How to determine where the qibla is. In search of the true path, or how to correctly determine the direction of the qibla. Scientific work of Abdel-Aziz Sallam

Instructions for determining the position of Mecca, for the implementation of Namaz.

Islam is the youngest religion that exists at the moment. However, despite this, she has a huge number of fans and people who pray to Allah daily. In this article, we will tell you in which direction you need to pray.

In which direction do prayers on the compass?

This is daily prayer, which is held five times a day. It is worth noting that a lot of rules and even entire instructions for conducting prayer are associated with this action. Muslims are an unusual people who adhere to a huge number of rules in the implementation of prayer. It is necessary to perform prayer not in any direction, but in a certain direction. More precisely, it is held to the side Qibla.

In which direction do prayer by compass:

  • Qibla Literally translated as located opposite. Previously, it was located in the direction of the city of Jerusalem, but then it was moved to the city of Mecca, where the Kaaba is now located. The most interesting thing is that there are many difficulties in determining the direction Qibla , in the event that a person is in the desert, travels, or is constantly in transport.
  • Many believe that the development of mathematics, physics, geometry, as well as the exact sciences, is provoked precisely by the need to accurately determine Qibla . Now there are many ways to determine this direction, even special rugs with compasses and with a mark are sold, that is, an indicator in which direction it is necessary to pray.
  • Despite this, with the definition Qibla there are many difficulties, especially if a person is on the road. However, there are several ways to determine this direction from the stars, the Sun, as well as a compass, an electronic watch.

How to determine in which direction to pray?

Now everything is much simpler, since there are electronic maps that allow you to determine the exact direction. However, unfortunately, not everywhere on the road there is an opportunity to turn on GPS navigation, which is why in such cases orientation is carried out in ancient ways, using the direction of the sun and stars.

How to determine in which direction to pray:

  • Before the advent of new technologies, the Qibla direction was determined using special tables. They were founded and developed on the basis of mathematical formulas and complex calculations.
  • A little earlier, mathematicians puzzled and provided a huge number of special formulas to determine the direction of Qibla. However, in most cases, such measurements were not suitable for the general population, since not everyone had enough knowledge, erudition and IQ levels to determine the calculation for these formulas.
  • Accordingly, that is why all the values were entered in special tables, which were used for a long time. Now everything works much easier, for this it is enough to have an electronic watch or a phone with an online application.
  • Thanks to him, the exact coordinates of your location are found, and as a result, a person receives a vector, the direction in which it is necessary to perform prayer. However, if this is not possible, then the sun is often used. To do this, you need to stand with your back to the Sun and see that the shadow will be directed towards the East, the back is North, and the face is directed to the South. It was in this way that they determined where the Qibla was.

How to know in which direction to pray?

There is an opinion that Muslims always pray towards the East., However, this is relevant only for eastern countries. If you are, for example, in the USA, then prayers can be carried out towards the northeast. In every corner the globe direction may change.

How to know which way to pray:

  • Now, thanks to modern technology, determining the location of Mecca is quite simple. However, things were much more complicated before. In general, the simplest option is orientation towards the Sun.
  • As mentioned above, it is necessary at 12:00 to stand with your back to the Sun and determine the location. This will help if you know in which direction the Kaaba is located from a given place. Then it will be enough just to determine the point in the direction of which you need to look and determine the coordinates where you are now.
  • Now it is enough to have GPS navigation and the simplest compass to determine the direction. There are many online sites that allow you to determine the direction of Mecca. In general, the direction is of great importance, however, there are several opinions and confirmation that if you pray in the wrong direction, then nothing terrible will happen.

In which direction should prayer be done?

There are several confirmations that in the past, to determine the direction, it was necessary to perform many complex manipulations that did not give an accurate direction and had a very large measurement error. That's whysome travelers prayed in the wrong direction.

In which direction should you pray:

  • There is even a story that says that two travelers could not determine the direction of Mecca, so they prayed in completely different directions, opposite in direction.
  • The action was carried out at night, in the morning the travelers determined by the level of the sun where the south and west were and realized that they were performing prayer in the wrong direction, where Mecca is located.
  • However, the prophet came to them and said that there was no need to repeat the prayer, since Allah is everywhere: in the north, and in the West, and in the East. There are a number of confirmations of this, therefore, if you accidentally determined the direction of the Qibla incorrectly, then there is no need to repeat the prayer. This applies to travelers, as well as people who have difficulty in determining the direction of the Kaaba.

It is worth considering that when building temples in Islam, the direction relative to the Kaaba is also used. In general, all the temples are directed towards Mecca, so this fact should be taken into account. When performing prayer, you can focus on the position of the mosque. In any country in the world, it is built according to these rules. Therefore, being in the mosque, it is necessary to stand in the indicated directions. In some temples on the floor, on the walls there are markings in which direction it is necessary to perform prayer.

What are we going to determine? Let's go to Wikipedia for help:

Qibla (Arab. قبلة‎‎ - “direction”, “what is opposite”) - in Islam, the direction to the Kaaba, located in the Forbidden Mosque (Masjid al-Haram,المسجد الحرام ) in the city of Mecca (Saudi Arabia), observed during the prayer-prayer and the performance of a number of other rituals.

Qibla (orientation) is important in the construction of mosques and other places of worship in many religions, as well as in the daily life of Muslims, and serves as a symbol of the unity of all Muslims.

In the early years of the spread of Islam (from 610 to 623), the Qibla was located in Quds (Jerusalem). The change in Qibla from al-Aqsa Mosque (Quds) to the Forbidden Mosque (Mecca) occurred seventeen months after the Hijra, and was made in response to the statements of Medinan Jews that, they say, the prophet and Muslims did not know where Qibla was and supposedly they taught them.

Prophet Muhammad(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) prayed to Allah Almighty to show the Muslims their Qibla for Islam. And in the month of Shaban of the 2nd year of the Hijri, the Lord showed him the direction of the new Qibla in accordance with the following Qur'anic revelation:

We see you [Muhammad] look at the sky many times [requesting that the direction of prayer (Qibla) be changed]. You can rest assured, We will guide you in the direction that you will be pleased with. Direct your face towards the Holy Mosque (toward the Kaaba). And wherever you are [on the planet], direct your faces [when praying] in this direction.

Those to whom the Scripture was given earlier [Jews and Christians] know that this is the Truth from the Lord. The Almighty will not disregard the slightest of their actions [His vigilance regarding the deeds and deeds of everyone and everything is unshakable, everything is in His control]. *

Holy Quran, 2:144

Here are some hadiths describing this moment:

We prayed with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, (for) sixteen or seventeen months, turning towards Jerusalem, after which we turned towards the Kaaba.

hadith from Al-Bara'a,

St. Muslim Hadith

hadith from Ibn Umar,

The recognition of the Qibla in the direction of the Kaaba was important for Muslims, who declared themselves not as a reform movement, but as an independent religion with Arabian specifics. In this regard, one of the names that the Muslim community received is “ qibla people and accords [communities]"(arab. أهل القبلة والجماعة ‎‎ ‒ « ahlu-l-qibla wa-l-jama'a»).

In everyday life, it is very important for Muslims to know the Qibla direction also when performing some other actions that are not related to prayer-prayer:

Burial of the dead

The deceased Muslim is placed in the grave on the right side facing the Qibla.

The Kaaba is your direction, whether you are alive or dead.

St. hadiths of al-Bayhaqi, at-Tahawi

Animal slaughter

Animals are slaughtered by laying them on their left side and turning their heads towards Mecca.

The Prophet slaughtered two rams on the day of Eid. When they were turned, the prophet said: "I sincerely turned my face to the One who created the heavens and the earth, and I do not belong to the polytheists!" In another narration it is said: “He turned the rams towards the Qibla, when slaughtered.”

hadeeth from Jabir ibn Abdallah,

St. hadith al-Bukhari

Sleep and lying

It is recommended to fall asleep with your face turned towards Mecca, on your right side, thinking about what deeds you did during the day: good or bad. After all, a dream is a small death, and no one, falling asleep, knows for sure whether he will wake up or not.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) turned to me and said: “O such and such, when you want to go to bed, perform the same ablution as you do before prayer, lie on your right side and say:“ Allahumma inni aslamtu wajhi ilayka wa favvaztu amri ilaika va aljatu zahri ilaika, ragbatan va ragbatan ilaika la maljaa wa la maljaminka illa ilaika, amantu bikitabika llazi anzalta wa nabiyika llazi arsalta.” (O my Allah, I turn my face to You, I rely in all my affairs on Your will, I rely on You, I rely on You, I fear You, and I have nowhere to flee from You except to You, I believe in the Prophet sent by You and in the Qur'an sent down by You).

hadeeth from Bara ibn ‘Azeeb,

St. hadiths of al-Bukhari and Muslim

Management of natural needs

It is undesirable to send natural needs with your face and back to the Qibla.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If any of you begins to relieve a great need (in an open area), let him not face the qiblah and do not turn his back to it. Turn (face) to the east or to the west.

hadith from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari,

St. hadith al-Bukhari

Thus, the question of the correct definition of Qibla is extremely important for a Muslim!

Let's try to understand this issue.

Almighty Allah (the Lord of the worlds, the Creator of everything and everything, God) belongs to both the east and the west [if you are subjected to religious persecution somewhere, then remember that you can pray to the Almighty in any clean place throughout the earthly space]. Wherever you turn, there will be His face [He is not limited by place or time]. Indeed, Allah (God, Lord) is infinitely Broad [by His mercy] and All-Knowing. *

Holy Quran, 2:115

In his translation of the meanings of the Holy Quran, a well-known Muslim theologian in Russia explains this verse as follows:

Muslims around the world pray in the direction of the Kaaba, located in the city of Mecca, but this certainly does not mean that the Almighty is there. No, the Creator is transcendent, and our planet is a grain of sand among the galaxies created by Him. But all the Muslims of the world, despite the fact that they different cultures, nationalities, live in different cities and states, think and analyze differently, speak different languages - all of them are united by common spiritual values, a certain form of prayer-prayer in Arabic, fasting, hajj (pilgrimage), direction during prayer.

Anyone who can see the Kaaba should look at it while praying. And the one who cannot see her should turn in her direction, since this is all that is in his power, and Allah Almighty puts on the soul only what it can do. For example, for the inhabitants of Medina and those whose territory is located in this way, the following hadeeth applies:

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “That which (is) between East and West is (and is) Qibla.”

hadeeth from Abu Hurayrah,

St. hadiths of Ibn Maja, al-Hakim and at-Tirmidhi

Ways to determine Qibla

→ For those traveling by transport

For those traveling by transport, Qibla while driving is the direction of traffic.

I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) pray while riding, (and he prayed) in the direction he was driving.

hadith from Amir ibn Rabia,

St. Muslim Hadith

Al-Bukhari added in the text of this hadeeth: He tilted his head slightly". And at-Tirmidhi added the following to the text: “(However) he did not act in this way when performing the obligatory prayers».

→ When performing a prayer-prayer in forced conditions, illness or danger

Under such circumstances, it is permissible to pray without turning towards the Qibla, as the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

If I order you to do something, then do what you can (do).

St. hadiths of al-Bukhari, Muslim, at-Tirmidhi and an-Nasai

Also, Almighty Allah in the Holy Quran teaches us:

If you are afraid of something (fear for yourself), you can commit [another obligatory prayer-namaz] walking [if the situation is so extraordinary, dangerous, and the prayer time is already coming to an end, then you can perform it without even stopping, on the go] or on horseback [moving on any of the ground, underground or air modes of transport, praying with optimal in the existing conditions and the maximum amplitude of movements in the direction of traffic. Subsequently, there is no canonical need to reread the obligatory prayer performed in this way]. If there are no fears, then mention the Almighty in the way He taught you what you did not know [that is, perform the prayer-prayer in the usual manner, calmly, fully, peacefully].*

Holy Quran, 2:239

→ In all other cases, when a person does not experience obvious difficulties:

1) AT modern world high technology to determine the qibla you can use special programs installed on a cell phone, tablet or on your personal computer; (like this one: )

2) If you are in a settlement where there is a mosque, then the mihrab will tell you the direction of Qibla - a hemispherical niche in the wall of the mosque (often decorated with two columns and an arch), in which the imam performs a collective prayer. The arrangement of carpets and stripes in mosques also helps to correctly navigate inside the mosque;

3) If there were no technical means at hand, then you can calculate the direction towards Qibla using a geographical map, and, knowing this direction, use the compass to navigate at the point where you are now;

4) If the compass is suddenly not at hand, then, knowing the direction to Qibla for the area where you are now (for example, for Central Russia, Qibla is the direction to the south) you can:

in the daytime to determine the cardinal points:

in the shade at noon

The cardinal directions are easiest to determine in sunny weather at noon. You need to stand with your back to the sun and the shadow that you cast will point to the North in the Northern Hemisphere and to the South in the Southern Hemisphere. In the equatorial regions, the midday shadow is directed to the north for half a year (from September 23 to March 21), and for half a year to the south (from March 21 to September 23).

by sun and clock

In sunny weather, the cardinal points can be determined with a clock. To do this, you need to position the clock so that the hour hand points to the Sun. Divide the angle between the hour hand and 12 o'clock in half, and the line dividing this angle will point to the South, and the South until 12 o'clock will be from right side from the Sun, and after 12 o'clock from the left. This method is suitable for determining the direction during the day, namely from 6 am to 6 pm.

Attention! With the onset of spring, many countries, including Russian Federation, is introduced summer time and the clock is moved forward an hour, so noon comes at 13 o'clock in the afternoon, i.e. the angle is measured between the hour hand and the number 1.

As of 01.01.2015 the time was changed again - now noon is calculated in the same way as it was, focusing on 12 hours.
At the time of reading the article, please be guided by the current time, as the authors may not keep track of the next change!!!

at night time:

by polar star(if you are in the northern hemisphere)

I) Find the constellation Ursa Major (Big Dipper) in the sky.

II) Set aside the distance between the two extreme stars five times in a straight line towards the constellation Ursa Minor (small bucket). The delayed segment will coincide with the last star in the tail of Ursa Minor. This will be the North Star, from which mentally draw a vertical line to the Earth. This will be the direction to the north.

according to the constellation of the Southern Cross(if you are in the southern hemisphere)

The constellation Southern Cross consists of four bright stars, mutually located in the form of a cross. For a more precise definition of the South, a straight line is used through two stars located to the left of the Southern Cross. The intersection of this line and the line laid off from the Southern Cross will be the direction to the South.

5) And finally, if it is not possible to determine the direction of the Qibla, for example, due to darkness or cloudiness, then, at the beginning, you should ask someone who knows about it. If you have no one to ask, then you should try to determine the Qibla yourself and pray, turning in the direction that you assume is the Qibla.

In this case, your prayer, inshaAllah, will be valid, and you will not be obliged to repeat it, even if later it turns out that you performed the prayer in the wrong direction. If it turns out that you are performing prayer in the wrong direction during its performance, then you should turn in the right direction without interrupting the prayer.

These conclusions are based on the following hadith:

Once, when people were performing morning prayers in the mosque, a man came to them and said: “Verily, Allah sent down to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) the Koran, in which he ordered to turn towards the Kaaba, so turn to her.” They stood facing the Sham and turned towards the Kaaba.

hadith from Ibn Umar,

St. hadiths of al-Bukhari and Muslim

Once, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and I were on a campaign, the sky was covered with clouds, therefore, trying to determine the Qibla, we disagreed (regarding the Qibla), and each of us prayed in his own direction (on Kaaba). (However) each drew a line in front of him to indicate the direction (of perfect prayer). In the morning we looked at the sky and found that we did not pray in the direction of the Qibla. We told the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) about what happened, but he did not order us to repeat the prayer and said: “That prayer is sufficient for you.”

hadith from Jabir,

St. hadith ad-Darakutni, al-Hakim,

al-Baykhaki, at-Tirmidhi, Ibn Maji and at-Tabarani

Summing up, I would like to remind you to read the 115th verse of the 2nd sura "The Cow" of the Holy Quran, given above in the text, once again!

You should not wind yourself up unnecessarily if you are unable to accurately determine the Qibla, because the main thing is to do everything in your power for this and perform a prayer with a niyat (intention) of its execution in the direction of the Qibla and, insha Allah, your prayer will be fully accepted by Allah Almighty, Subhanahu wow ta'ala!!! The main thing is not to forget to do it!!!

Of course, you guessed in the process of reading that the article is not only literally about the Qibla ...

It is very difficult to find the true, direct path, which is mentioned in the Holy Quran and which all Muslims ask the Lord to guide in every rak'ah of prayer, reading Surah al-Fatiha, and it is even more difficult not to turn off it later !!!

I advise you to watch very interesting video clips for development: "" and "".

*With comments by Sh. Alyautdinov

If you would like to get to know Islam and know its foundation - The Holy Quran, we recommend reading its first theological translation into Russian, made by Sh. Alyautdinov ("THE HOLY QURAN MEANINGS. THE THEOLOGICAL TRANSLATION").

The publication presents a complete translation of the Holy Quran, however, the author does not claim that this exhausts all the meanings of the Holy Scriptures - the attention of readers is only offered what the author was able to extract, having spent many years of painstaking work with the fundamental works of Muslim theologians and analyzing modernity through many tens of thousands human questions to which he happened to answer.

Being ritually pure while reading this book is not required (for more on why it is not required, see 79th verse of the 56th sura).

When performing a prayer in Islam, you need to be located, strictly orienting yourself in relation to a certain direction. Let's figure out where Muslims pray and how to independently determine the side, regardless of your location.

Why Direction Matters

Righteous Muslims, when performing prayer and ritual actions, must strictly observe a certain set of rules. Among them, the key place is occupied by qibla or qibla. From Arabic, this word is translated as "direction".

The term qibla refers to the exact direction towards the sacred Kaaba. When performing religious rites, the faithful must strictly adhere to the qibla, i.e., face towards the sacred Kaaba.

Qibla serves as a guide for all Muslims when performing prayers. It is a symbol of the spiritual unity of all the lawful, regardless of their location and residence. Orientation, taking into account the location of the Kaaba, is essential in the construction of mosques.

Why towards the Kaaba? Al-Kaaba al-Musharrafa "The Venerable Kaaba" is the main Muslim shrine, which is a cube-shaped building located in the courtyard of the Forbidden Mosque in the city of Mecca.

Sura 2:142 of the Koran: “And wherever you are, turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque. This is the truth from your Lord, and Allah is Aware of what you do. And wherever you are, turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque, and wherever you are, turn your faces towards it, so that people, unless they are wicked, have no argument against you.

7 ways to determine qibla

In the past, determining the orientation for prayer was a key issue in the Muslim scientific world. Without the ability to determine the right direction, it is impossible to correctly conduct prayer ceremonies. For travelers and people in foreign areas, the problem of determining the qibla was difficult. Thus, it was difficult for a Muslim to orient himself in the desert. The desire to accurately determine the direction for prayer became a catalyst for the development of geography, mathematics, and astronomy.

When resolving a problem that makes it possible to quickly determine in which direction a Muslim should pray, it is worth determining the coordinates and locations of the Kaaba.

Kaaba coordinates:

  • latitude - 21 ° 2520 north latitude;
  • longitude - 39 ° 4934 east longitude.

There are seven main ways to quickly determine which direction to pray to a faithful Muslim, no matter where he is.

Mathematical

Previously, in the absence of appropriate tools, the sages tried to solve the problem of determining the direction by calculating the exact coordinates of the location and calculating the ratio of these coordinates with the location of Mecca. For this, on the basis of trigonometry and geometry, the latitude and longitude of various geographical points were calculated. On the basis of these data, special tables were compiled, which indicated the directions of the location of the Kaaba relative to various geographical points. Similar tables for specific geographical locations were compiled in relation to geographical and astronomical landmarks.

Zij

Special astronomical tables in Islam are called zij. With their help, you can find the geographical coordinates of a place and the azimuth (the angle between the north direction and the direction of any object) of the qibla.

Pocket compass

To use a compass, you need to know the approximate location of your place of residence and Mecca on a geographical map. Based on this knowledge, the compass will help determine the qibla. So, Moscow is located in the north relative to Mecca. For prayer in the western regions of Russia, you need to determine the south by the compass - the qibla is directed there.

Geographic map

You can determine the landmark for prayer using the map. You need to look at the location of the place of residence and determine its relationship to Mecca.

Moscow, Arkhangelsk and Rostov are in the north of Mecca. To pray in these cities, you need to look south. In Omsk, Irkutsk and Krasnoyarsk, you need to look to the southwest, because they are located in the northeast of Mecca.

Prayer in Moscow on Prospekt Mira

A compass or the position of the sun (stars) will help determine the north-south direction. To determine the cardinal directions by the sun, you need to go outside at noon and stand with your back to the luminary. The face will face south. This rule applies in the Northern Hemisphere. At night, in clear weather, the north can be determined by the North Star. It is located in the tail of the constellation Ursa Minor (the brightest star of the small bucket). From the star you need to draw a vertical line to the horizon. This will be the direction to the north.

Mechanical watches

In sunny weather, knowing your location on a geographical map, you can use the clock. They will help determine the cardinal points. To do this, they are carefully placed on a horizontal surface with an hour hand in the sun. The bisector (a ray from the top of the angle dividing the angle into two equal parts) of the angle between the hand and the twelve o'clock mark will indicate the direction to the south. When determining the south before twelve o'clock in the afternoon, the south will be located on the right side of the sun, after twelve o'clock - on the left side of the sun.

Internet applications

Electronic cards, computer programs and applications - the simplest and most modern way. Programs using satellite navigation will easily determine the location and indicate the direction of the qibla.

Qibla Finder Online Application

Location of mosques

Being next to the mosque, there will be no problem in which direction to pray. During the construction of mosques, a special niche, the mihrab, is equipped in the wall closest to Mecca. The imam enters this niche when performing collective rites. The mihrab is oriented in such a way that it indicates the direction towards the main Muslim shrine. To pray, Muslims face the mihrab.

In situations where the orientation of the location of the mosque was erroneous, carpets are arranged in a certain way to determine the direction in the room. Arab countries are characterized by signs that arrows indicate the direction of the location of Mecca.

Is it a sin to pray in the other direction

In the absence of reliable landmarks, when it is impossible to establish the qibla on your own, you can ask another Muslim about the direction. Such actions will be accepted normally. Wrong orientation during prayer due to the error of the “prompter” will not be considered a sin for the person asking.

In emergency situations and cases where there is a threat to life, the praying person can arbitrarily choose the direction for prayer. A mistake under such conditions would not be considered a sin.

For every Muslim, the definition of the qibla (direction towards the sacred Kaaba) is important, since it is in the direction of the qibla that the daily prayer should be performed according to the precepts of Allah, which were sent down in the Koran. There are various ways to determine the Qibla, in the same article I will tell you how to use the online qibla compass, and what network services will help us with this.

Why determining the qibla is important

According to the precepts of Allah, every Muslim during his prayer must direct his face towards Mecca. Mosques and other religious buildings should also be oriented towards the Holy Kaaba. Every Muslim must do everything in his power to correctly determine the qibla in order to perform prayer correctly.

The Holy Quran says: “We have seen how you turn your face to the sky, and We will turn you to a qibla with which you will be satisfied. Turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque. Wherever you are, turn your faces in her direction. Indeed, those who have been given the Scripture know that this is the truth from their Lord. Allah is not ignorant of what they do.” (Quran, 2 sura, 144 verses).
