as on all other surfaces. Myself technological process is no different from similar work on the surfaces of walls or ceilings. It is only necessary to wait for the complete drying of the primer layer.
