Crafts from car springs with your own hands. How to make a spring: step by step instructions and recommendations. Bench made of springs and parts of a pickup truck

Almost every home craftsman knows that it is possible to make a spring from almost any wire and successfully use it in everyday life. Mainly problems with self-manufacturing details do not appear. However, sometimes there are situations in which it is necessary to make either a spring of non-standard dimensions, or to give it increased strength and elasticity. To do this, you should resort to heat treatment operations. It is quite possible to harden a spring at home. It goes without saying that homemade part should not be used in especially critical devices operating under increased load. For such purposes, it is recommended to use factory-made springs. But for home use in a device operating in light mode, the technology in question is quite suitable.

Necessary tools and materials

In order to make and harden a wire spring with your own hands, you need:

  • Steel wire. The diameter is selected based on the required characteristics of the future product.
  • Ordinary gas burner.
  • Locksmith tools: pliers, hammer, etc.
  • Vice.
  • Stove. It can be, if available, a special or ordinary household one.

Additional devices that are selected individually in accordance with the size and stiffness of the spring are capable of facilitating the process of winding the spiral.

If the use and hardening is assumed from a wire with a diameter of less than 2 millimeters, then it may not be preheated. It will bend without problems without this operation. However, before starting the winding, it is recommended to unbend it along its entire length and completely align it.

When using wire with a diameter of more than 2 millimeters, it should be burned before starting work. Without this operation, it will be problematic to align and wind it.

Features of the operation

  • The right foundation is the key to success. In the factory, an alloy of non-ferrous metals (65G, 60HFA, 60S2A, 70SZA, Br. B2), alloyed or carbon steel is used for manufacturing. During homemade the optimal basis will be an old spring of the required diameter.
  • For annealing, a special furnace is best suited. In the absence of such, it is suitable from brick or metal.
  • For cooling after heating, it is recommended to use transformer oil. In its absence, a spindle will do.

Sequencing

1. Before tempering the spring wire, check the base material and make sure that the wire used is carbon steel.

2. The annealing procedure, as mentioned earlier, can add plasticity. This will facilitate the process of alignment and winding on the mandrel. To do this, you can use a special oven or any suitable one. In everyday life, it is possible to temper in the most suitable design (metal or brick). To do this, an ordinary fire is kindled, and then the future spring is placed in the coal. After heating the workpiece red-hot, the wire must be removed and allowed to cool naturally. The cooled wire will be much softer and it will be possible to work with it comfortably.

3. The softened wire should be completely aligned and wound onto a mandrel of a suitable diameter. During the procedure, it is necessary to control the dense arrangement of the turns to each other. To simplify, you can use a screwdriver.

4. To give the required elasticity, hardening will be required. Thanks to this heat treatment, the part is harder and more durable. Hardening springs involves heating them to a temperature of 830 to 870 degrees. For this, it is allowed to use a gas burner. We have already spoken before.

At home, you can hardly find a suitable thermometer that can accurately determine the temperature of a part. Therefore, you can navigate by the color of the metal. When the required temperature is reached, the workpiece will turn light red. We recommend watching a video with a detailed story about the heating temperature. After that, the spring is placed in a cooling medium (oil).

5. After the hardened spring, you need to hold it in a compressed state. This requires 20 to 40 hours.

6. Finally, process and fit to the required dimensions.

The correct implementation of such hardening will allow the spring to be successfully used in home mechanisms.

Most often, the question of how to make a spring yourself, using available tools for this, does not arise. However, there are situations when the springs of the required diameter are not at hand. It is in such cases that there is a need to make this element with your own hands.

Of course, springs for critical mechanisms operating in intensive mode are best made in production conditions, where it is possible not only to choose the right one, but also to comply with all the parameters of the technological process. If you need a non-standard spring for use in a mechanism that will be operated in a gentle mode, then you can make it at home.

What will be required

To make a spring with your own hands, prepare the following consumables and equipment:

  • steel wire, the diameter of which must correspond to the size of the cross-section of the turns of your future spring product;
  • conventional gas burner;
  • a tool that every locksmith shop must have;
  • metalwork vice;
  • an oven, which can also be used as a heating device for domestic purposes.

The wire, if its diameter does not exceed 2 mm, can not be subjected to preliminary heat treatment, since it is easy to bend without it. Before winding such a wire on a mandrel of the required diameter, it must be straightened and carefully aligned along the entire length of the winding.

When choosing the diameter of the mandrel, you should consider the size of the spring that you are going to make at home. To compensate for the elastic deformation of the wire, the diameter of the mandrel is chosen somewhat smaller than the required size of the internal cross section of the future product.

In the event that the diameter of the wire from which you are going to make a spring with your own hands is more than 2 mm, it must first be annealed, since without such a procedure it will be difficult to align it and wind it onto the mandrel.

Step-by-step instruction

Step 1

The first thing to do if you are going to make a spring with your own hands is to choose the material for such a product. The optimal material in this case is another spring (the main thing is that the diameter of the wire from which it is made corresponds to the cross section of the coils of the spring that you need to make).

Step 2

Annealing the wire for the spring, as mentioned above, will allow you to make it more ductile, and you can easily align it and wind it around the mandrel. To perform this procedure, it is best to use a special oven, but if one is not at your disposal, then you can use any other device that melts wood.

In such a stove, it is necessary to kindle birch firewood and, when they burn out to coals, put a spring in them, the wire from which you are going to use. After the spring is red-hot, the coals must be moved to the side and the heated product should be allowed to cool along with the stove. After cooling, the wire will become much more plastic, and you can easily work with it at home.

Step 3

The wire that has become soft should be carefully aligned and wound onto a mandrel of the required diameter. When performing this procedure, it is important to ensure that the turns are located close to each other. If you have never wound springs before, you can preview the tutorial video, which is easy to find on the Internet.

Step 4

In order for your new spring to have the required elasticity, it must be hardened. Heat treatment such as hardening will make the material harder and stronger. To perform hardening, the finished spring must be heated to a temperature of 830–870 °, for which a gas burner can be used. You can be guided by the fact that the required hardening temperature has been reached by the color of the red-hot spring: it should turn light red. To accurately determine this color, also focus on the video. After heating to the required temperature, the spring must be cooled in transformer or spindle oil.

Craftsmen assure that spare parts from an old car are very good consumable for arrangement original interior houses or apartments. They can also be used quite effectively in household. Our material will be equally interesting both to those who treat these ideas with a fair amount of skepticism and to those who like to be original.

Wheel disks

Perhaps, according to the degree of “integration” into the household, it is they who can rightfully consider themselves leaders.

For example, with minimal refinement, they make excellent country barbecues. A variety of "design solutions" on this topic constantly flash in any social network, and their ingenuity can only be envied. In the process of searching, you can come across smoking towers consisting of even 5-6 disks. But those who do not want to bother themselves with multi-stage engineering work, argue that the simplest version of such a brazier will quite cope with the task of cooking meat and vegetable dishes on coals. To do this, experts say, it is enough just to equip the disk turned upside down with three legs (ordinary metal tubes of the appropriate diameter will perfectly play this role), and make sure that the coals do not wake up down through the holes (you can use either a solid piece of iron, or get by with a folded several times metal mesh with narrow cells). The result - for at least one summer season, the land plot is provided with a reliable (and most importantly - inexpensive) device for cooking meat on coals.

Another fairly common way to use the wheel in the household told "SP" a resident of one of the dacha settlements near Moscow Evgeny Volodin. “I don’t remember where I saw this option,” says the man, “but I really liked it. By simply nailing a couple of disks to the wall of the barn, I had at my disposal very convenient holders for watering hoses. True, not so long ago, Eugene brought the original idea to a bit, as they say, brought to mind. One small inconvenience prompted him to “revise” it: winding the hoses around the wheel after watering by hand cannot be called clean work. Therefore, a savvy summer resident planted another wheel on a pin with a bearing, supplying the structure with a spring and a gear wheel with an anchor. Now, at the end of watering, the hose is wound around the disc on its own.

“Wheels can be used as a base for backlit coffee tables,” says the freelance designer. Nadezhda Agafonova. - Especially good in combination with a glass top in this capacity are cast or forged products with a negative overhang. Because the light of the LEDs or lamps hidden inside the base is scattered very beautifully due to the original wheel pattern. However, in this case, the weight of the structure turns out to be quite decent, Agafonova specifies.

Car interior elements

Recommendations for the use of car seats in the process of arranging the interior of a house or apartment are an imperishable "hit" of many glamor magazines dedicated to design art. What only options you will not meet on their pages. There are also folding rocking chairs, into which it is easy to turn the front seats of any car (you just need to put them on skids and provide them with armrests), and kitchen sofas with chain swings (mainly rear seats are used for these purposes). Fantasy developers, as they say, there are no boundaries. True, it is worth noting that all this diversity is purely decorative. From the point of view of functionality, it is very difficult to find a different use for the seats from an old car.

Seat belt buckles make good housekeepers. Provided, of course, that a bunch of keys will be equipped with a keychain in the form of a buckle from this very belt. “Of course, such a kind of key holder may seem somewhat cumbersome to someone, as it was to me at first,” says a resident of Krasnoyarsk Polina Ozerova. - Therefore, I grumbled for a long time at my husband, who hung these clamps with buttons exactly according to the number of members of our family on the wall of the hallway of our house. But I soon realized that in terms of storage reliability, such a system definitely surpasses any of the most beautiful hooks, not to mention simple carnations, from where the keys can be simply accidentally brushed off.

Experienced car enthusiast Igor Gladyshev from Moscow in his house crashed into everything interior doors not the usual furniture, but car locks. Moreover, as they say, “supported the domestic manufacturer”, giving preference to the model that was used, in particular, in the line of VAZ-2107 cars. “From the time of training at a driving school, I remembered the instructor’s words that the so-called “drowned” handles in a car are much safer than speakers. And when my child, who is always rushing around the rooms at breakneck speed, kissed his forehead a couple of times on the protruding handles of the usual locks, and my wife slightly bled her thigh, I decided to take this step.

Yes, Igor explains, the mortise "American tongues" had to be removed and replaced with ordinary round latches. But now none of the household members get scratches and bruises after an accidental meeting with door locks.

Suspension and body

“In England and other European countries,” says the Moscow Architectural Institute graduate Ilona Sergeeva, - quite often on the sites of wealthy citizens you can see old cars turned into small pools at the whim of the owners. And in the houses themselves - the rear parts of the bodies, acting as secretaries.

In Russia, perhaps, such landscape and interior solutions would look very extravagant, but domestic craftsmen make some interesting discoveries in this area. Inhabitant Krasnodar Territory Maxim Ya., selling for spare parts his old UAZ-469, which had suffered in an accident, for a very long time could not attach the hood cover in reliable hands. And when he had already come to terms with the fact that this spare part, apparently, would simply have to be scrapped, it occurred to him original idea. “I was just finishing building a shed on the site,” he says, “and the building materials were short. I began to figure out what to concoct a visor over the door, and then the same hood caught my eye. I ended up adapting him in such a capacity. ” It turned out, says Maxim, cheap and cheerful. And when he later attached a pair of headlights to the hood (having previously stuck ordinary fluorescent lamps there), he also solved the problem of lighting the yard at night.

In a similar extravagance way, by the way, they propose to solve the issue with lighting (only rooms) and some Russian design bureaus, which have long adopted world experience in manufacturing table lamps and wall lamps from automobile shock absorbers, as well as pipes of the exhaust system.

Hi all brains! It's good if the springs you need for your projects can be bought at the store, but even then, how many should you have in stock, and what size and type? In addition, store-bought springs are sometimes suitable, and sometimes it is very difficult to find the right one, so it would be nice to learn how to make them. do it yourself and this article will help with that!

Making springs, although it seems something frightening, but having the basic tools at hand and simple knowledge of any do-it-yourselfer can make them. In this guide I will tell you how to make some springs, first the easy way, and then with the help of a more diverse tool, but also not difficult.

Step 1: Spring Types

The photo shows several types of springs, which I will show you how to make.
On the left is the extension spring, then the compression spring, the conical spring, and the torsion spring.

Step 2: Basic Method

In the first and most easy way creation brainsprings tools and materials shown in the photo are used. Using them, you can safely make a wide variety of springs, and these are:
- wooden stick with a diameter of 1.2cm
- piano string
- pliers with an "option" to cut off the wire
- hacksaw
- clamp
- screwdriver

Step 3: Preparing the Wooden Stick

From a wooden stick we cut off a part about 13 cm long, and on one of the ends we make a slot into which the string will be inserted. A stick with a diameter of 1.2 cm is good for this, as it fits perfectly into the screwdriver's chuck. Lesser's wand brain diameter will not fit - it will not be able to hold the piano string.

Step 4: Making the Tension Spring

For our purposes, a screwdriver is better than a drill, because you can control the speed of rotation. Always use pliers for safety, as the string can spring back and injure you!

First, we fasten the screwdriver to the workbench with a clamp, then with one hand we control the power button of the screwdriver, and with the other we hold brain pliers, wind the coils of the spring, as much as you need. While feeding the string, we tighten it tightly, so the spring will turn out to be of better quality.

Step 5: Curl the Ends

Having wound the spring, with the help of pliers we bend its ends and get the finished extension spring. By experimenting in this way, springs of various sizes can be obtained.

Step 6: Compression Spring

To create this type of spring, you will need a longer stick, but also with a slot at the end. When winding it between the turns, it is necessary to keep a certain distance, which is controlled “by eye”, you may have to practice a little to get a high-quality spring, but brain activity it's pretty interesting.

Having made such a spring, I tried it out - I put it on a wooden rod, and placed a small block on top. When I pressed it and released it, the block “bullet” flew up to the ceiling.

Step 7: Conical Spring

A conical stick can be made with a screwdriver and a grinder.

Applying all the same brain technology, the string is threaded into the slot of the cone-shaped stick, and then the winding takes place. After the spring is wound, its ends are cut off, and that's it, the conical spring is ready.

To get a quality spring cone, I wound two of these, and the second turned out better.

Step 8: Torsion Spring

To create this spring, I was forced to use a slotted brass rod, as the wooden one did not hold up.

To make a torsion spring, it is enough to wind several coils at the distance you need between them. After that, slightly bending the ends, you will get a finished torsion spring.

Step 9: Finally

The photo shows a compression spring that I made using a brass rod, and a few others, in different sizes.

I think that this brain technology making springs is not difficult, and I hope you will find it useful in your homemade. In addition, it will help save money if you need a lot of springs.

Thank you for your attention and good luck brain-building!

According to experts, it is possible to produce a spring with high performance characteristics and in compliance with all the necessary parameters only on special factory equipment. However, myself technological process is nothing complicated.

The question of how to make a spring at home is quite relevant. This is due to the fact that there are situations when a home master may not have a spring of the required diameter at hand. In this case, you have to make it yourself. How to make a spring with your own hands? What tools will be needed for this? For information on how to make a spring at home, you will find in this article.

What will be needed for work?

Before you make a spring, you need to acquire the following consumables and equipment:

  • Steel wire.
  • Locksmith vise.
  • conventional gas burner.
  • The mandrel on which the wire will be wound.
  • Thermal or household oven.

About wire

It is desirable that it be hardened high carbon steel. You can use special carbon and alloyed or non-ferrous alloys: 60HFA, 70S3A, 65G, 60S2A, etc. Judging by the reviews, many home craftsmen remake old unnecessary springs. This method is considered the most optimal, since such a product usually uses wire with excellent technical specifications.

About Diameter

How to make a spring? What wire diameter to choose? Experts recommend using consumables with a diameter of no more than 0.2 cm. Due to the fact that such a wire is easily bent, it does not require pre-heat treatment. Before winding on the mandrel, it is unbent and carefully aligned. When choosing a diameter for the mandrel, one should proceed from the dimensions of the future spring. In other words, one must take into account the internal transverse section products. Many craftsmen compensate for the elastic deformations of the wire by choosing mandrels of obviously smaller diameter. When working with wire thicker than 0.2 cm, it is often difficult to wind it around the mandrel. In this case, you will have to perform its preliminary annealing.

Where to start?

Experts recommend using wire from some old spring, the diameter of which does not suit the owner. The master will only have to align it and wind it on a mandrel with a section of the desired size. To do this, the wire must be absolutely flat. It will be much more plastic if it is processed in a special furnace. In the absence of one, any other device that can be melted with firewood will do. According to experienced craftsmen, birch gives enough heat for firing. After kindling the stove, you need to wait for the firewood to burn out in it. Only coals should remain. They should put the old spring in them. If the product is hot enough, it will turn red. Now the spring can be pushed aside so that it cools in the air. After this procedure, the metal will become ductile and will be easy to work with.

How to make a spring?

After waiting for the old product to cool enough, they begin to unwind it. An absolutely even wire should be wound on the mandrel. For those who do not know how to make a spring, experts recommend placing the coils close. On the this stage the master will have to make a physical effort. The mandrel is clamped in a bench vise.

It will be much easier to work if you use pliers. Judging by the reviews of experienced craftsmen, very often beginners have difficulties in choosing the size of the mandrel. It is possible that you will have to work not with one mandrel, but with several with different sections. Diameter for homemade spring in this case is selected empirically.

Product hardening

For those who are interested in how to make a spring themselves, experienced craftsmen are also advised to pay attention to hardening it. This procedure consists in heat treatment of the product in order to give it the required elasticity.

A hardened spring becomes much harder and stronger than its original state. Heat treatment is carried out in special furnaces at a temperature of 830 to 870 degrees. You can also cope with this work at home using the usual gas burner. Since there are usually no temperature sensors in such devices, the home craftsman will have to visually control the process. As a guide, you can use the color of the heated product. The metal, when heated to 800 degrees, becomes cherry red. This means that it is too early to take the product out of the oven. If the spring is hot enough (870 degrees), it will turn light red. Now it should be cooled down. For this purpose, transformer or spindle oil is suitable. In special factory thermal furnaces, metals are heated up to 1050 degrees. Products with this temperature regime take on orange hues.

Final stage

After the hardening procedure, the spring should be compressed and left in this position for two days. Then, using a grinding machine, its ends are processed. This will give the handicraft the desired size. After completing all the above steps, the spring is considered ready for operation. According to experts, handicraft homemade products cannot be compared with similar factory-made products.

Nevertheless, non-standard springs are widely used in various mechanisms. If they are operated in a gentle mode, then the springs will last long enough.
