Hinges for cabinet doors: types and mounting options

The service life of any piece of furniture will depend on how good the fittings are installed on the furniture. The most important element of furniture fittings are hinges - special devices that help attach the facade to the body and ensure that the doors open at the right angle. Types of hinges for cabinet doors are diverse. Let's talk about the two most popular varieties - four-hinged canopies and special canopies for glass doors.

Four-hinged fittings

Four-hinged fittings (photo) are considered a universal option. The key advantage of this type of canopies is that it is able to withstand the heaviest loads, has excellent wear resistance.

Hinges of this type allow you to mount cabinet doors at an opening angle of 90 to 165 degrees, if necessary, the fasteners can be adjusted in three planes.

Four-hinged fastener device

Such a loop consists of two elements:

  1. Mounting plate, which will be mounted on the side wall of the furniture cabinet;
  2. Loop fixed on the facade itself.

In the furniture industry, several types of four-hinged fittings are used - overhead canopies, semi-overlay hinges, internal hinges, corner fasteners (photo).

Fasteners for glass doors

Two types of furniture hinges are used to fasten glass cabinet doors: the aforementioned four-hinged fasteners and hinged canopies. Basically, craftsmen prefer the first type, because it not only provides reliable fixation of the facades to the body and allows you to open the doors at a convenient angle, but also looks attractive and aesthetically pleasing.

The installation of hinges on the doors of a four-hinged type cabinet is also convenient in that it allows, if necessary, to adjust the already installed facades. The advantage is that almost all types of fasteners are produced with a leading device. Hinges with a closer for cabinet doors allow you to ensure the tightest possible closing of the facades.

The four-hinged fittings have only one drawback - at home it will be extremely difficult for the master to cope with drilling holes in the glass sheet. Also, fasteners for glass have a more complex device than cup canopies for wooden cases.

Hinge fasteners for glass furniture facades

Hinged fittings for glass facades are rarely used by furniture manufacturers, but they can still be used when it is not possible to install cup canopies. Articulated canopies are distinguished by their simplicity of design (there are only two elements in it) and ease of installation.

But you need to know that if the glass sashes have a solid weight, the hinge hinges may not be able to cope with the load and quickly fail.

Installation instructions for furniture canopies

How to install a hinge on a cabinet door with your own hands? The following instructions will help you in these works:

  1. The initial stage of work on the installation of the hinge mechanism is the marking. You need to mark both the place of attachment and the place of landing on the facade and on the body. Please note that furniture fittings are not recommended to be installed too close to the edge of the doors. The recommended distance is fifteen to twenty centimeters. But the depth of planting the canopy should not be too significant, because the facade made of chipboard usually has a slight thickness. By planting the hinge too deep, you risk damaging the furniture. If the size of the facade requires the installation of several hinges, repeat the above steps as many times as necessary.
  2. Next, you will need to drill the grooves. When drilling, make sure that the setting of the drill is strictly perpendicular to the surface of the case, otherwise you will damage the cabinet. Tip: pay attention to sharpening the tool before performing work, the use of a non-sharp drill can lead to the formation of cracks and chips on the surface of the facade;
  3. Insert the fittings into the landing site and fix its holders with self-tapping screws;
  4. The next step is to mount the canopy mount on the cabinet body. Mark out and, according to it, install the mounting plate and fix it.

After completing the above work, proceed to hanging the doors. Attach the facade and fix first the top canopies, then the bottom hinges and then the fasteners located in the center. You just have to adjust the fittings so that the facade fits as tightly as possible to the body. For this purpose, you need to tighten the adjusting screw in the loop. It is not necessary to screw the element strongly, otherwise the facades will close with a strong and loud pop.
