My fence also needs updating and repair. Initially hired workers from Central Asia, the poles were installed without taking into account our local climatic conditions. I wanted this post to maybe help someone save some time if they ever need to replace a fence that has wooden poles that are set into concrete and don't want to have to dig them out by hand.

Here is the story.

My most aging neighbor asked me if I would like to replace about a ten leg section from her old cedar fence and update it to the same style her neighbor had just installed. Of course I said yes.

Now, the truth is, I'm lazy, and work for it. I wanted to find a way to raise old posts that are dug into the ground into concrete without resorting to digging them out of the ground with a shovel, and thereby breaking too much sweat in the process. I wanted to be able to reuse the holes for new posts too so pulling them up was out of the question as it could lengthen the holes.

After scouring the web and finding ways to pull posts that would leave a huge hole to go back and re-dig, or hoki "hold my beer" type ideas with tools I didn't have like a tractor or a truck wheel rim, or a chain, or explosives, I decided that nothing was "out there" in bitland just enough to satisfy my needs. So, I came up with the following idea. I like it because you can pull the post from one side so you don't need anyone to hold you beer for you and then after you've finished pulling the posts you can dismantle the unit and use the parts as new posts when rebuilding new fence, and using the same holes. Don't dig! No nails. No screws. Can I get an amen?

Step 1: Gather Some Simple Materials


For my/your post pullers, you'll need

  • Treated 2 4″ x 4″ x 10′ lumber posts
  • 2 4″ x 4″ x 1′ lumber processed pieces
  • A twenty-foot or so reserve parachute cord, twine, rope, wire, whatever
  • 1 two leg iron spike or rebar (found in home improvement centers. I used a 3/4″ diameter spike)
  • Drill
  • a 3/4″ bit (or whatever matches the diameter of your spike)
  • Concrete cinder block or crowbar, or whatever you can find for support.

Step 2: Create Your One Handed Post Puller


What you want to do is throw two long 4x4s together, sandwiching the two small pieces together as shown. tie as tight as possible a big problem. During use, no ropes (paracord) are applied. The cord is just there to hold the smaller pieces of timber between the long ones so that they act like wedges for laying.

Then you want to drill a hole large enough for your spike (in my case, 3/4″) through the end of one of the long 4x4's. Then do the same on the other side. Measure if you need to, I'm not like I'm quite experienced by eye/hand. You want the holes to line up so you can press the tenon as shown with little or no resistance.

You are done with the puller! Hard work, right? Or what? (In case you are a Northern sibling).

Step 3: Install The Puller On The Old Post



Now you need to drill a hole into the existing post that you want to pull. How high depends on your support material. In my case it was about 15 inches off the ground.

Insert the minus spike puller up to the old post, aligning the holes, and push the spike through three 4x4's as shown.

Now you will need to be your fulcrum.

Step 4: Add Your Supports


Place your fulcrum, in my case an old cinder block and a step, as close to the post as possible without covering any of the concrete that the post is on. Just take the supports up to the edge of the concrete as shown in the picture.

Step 5: Pull out the EP Post!



Walk to the far end of your post puller, and with one hand hold your drink of choice, use your other hand to push down on the handle lever. See how easy it is?

Step 6: Hard To Get To The Medical


Hard to reach posts are not suitable for your new puller post, either. You can push the tenon through the hole, and with a puller from the side, as shown in the picture. Worked great! Picked it up straight and without damaging the other fence that I had to duel when I repaired her fence.

Sooner or later, each owner on the site has such a situation when you need to remove a pole from the ground. But what is the best way to do this if the pillar has a concrete base in addition. In fact, all you need is "golden hands" and car jack. Here is a method that will solve the problem in less than an hour.



Instruments


To extract the pole from the ground along with concrete base you will need some tools: a car jack and blocks of wood. Large, long bolts and a saw will come in handy. By and large, find everything the right tools won't be difficult. No special gadgets are required for extraction.

Extraction technique


In order to remove the pole from the ground along with the base, first you need to cut it down so that its height does not exceed 1 meter. Now, to the remaining clean, you need to attach a bar into which our jack will rest. It must be securely fixed. Best of all, two hefty bolts.


Now you need to prepare a support for the jack. It must necessarily rest on free ground and be at some distance from the concrete base. To create it, you can use several bars. It should be taken with a margin, as it will gradually need to increase the height of the base.



The rest of the column extraction technology is extremely simple. We put the jack on the base and bring it under the stop, we begin to raise it. After some time, when the upward movement of the column becomes too difficult, we remove the jack and increase the height of our stand. We put the jack - we twist. This procedure should be repeated until the end.

Last summer, at the dacha, my son and I needed to pull out of the ground a pole hammered into it by 1.5 m in the form steel pipe 120 mm in diameter. There were no tools at hand, and I did not want to dig out a pipe in a drizzling rain. And then I came up with the idea of ​​how to do it.

A long crowbar was applied vertically to the pipe, the lower end of which was at a small distance from the ground, the pipe and crowbar were tightly wrapped two or three times with a rope automobile rope moistened with water, and placed to pipe emphasis in the form of a small stump of a log (Fig. 1).

Then the son turned scrap for its upper end perpendicular to the column. The rope ring strongly compressed the post and the crowbar, which, having reached the stop, became a lever (Fig. 2). With the help of his son, he pulled the pole a short distance out of the ground. After that, the crowbar was returned to its original position and lowered down the pole together with the rope ring to a distance equal to the height to which the pole was pulled out, and the operation was repeated.

Thus, for several times, the pillar was removed from the ground without the use of any special mechanisms or digging it out.

If the post sits very strongly in the ground, it is better to use two crowbars (or other levers) that need to be attached to the post from different sides and wrapped with one common rope. In this case, two stops are used, and the crowbars (levers) are turned in opposite directions by two workers (Fig. 3).
