In soft stones, such as malachite or lapis lazuli, a round opening can be made with a metal drill good quality. For drilling use a special jewelry drill. A hole is made in a stone placed in water. You can simply moisten the material and tool constantly to prevent overheating.

If a perfectly even hole is required, then when it becomes noticeable that the drill is approaching the exit, the stone is turned over and drilled from the back.

In practice, the first drilling of a hole is not always successful. But with experience, with the right approach, it is possible to create an even through opening of four millimeters in stone in less than an hour. Almost every day is drilling holes in stone. And it does not cause any particular difficulties when using special equipment. But what to do if you do not have experience and knowledge, but drilling a hole is necessary.
I myself remember the first time I went to a hardware store and asked for help from a sales assistant. I needed to drill 2 small holes in a granite slab. The salesperson advised me on drills with a Pobedite tip, assuring me that they fit perfectly.

Make a markup. Draw a line on the stone. Often, the pencil leaves practically no traces on polishing, so you can use masking paper tape and make the necessary marks on it.

First, start drilling the stone at a considerable angle to drill a small groove, then gradually level the bit until it is vertical, while continuing to lightly press on it. Do not press hard on the crown while drilling holes. Diamond coated crowns are very sensitive to pressure and heat. Raise it periodically so that it is moistened with water and cooled.

Drilling technology

The processing of solid materials is associated with the use of a certain technology. Drilling stones has its own specifics. For example, granite is a very hard and at the same time very brittle stone. When choosing the rotational speed of the tool, you must proceed from the diameter of the hole being drilled. The larger the diameter of the hole, the lower the required speed.

To get the hole in the right place, you need to make a small groove by tilting the rotating drill to the side.

During drilling, water supply must be mandatory. Water, firstly, protects the cutting edges of the diamond drill from overheating, and, secondly, flushes out the sludge. Before drilling, in order to get the hole in the right place, it is necessary to tilt the rotating drill to make a small groove. After that, the drill is leveled, and even drilling begins in this place. This is necessary so that at the very beginning the drill does not move out of the given point.

The drill must be well centered to avoid damage to the hole edges. The object to be drilled must be on a flat surface and well fixed. Unlike concrete, it is undesirable to drill granite in perforation mode. It is very brittle and can shatter under impact.

When drilling granite, you should proceed from the following parameters of the hole diameter and the speed of rotation of the drill. With a hole diameter of 6 mm, the rotation speed should be 2000 rpm. With a hole - 12 mm, rotation speed - 950 rpm. If the hole is 24mm, the rotation speed should not exceed -700 rpm. Such data are obtained empirically and are the most optimal.

In some cases, granite needs to be reinforced. Such a need arises when a countertop is made from a relatively thin sheet of granite. A large load on the table surface can break it. To increase the strength of the granite slab, it is reinforced with a steel bar.
