Why do flowers need flowers? Why do we need flowers. Houseplant Peperomia: Health Benefits

Most people consider themselves to be amateur flower growers and cannot imagine their home without indoor plants. But there are those who frankly do not understand why flowers are needed in the house. But they serve not only as an interior decoration, but also bring undeniable benefits. The main thing is to choose the right ones and properly care for them.

Fresh air

Among the plants that fill the room with oxygen, there are species that are able to purify the air from harmful contaminants. Some of them destroy about 90% of house dust, which makes life easier for people prone to allergies. Others can become an alternative to an expensive humidifier, they are able to neutralize the effects of formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and other fumes harmful to health.

positive attitude

juicy greens and bright flowers able to brighten up even the grayest day. For those who are prone to apathy, depression, loss of strength and blues, psychologists recommend getting indoor flowers, caring for them and admiring the beauty of plants. This will be an excellent source of energy, give a charge of vivacity and strength for new achievements. Especially the presence of flowers in the house is useful for creative individuals who experience a crisis from time to time.

Scientists have proven that if you stare at bright leaves or flowers for several minutes, the level of adrenaline in the blood will increase, and more oxygen will enter the brain.

natural "medicine"

Many houseplants have medicinal properties. For example, the well-known aloe is indispensable in the treatment of skin diseases, healing of wounds and burns. Lotus prevents the development of cataracts and glaucoma, and also helps to calm the eyes after prolonged work in front of a computer monitor.

When deciding to acquire indoor flowers, it is worth studying their features: care conditions, preferences, and most importantly, the benefits that the selected plants will bring. Some will become original decoration living room, others - will fill the bedroom with a feeling of lightness, others - will be an excellent "filter" for the air in the kitchen. Do not deprive attention of the place near the computer: a variety of cacti will not only reduce its harmful effects, but also “enliven” the work area.

Very few plants do without flowers, but on most plants flowers are sure to appear, because it is in the flower that the seeds are formed, from which new plants will grow the next year. We love the flower for its fragrance and for its beautiful, bright corolla.

But for a plant, the most important thing in a flower is its stamens and pistil. Every flower has them, even the smallest and inconspicuous. Pollen must land on the pistil of a flower of another similar plant. Then there will be offspring.

But how to arrange it? And then the plants start up on different tricks. Some plants rely on the will of the wind. This is already familiar to us timothy, birch, willow. Their flowers are usually small and not particularly beautiful. The wind doesn't care what it blows. But they give a lot of pollen. Let at least one speck of dust fall on the flower of another plant!

Many flowers are pollinated by insects. And the insect will not pollinate for nothing. He needs to be lured into something. And there is no end to the flower tricks. The first trick is nectar, sweet juice. It accumulates in a cup of a flower, at the very bottom. The second trick is a bright whisk, visible from afar. That's why flowers are so beautiful.

The third trick is flavor. Insects have a wonderful sense of smell, they smell "their" flower for a whole kilometer! The bee, having drunk the nectar, crawls out of the flower covered in pollen. Now she will fly for nectar to another flower and bring pollen to its pistil!

Some flowers smell unpleasant, these flowers are pollinated by flies and beetles. There are also flowers that are pollinated by small birds, hummingbirds. Their nectar is collected in a deep tube, where the hummingbird sticks its long, curved beak.

It is even difficult to imagine how inexpressive and boring life would be without flowers. This is a celebration of beauty and solemnity, bright colors in gray everyday life. We greet the bride with flowers, send the child to school and see off loved ones on their last journey. An ordinary bouquet can express feelings without words and show an attitude towards a person, bring a smile to his face and bring him back to life. They decorate our lives, demonstrating the beauty of the surrounding nature with their perfection. Therefore, we meet them everywhere: on the windowsills, garden beds, in the forest. But the bouquets created by specialists are of particular value because they are selected with meaning and in full accordance with harmony.

Arctic voyages on nuclear-powered icebreakers last four to six months. But the crew consists mainly of non-Murmansk residents, therefore, even in the parking lots, which are also long, the sailors live on the ship. So they spend most of their time outside their home.
Since the cabins are designed mainly for one person, everyone equips their home in their own way. Photographs, pictures, drawings... Somebody starts an aquarium, some even a cage with a parrot. Cats and dogs, however, are strictly prohibited. And in every cabin - flowers. You look, it seems that a person is completely devoid of sentimentality, tenderness, and grows flowers - you will be amazed. I'm not talking about women, but men!
Of course, there is no particular diversity in the ship flora.
Tradescantia, ivy, some ferns, cacti, even geraniums. And, of course, violets. Violets of the most diverse different colors and forms.
I have little experience with this. Somehow, when the ivy, stretching along the threads near the ceiling, reached the opposite wall of the cabin, I, having gone to the medical block in the morning, left the porthole open. I returned for dinner, it was hellishly cold in the cabin, all the flowers, not only withered, turned black.
It turns out that during this time the icebreaker changed course, my side, located in the morning on the leeward side and warmed to some extent by the summer polar sun, moved towards the wind. A frosty wind instantly chilled the small cabin.
So, about flowers. Reflecting not only on physiological, but also psychological characteristics seafarers on an Arctic voyage, the question of such a universal love for flowers constantly arose in me. Gradually I got to know almost all the sailors, met with each of them on more than one voyage, got to know the characters, mood, knew about families, about children, about the problems that some of them had on the shore. And unconsciously compared all this information with flowers.
Well, naturally, what first comes to mind is that flowers remind you of home, caring for them is accompanied by a shift in attention, and takes not always the right free time. In general, they act soothingly, relaxing.
But later I came up with another hypothesis, which I consider my own, since I have not come across such thoughts anywhere in the literature. This observation helped me.
In our institute, the department Latin Natan Maksimovich Lempel was in charge. Even we, first-year students, distinguished him from other teachers. He was short, hypersthenic, with one leg in a huge orthopedic boot. This boot always creaked when Lempel walked down the corridor.
He was very intelligent. We, the students, also felt it when we handed over tests to him or simply listened when he entered the study room. He liked to ask us for some Latin saying, hanging in abundance on the walls of the pulpit and even outside it. And how, at the same time, he did not hide his satisfaction, if he heard a clear and correct answer!
Of course, we also felt a special feeling for him because we studied from his textbook. Moreover, it was a real textbook, published not in a local printing house, like many manuals in other departments, but in the Moscow publishing house "Medicine".
We saw that practically all teachers treat him with special respect, not to mention the cathedral ones, who, it seems, all adored him. And at the same time, it was impossible not to notice his loneliness. He was engaged, as they said then, in public work - he was the editor-in-chief of the institute newspaper Ad Astra - To the Stars. And the paper was very interesting. The door to his little office was almost always open. Sometimes we saw someone on a small sofa opposite desk. They were talking. More often, for some reason, the head of the department of physical education came to see him.
But still, most often Natan Maksimovich was alone, and if he did not read or write, then we saw him bent over a window sill or a table densely lined with pots of cacti. What only cacti were not there!
He rearranged them, loosened the earth, watered. And at the same time, it seemed to us that he was talking to them. Now I'm sure it was. He did not have enough interlocutors, he was not satisfied with the amount of communication with people that was possible, and which, most likely, he did not try to expand.
He was just over fifty. Later I learned that in Kazakhstan, and before that in Frunze, the Kyrgyz capital, Lempel was not of his own free will. He was born in the west of Ukraine. He received a traditional Jewish upbringing. In his student years, he participated in some circle where they studied the Jewish religion and culture, was arrested, received five years in the camps, and then exiled to Central Asia.
At parting with him, the coffin was exhibited in the lobby, in which the selection committee usually worked, where I also handed over documents at one time, there were many people. And classical music played softly all the time.
After a couple of months of the flight, I began to catch myself trying to be alone more often. Of course, at work, and we worked, of course, seven days a week, you can’t sit alone - patients, your own colleagues, then you need to go to the catering unit, then check the sanitary condition with the first mate. And yes, the day goes by so fast.
Arriving at the cabin, physically, in general, not tired, I want to lie down. And so as not to hear a sharp phone call and not hear: “Doctor, is the coffee ready?”.
I have a normal working day, from eight to seventeen. And fellow navigators are on watch: four through eight. And they considered it necessary to relieve stress after the watch with a cup of coffee, just to chat. And I am grateful to them for that. They were also thinking about me. But there was such a state - to retire, to hide even from friends. This is a pathology. And it wasn't just me.
But our body is nicely arranged. If he is healthy, that is, if not only the body is healthy, but also the psyche, something forces you not to enter into yourself, not to close, but to look for some other environment that makes you live. For some it is fish, for others it is embroidery or knitting, including for men. For some, it's flowers. Like many of my colleagues - sailors, like Natan Maksimovich Lempel. Flowers are silent, but always ready to listen to you attentively...
Once I was asked to fly to the Far Eastern icebreaker that was working with us in the eastern sector. I think it was Ermak. Then they came here from Vladivostok, paired with the same diesel icebreaker "Admiral Makarov".
Actually, the eastern sector is not our zone, Far Eastern icebreakers provide pilotage here. But that winter, the ice conditions were extremely difficult. Dry cargo caravans froze and stood motionless for many days, diesel icebreakers could not do anything. The northern delivery was broken. Already covered with ice, just crushed a small cargo ship "Nina Sagaydak".
Therefore, our nuclear-powered ship was sent to the east to help.
I remember, on the way to the place of this ice captivity, I was on the captain's bridge, when at the appointed hour the weather, the situation, and immediate plans were announced to the crew on the ship's radio.
- We are approaching the caravan of ships of the Far Eastern Shipping Company to rescue them from ice captivity. According to ice reconnaissance, all ships are sealed in ice, only one of our icebreakers “like a gray neck” retains mobility in a small opening, - the watch officer cheerfully announced.
I cannot vouch for the accuracy and terminological correctness of these words. I remember only this - "like a gray neck."
So, the captain of one of these icebreakers complained in radio conversations to our captain that he was not feeling well. And I was sent there.
Yuri Petrovich, that was Captain F.'s name, I think, was in his cabin. These diesel-powered icebreakers were built in Finland and were luxuriously finished inside. Our captain's cabin was inferior both in size and interior.
But nothing pleased my patient. He was closed, there was no desire to talk about topics that did not directly relate to his well-being. He did not support the conversation about the current Arctic situation, although this topic, as it seemed to me, should have helped him talk.
But he also did not name any specific complaints about his condition. bad dream, lack of appetite. Tablets don't help. His ship's doctor can not understand and help.
He measured the pressure, felt the pulse, listened to everything, rattled. Of course, I did not find anything somatic. I tried to convince him that nothing threatened him, his heart was working normally, the rest of the organs and systems, too. But the captain remained just as mournful.
We talked to the doctor. They agreed that it was mental depression. The captain needs a rest. At that time, it was already expected that in a week or two they would go to Vladivostok.
Of course, all sorts of hobbies, if any, contribute to psycho-emotional discharge. In healthy cases, they are sure to be found.
We had an engineer of the service of the Republic of Belarus, who collected stamped envelopes, postcards. I must say that on every ship, including us, there were both official and unofficial stamps. Envelopes with them can be of great value to collectors. For example, in connection with the world's first icebreaking achievement of the North Pole, a special stamp was made on the Arktika, which was used only that day, after which it was lowered to the bottom of the ocean.
Then I learned that this engineer put his hobby on a grand scale, selling such envelopes and postcards purchased on other ships in St. Petersburg for serious money.
Someone was engaged in almost serial tailoring of bags from ship's tarpaulin. At the same time, the bags came out in a variety of shapes and sizes, very durable, comfortable. After the flight, our crew members could be distinguished in the city by such bags.
Photography, woodcarving, bones, sports, in the end, there are opportunities to do that on the icebreaker.
Edik Garder is a young electrician, my countryman in Kazakhstan has mastered the profession of a glass blower. In a muffle furnace, he melted glass fragments of different colors, resulting in almost Czech or even Venetian glass, from which he tried to build an intricate lamp. I didn't see the result.
I was also surprised by one respectable head of the service, candidate of sciences. I had to go directly from the flight to Leningrad to defend the medical category. He asked to bring a package to his family home and showed the contents. There was a rather nice fur coat, I don’t remember what fur. Anatoly Alexandrovich said that he made it himself on the flight, for his teenage daughter.
