Calculate the number of tiles for the bathroom. Programs for calculating tiles in the bathroom. Description of the methodology and important nuances of calculation for bathrooms. Calculation of ceramic consumption in square meters

Many rooms in a house or apartment are traditionally or at the request of the owners tiled with ceramic coating, and it is very important to know how to calculate how many tiles you need.

If you are going to make a beautiful apron in the kitchen, laying it out of pastel-colored tiles, you can literally calculate the amount of material on your fingers, only having decided on the number of rows. In this case, most likely, it will be possible to completely avoid any costs, especially if you use square tiles. However, with full wall or floor cladding, certain difficulties arise. The fact is that in addition to the main type of tiles, there are also curb ones. Ceramic elements are not only square, but also rectangular, as well as multilateral and figured, with a complex patterned contour.

Provided that the first two types of form factor are laid in even rows, it will be quite easy to correctly calculate the number of tiles for a kitchen or bathroom. It is enough to know the square of the surface to be finished and the area of the ceramic element to determine how much material is needed on the walls or floor. But it is not always preferred the simplest circuit cladding, it is enough to include a couple of borders in it, and the calculations will become much more complicated. Another problem will be added when tiles of different formats and all kinds of decorative elements.

You will face certain difficulties if you want to lay out the floor or walls with different types of multifaceted ceramic elements. The geometric pattern will turn out beautiful, but to determine the required number of details, you will have to calculate the area of each figure, as well as determine the percentage of its content in the overall composition. The same applies to tiles with a complex contour, here the task is complicated by the fact that for a shape that is far from geometric, it is rather problematic to calculate the area. Add to any of the options the presence of plumbing and communications in the room, as well as lighting on the walls, and it will become clear that for each individual case you need to look for your own approach, how to calculate the tile.

The shape of the bathroom, and in some cases the kitchen, is not necessarily perfectly rectangular. So get ready by dividing his gender into simple geometric figures. For the most part, it will be all the same rectangles and triangles. But in the typical case, when the lengths of the opposite walls are equal, and all the angles are 90 degrees, it is enough to multiply only 2 values - the dimensions of the adjacent sides.

Then, having found out the quadrature of the surface, we determine the area of the tile, and since we are looking for the simplest version of the cladding, we have a rectangular tile and it is enough to multiply its adjacent faces. Thus, the easiest way to calculate ceramic tiles for a floor is to apply the formula N = (AB) / (ab). Here N- amount, A and B- adjacent walls of the room with a common angle, a and b- adjacent sides of the tile.

It is possible to determine the amount of material by the area of one ceramic element for tiles of any regular geometric shape, for which there are corresponding formulas.

Suppose you decide to decorate the bathroom with cladding using not only ordinary tiles, but also borders. In addition, for greater effect, it was decided to lay, alternating rows of ceramic elements with the same width, but different heights. In this case, even if only 2 different sizes are involved, it will not be possible to determine the total amount of material, taking into account the borders, using the above formula. Therefore, we use another method, which, however, begins in the same way as the first one - by determining the quadrature of the surface to be lined with the deduction of the area of the door and (if any) window opening. To count the material on the floor, it is enough to know its length.

Next, you should take all the elements that will be located in alternating rows one above the other and lay them out in a vertical column for the entire height of the finish. We determine the total area of the tiles, taking into account the gaps that are allocated to the seams, and then divide by the result the quadrature of the surfaces to be trimmed and find out the required number. However, this method is not ideal, since small errors occur: where the window and the door are located, only the tiles will remain in the columns, laid on the lintels and the wall under the window opening. Therefore, you can use a slightly different and more accurate method.

We determine the perimeter of the bathroom or kitchen minus the door and window opening. We divide the resulting value by the width of the column into which we have folded tiles of different heights. Thus, we learned the number of rows in that part of the room where there are no openings. For jumpers above the door and window, as well as for the section of the wall under the latter, we lay out the columns and count their number on these segments separately. Further, it will not be difficult to determine the amount of material of each individual size by folding similar tiles in one vertical row and multiplying by the number of columns in the perimeter.

The walls and floor look very nice, on which they laid ceramic tiles with a figured contour. However, it is difficult to come up with enough reliable way correctly calculate patterned tiles. Indeed, if there are no edges, and the contour is various smooth or sharp bends, alternating with all kinds of angles, it is almost impossible to calculate the area of the facing element.

It is very good if the manufacturer indicated on the packaging how many square centimeters on the finished surface the tile will cover. But such information may not be available if you were not interested in advance. Therefore, the only available way is to practice drawing. First you need to take paper in a box, or better - graph paper. We draw on it an exact plan of the room where the decoration will be performed, on a convenient scale. And then we carefully depict, also in due proportion to the real size, a curly tile. We draw the cladding according to the scheme you have chosen.

If all the elements are of the same color, then upon completion of the drawing, you are unlikely to have a question about how to calculate the tile, it will be enough to count the tiles piece by piece. Separate fragments are counted in pairs, taking each for a whole facing element. However, it may be that for finishing you want to use 2 or even 3-4 colors of tiles. In this case, we turn the plan of the bathroom or kitchen into a coloring book, marking on it where this or that tinting will be located. Next, we count the monochromatic elements, and thus find out how many assorted tiles are needed on the wall or floor. This method is also suitable for determining the amount of material in a complex mosaic laying of conventional rectangular ceramic elements using a large number of colors.

When purchasing materials for repairs, you need to know exactly how much this or that material is needed. If you buy more, money will be wasted, but if you buy less, then the repair will have to be suspended in order to buy the required amount. Some materials are made in limited series, and there is a chance that you simply will not find the desired pattern or texture. The purchase of tiles is no exception: an accurate calculation will allow you to complete the work on time and at no additional cost.

Peculiarities

Calculating the required number of tiled squares is not an easy process. It is necessary to carefully make all measurements and calculations, depending on the characteristics of the room, the laying method and the size of the tile itself. You should not count on the fact that tiles can always be bought in addition, because even different batches of the same type may differ in shade or texture.

To ensure that the tile is exactly enough for the entire surface, you should immediately buy a little more than it turned out according to the calculation, since in some areas of the room the tiles need to be joined and cut, adjusting the ornament.

When calculating, it must be taken into account that the seam between the floor tile and the wall material does not remain, so that irregularities are not visible.

What is important to consider when calculating?

To begin with, the total surface area is calculated on which tiles of the same type will be laid. If it's a floor or ceiling, you need to multiply the width by the length; if it's walls, then you need to multiply their length by the height. Measurements are taken using an ordinary tape measure, the data is recorded on a piece of paper. In order to avoid a mistake or reveal curvature, you can take several measurements on different parts of the wall or floor. It is better to calculate the area in square meters, and then divide it by the area of one ceramic tiles, whose dimensions are also converted to meters. Thus, the minimum amount of material will be obtained without taking into account trimmings, matching the pattern, or taking into account marriage.

Laying tiles diagonally allows you to hide even significant defects in the floor and walls, however, when calculating laying in this way, it is necessary to lay a larger percentage on scraps and waste: 15-17%, depending on whether it is necessary to adjust the pattern on the tile. A private option for the diagonal placement of tiles is the "herringbone". There are two options for such laying: in one, the first tile is laid parallel to the walls and the laying goes diagonally; in another, the first tile goes at an angle and the laying lies perpendicular to the walls.

In cases of laying paving slabs it is best to reserve 10 percent for defects during transport and installation. Such a tile is quite fragile and easily splits into pieces. It is also much more difficult to calculate the exact dimensions of the area of the driveway or path to the gazebo, because this is not a square room, clearly limited by walls, but an object of complex shape.

Simultaneously with the calculation of the amount of ceramics, you can also find out the required amount of grout for tile joints - fugue. You can calculate the approximate amount of fugue, as well as tiles, using special online calculators. It is necessary to enter already calculated data on the area into them, and the program itself will calculate everything, taking into account the percentage of defects. Or you can use various calculation formulas, according to which the average fugue consumption is 1.6 kg / m3. Often, manufacturers write the average consumption of tile adhesive and grout directly on the package.

This calculation can also be used, but for this it will be necessary to make it right in the store.

How to calculate?

The easiest way to calculate the number of tiles is, of course, to use online calculators to calculate. However, even if such a program is used, it is necessary to correctly measure all the necessary quantities, and the Internet may not be at hand, so it is better to know and be able to use several types of calculation.

Standard count

by the most simple option finishing is a regular square tile of the same color or with an incompatible pattern (for example, marbled or wood). In the case of laying such material, you can start work from any angle and do not select the position of each tile before applying the adhesive.

Such ceramics can be cut from all sides and any of its trimmings can be used.

 • Step 1. The length of the walls is measured and the total length of the perimeter is calculated. If the room has a complex shape, all ledges and niches must be taken into account.
 • Step 2 Height is measured, all obtained values are rounded to the nearest centimeter.
 • Step 3 The area of windows and doors is subtracted from the obtained value, since these surfaces are not tiled. If tiles are laid on the ceiling, then the ceiling area is calculated.
 • Step 4 If the decorative bathroom screen is also decorated with tiles, then its area also needs to be calculated. And if the bath is installed near the wall, then the surfaces that will not be visible after installation, in order to save money, can not be tiled.
 • Step 5 Lay the percentage of marriage and waste during installation. It will be enough to increase the resulting figure by 10 percent to take into account all the factors that can affect the consumption of material: the work of a beginner or a professional, the presence of pipes and thresholds, a checkerboard or diagonal layout.

Example: There is a room with the following dimensions:

 • 2 m - the length of one wall;
 • 2.5 m - the length of the second wall;
 • 2.8 m - ceiling height;
 • door 2 m high and 0.8 m wide;
 • window 0.8 m long and 0.8 m high.

Thus, the area of the floor and all four walls is obtained: 2 * 2.5 + 2 * 2 * 2.8 + 2 * 2.5 * 2.8 = 30.2 m2.

The window area is 0.8 * 0.8 = 0.64 m2, and the door area is 2 * 0.8 = 1.6 m2.

Now, the area of one door and one window is subtracted from the resulting number, which are 1.6 m2 and 0.64 m2, respectively: 30.2–1.6–0.64 = 27.96 m2. The decorative bathroom screen will not be decorated with tiles, so its area is not needed. If we add another 10 percent to this number, we get a finished area of 30.76 m2.

The area of one square of medium-sized tiles (30x30 cm) is 0.09 m2. If you divide the resulting surface area by the area of one square, you get 342 whole tiles. And already, depending on how many tiles are in one package, the number of packages that will be needed for facing the floor and walls of this room is calculated.

With custom fit

If the bathroom uses a tile with a border insert, or a tile that is different in size and material, then calculate in a simple way will not work. First you need to also calculate the quadrature of the walls and floor, minus the area of windows and doors. Then it is necessary to lay out all the elements, alternating in rows from the bottom to the top, in one even column for the entire height of the finishing section.

We measure the width of the resulting column and divide the perimeter by the resulting value, thus obtaining the number of such columns in a complete installation. Next, we determine the total area of tiles of each type in such a column and multiply by the number of columns obtained in the previous step. And at the end, we already add 15 percent for marriage and fitting the pattern. This method is not very accurate, because it does not take into account that at the locations of windows and doors, the columns will be incomplete and an unequal number will be excluded from them. different kind tiles.

Another calculation option is more accurate. It is necessary to calculate at once the entire area on which the material of one type will be laid. The result obtained is divided by the area of one tile of the desired size and the number of tiles that will cover this area is obtained.

For this option of calculating the amount of tiles, it will be enough to take into account 10 percent for fitting and marriage.

Diverse product options

There is a tile of a rather complex shape in the form of flowers and various patterns. It is almost impossible to calculate the area of one such tile due to the combination of smooth lines with sharp corners and cutouts. Sometimes the manufacturer indicates on the packaging how much area one such tile covers, but often there is simply no such information. In order not to purchase such tiles "by eye", you should draw an exact plan of the room in which the installation will be carried out. Then carefully depict one such tile in the appropriate scale, after which you can draw a complete cladding according to the scheme that was originally chosen.

If only one color is used, then it remains just to count the resulting number of elements. If several colors are used, then you will have to color the drawing with the corresponding colors, and calculate how many tiles of a particular color will turn out. Then you need to add 10-15 percent for marriage and fitting.

This method is also used in the case of using a decor that differs in size from the main tile.

It is necessary to first apply decor elements to the diagram, and then determine how many main tiles will fit at the intersection with them, and subtract them from the total volume.

A separate calculation complexity appears when using tiles with facet. Facets are bevels located along the perimeter of the tile. Such products look more expressive and voluminous than ordinary flat squares. Facets look especially good on tiles that have a smooth mirror surface. A wall lined with such a tile will visually expand a small room and evenly scatter light around the perimeter. The difficulty lies in the fact that this type of tile cannot be cut so as not to spoil appearance. The floor and corners of the room must be perfectly even, and the size of the material must be selected so that only the whole number of required squares of tiles is obtained.

When counting tiles by the piece, it is necessary to count all cut tiles in the corners or along the walls as whole. Otherwise, the risk increases that the planned material will not be enough for surface cladding.

Before laying the tiles, it is necessary to level the surface of the walls, floor and ceiling, if tiles are also laid on it. For this, various self-leveling mixtures and plaster solutions are used. First, all leveling work is done, all wet surfaces dry, and only then the area is measured.

To save more or create original design the bathroom can only be lined with a "wet area". In places of constant contact of water with walls and floors, tiles are laid, and the rest of the surface is treated with moisture-resistant paint or mounted plastic panels. In this case, for the calculation it is necessary to take only the area of this “wet zone”.

If the area of one square of tiles is not yet known, you can simply calculate the surface area that will be tiled. Most often, in stores, tiles are packaged in a pack covering an area of 0.5 m2 or 1 m2, so it will not be difficult to calculate how many packages are required.

Specialization: master of internal and outdoor decoration(plaster, putty, tile, drywall, lining, laminate and so on). In addition, plumbing, heating, electrical, conventional cladding and balcony extensions. That is, repairs in an apartment or house were done on a turnkey basis with all necessary types works.

To begin with, you can use the bathroom tile calculator, but I will warn you right away - this will give you the most inaccurate result. And all the flood that such programs are not able to take into account the nuances.

However, making such calculations yourself is easy and simple, and they will be the most accurate, up to one unit of a tile (although a couple of extra pieces will still be needed in reserve). I suggest you study a short course of study, more precisely, an understanding of the very principle of calculation.

Calculation of tiles according to the size of the room

What to Consider

In a room with the same quadrature, a different amount of material may be needed. Therefore, the question of how to calculate the number of tiles in the bathroom also depends on the number and location of plumbing units and pipelines.

There are several nuances that you should pay attention to, since it is most accurate to calculate how many tiles you need in the bathroom, you can only take them into account. First of all, in order to understand how to calculate the area of a bathroom for tiles, you need to accurately determine the installation of plumbing fixtures and the size of the tile itself.

Let's get started with this:

 • the very first thing you need to consider is how the tile will look in those places that are most visible. As a rule, they are located under the ceiling (top row), as well as above the bathrooms, for example, above the bathroom;
 • but here the catch is that you can set the height of the same bath arbitrarily, but changing the height of the ceiling is much more difficult. Therefore, the focus should be on the level of the ceilings;
 • under the ceiling, even if they are suspended, it is desirable to have a whole, uncut row. So, the calculation of the number of pieces vertically should come from there;

 • this means that we measure the number of tiles from the stream to the first row (usually, these are 8 pieces of tiles 200 × 300 mm), and leave the bottom row for later;
 • but it also happens when you can fit into an integer number of tiles, then you can also make an uncut row above the bathroom, as shown in the bottom photo;

 • on the walls where the bathroom will be pressed, calculation tiles you shouldn’t do it for the bathroom - you can leave an empty space there, since no one needs cladding in an inconspicuous place;
 • the same can be said about the tiles on the floor - tiles are not needed under the bathroom and no instructions require them to be installed there. The bath fits perfectly on the screed, especially since it is easier to adjust its height ;
 • some also save tiles under the cabinets, but I don’t advise doing this, it’s too “slippery place” - after all, the doors open and everything is visible there;
 • another point in the question of how to calculate the tiles more economically is a shower cabin or a box, although I don’t quite understand the point of installing a box in a tiled room - this is just an absurdity or a thoughtless waste of money;
 • under the pallet, tiles are not needed, but it depends on the desire of the owner (the area is small), but why put a box where you still need to put tiles on the walls, since they will be noticeable ?! I repeat once again - this is absurdity and it is unlikely that anyone will find arguments to convince me otherwise;

 • one more thing, how to calculate the consumption of a tile, is the presence or absence of it on, but there usually the calculation is clean, without any resets;
 • and finally, these are boxes that can be in any bathroom, although again I think that they a large number of- this is the negligence of a plumber. They are needed only where vertical or horizontal pipe impossible to hide in a shtroba.

Calculation examples

As they say in Odessa: “What will I get from this?”. In our case, it means how to correctly calculate the tiles for a certain layout of plumbing units? Let's start with the total area.

Imagine that our area has 3.0 × 2.5 m - this, of course, private house, but for example there is no difference. We will take the height of the walls to the draft ceiling 2.6m, therefore, we will get the whole room 3.0 × 2.5x 2.6m. The cubic capacity will be of little interest to us, since the tiles should be counted according to the area.

Again, let's move on to abstract images and by default we will take a 200x300 mm tile, since it is used most often. We will have spacer crosses with a thickness of 3 mm (also the most popular).

I will say right away that the thickness of the seam should not be taken into account - this, of course, also applies to determining the quantity, but even the most experienced tiler can have force majeure. Any of the tiles may fall and break, or simply burst when cutting.

Then one row will require 3000/200 = 15 pieces exactly. But here, for symmetry, you need the width of the seam. This means that between fifteen pieces you will get 13 seams of 3 mm, in total, 13 * 3 = 39 mm (we consider 40 mm). This means that the extreme tiles will need to be cut 2-3 cm each, leaving 180 mm each, although their number will remain the same - 15 pieces.

Next, we move on to the vertical - everything is calculated in the same way. And if we have a room height of 260 cm (2600 mm), then we need 2600/300 = 8.6 pieces for this. That is, the first row will be slightly more than half. A little wrong!

The price of the material will decrease if we make the correct calculation:

 1. first, we have seams;
 2. and, secondly, it is not necessary to put the tiles right up to the ceiling, because there will still be floor tiles below.

Therefore, the number of copies can be reduced to 8.5 pieces, then the bottom row will go one for two. So, at the bottom you will need not 15, but only 8 pieces!

Now, let's define areas that can be skipped, especially if it's an expensive tile, like 3d. Since it is not needed under the bathroom, then its quantity can be calculated from the total quadrature. For example, let's take a bathtub with length/width/height dimensions of 1700x700x570 mm (this is an ordinary standard bathroom).

So, if we have a height of 570 mm, then the row of tiles above the bathroom will start (third row 150 + 300 = 450 mm) from 570-450 = 220 mm, that is, almost from a whole row.

We do the same with the end and side in width - we calculate the absence of tiles on this segment. If you want to tile the bathtub, and not install a plastic screen there, then you should not do such calculations - everything will remain in place.

In order not to stop work during the renovation of the bathroom due to a lack of material or not to think about where to put its excess, it is important to correctly calculate the need for tiles. There are several calculation methods, depending on the type of tile laying and differing from each other in accuracy.

With a monotonous finish of the bathroom, when the same type of tiling is used for facing all surfaces (straight, diagonal or offset), the need for tiles is calculated in square meters or by the piece.

The amount of ceramics necessary for the implementation of complex artistic cladding must be calculated separately for each independent fragment of the room decoration. Let's consider these methods.

Calculation of ceramic consumption in square meters

When choosing a monotonous type of tile laying, dimensions are measured: length, width, height - rooms in meters to the nearest hundredth (centimeter), rounding fractions of a centimeter up.

Calculation of the cost of finishing the floor

To calculate the quadrature of the floor, multiply the metric values of the length and width of the floor, after which the result is rounded up to integer units. If laying is carried out in a direct way or "with an offset", 10% must be added to the amount obtained. If ceramics are laid diagonally, 15% is added to the floor area.

For example:

The area of the room with a length of 4.21 meters and a width of 2.34 meters is:

 • 4, 21 x 2, 34 = 9, 8514 sq. m. Rounded to the nearest 10 sq. meters.

Adding 10%:

 • 10 x 1.1 = 11 sq.m.

With the diagonal method, you need to add 15%, it turns out: 10 x 1, 15 = 11.5 square meters. ≈ 12 sq.m.

Calculation of material for wall cladding

The square of the surface of the bathroom walls is calculated by multiplying the perimeter of the room and its height, the resulting value is also rounded up to integer units:

(4, 21 + 2, 34 + 4, 21 + 2, 34) x 2, 68 = 35, 108 sq. m. ≈ 36 sq. meters.

Then measure the height and width doorway in meters to the nearest centimeter, rounding down fractions of a centimeter. Multiplying these values, get the area of the doorway, rounding it down to tenths of a square meter.

For example:

 • the area of a doorway measuring 2.1 x 0.8 is 1.68 sq. m. ≈ 1.6 sq.m.;
 • from the surface area of the walls subtract the area of the doorway 36-1.6 m = 34.4 square meters.

10 or 15% is added to the result, depending on the type of tiling and rounded up to integer values:

 • direct or offset method: 34.4 sq.m. x 1, 1 = 37.84 sq. m. ≈ 38 sq.m.
 • diagonal way: 34.4 sq.m. x 1, 15 = 39, 56 sq. m. ≈ 40 sq.m.

If you do not clad the walls for bathroom, then the area of this hidden surface is also subtracted from the area of the walls, but this savings leads to a weakening of the waterproofing of this area behind the bathroom, which is fraught with damage to the finish in the adjacent room by seeping condensate.

Having calculated how many square meters of tiles are needed for repairs, they purchase finishing material. The packaging of ceramics indicates how many square meters of cladding it contains. To calculate the required number of packs correctly, the need for tiles in square meters must be divided by the quadrature indicated on the package and rounded up to integer values.

Calculation of the consumption of tiles per piece

Piece counting has a smaller error, but this advantage also has a downside - with this method there is no material left in case of accidental damage to the tile during installation or unforeseen spot repairs of the cladding.

With this method, measurements of the dimensions of the room are also made, but in centimeters, rounding fractions of a centimeter up to integer values. For example, a length of 420.5 cm is rounded to 421 cm, a width of 233.7 cm to 234 cm, and a height of 267.6 cm to 268 cm.

Then a certain tile is looked after in the distribution network and the dimensions of one tile are measured. For example, the tile chosen for the walls has a width of 15 cm, a length of 20 cm, and ceramics of 20 x 20 cm were chosen for the floor. To calculate how many pieces of tiles are needed for wall cladding, the consumption must be calculated for each wall separately.

Piece calculation of ceramics for walls

In our example, the bathroom has two walls with dimensions of 421 x 268 cm and 234 x 268 cm. If the tiles are laid vertically, then 268:20 = 13.4 pieces will fit from floor to ceiling. With a minimum width of tile joints, this value should be rounded up to 14 products.

In length, 421:15 = 28.06 pieces will fit on one wall, and 234:15 = 15.6 pieces on the second. Let's round up to 28 and 16 products.

We consider how many pieces will be needed for finishing:

 • 14 x 28 = 392 pieces; multiply by two walls, we get 784 products.
 • 14 x 16 = 224 pieces; we also multiply by two walls, we get 448 products.

On vertical surfaces, 1232 pieces will be required, but from this amount you need to subtract the number of tiles corresponding to the area of the doorway. Suppose doorway has dimensions of 210 x 80 cm. Its height will fit 210:20 = 10.5 pcs. Round down to 10. The width of the opening will fit 80:15 = 5, 33 pcs. Identical round up to 5 products.

Therefore, the area of the doorway corresponds to the area of 10x5=50 pieces. tiles to be subtracted from the total for walls: 1232–50 = 1182 pieces.

Piece calculation of ceramics on the floor

Let's calculate how many products of the 20x20 cm format will require floor cladding with dimensions of 421x234 cm:

 • in length 421 cm: 20 cm = 21.05 ≈ 21 pieces;
 • wide 234 cm: 20 cm = 11.7 ≈ 12 pcs.

Multiplying these values gives the number of tiles per floor in pieces:

 • 21 x 12 = 252 items.

Calculation of ceramic consumption for complex artistic finishing

If it is decided to make the decoration of the bathroom exclusive, the calculation of ceramics is done in a combined way - by the footage and by the piece. On horizontal and vertical surfaces to be decorated, it is necessary to make markings according to a previously developed cladding sketch map. By this time, usually desired views ceramics are already scheduled for purchase, and the format facing material, which will get off the bathroom, is known.

Marking is carried out with construction chalk, it starts from sections of the main plan, which will be occupied by artistic panels and ornaments, trimming of which is not allowed for aesthetic reasons. How many tiles are needed for facing such surfaces is easy to calculate piece by piece.

Then they calculate the consumption of tiles for the frieze (if available on the sketch map) and lining under the background for the panel. How much material is needed for laying the frieze can also be calculated by the piece method.

The choice of the method for calculating the amount of ceramics when decorating the main background depends on the cost of the material, since not everyone plans to purchase excess expensive tiles.

Results

The accuracy of calculating the consumption of ceramics when finishing a bathroom depends on the pricing policy. If after the end of the work there is a meter or two of facing material left, do not rush to call it a calculation error. This surplus will be indispensable for unforeseen spot repairs of the cladding. It is much worse when there was not enough material, and this type is no longer on sale.

The tile is the most suitable material for, but also quite expensive. Therefore, in order not to have to buy it in addition or throw away the excess, you need to correctly calculate the tiles for the bathroom, and for this we can use special or online calculation and layout programs.

The correct calculation of the tiles during the repair allows you to save not only the time spent on the purchase of missing materials, which, it is worth saying, may not be in the store, but also the money that will be spent on surpluses. And in order to avoid these troubles, there are several ways. A classic and accessible to everyone method of calculating the material on paper and a more modern and convenient one is laying tiles online.

But in each case there are certain nuances that need to be taken into account in order to calculate the material as accurately as possible.

The scheme of laying tiles is important in the further calculation of its quantity. Depending on the location of the seam between the tiles, several types of layouts are distinguished:

 • Standard or basic ("seam to seam").
 • Diagonal, herringbone, labyrinth, dressing, chess, run-up, carpet or modular layout, there are a lot of options.

How to properly position tiles?

From an aesthetic point of view, it is important to consider the layout method, the location of the decor and color combinations in accordance with the area of the room. Finishing can visually change the proportions of the room.
In order to visually enlarge the room, light-colored tiles are used, a horizontal laying method with a transverse placement of the pattern.

Bathroom tile options

You can increase the height by vertical layout, using contrasting stripes, vertical arrangement of friezes, and in this case it is better to place the decoded elements just above eye level. Dark-colored tiles will visually reduce the room. When choosing the color of floor tiles, it is important to consider that a dark floor and a light ceiling will visually enlarge the space, and vice versa.

It is important that the tile laying system be completed with a minimum amount of trimming. This will not only facilitate installation work, but also visually make the finish correct and more beautiful.

Trimming on the walls is placed symmetrically between the corners. On the floor, the drawing is laid out in such a way that solid elements are located in the visible zone, and all trimming goes to the least visible sides or is hidden under interior items. In the matter of design, online tile layout will be invaluable help, which will help create the most accurate visual model of the future finish.

Before performing the calculation of the tiles, it is important to make the correct measurement of the room. Perform it after the walls are prepared for laying tiles. Each side is always measured separately, even if the room is of the correct shape. Round the resulting value up. The size of the doorway, windows is subtracted from the total measurement. Sometimes areas that will not be finished, for example, hidden behind the bathroom, are also taken away from the total area.

We measure the area of walls and floors

When a room of complex configuration has protruding elements, niches or boxes, their measurements are taken separately. It is better to record all the results by drawing up a plan of the room on a scale, on which the location of plumbing, furniture and other interior details is noted. For a more accurate calculation, it is better to convert all numbers to millimeters.

Methods for calculating tiles

There is no single universal calculation scheme. In each individual case, it all depends on the features of the layout of the room, the size of the tile, and the layout of the tile in the bathroom is taken into account. And depending on this, choose the most suitable of the three calculation methods.

 • Project sketch;
 • Formula calculations;
 • Layout and calculation of tiles in the bathroom using a computer program.

Important! It is worth considering that in case of errors in the calculations, it can be problematic to buy additional tiles, because different batches of the same collection often have visible differences in shades, ornament geometry and some other technical parameters.

Sketching and piece-by-piece calculation of tiles

The most reliable results can be obtained by sketching the project on paper. For these purposes, any ordinary notebook sheet in a cage or on graph paper is suitable. The room is drawn to scale, each wall and floor separately. They mark the location of the tile, starting from its size and method of installation. Tiles of various shades, decorative elements, if used, the frieze is shaded with colored pencils for convenience. Such a project will allow not only to imagine how the room will look after finishing, but also to calculate the amount of material as accurately as possible piece by piece.

Formula calculations

In this case, the amount of material is determined based on the size of the room and the material. Let's say you need to calculate the number of tiles to cover the floor of a standard bath. To do this, you need to know the total quadrature of the bathroom, which is calculated using standard geometric formulas, for example: 1.73 × 1.73 = 3.46 m2, round the resulting number up, we get an area of 3.5 m2. Next, you need to find out the area of one floor tile: 0.335 × 0.335 = 0.112 m2. Next, we calculate how many whole tiles will be needed to cover the entire area: 3.5 / 0.112 = 31.2 pcs. We round the quantity to 32 and add 10% for marriage and trimming, in the case of a diagonal layout - 15%. The total is 35 or 37 tiles, respectively.

This method is used if the layout of the tiles in the bathroom is standard, and the individual elements do not differ in size. With non-standard laying methods, the number of tiles can be calculated only by drawing the project to scale. Or through special services, if the program for laying out tiles suggests the possibility of such placement of finishing elements. You can more accurately about the calculation of tiles.

for walls

wall tiles

As a rule, wall decoration is done in two shades, which are separated by a border, so first, you need to determine the height of each layer. At the same time, in the lower dark layer, it is better not to trim, that is, its height will be a multiple of the height of the tile. Depending on the size of the tile, lay out 3-4 rows. The height of the border will be different from the height of the tile used for this. The rest of the wall height is a light layer.

The dark band is calculated. The perimeter of the bathroom is multiplied by the height of the dark layer and its area is found out. The resulting number is divided by the area of one dark tile and its quantity is determined. Add 10% for pruning, fight and marriage.

In a similar way, light tiles are calculated. The wall area for a light finish is divided by the already known area of one tile and the amount of light-colored ceramics is obtained. Add 10%.

Count the curb elements. To do this, the perimeter of the room is divided by the length of the curb element. From the resulting number, subtract the part that comes to the doorway. Results are always rounded up to a multiple of a whole unit or half, since halves are also used, for example, at the corners.

For floor

Depending on the layout method and the configuration of the room, the most convenient method is chosen.

Bathroom floor tiles

By total area. Recognize total area the floor of the room, without subtracting the box and niche, and divide it by the area of one tile. Thus, they will find out how many tiles will be required in order to lay a given surface. 10% is added to the resulting number, which will be spent on trimming and insurance against marriage or damage to the material. The figure is rounded to greater value. The error in this method of calculation can be quite significant.
On both sides. First, find out how many tiles will be laid along each of the walls.

To do this, the length of the wall is divided by the length of the side of one tile that corresponds to it. The same count is carried out with the other wall and side of the tile. Thus, it is determined how many tiles are laid in one row along one and the other wall. The resulting figures are multiplied among themselves, add a margin - 10% and get the total amount.

If the layout of the floor tiles in the bathroom is made diagonally, the calculation is performed in the same way, but it is recommended to add not the standard 10%, but 15% to the stock.

Online calculator

You can also use our online calculator ohm to calculate the tiles, in this calculator it is possible to calculate not only the quantity but the cost of the tiles.

Computer programs.

Modern computer programs make counting tiles simple and convenient, provided they are used correctly.

Programs for calculating tiles in the bathroom

Services that help in calculations can be conditionally divided into two types: an online tile layout program and calculators for counting tiles. You can work in programs online or after installing them on your computer. Some of them are paid, but their functions and capabilities are significantly higher than the free versions. The tile calculation program allows the user to perform a number of actions:

 • Lay out the tiles in a 3d model and thereby create a semblance of a bathroom finish in the future;
 • Calculate Quantity finishing material and consumption of adhesive for tiles;
 • In the programs, you can adjust trimming and choose tiles from different collections.

Simplified versions for calculating tiles - calculators. These are small programs, usually online versions, that calculate the material based on the data entered by the user for an already finished project. It should be borne in mind that it is possible to calculate bathroom tiles on a calculator only if all the finishing elements are the same size.

Calculate the amount of consumables

The tile is usually put on the glue in a seam way, which means that the repair will require the adhesive mixture itself, the grout, and the installation crosses, which will regulate the thickness of the seam, as a rule, they purchase only one package with a minimum quantity of 50 pieces. The consumption of a certain tile adhesive and the amount of grout are pre-calculated.

The consumption of tile adhesive is influenced by a number of factors, among which the most significant is the evenness of the base. Also, the thickness of the adhesive base increases depending on the size of the tile, the smaller it is, the smaller the adhesive layer will hold it. For tiles, cement mixtures, dispersion adhesives or epoxy-based mixtures are used. They are applied with a notched trowel. At the same time, if its teeth are pointed, less glue is required than when working with a spatula with square teeth.
In order to find out the approximate consumption of tile adhesive, multiply half the height of the tile by the average consumption of the selected adhesive mixture and by the area of the surface to be covered.
The best way to calculate is to use online calculators. They give the most accurate results based on tile, substrate, tool, working conditions and selected adhesive.

Average consumption of material on the example of Ceresit glue

Grout for joints

In order to calculate the required amount, you need to know the volume of the space to be filled, but if the thickness of the seam is known, then it becomes difficult to determine its depth. As a rule, it depends not only on the thickness of the tile, it is important to take into account the thickness of the adhesive mixture and what percentage of the grout will go under the tile. All these indicators are relative, so it will not be possible to accurately calculate the material. The amount of grout is taken based on its consumption indicated on the package and 10-15% is added.
You can also use our online grout calculator, which accurately calculates the material according to the specified parameters. The program algorithms calculate the ideal value, so it is recommended to add 10% to the result. (votes: 7 , average rating: 4,43 out of 5)
